Today I learned that the Brave Search engine has a tool that allows end users a high degree of freedom to customize the search results they're shown.

I know there’s some controversy surrounding Brave as a company, and I’m not a fan of everything they do, but the goggles feature in their search engine is a really interesting attempt to give users more control over their search results....

HughJanus ,

Haha, should have known you can’t post that shit around here.

But I agree, I use Brave and it’s awesome! They even have a private LLM!

HughJanus ,

Better question is “why not”?

HughJanus ,

A nice looking UI with good fonts, and a clean interface.

Pretty much anything beats Windows in that regard.

The ability to run random Windows applications with minimal fuss.

I mean if you REALLY can’t find a FOSS alternative, Bottles has been extremely successful and easy for me…

All without needing to use the terminal

This is the biggest hangup for me. Even if there is a GUI, most instructions will send you into the terminal nonetheless.

HughJanus ,

I can’t see Reddit anymore

HughJanus ,

The poor UI and lack of polish has been a big problem in design communities for a long time

I dunno what to tell you except that it’s not a problem now.

For all the deserved shit that Windows gets, it “just works” without ever needing to touch config or a terminal.

Most people don’t need to use anything other than a browser, which works fine.

HughJanus ,

Plenty of other places to upload images. I think catbox.moe is a popular one.

HughJanus ,

Why would they do that when people use this one all the same?

HughJanus ,

The other day it rewrote a registry key that prevented these pop ups.

This is what drove me away. There are like 7 people that figured out how to make these pop-ups disappear and Microsoft invested money to “patch” that “error” to ensure they were forced to continue seeing these ads.

When you get around to a new laptop, look out for one that is Linux compatible. Unfortunately many hardware OEMs don’t take the time to provide drivers for Linux, and that causes problems.

HughJanus ,

That’s cool but probably unnecessary. The vast majority of hardware works fine.

I definitely opted for an AMD GPU in my new gaming rig specifically to run Linux/ChimeraOS, and hopefully one day SteamOS.

HughJanus ,

Yes but you can literally have “known supported hardware” without literally building a “ground up Linux machine”.

HughJanus ,

OP said “the software and driver support isn’t there”.

Someone replied and corrected them to explain the software and driver support does in fact exist.

OP replied to say that what he actually meant was that it didn’t support the specific software and driver they wanted to use.

Seems like a perfectly reasonable conversation.

HughJanus ,

Someone buys an expensive car. They say “I cant use the railway!” Are you going to tell them they’re wrong?

Yes. Because they are.

We dont know if they live next to a railway line. They’re also heavily invested in the car and unlikely to pay out for rail tickets.

None of which indicates they “can’t use the railway”. It may not be their preferred travel method, which is fine (in the metaphorical sense), but to say they “can’t” use the railway is simply untrue.

HughJanus ,

So you don’t think it’s possible for someone to support a project and simultaneously acknowledge that it doesn’t suit everyone’s use-case?

HughJanus ,

This isn’t the brilliant revelation you think it is.

HughJanus , (edited )

This is really just common knowledge at this point.

E: looks like the CCP has even infiltrated the mods of this community.

HughJanus ,

Really not looking for whataboutisms to justify their atrocities…

HughJanus ,

one single guy who has stated it is his mission from God to bring down China.

LOL what? Which guy is that?

propaganda is incredibly effective

That much becomes more clear to me every day. I didn’t realize there were CCP trolls in Lemmy already.

HughJanus ,

You really should start looking into the sources for more articles you read about China

I do. I think it’s about time you gave it a try.

HughJanus ,

Dude what in the absolute fuck are you even talking about? Once again, I ask, why would the CCP send people around the internet to talk shit about them? This is a classic Trump tactic of accusing other people of the thing you’re doing. However yours is particularly pathetic and non-sensical. Bye bye now.

HughJanus ,

Just like that, hey? Good thing you invested as much time into that as you did coming to troll the readers of this thread.

HughJanus ,

Isreal showing us what an actual genocide of a captive Muslim population looks like

…are you under the impression that this is the first genocide in the history of the human race?

Instagram Users Shown Transphobia As Promotional Tool To Join Threads (neuromatch.social)

The link goes to this users Mastodon post on the subject. I’m going to copy part of the text of his post without having to post the Threads post they were shown. Click through if you want to see for yourself, avoid if such things are upsetting to you....

HughJanus ,

didn’t we create and use fediverse software like Mastodon, Lemmy, PixelFed etc in large part to escape the constant hate-baiting and algorithmic manipulation of companies like Meta?

