20yrs ago I had to help my comp sci housemate build a website for his module. I was not a CS student.

Some things never change.

As a total stranger who who doesn’t know you a dot, I can totally unemotional and impartially say that you received justice.

Speed kills, literally. And as an inexperienced driver, you shouldn’t be speeding a dot. Let alone anyone else.

If a kid had run out from behind a parked car, tree or whatever then you have a much better chance of not killing them if you’re going the speed limit.

The fact that you were even caught, while armed with all the knowledge you have about increased deaths and thus increased demerits, tells me you should have made better choices.

I have been caught speeding 3 times in my 20 years of driving and I deserved every single one of them, and more.

That you were able to further reduce your punishment is further evidence of the system working.

Frankly I think your posts reveal an attitude of a victim rather than a perpetrator, which is a shame because you should probably have taken away something about the need to not speed in order to not kill people.

Everyone thinks they’re a great driver, and no one thinks it’s going to be them who has the accident that kills someone. But that’s the thing about accidents, they’re unpredictable and undesired.

All that said and done- if you were speeding by less than 10% I think it’s harsh and I’m glad you got to reduce the punishment! Over here we have 20mph zones to protect kids and 7kmh over is inexcusable in my book.

el_abuelo ,

Ad hominem attacks always reveal the character.

el_abuelo ,

Couldn’t get on with Jellyfin…emby however has been fantastic!

el_abuelo ,

This is despicable. What specific service was this? So I know how to avoid it if it should resurface.

el_abuelo ,

My use of the word despicable instead of disgusting probably threw you off

el_abuelo ,

I see. Sorry for the offence.

Alt: a single pane comic in which a person says to another person: "silicate chemistry is second nature to us geochemists, so it’s easy to forget that the average person probably only knows the formulas for olivine and one or two feldspars.

The other person says: “and quartz, of course”

The first person replies: “of course.”

The caption to the comic reads “even when they’re trying to compensate for it, experts in anything wildly overestimate the average person’s familiarity with their field”

el_abuelo ,

And didn’t he maim someone? Took the life that person could have had.

el_abuelo ,

I think you need to be intentionally naive, or just an absolute shitbag, to want to vote for lower gas prices at the cost of increased human suffering. Let alone whether it’s something Trump could even deliver.

el_abuelo ,

Isn’t the average life expectancy caused by infant death? Anyone living through pubity probably had a good chance of living to 70.

el_abuelo ,

Yes. And that’s why life expectancy of a 20yr old was 60yrs not 80+.

Source: ourworldindata.org/its-not-just-about-child-morta…

el_abuelo ,

In 1885 the legal age of consent in the UK was raised to 16. The average life expectancy of adults had barely changed.

So while this disproves your correlation theory, it’s also important to remind the reader that correlation is not the same as causation. Society, the role of government, the rule of law and its encroachment on personal choice changed hugely from the 13th Century and 17th Century - I would therefore claim that society would not have been accepting of paedophilia in the 13th Century despite the lack of law.

Sexual desire of prepubescent children has, as far as I know, never been considered the norm.

I’ve been going to the gym 4 times a week for 2yrs and I’ve been asked exactly one time to spot someone. Not to contradict you because it definitely happens, but some gyms don’t have that culture, like mine.

el_abuelo ,

Speaking of being an old man, let me tell you:

“The future is now old man” != “The future is now, old man.”

I genuinely tripped over this sentence thanks to the lack of punctuation.

el_abuelo ,

I can’t imagine cheating being a huge problem I’m a game with only 5-10k players that doesn’t have MTX. There’s just no incentive there to buy cheats.

Maybe this is the fix they should do, rather than spend money developing a decent anticheat that they then also won’t maintain. Cus money.

el_abuelo ,

It’s a good thing they included the coin for scale otherwise we might have just assumed this person had Trump sized hands (another completely valid and totally real unit of measure, the greatest unit of all time actually)

el_abuelo ,

That’s the fun part. We’re all broken in some way.

el_abuelo ,

Yes! I got a new error!

el_abuelo ,

Sometimes I even stand up.

el_abuelo ,

That’s not an error though, so maybe that’s what you’re after!

el_abuelo ,

What’s the ableism in the comment? Sincere question because I thought I knew what it was but can’t spot any here so I must be ignorant.

el_abuelo ,

And the good thing is you’ll have plenty of warning because your government is unlikely to join the war against the nazis for a good couple of years into the war against the nazis.

