Why is there a preference for sons? Is it because they would traditionally get better jobs and take care of their parents or…?

Really good John Oliver about libraries recently. Informative but has some good recommendations on what kinds of actions to take: youtu.be/42xZB80sZaI?feature=shared

Oh good

Despite their joy, in seeing Diesel alive and apparently thriving as a want-to-be elk, they have no plans to try to capture him. “He’s out there doing what he’s raised to do,” Drewry told the television network.

That’s a part of anxiety/fear manufacturing.

And your people away from soldierhood.

I’ve never dove in my life, literally can’t swim, but this was my first thought. Let wild life be. Respect it enough to not make it about you.

What does “selecting the right wallet” for automating trains mean?

moistclump ,

What’s a wallet sponsorship?

I’m not on social media except Lemmy but… I thought Facebook was the “my relatives” one and Twitter was more keeping up with politicians, celebrities, and other public figures?

moistclump ,

But that’s like a stamp collector being mad at email. Wait, are stamp collectors mad at email??

moistclump ,

I think they’re saying before the Covid anti vaccine crowd.

As long as it wasn’t on tax paper dime for travel expenses I’m ok with that level of petty.

I read messages as massages and had a whole sit and think about what homophonic massages are.

moistclump ,

Homophobic. Dammit.

I love how much we don’t know. It’s wonderful. It’s exciting. Frontiers all over the place.

I’ve already been living my life on these tenets.

100 years ago, US citizenship for Native Americans came without voting rights in swing states (apnews.com)

It’s been a century now since an act of Congress granted citizenship to Native Americans, but advocates say that right bestowed in 1924 still hasn’t translated into equal access to the ballot. Inequities are especially pronounced in remote regions across the U.S., and some key Southwestern states with large Native American...

Not a democracy until everyone who who should get a vote gets a vote, including incarcerated, native Americans, and American territories.

You know, I read it now and I have no clue.

Oh wow that is a very unflattering photo of her. Just googled her and none of the other photos look like this. She’s only 52!

What is it about the text messages and emails sent by older people that make me feel like I'm having a stroke?

Maybe they're used to various shortcuts in their writing that they picked up before autocorrect became common, but these habits are too idiosyncratic for autocorrect to handle properly. However, that doesn't explain the emails I've had to decipher that were typed on desktop keyboards. Has anyone else younger than 45 or so felt similarly frustrated with geriatrics' messages?

@asklemmy

moistclump ,

I blame msn messenger for my speedy typing.

What a stark difference. Looks like the only place in the world it’s got a cold pocket like that amidst hot.

The Washington Post said it had the Alito flag story 3 years ago and chose not to publish (apnews.com)

Nine days after The New York Times reported about the political symbolism of an upside-down American flag that flew at U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito’s home, the Washington Post acknowledged it had the same story more than three years ago and decided not to publish it....

moistclump ,

That didn’t happen. And if it did, it wasn’t that bad. And if it was, that’s not a big deal. And if it is, that’s not my fault. And if it was, I didn’t mean it. And if I did, you deserved it.

Please forgive my ignorant Canadian self… Does America still elect coroners? Why are they elected positions? Are people… like… campaigning as wanna be local coroners?

Isn’t that like electing a city accountant or local doctor?

As Bo said, “Twenty thousand years of this, seven more to go.”

Oh man I thought it was Joe Rogan. Thank you.

Tinfoil hat time. Do you think Google intended this to work well? Or are we talking a lot more about Google and LLMs than we would have otherwise?

moistclump ,

I read your comment twice to try to understand why you’re being downvoted. I’m still not sure, seems like an innocuous take.

moistclump ,

I don’t know about the “should be counting blessings” part but I am surprised that he’s surprised by the price tag too.

Congrats! How had you learned about it? How did you use it?

It’s a mother fuckin plant party is what it is.
