Not OP but if we’re talking about preferences I’d say most people who don’t find rehashed, samey jokes funny usually prefer jokes that take an unexpected route through a more thorough understanding of the subject they’re joking about. So instead of a new itteration of “JS bad”, for example, make a meme about how much better JS is than a popular language in a convoluted hyperspecific engineered circumstance where JS’s normally not good properties can be engineered to be more optimal than the competition.

    interesting_bat ,

Regarding the covid stuff, hasn’t he been proven right?

Masks have been determined to be minimally effective against covid (barring N95 I believe) and Fauci has been proven to be dishonest as shown in the leaks surrounding gain of function research in Wuhan. It’s effectively been proven the U.S. knew about the research, was funding(?) the research and in essence is at least partially responsible for the outbreak under Fauci’s watch. They attempted to downplay the actual origins of Covid-19 due to this association.

    ominouslemon ,

I reeeeeaally don’t want to go into that, but no: masks have been proven to be effective, if worn correctly, even non-n95 ones. It’s not a mystery that, if something is in the way of your spit, you’re not going to infect as many people. As for the whole outbreak origin debate, scientists went back and forth between the “wet market” theory and the “lab escape” theory. The last research I’ve seen was pretty confident in the “wet market” theory. No Fauci involved there.

    interesting_bat ,

It’s not a mystery that, if something is in the way of your spit, you’re not going to infect as many people.

The virus is so much smaller than whatever material you’re putting over your mouth that it hardly seems to matter at all. This “seems logical” but isn’t if you actually think about it.

As for the Fauci gain of function link: theintercept.com/…/covid-origins-gain-of-function…It’s less clear cut than I had previously though. It looks suspicious, but there isn’t certainty.

    Giooschi ,

    shatteredsword ,

Why would you say something so controversial yet so brave?

    Theharpyeagle ,

I have the opposite experience, I only watched it a couple years ago and thought the hype would totally kill it for me, but I actually ended up really enjoying it and EoE in particular stuck with me. I loved the idea that love is born of the risk we take of truly being known by other people.

I will say that the quality of the Netflix dub probably helped a lot. I know they changed some translations which kinda sucks, but overall the voice acting is so much better. No hate to Spike Spencer, he’s obviously a very prolific voice actor, but I think his performance of Shinji is at least part of why people thought he was so whiny. We were originally going to watch through the rebuild movies dubbed, too, but it was so bad we decided to switch to sub.

Evangelion is an experience. As others have said, I wouldn’t even bother trying to find the best way to consume it, just watch, and revisit once you get over the initial “wtf was that” feeling.

    Theharpyeagle , (edited )

I wouldn’t bother with anything weird, just watch the series through and then the movies in release order. It might not be “optimal” but I don’t think it needs to be. You can skip Death, though, since it’s just a recap (there was originally a year between the end of the series and EoE)

    emergencyfood ,
    • Original series (all 26 episodes)
    • End of Evangelion (optional, but recommended. This happens chronologically at the same time as Ep 25 and 26)
    • Everything else (optional, not recommended)

The OG series is the story Anno wanted to show. Some fans wanted a more concrete ending, so Anno gave them a concrete ending in EoE. Then some fans wanted a happy ending where Shinji gets the girl so Anno said fuck it, sold out, and made a series with a happy ending where Shinji gets a girl. But now some fans want a happy ending where Shinji gets the right girl so Anno gave up on them as lost causes and went and directed Shin Godzilla.

    erev ,
    @erev@lemmy.world avatar

I disagree. There’s a YouTube video essay series that breaks down the timelines and I really like their interpretation. Each Eva is the story Anno wanted to tell at each point in his life, as he grew and became a healthier person. Anno wanted the darkness when he was younger. Anno wanted the hope as he got older. I’ve watched all the Evas and I think I actually like the rebuilds more.

    emergencyfood ,

I still like the OG ending. I think the ‘darkness’ of EoE was partially a reaction to the death threats he got, and the Rebuilds feel unnecessarily convoluted (but the animation was great). Anyway, to each their own.

The robot that at every turn was curtailed by human lust and greed? That had to do horrible things because humanity lacked the foresight to see that charging a living being with “Doing no harm to humanity or by inaction causing harm” would be just awful for that soul?

