catshit_dogfart , in PLEAAASSEE PLEASE COME BACK TO THE OFFICE PLS

I swear, when I’m called into the office I get fuck all nothing done. Like once in a while there’s a reason for me to be on site, and I do that thing and nothing else all day.

Distractions, interruptions, noise, general discomfort. Seems every time I actually start making progress on something, a person stops by my desk and that basically erases whatever I did. So it always ends with “I’ll do it tomorrow when I’m at home”.

pirate526 ,
@pirate526@kbin.social avatar

I must be in like some weird alternate reality because my boss recognises that the office is a distraction, and doesn’t go there often himself. We go there very seldomly, primarily to catch up with colleagues, but not to work on our tasks.

I get maybe 15-20% of my normal work done at the office.

Granted this might increase over time if I came in regularly but it’d never touch how productive I am at home. This rhetoric about losing productivity working from home is dangerous and bullshit.

catshit_dogfart ,

And you know, working from home I’m comfortable doing things otherwise I wouldn’t agree to doing - particularly coming online late hours.

They’re doing maintenance at 7pm, that’s no big deal, I’ll adjust my hours around and make it work. Not like I’m driving or just staying late, okay I’m not doing a 12 hour day at the office. And realistically 4pm-7pm would basically just be waiting. Guess I would if I really had to, but I wouldn’t be too happy about it. Heck just last week I checked to see if something applied correctly at 12am. No big deal, just log in and make sure.

And I fully recognize this could be exploited, become the norm. I’m careful to set boundaries, but I guess working from home has loosened my boundaries of what is and isn’t okay. Used to be I wouldn’t even answer my work phone after 5pm, but now it’s not so bad. Little annoying sometimes, but I’m okay with it.

CoffeeBot ,

That’s me too. Sure it’s useful once a week to sit down with my team but the rest of our work is solo or on an ad hoc debugging call where sharing screens actually makes things easier.

Even worse my office doesn’t even have enough desks for everyone, and even fewer of them are properly setup with a monitor from this decade. Each of I ur 3 mandatory office days is a complete crapshoot on whether you’ll actually get a proper workstation or will you be stuck at a table with your laptop all day.

They’re write offs where fuck all gets done. Some of my colleagues who are in meetings all day seem to be okay with the office but if you actually need to do work there’s little point in being there.

thebestaquaman ,

I recognise that I’m probably a minority here, but I have a much harder time staying focused at home. At my office I share a room with a couple others, on a floor with a couple dozen more. Pretty much everything I do (outside 1-3 meetings a week) is individual work.

For me, something about physically “going to work” helps me “switch on” much more. Taking breaks with other people, rather than alone, also helps me structure the breaks, and it’s not uncommon that we get good ideas or resolve something that’s been bugging someone during a break. Lastly, I really appreciate the option of “just dropping by” when I want to ask someone about something, and the fact that they can do the same to me. In my experience it’s never gotten to the point that it happens more than maybe once or twice a day, so it’s not really that disturbing either.

pelotron ,
@pelotron@midwest.social avatar

Same for me. I found having my workspace be outside my home is better for both my productivity and mood. But I will fight for whatever method of work people find works for them individually.

Weirdfish ,

The trick for me is having a dedicated home office. I wake up, shower, dress in work clothes, and “go to the office”.

Only things in there are my work desk, and some excercise equipment.

The company is currently hybrid, with a couple days required in office every week. From everything I’ve heard, productivity is up, and there is no talk from management that we’re changing things.

killa44 ,

Try adding some plants too. Having the occasional distraction of watering or picking dead leaves available is useful, without being excessively distracting.

Also, I guess people like oxygen and decorations, it whatever.

Mosherr ,

That is great and you should have that option. Some of us work best from home and want that option. The idea that we all work the same is the problem, flexible is the solution. The ability to allow people to work in whatever way they think is best and trust them to get stuff done would solve this issue. Except it isn’t about that it is about office real estate and management thinking the only way people are working is if they are watched.

thebestaquaman ,

I absolutely agree that flexibility is the way to go. I also have to admit that a large part of what makes me function better in the office is that my coworkers are there as well. As such, I think a compromise that everyone can be as happy as possible with is the best thing.

