TrickDacy ,

Wow, really? Sure is an expensive and necessarily painful thing to opt into or to normalize. I’d rather it be normalized to not get married in the first place.

naught ,

I think a divorce is like $80 where I am, but if you have to go to court obvs it’s a lot more. I spent almost nothing on my wedding, granted it was just friends and was an elopement. Marriage has big tax advantages for some, and it’s the only way my spouse was getting health insurance to survive this godforsaken wasteland. It also guarantees that they get a slice of my income if the unforeseeable happens and we split so they can survive.

I think people should not see marriage as the end goal, but be pragmatic about its costs and benefits, which I think you are getting at too

BolexForSoup ,

Bunnylux ,
@Bunnylux@lemmy.world avatar

All good points.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

When he says normalize, he’s not saying it is something that people should seek out. In case that was somehow taken that way.

The problem is there is immense social pressure, especially against women, to never have a divorce. It is seen as a failure, whereas sometimes it is simply the result of circumstances beyond our control or is just something one person, or maybe both, need in their lives.

I am happily married. Like many people we have had our ups and downs. Every couple should do everything they can to repair their relationship and make it work. But sometimes it’s just not enough. Sometimes you weren’t supposed to be together, sometimes one person has some issue that they just will never resolve, sometimes you find out things about your partner or things emerged down the line. We are not prescient, things change. So people should feel very comfortable divorcing without all of the social baggage that comes with it. Because divorce is inevitable, it is never going to go away. And it is a viable decision for one to make.

As for marriage, you don’t have to participate and to say you just want it to go away is kind of ridiculous because we both know that is not going to happen. So we deal with reality and accept that divorce is part of the marriage landscape.

Bunnylux ,
@Bunnylux@lemmy.world avatar

It’s not that expensive, I did it for $400 amicably. We had a fun time while married and I don’t regret it. Why not just make it easier for people to do what they want and not punish young people for making decisions.

Custoslibera OP ,

Oh I have issues with commitment and a constant feeling of ‘Is this the best I can expect?’ but I don’t regret my younger life.

My ‘weird’ sentiment stems more from me looking in from the outside at relationships where 20 year olds decide they want to spend the rest of their lives with each other. I can’t imagine missing out on potentially meeting someone more compatible. Can you really meet the most compatible person for you when you’re 20?

When I was 20 I was a very different person, I’m assuming that’s similar for others.

Other commenters have talked about how they grow with partners but I wonder if it’s truly possible to do that while being so ‘together’ with another person. Some things you have to learn on your own.

fastandcurious ,
@fastandcurious@lemmy.world avatar

Just because you matured late doesn’t mean everyone else does, a lot of ppl are exceptionally emotionally mature by the age of 16 or 17 as well, you should always take a decision based on your maturity level and someone elderlys opinion who also knows you well, like your parents, they probably have a good idea

CleoTheWizard ,
@CleoTheWizard@lemmy.world avatar

I honestly don’t know who you’re talking about. I don’t find most adults to even be mature people, especially in relationships. The main thing keeping adult relationships alive is just that they spend most of their time apart from their partner at work.

This is anecdotal but everyone I’ve ever met that made a high school relationship work didn’t make it work through “maturity”. They were just committed. Often, they were extremely immature and naive and were bonded by the hardships of their 20s.

Go ahead and ask people who were together when they were younger and made it work. I’ve never heard any of them say they were mature and knew what they were doing.

fastandcurious ,
@fastandcurious@lemmy.world avatar

Fair point, I think it is just that you should be mature enough to work with you partner together, or atleast one person should be at that time, and if they really love each other, then good

CleoTheWizard ,
@CleoTheWizard@lemmy.world avatar

The way I think about it is that the core idea is that you will stick together with your partner through everything and grow together. Most high schoolers don’t go in with that idea, they just have strong enough emotional connections that they stumble into that.

The maturity part of being an adult is knowing that’s what you should do and knowing how to do it without hurting the other person in the process.