Pretty sure Demerzel always worked in the shadows for the greater good. Especially when operating as Olivaw.

Seems to me like humans are the ones that kept messing up the laws of robotics. Not the other way around.

Thanks, I will check it out.

    Adm_Drummer ,

You’re in for a good couple of weeks to months of reading depending on how fast you read.

Really fun set of series. Reddit had a great Asimov sub with recommended reading orders since Asimov had the tendency to publish things in a weird timeline. Any way you choose is a fantastic time though.

lobut , to technology in Rabbit R1 is Just an Android App

R1s statement in response from the article:

“rabbit r1 is not an Android app. We are aware there are some unofficial rabbit OS app/website emulators out there. We understand the passion that people have to get a taste of our AI and LAM instead of waiting for their r1 to arrive. That being said, to clear any misunderstanding and set the record straight, rabbit OS and LAM run on the cloud with very bespoke AOSP and lower level firmware modifications, therefore a local bootleg APK without the proper OS and Cloud endpoints won’t be able to access our service. rabbit OS is customized for r1 and we do not support third-party clients. Using a bootlegged APK or webclient carries significant risks; malicious actors are known to publish bootlegged apps that steal your data. For this reason, we recommend that users avoid these bootlegged rabbit OS apps.”

So there’s literally no reason for this to have been a device at all.

AOSP and lower level firmware modifications

But it’s android, so linux, so GPL2, so they have to share these modifications (if they really exist). It’s bootleg until soneone sues them.

    redcalcium ,

You’d be surprised how many companies ignore GPL. Providing broken links to the source code tarballs, telling you to send an email request to get the code then proceed to ignore the requests, etc. Only the most famous case got sued, the rest simply got away with it.

    infeeeee , (edited )

Yes, I know, but that shouldn’t be a norm.

There was a case this year, where SFC, a nonprofit organization won against Vizio for LGPL violation. It’s important, because SFC was just a normal consumer, not the owner of the original code. So now just a random user can sue this Rabbit company, and they should win, more details here: blog.lukaspanni.de/…/the-significance-of-the-vizi…

Edit: the case is not settled yet, but ongoing since 2021: sfconservancy.org/copyleft-compliance/vizio.html

And there are other funny solutions, like when a Chinese “tech influencer/diy maker” Naomi Wu aka SexyCyborg just simply walked into the office of a Chinese manufacturer, and requested the source code in person: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vj04MKykmnQ

    woodgen ,

    AOSP is not GPL

    infeeeee ,

They wrote “lower level firmware modifications”, AOSP runs on Linux kernel, and firmware modifications usually mean they modified the Linux kernel. This device seems like a regular Android phone, and afaik this rules apply to all Android phones, that’s why Android rom cooking can exist.

    jj4211 ,

They may be compelled to release any driver code associated, however firmware is not covered by relation to kernel. Linux runs on mostly proprietary firmware. The “linux-firmware” package in many distributions that contains hot plug firmware is mostly proprietary blobs.

That said I doubt they had much significant firmware work, it may just be logo and some tweaked configuration from their SoC vendor. They likely had to modify AOSP a bit more to allow their launcher unfettered access to the device in ways not modeled by standard AOSP, but that’s user space that isn’t GPL.

    woodgen ,

This was a marketing post, not a technical one. Unless we see any git branches or ROM teardown we won’t know what they were doing. I highly doubt that they did any kernel patches though.

    cyrus ,

They’re possibly complimentary but not mutually exclusive. I think if they sold the form factor of the device over the phone that that would have been more honest marketing.

I love the dumb little form factors those guys do. The only thing stopping me is that I know it is overhyped bullshit which I will be bored of in a week. If it were easy to develop my own software to completely replace what’s on it I might be convinced.

Isn’t that what paint’s for? Seems like a lot of unnecessary plastic trash.

    MNByChoice ,

Apparently, the same gets in and corrosion starts. The second article mentions a city that stopped doing it.

    plz1 ,

Cheaper to do bags than re-paint off-schedule. Usually cities have a schedule for maintenance, and the bag, in this case, is preventative for rust without being off-schedule for painting.