Remember: Some people would prefer to work from home everyday, and function best when the do. People like me would prefer that as many as possible people are in the office as often as possible, and function best when that is the case. The optimum (both regarding satisfaction and productivity) is clearly somewhere in-between.

That means flexibility is very important, but “full flexibility”, i.e. everyone always working from where they would prefer, is probably not the global optimum.

fuzzzerd ,

I don’t want to put words in your mouth, but I think you’re saying, essentially “I work better in the office with others, so others should be here to make me work better” and I would submit that a better solution is for you to find a company that hires like minded folks so you can all work together in an office.

thebestaquaman ,

I can see why you would say that, but my point is that in any reasonably large group of people there’s going to be diversity regarding how often people prefer to be at the office (if ever). It’s also well documented that things like training and meetings are much less efficient if people are remote. Together, I think this means that the solution to having as efficient and satisfied employees as possible is to do some coordinating, such that everyone has their needs met.

I don’t think it’s realistic to have some companies consisting only of people that prefer to work from home every day, and others where everyone wants to be in the office every day. Flexibility and coordination is key.

Dax87 ,
@Dax87@forum.stellarcastle.net avatar

Im the exact opposite. At home there are way too many distractions and temptations than in an office environment.

new_acct_who_dis ,

I’m like this too, but also social. I screw around with my coworkers so much in the office. I have to be home for my own good!

c0mbatbag3l ,
@c0mbatbag3l@lemmy.world avatar

Dude, same. I’ve never been more productive than working from home specifically because people have to engage with me via teams or email instead of barging into the office and disrupting my work flow.

Shit… Did I commit that router config before Becky needed my help fixing her user error? Oh no, I did but I forgot to change the DNS on the DHCP pool so now I can’t hit the domain for remote authentication because they’re still using public DNS.

Fuck! I’ll just do it tomorrow when I have my coffee in hand and my cat buzzing happily, with lo Fi beats to overhaul WAN circuits to blaring.

steebo_jack ,

Im the same way, i just catchup with the coworkers and we spend most of the day chatting about various things and then a long lunch and at least two hours of meetings is basically my days in the office...at home no distractions, get shit done in the morning, make lunch, deal with any issues in the afternoon...can at least take a shit without smelling other peoples shit...

TV series: You have to skip the first season, it’s a slow start and kinda shit. Go back to it later, except for S01E07 and 08, those are necessary to understand the story arc.
In S02, watch E03,04,05,08,11 and 02 in that order. Still drags on but there are some memorable moments. S03 is great. Except for the ending, skip that. And it all goes downhill starting in S04.
But if you stick with it, S07 is bearable again.

Best series of all time!

I personally recommend watching all of GoT in order, not because it’s good, but because you won’t appreciate the flawless genius of S8E3 without the other 7 seasons of context. It’s a slow drag through those 7 seasons, but once it picks up in the last 5 episodes, it’ll all be worth it, I swear. There’s so much character development packed into those episodes that they’ll seem like completely different people!

My friend insists Battlestar Galactica has a crazy order. His partner wants to watch it and he got irrationally angry (at the show, not at her).

I guess she watches it without him now. He refuses to even discuss it. I like to poke at him about it occasionally.

ArmoredThirteen ,

What do they think the order of Battlestar is? I just watched through it again and it’s fine as is I don’t know how changing the order could help

TexasDrunk ,

I have no clue. I’ve never watched it but if I did I’d probably just go in whatever order it was put out.

You’d have to know him, though. He gets animated (not angry, just extra) about a lot of little things but big things just roll off his back. I haven’t seen him this angry about anything since we were teenagers a hundred years ago. It’s hilarious because of who he is.