“We” created the Fedi to have interoperable systems and to give users autonomy over their accounts and their feeds. That’s why there’s an option for users to block other users and even entire servers.

Why are so many in the fediverse prepared to throw their fellow fediverse users under the bus

No one is doing that.

If Threads was a fediverse instance, it would’ve been defederated from by just about everyone by now.

True.

Why are some people bending over backwards to give Meta a free pass?

No one wants to give Meta a “free pass”. We want a way for Meta users to see that they can leave the platform, escape the ads and data-mining without losing access to their friends, family, news, etc. It’s specifically because Meta is so terrible that we want to federate.

You see it as the Fediverse promoting Meta but we see the opposite.

‘Wait and see’ I hear people say

I’ve literally never seen anyone say this except FediPacters as a strawman. No one needs to “wait and see”. We know exactly what we’re getting.

HughJanus ,

Facebook is not federating.

HughJanus ,

The reason is called the Digital Markets Act.

HughJanus ,

Uhhhh well maybe you’re privvy to some insider information you’d like to share? Because they’ve announced no such intention.

HughJanus ,

On the Dec. 21 episode of “The Joe Rogan Experience,” which has been the No. 1 podcast on Spotify for the past three years

It should be noted that Rogan has an exclusive deal with Spotify so Spotify is the only place you can listen to Rogan, which is probably largely responsible for his #1 spot on the platform.

I believe that deal ends later this week. I haven’t seen anything to indicate it will be renewed.

HughJanus ,

He claims he voted libertarian in the last election but I feel pretty confident that won’t happen next year.

HughJanus ,

Never seen a clearer example of someone not being objective.

HughJanus ,

Good, they suck at it anyway. And podcasts are one of those rare things in this day and age that is federated, truly “open” and also mainstream so fuck them for trying to ruin that.

HughJanus ,

Shows like this should have zero input from executives. If you are not willing to let the show have free rein, you don’t deserve to host the show.

What if the talent wants to glorify pedophiles?

HughJanus ,

They won’t. It’ll break and you won’t be able to repair it before then.

HughJanus ,

I don’t believe the small phone gang is small, we just have one option: a pretty expensive iPhone mini.

You have it backwards. You have no options because your gang is too small. You used to have options but the market has moved far far away from that.

HughJanus ,

almost as if there IS demand for small phones…

There is but the demand is small. The smaller the demand gets, the more they flock to whatever options are available.

HughJanus ,

Not true. Many of the smaller phones on the market have additional features that the bigger ones don’t. Or at least they used to when they existed.

HughJanus ,

It looks like the future promised in 1984, if that’s what you were referring to.

HughJanus ,

You’re not paying to see ads. They’re just subsidizing the cost of the service.

HughJanus ,

It didn’t get fucked up by rain. They drove it on heavily flooded roads, according to Scots from the area.

Myself and about 3 million other Tesla owners can attest that they are not perturbed by rain.

HughJanus ,

an issue Teslas in particular have

I suppose you have evidence of this “issue” with Teslas?

HughJanus , (edited )

Just in case anyone thinks this is a problem with Teslas, I have driven mine through several dozen heavy rainstorms and even a hurricane and my Tesla does just fine in that.

And as everyone knows, science is comprised of my personal experience.

HughJanus , (edited )

Quality control is a problem with every product. Once you reach a certain point it just makes more financial sense to fix any issues when they’re discovered and reported by the consumer rather than going over it with a microscope. Most consumers don’t care about panel gaps.

Until someone completes and publishes a scientific study on the matter, and compares them to other OEMs, I’ll continue to assume that these are just anecdotes from click-hungry publications that know anything to do with Tesla or Elon drives clicks, because everyone I know and every Tesla I’ve seen (with the exception of S/X) is totally fine.

HughJanus ,

Why not what?

HughJanus ,

This post is about a single vehicle that was most likely driven in deep water, but even if it wasn’t, is not indicative of an “issue Teslas have”.

HughJanus ,

People hate on them because they are overpriced and they want complete control of your hardware and software.

You cannot repair or upgrade anything and you cannot install software they have not approved.

The experience takes a back seat to all of that. Never owned any Apple products and never will, unless the market or the EU puts sufficient pressure on them to cut out the bullshit.

HughJanus ,

Been running it at 1080p no problem for several days.

HughJanus ,

Technically open source in what definition?

By the literal definition of source code that is open.