    JungleJim ,

Maybe they reuse the bags. Bag up 5th Street, salt it, collect the bags and prep 6th.

    TheUncannyObserver ,

Salt resistant paint is industrial, and it’s expensive. Depending on the product, it can also be a two part system and need special preparation. And by expensive, I mean it can cost over a hundred dollars per gallon, if you aren’t getting a deal on it. That’s a big investment for a smaller town.

    Alexstarfire ,

That seems like chump change for something that probably already costs over $1000, won’t take a gallon of paint, and is meant to last for decades.

    TheUncannyObserver ,

You’re forgetting the cost of removing them from the ground to have them sandblasted beforehand. This isn’t latex water based paint for your wall. You don’t just toss it on top of whatever is already there.

    dezmd ,
    @dezmd@lemmy.world avatar

Thats why you paint it with the correct paint before you install it in the first place.

    TheUncannyObserver ,

Are you sure the correct kind of paint was available when it was installed? And how long of a lifespan does that paint have? Surely not the life of the hydrant. This isn’t a one and done sort of thing. This is something you have to do every few to several years, depending on the specific coating you use. Every so often, the laws change regarding what can be used where, and advances in coating technology means a specific product might only be available for a few years before it’s replaced with something else, if it’s replaced at all. Working in the paint industry, I can tell you that some products died when COVID hit and the companies that made them went under.

    this_1_is_mine , (edited )

You don’t remove them you strip clean and paint in place.

Lol down votes I’ve painted hydrants. You have obviously never. There would be no reason to remove them. Since you would also be disabling the hydrant to do it and what do you do if there is a fire? Here you dumb bastards.

    m.youtube.com/watch?v=MJnfpo0YcaI

    Pyr_Pressure ,

I imagine a fire hydrant is pretty expensive as well. Can’t imagine covering it in salt resistant paint would be that much of a price increase and even if it is I don’t imagine it would be cost prohibitive if it means a 20 year replacement cycle vs. a 10 year cycle.

If anything this may be protecting them from dog piss.

    TheUncannyObserver ,

You also need your pay to have each of them taken out of the ground and sandblasted before they are coated. Industrial coatings aren’t like house paint, you can’t toss on extra layers and move on.

    Pyr_Pressure ,

Well ya, that’s why you put it on when the thing is being installed. Not talking about a Reno/repair.

If they didn’t put salt resistant paint on it when they first installed the thing because it was a few hundred dollars more that would be stupid.

    TheUncannyObserver ,

Whatever paint was on it when it was put in will last for several years at best. What do you propose they do when the coating starts wearing? Advances in coating technology and the laws regarding them change every few years, so will you guarantee the coating used will be available to them the next time they need to apply it? What budget will they take money away from to strip the hydrants when that time comes so they can be repainted? Painting a hydrant is more than a few hundred dollars for the coating. You have to pay to have the previous coating removed. You have to pay for the new coating and any two part additives it needs, like hardeners or accelerators. You need to pay for the painters with the experience with whatever type of coating you’re repainting them with. For a hydrant, it would probably be some kind of industrial oil-based alkyd. Hopefully a direct to metal, although they might need a suitable primer for the coating they’ve picked if they don’t go with a DTM. That’ll be another hundred or so per gallon. You also have to pay for hazmat disposal of any leftovers from the job.

If you haven’t guessed, I work in the painting industry, specifically dealing with commercial and industrial grade architectural coatings. A job like painting all the hydrants in a town would be many thousands of dollars. In a city, it would be hundreds of thousands. A five gallon bucket of the product I would recommend for the use would retail about $900 per five gallons, although the sales rep would work with the city and whatever painter they hired for the job to negotiate a lower price based on how much they needed.

I’m not writing all this to put you down, or try to make you feel stupid. I’m doing it to point out that things that might seem like they have simple, straightforward solutions oftentimes turn out to be a lot more complex and expensive than people realize. Especially when it comes to maintaining critical infrastructure. This picture might be from a small town that doesn’t have the money to afford repainting their hydrants. It’s a lot cheaper to toss a plastic bag with some zip ties over it. If I’m being honest, it’s probably better for the environment too.