I think one of our old coworkers convinced him of that back when it was on and he was considering getting into it and he’s never let it go.

dev_null ,

Yeah. Both can be watched separately, but if you want to watch both, it’s nice to do it in chronological order where episodes of the two series are mixed together, as you get some references to the events in the other series.

ArmoredThirteen ,

Not this extreme, but Always Sunny I couldn’t get past the second episode. Gave up on it until someone told me that I can just completely ignore the first season and start on season two. Actually got into the show like that, never gone back to try and watch the parts I missed

@SexualPolytope@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Honestly, if I’m told that I need to watch something in a weird order in order to enjoy it, I just drop it from my watchlist. There’s plenty of good media to watch, I’m not gonna do that stupid shit.

Sonicdemon86 ,

You’re not gonna like Fate then. It is a good series just complicated time-line and a complete mess.

Kedly ,

I mean, you can just watch said series in release order as well if optimal order is too much work

(but I do get the sentiment. I’m just thinking of Steins Gate. Watching it and then Steins Gate 0 is a perfectly valid watch order, but since Steins Gate 0 expands on a certain event that just happens in 1 episode in the original into an entire season [and adds a whole bunch of narrative weight by doing so] theres an optimal watch order that has you jump to Steins Gate 0 slightly before ending Steins Gate original and then finishing Steins Gate original after you’ve finished Steins Gate 0)

Theharpyeagle ,

Yeah, I can get into a series if people say to skip the first couple episodes/seasons because it takes a little to figure itself out (like how you can skip the first season of Parks and Rec and miss nothing of importance), but weird watch order is not something I’ll bother with.

Also, Hitler had to declare a state if emergency to gain the absolute power the Supreme Court has just handed to the US president.

Suffice it to say, something lile this is impossible now in Germany. The justices of our highest court, the Bindesverfassungsgericht, can only hold the job for 12 years and can be no older than 68. They are also always equally voted in by two different branches of the government and need a two thirds majority for any decision.

ZILtoid1991 ,

They’re concealing their true nature, and get a bunch of naïve moderates to clean their image. Jobbik did it in Hungary first, it even lead to the radicals splitting out the party under Mi Hazánk Mozgalom (Our Homeland Movement - technically a satellite party and the “bad cops” of Fidesz), and the moderates rebranding as more boring conservatives. Fidesz learned this tactic, and used it to make Trianon Revisionism seem like a “common cause”. Gamergate also did it the first round, the second round was just a literal reaction against any kind of inclusivity. The republicans are also doing it of course: Their average voter isn’t as evil as it seems, they’re just the naïve loyal voters, who think even if things go bad, they can just be removed from legislation. Which is true, but it will be hard if democracy is dismantled like in Hungary, and even then you can’t unlegislate ruined lives, the dead from their graves, the lost years people had to endure because of bad laws and no worker’s protections.

CitizenKong ,

Because the Verfassungsschutz sucks, but that’s not the fault of the Bundesverfassungsgericht.

And they repeatedly declared laws of the government unconstitutional, not matter which parties were in the coalition at the moment.

ZILtoid1991 ,

I think Trump will declare a state of emergency as soon as people will riot against his unjust laws. Project 2025 has something about deploying the military against the population to force through deeply unpopular laws.

A few years ago I started getting random texts in the middle of the night from some guy who thought I was a girl he’d met at a bar. I guess the guy was kind of a pest so she gave him a made up number that just happened to be my number. I tried politely explaining that I was:

a. not a girl

b. definitely not anyone he knows

and

c. trying to sleep because it’s 2am

He seemed to think this was some sort of courtship game and kept messaging me until I finally just told him to fuck off

This scenario kept repeating itself every few weeks apparently whenever he would get drunk and/or horny in the middle of the night

It kept going until one night I finally told him I would meet him somewhere and just went back to sleep

I never heard from him again after that… Maybe he’s still waiting there? 😂

Evil_Shrubbery ,

I mean, in previous years we did pass some environmental laws (like banning internal combustion cars), not as much or as strict as I hoped, but change was there. Sure hope that doesn’t all get undone ‘to boost the economy’ (in the USA sense - so help the existing big corps to boost their profits & do nothing for the majority).