I jest…but kinda not really given current US foreign policy (or that of the past 100yrs tbh)

el_abuelo ,

Are you now a mechanic? If not, why not?

el_abuelo ,

Good scientists will just let you know the potential consequences and let you decide what to do.

Take global warming for example…

el_abuelo ,

Huh? I’ve worked with TypeScript + React for the last 5yrs and the only time I see OOP is when someone’s done something wrong.

Maybe you’re thinking of old react with class based components?

el_abuelo ,

I completely agree. I taught JS/TS for 5yrs and I always emphasised that the ‘class’ keyword was just syntactic sugar for what was already available in prototype inheritance of JS.

el_abuelo ,

Huh that’s interesting…I hate beer, lager and coffee, all everyday adulting things…I wonder if I have this gene.

el_abuelo ,

It tastes really bitter to me. I don’t understand how people can drink it. Tried it black, white, with sugar, without.

Love the smell of coffee beans though. If coffee tasted anything like beans smell I’d be drinking that stuff non stop.

el_abuelo ,

I dislike all coffee flavoured things I’ve ever tried, including ice cream and chocolates.

el_abuelo ,

Oof that’s very closed minded of you.

el_abuelo ,

You are wrong.

This war is also in the interests of Putin.

Putin decided to start the war of aggression.

Putin invaded Ukraine.

Ukraine gave up its nuclear arms on the guarantee of security from Russia. Russia has violated that guarantee by invading them.

Putin can end the war today.

US can not end the war today. Even if it left Ukraine alone, Ukraine would still fight to the end.

EU can not end the war today. See above.

The fastest and easiest way to end the bloodshed is for Russia to withdraw today.

Leaving Ukraine to defend itself wouldn’t even end the bloodshed. After Russia has completed its revised objectives it would invade the entirety of Ukraine under newer revised objectives. Then it would invade other neighbours under other revised objectives. The bloodshed would continue until the USSR is reformed and a new cold war begins.

Those suggesting the only way to end the bloodshed is through capitulation to the aggressor need to study their history better to see that capitulation to the aggressor never stopped an aggressor, it just lead to them going further until stopped.

Imagine if the USA invaded Mexico - no one would be saying Mexico should end the bloodshed. And the USA’s adversaries sure as hell would be doing everything they can to help Mexico.

For those in the back: Putin withdrawing from his war of aggression is the only known way to end the bloodshed today. All other solutions would result in further bloodshed.

el_abuelo ,

Pay walled.

el_abuelo ,

That’s not at all what I meant.

I’m an ml user - just because it seemed okay to me when I first started with Lemmy - and now I learn it’s got a rep for being for tankies etc

If you look through my comment history you’ll see I’m probably just some lefty twit from Europe.

I by no means meant you should tolerate the scum that promote Putin or Pooh Bear’s agenda.

Just don’t assume everyone on .ml is a cunt. Be more open minded and less label driven.

el_abuelo ,

Oof that’s very closed minded of you

el_abuelo ,

That is damn funny. I don’t think we have the same thing in the UK as while we have many accents, they are so unique they sound nothing like any foreigner. I guess German accents can sound similar to foreigners speaking German?

el_abuelo ,

More plausible than there being rules around time travel that involve not attending parties? I think not.

el_abuelo ,

I thought in your original reply you were saying the most plausible thing was that there must be no time travel. This reply suggests otherwise, which I agree with.

el_abuelo ,

55499345

Why do I still remember this number.

el_abuelo ,

Not to be that guy - just to make sure you nail it perfectly next time - it’s “all your base are belong to us”

el_abuelo ,

No it’s base 10

el_abuelo ,

What did car mode do? Was it when it switched to big old buttons? Mine used to do that until I got Android Auto in my new car…so up until about a year ago

el_abuelo ,

Honestly this is what infuriates me when 2nd amendment enthusiasts say “UK cops should carry guns” - fuck off mate, we de-escalate and use non-lethal way more effectively than your wanker cops who only have a hammer and everything is a nail.

Give your cops a toolkit instead of just a hammer and you’ll see the difference.

el_abuelo ,

Yeah my comment wasn’t intended to be critical of the person I was replying to - it was infact highlighting their point.

American cops don’t tend to use tasers when the suspect is wielding a knife because it’s seen as a lethal weapon, to which they have a lethal response for. Or as another responder replied - the training is the issue, US cops are hardly short of equipment.

el_abuelo ,

Imagine the communal gasps when these folks realise that an entire generation cannot be generalised in such specific ways. There will always be sociopaths - all the while there is the human condition.