It’s like dancing. If someone really wants to dance with you, they’ll be patient as you find your rhythm and you both learn to dance. Feet get stepped on but it’s the same dance. Getting older doesn’t teach you to dance. Being young doesn’t mean you aren’t light on your feet. Maturity in relationships is knowing most of the wrong moves and never dropping your partner.

Xttweaponttx ,

100% I agree with ya. Surprised to see so many that don’t. Interesting conversations going on in this thread though!

Lucidlethargy ,

Statistically speaking, 60% of marriages between people aged 20-25 end in divorce. Those who wait have a 25% increased chance of not getting divorced.

blanketswithsmallpox ,

So you go from about a 1/2 chance of divorce to about a 1/2 chance of divorce. Got it.

Sounds more like age doesn’t really matter and emotional maturity matters more.

A_Very_Big_Fan ,

The difference between 35% and 60% isn’t insignificant…

I mean you’re not wrong about emotional maturity but the less years you’ve been alive, the less time you’ve had to emotionally mature

NightAuthor ,

Just on the math rq, 25% almost certainly means 25% of the risk is reduced… therefore 60%->45%

fkn ,

Depends/sometimes… If it’s like you said then 25% of that 60% and you get 60-15=45. If it’s some rando looking at 60% total and 35% total and they go “oh neat one of these numbers is 25 bigger/smaller!” Then maybe not?

deweydecibel , (edited )

The business/work version of Teams isn’t free, you’re paying for it as part of the 365 subscription.

That’s part of why there’s a push to use Teams: companies see it as already paying for it, so might as well use it.

And of course there’s the constant barrage of fear mongering coming out of the security crowd that says the only sensible, secure thing to do is bring absolutely every fucking thing into a native 365 app. Because they fail to notice that the attack surface they’re so concerned about is a healthy software market.

spez ,

Oh, didn’t know that thanks! My comment is just school IT trauma lol.

intensely_human ,

It doesn’t even make sense in terms of numbers. If you’re paying people six figure salaries, that means they’re earning your company seven figures easy. If you increase the productivity of a person bringing in seven figures by 1%, that’s $10k minimum.

And yet they want to save like $13 per year to use a product that might cut their productivity by 5%

    I’ve been using it daily for two years and I’ve had pretty much nothing but problems. It’ll sit in the background and sleep or something, and then I’ll get five hundred messages dropping in all at once. I put teams on my work phone on the side so I can see if someone messages me.

    Sometimes messages don’t come through on the PC client, but they can be sent from it, meaning if I look at a chat on my phone it looks normal, but on my PC it looks like I’m talking to myself.

    Video calls make all the shadows in the OS flicker. There’s a lot of shadows now, never gave them a second thought before.

    The app has a tendency to spontaneously log me out during things, and then refuse to log back in unless I reboot.

    Sometimes it doesn’t detect my camera or microphone.

    Sometimes during calls the buttons stop working. If I’m sharing my desktop, I can’t stop sharing. If I’m muted, I can’t unmute myself. If my video is off, I can’t turn it on. If I want to close the rubbish and restart, I’ll need to go through task manager.

    Not a big fan.

My sister beat the shit out of me one time for sneaking in her room to copy a bunch of her CDs. Made a big song and dance about the ethics of music piracy!

    In that scenario though, your best bet would be to buy more than one CD, rip them to a computer with a USB optical drive, and make yourself playlists that are 8 hours long. I certainly would never advocate downloading music with filesharing software like soulseek.

    Lemmy for me is a detox from a hyperactive hyperreal world that by making itself exclusively about fun entertainment, allows one to be picked up and taken with the wind.

    anticommon ,

    To be honest Lemmy is just the right amount of content for me, and generally high quality.

    It has also gotten me out of my doom scrolling habits that were causing anxiety issues. Thank God for that.

    Serinus ,

    Lemmy needs moderation tools and then a big domain name. Then it’ll be ready to go.

    The single most important thing it needs is to send delete requests when a post is deleted from the original instance. (Either by a moderator or the user.)

    And something to clean up unused files would be nice, but that can be kicked off manually for now.