Hell, I rally like the vast majority of EU regulations (various directives and delegated acts) that were passed & are being constantly updated (to keep up with the times/trends & tech) over the last 20 years, I think its a rally good balance between protecting the people whilst at the same time working with the market to actually achieve a meaningful & painless change over several years. That’s why we have representatives. The added “bureaucracy” as companies call it is just extra reporting & testing (to confirm compliance with standards). This benefits us all & is of unbelievably marginal cost when you look at the economy, regardless of what lobbyists say.

ConfusedPossum , in It's amazing so many people are able to use English as a second language.

No amount of exceptions and quirks will prevent you from learning any language as long as you have lots and lots of exposure. After your reach a certain base level you just keep improving as you use the language, and even the exceptions start to feel natural.

English is the only language other than my mother tongue I have achieved this level with. I'd like to think at least in writing it's indistinguishable from a native speaker. Theoretically tho German should be easier for me as I'm Dutch. But my German never reached the same level because of the difference in exposure

trashgirlfriend ,

My native language is a Slavic one but I can’t fucking learn Polish because the language is just too fucking funny to me.

rockerface ,

As a Ukrainian, I can almost understand written Polish and Belarusian despite not speaking either. Spoken Polish tho… good luck

trashgirlfriend ,

The one reason that Polish is so funny to me is the amount of homophones between it and my native language with vastly different meanings.

One of the funniest being:

Szukać - To look for (Polish)

Šukať - To fuck (Slovak, improper/slang)

Both pronounced the same way.

rockerface ,

I assure you that Ukrainian is going to be just as funny to you, because we did loan like a third of our vocabulary from Polish. And another third is homophones, so you can have two layers of the broken phone game

It happened to my dad too. He got hurt and was basically sitting in front of the TV all day being brainwashed to hate “the left.”

afraid_of_zombies ,

My parents were always a bit right but they still could function. Could have a normal conversation or do an activity with them. 2010 thanksgiving was the last time I saw them and fox killed whatever was left in them.

I knew a guy who was a philosophy major and his friend group was a bunch of atheist skeptics, so he knew all about logical fallacies and so on. He took a hard right turn into Pizzagate territory once Trump took office and now believes everything short of Flat Earth. (And maybe that, too. We haven’t talked in a loooooong time.)

The only way it makes sense to me is to think that if you have no moral compass, you’ll go whichever way the wind blows. Humans like to think that we’re rational, logical beings (even if nobody else is), but the truth is that we’re all driven by emotion. Strong values, such as a love of truth and hatred of bigotry, are what keep people from descending into this nonsense, not mere logic.

Also if Purina didn’t test on animals there would be a lot of dead dogs

21Cabbage ,

I mean, I’m pretty sure we’ve got enough research down at this point to make non-lethal dog food without testing to make sure, probably still a good idea to make sure Rex still wants a bowl before slapping it on the shelf, but I think we’re past the point of trying to market the Purina One Arsenic, Chocolate, and Grapes brand of kibble.

Kidplayer_666 ,

Stuff that is marketed towards animals, obviously makes sense to be tested in them, as well as medicine for humans

Tar_alcaran ,

“Animal testing” isn’t just “will this murder the dog”, it’s also “will these 50 random dogs actually eat the food?”

“Je voudrais un baguette” I once asked in a parisian boulangerie. I don’t think anyone has looked at me with the same level of disgust before as the older lady selling the breads.

I remember standing in line for crepes in Le Havre, I just had my first year of French in school and I was practicing how to order in my head, nervously repeating “un crepe avec sucre”, and killed myself over not remembering the gender of crepe. So it’s finally my turn in line and I order nervously (I am 13 years old) and they reply with “pancake with sugar, no problem” and I’m just like 😭

Somehow people not even giving you a chance to practice your language skills is awful

Deway ,

Damn French, une crêpe and a pancake are not the same thing!

“Jay parlay France-says tray bee-en! Jaytude France-says pour treys anss in laycole!”

I was in Quebec, and the locals kept trying to talk to me in French. I can technically understand French, but not at those speeds. I only had to say that phrase once to anyone, and they immediately switched to English and begged me to not speak French again. If you sound like Peggy Hill attempting to speak French, then you’ve nailed this phrase.

Québécois is a whole other can of worms.

Taniwha420 ,

Seriously. It’s pretty discouraging and off-putting. Although, when I was in the Aquitaine I don’t think I got any of that.

… Maybe it’s because they remember being under English management and don’t want to give anyone an excuse?

I do find the French have very little ability to understand their language if it’s getting mangled.

volvoxvsmarla ,

I think it’s just taking the easy, accommodating and safe route mostly.

A friend of mine taught himself German for years (he lives in Canada) and then, eager to put his knowledge into practice, went to Germany for three weeks. Whenever he attempted to speak German, people would reply in English - out of niceness.

He was so depressed and discouraged, he went home, vowed to never speak German again, taught himself Russian, went to Russia for a semester, people there were happy to speak Russian with him. He even met his future wife there, so it’s a happy end I guess.

I don’t remember if I ever heard him speak German (after all, he vowed and was still very hurt), but if his German was just half as good as his Russian, he should have had no problem with being understood.

James, in case you read this, St. Petersburg was freaking awesome and you freaking rock.

Baguettes are distinctly penis shaped, so the French are just wrong about that.

Not in itself but it is another data point for the theory. I suggest testing in controlled conditions many times despite it being a pain in the ass.

Rodeo ,

Ah the double entendre! Nicely done lol

azertyfun ,

Just wait to learn how we gender “dick” and “cunt” in French (hint: it’s not the way you’d think).

It’s the one thing people who aren’t fluent in a gendered language usually fail to grasp: Grammatical gender is in most situations completely separate from social gender. The grammatical gender in “une bite” has absolutely no social function and is not in any way contradictory to its traditionally opposite social gender.

Ironically it’s also why using the wrong grammatical gender feels so wrong/unnatural to a native speaker (not that it’s an excuse to be a dick to non-native speakers ofc): gender is not just “a social concept attached to a word”, it is an inherent property of the word that matters fundamentally to sentence structure and so misusing it throws everything off-balance. Francophones will much sooner accept someone close to them being trans than baguettes being male, and this is not a hyperbole.

casmael ,

Assigning gender to words is fucking stupid and adds unnecessary extra complexity to the language without any gaining any additional meaning. Personally I have no time for it.

My solution is replacing all les/la/l’ with a vaguely sounding “ll” sound.

I get the odd scathing look.
And occasionally someone will stop the conversation, and ask me to use the correct word, fully away of the shit I’m trying to pull.

You can never be sure on the Internet. Plus, I know there are people who think like this; my mom did something similar to my dad when I was a kid. When they were first dating she told him she didn’t want to be tied down, a sentiment that he thought was long over by the time they got married. Much to his surprise, she was angry that he wasn’t more accepting when he caught her cheating. Decades later, she still claims that she was entirely justified, and that my dad is an asshole for getting angry at her.

People need to communicate these things. If either myself or my partner wants to be with someone else, it is discussed. It allows everyone to make an informed decision going forward and no one is betrayed. Only time this ever happened with us, we were with the same person

Passerby6497 ,

I wish people who thought like this were just upfront about wanting non-monogamy rather than sneaking around and causing pain and strife for those around then.

Like, my wife (and partner) practice ethical non-monogamy and have fire years. If one of us wants to stay outside of our thruple, we talk about it and discuss how we feel, and then make a decision everyone is happy with. There are times where something is denied (last one was because of a bad partner she ended up breaking up with a month later, who went full ‘you can’t fire me I quit’ on her), but we all work through it.

Communicate is not that hard…

IPv4 is 43 years old, and there was the arpanet before that. They probably meant Usenet with the term “online”. The first E-Mail was sent in 1971.

But tbh, I am quite impressed how early the YMCA adopted.