    AhismaMiasma ,

    Honestly I agree wholeheartedly about “just the right amount of content.” It’s enough for me to get a healthy smattering of interesting and confusing memes without sucking me in and letting THE SCROLL take over.

    Having free WiFi might also be nice. But the physical copy is more versatile.

    Or, just get a cheapo used tablet and keep that in reserve for people to view the menu if needed.

    aksdb ,

    Oh yeah, right. Even better.

    I’ve actually been to a restaurant in Prague that only handed out iPads as menus. 🤷‍♂️

    Waiter stares at you waiting for you to return the tablet the entire time you all decide to order

    CTRL-P

    Corkyskog ,

    Well for certain restaurants it makes some sense. Like if your a nicer seafood place all that shit changes by the week in price, sometimes daily. You don’t want to have to print out menus on nice card stock everyday and you also don’t want shitty looking paper menus.

    irmoz ,

    It’s been so long since i had to print something, it took me a minute to remember what CTRL-P does lmao

    If the QR code was just encoded text or an image as apposed to a weblink, then this could have been avoided. Although, I’m not sure how many QR readers support images, and if your phone doesn’t have a built-in QR app nor you have a third-party one, then you’d be SOL anyways.

    Sotuanduso ,

    Wouldn’t it be easier to show the image than encode it in a QR?

    uberrice ,

    I don’t get how people go abroad and don’t just get a local sim. In most countries, a travel sim is something between 20 and 40 bucks. In my opinion, that’s pretty essential.

    dubyakay ,

    Extended layover. Not going to buy a SIM for a day in Lisbon.

    uberrice ,

    Eh, guess so. I just never go for this extended layover kind of deal.

    And, because I’m European, I do not even need a different sim for the whole of Europe. Unlimited data.

    TurtleTourParty ,

    As a non European, prepaid sims in Europe are complicated. Some companies won’t sell sims to foreigners, some have little to no roaming. Some have activation fees that double the price.

    Some examples: in Germany you need to do a video call to activate your sim, in Italy most providers require you to have an Italian tax number to buy a sim. In Romanian most of the plans have a paltry 1 GB of roaming.

    Also most of the SIMs geared toward tourists don’t allow roaming.

    dubyakay ,

    I’m Canadian now but kept my Hungarian SIM, still paying it to this day after seven years. It’s 9EUR/mo for some paltry amount of data, but mostly just using it for online services that require a Hungarian or European phone number for MFA. I just bought extra data that counted as EU wide roaming data when I last visited.

    However the options for my wife were very limited as a non-EU traveller. I think it was €30 or something for ~5GB of data usable in Hungary only and limited to ten days (we stayed for 14) and added as an eSIM with the help of an app/website. It was not transferable to other EU member states, and this was one of the best deals we could find that did not require us to go to a physical store location. This included us checking offers for prepaid SIMs from the major providers (Vodafone / -Mobil / Yettel)

    That’s exactly why I prefer qr. I don’t need to touch dirty menus and before anyone says that they clean them every night. Doesn’t matter, they use the same watery rag on all the menus, they may not be sticky but they sure as shit are still dirty. I’ve worked at plenty of restaurants, including ‘high end’ ones. The only way to guarantee they’re clean is to just print out a new one for each guest.

    Anticorp ,

    Your phone is definitely not sanitary, unless you sanitize it.

    SkyeStarfall ,

    Your phone only contains your own dirt.

    It’s like saying you’re okay with sleeping in someone else’s unwashed bed just because you’re okay with doing that with your own.

    Anticorp , (edited )

    Your phone contains germs and bacteria from everything you’ve touched throughout the day, and every surface you have placed it on. You touch things and then touch your phone all day long. You wash your hands before you eat to get rid of all those germs, but if you handle your phone after that, then you might as well not wash your hands.

    Sotuanduso ,

    Remember kids: Every time you touch something, you get your germs on it. That also means that portion of your germs is no longer on your hands. So in lieu of washing your hands, consider touching every single surface you come across.

    Theharpyeagle ,

    It’s possible to have a qr code menu while still having print menus avaliable, get the best of both worlds.
