Would she not be considered a tourist for her trip to Mexico City?

theherk ,

Wait, so you’re saying the trip to the national anthropology museum was for work? Maybe.

theherk ,

Yeah those MacBooks are really known for their poor build quality and terrible efficiency.

theherk ,

You won’t catch me defending Apple’s repairability but you saying they need repaired often is completely untrue in my experience and that of the wider user baser. In fact their durability and longevity are very good. There are people still running around with 2014 models that have never been repaired.

I mean fuck their anti right to repair bullshit, but the machines are good.

theherk ,

It isn’t like I’m not willing to pay. My NAS setup wasn’t exactly cheap. But the user experience is just incredible. I had Netflix for ten years, and several others for some time. The experience is just better. Watching whatever I want synchronized with my wife across devices of any type is superb. Who else offers that?

theherk ,

Can you show the question you asked that led to this and which model was used? I just tested in several models, even slightly older ones and they all answered precisely. Of course if you follow up and tell it the right answer is wrong you can make it say stuff like this, but not one got it wrong out of the gate.

theherk ,

The human could be described in very similar terms. People think we’re magic or something, but we to are just a weighted neural network assembling outputs based strictly on training data built from reinforcement. We are just for the moment much much better with massive models. Of course that is reductive but many seem to forget that brains suffer similarly when outside of training data.

theherk ,

Humans do the same thing. Have you heard of religion?

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/702f0340-a5ed-4701-b8a9-89356f9d719f.jpegFair enough, but it does somewhat undercut your message that every model I’ve tested including quite old ones answer this question correctly on the first try. This image is ChatGPT-4o.

theherk ,

I’m slightly confused. Which part needs an academic paper? I’ve made three admittedly reductive claims.

  • Human brains are neural networks.
  • Its outputs are based on training data built from reinforcement.
  • We have a much more massive model than current artificial networks.

First, I’m not trying to make some really clever statement. I’m just saying there is a perspective where describing the human brain can generally follow a similar description. Nevertheless, let’s look at the only three assertions I make here. Given that the term neural network is given its namesake from the neurons that make up brains, I assume you don’t take issue with this. The second point, I don’t know if linking to scholarly research is helpful. Is it not well established that animals learn and use reward circuitry like the role of dopamine in neuromodulation? We also have… education, where we are fed information so that we retain it and can recount it down the road.

I guess maybe it is worth exploring the third, even though, I really wasn’t intending to make a scholarly statement. Here is an article in Scientific American that gives the number of neural connections around 100 trillion. Now, how that equates directly to model parameters is absolutely unclear, but even if you take glial cells where the number can be as low as 40-130 billion according to The search for true numbers of neurons and glial cells in the human brain: A review of 150 years of cell counting, that number is in the same order of magnitude of current models’ parameters. So I guess, if your issue is that AI models are actually larger than the human brain’s, I guess maybe there is something cogent. But given that there is likely at least a 1000:1 ratio of neural connections to neurons, I just don’t think that is really fair at all.

theherk ,

For what it’s worth, in spite of my poor choice of words and general ignorance on many topics, I agree with everything you said here, and find these fascinating topics. Especially that of our microbiome which I think by mass is larger than our brains; so who’s really doing the thinking around here?

Call Apple what you will, but suggesting the 9th highest revenue company in the world lacks understanding of how to leverage its brands doesn’t really make sense to me.

Apple is bringing RCS to the iPhone in iOS 18 | The new standard will replace SMS as the default communication protocol between Android and iOS devices (www.theverge.com)

The long-awaited day is here: Apple has announced that its Messages app will support RCS in iOS 18. The move comes after years of taunting, cajoling, and finally, some regulatory scrutiny from the EU....

theherk ,

I loved how blasé he mentioned it and moved right along. It is a pretty big announcement and I’m glad they are finally doing it. It will benefit many even if only indirectly.

theherk ,

But did it have that sweet, sweet local bus goodness?

Also if it is any consolation, 486DX266 was way after I got my first computer.

theherk ,

And Saint Ignucious, RMS, of course.

Worse at approximation but more deterministic.

Men with 'toxic masculinity' are more likely to make sexual advances without consent, study finds (phys.org)

Seems many on YouTube now has this over-boisterous very fake broadcaster voice. I did watch the whole thing, but my wife and I had the same reaction. Good message mostly, but tough to listen to.

Great reference. Great username. You’re going places.

One of the many things that suck about these situations is that the money comes from the community, so they get the worst outcomes on both sides no matter what.

theherk ,

Well that’s true in many cases, and may well be in this case. In some though, the city is self insured, in which case it comes from a fund set aside by the city. In others, if not covered by insurance, it can come from the coffers directly. So directly or indirectly - immediately or paid over time, it still comes from the community.

theherk ,

I don’t know the actual demographics, but I can say one sees a lot of Palestinian support in the streets. Many demonstrations and such. But I think the issue has gone well past the former xenophobic line. Seems to me many people I would have otherwise expected to be opposed to antizionists are still like, “maybe genociding children isn’t the right thing to do.”

theherk ,

I get this position, truly, but I struggle to reconcile it with the feeling that artwork of something and photos of it aren’t equal. In a binary way they are, but with more precision they’re pretty far apart. But I’m not arguing against it, I’m just not super clear how I feel about it yet.

theherk ,

And they both just keep coming back.

theherk ,

Like with everything, context matters. Sometimes it can indicate poorly structured control flow, other times inefficient loop nesting. But many times it is just somebody’s preference for guard clauses. As long as the intent is clear, there are no efficiency problems, and it is possible to reach the fewest branches necessary, I see no issues.

theherk ,

Maybe but I don’t think that is well tested legally yet. For instance, I’ve learned things from there, but when I share some knowledge I don’t attribute it to all the underlying sources of my knowledge. If, on the other hand, I shared a quote or copypasta from there I’d be compelled to do so I suppose.

I’m just not sure how neural networks will be treated in this regard. I assume they’ll conveniently claim that they can’t tie answers directly to underpinning training data.

I’m an Eagle and an atheist. I don’t remember being required to confirm a belief. But even though I was part of an organization in a very small very religious town, nobody seemed to care.

theherk ,

I get the sentiment, but that implies nothing good is being made. And even if the sentiment “nothing good is being pushed” were true, that wouldn’t be that same as not being made. Still tons of artists out there putting work in.

Close to 40 million Hispanics of Mexican descent live in the USA. You don’t think there is good Mexican cuisine there? Because in my experience, anywhere I find Mexicans, I find some damned good vittles.

theherk ,

Why do you assume that? Why would it not make sense to mean Mexican food when saying Mexican food.

theherk ,

I read this whole comment thread but somehow missed that one? What prompted this?

theherk ,

Probably, but I can’t help but feel you are what you accuse here, leveling an accusation at a target which doesn’t exist yet.

theherk ,

Fuck Boeing, but your comment was still a nonsense hammer in search of a nail, and what you said would come never came.

theherk ,

I reread all the comments. Please link to the specific one.

theherk ,

I actually did reread them, and I don’t believe I’m trolling. I am genuinely curious if you believe a comment here did as you claimed and if so which one? Please be specific.

theherk ,

Why categorize anything at all or even have adjectives? The point is that we categorize things for the sake of clarity. I’m or course not mad about miscategorization, but it can have an impact on understanding. Something isn’t true just by saying it.

The case of gender identity isn’t a matter of letting them be what they want to be; it is letting them be what the are.

Of course nothing is really happening here, but even if it were, it would be fine to complain about people identifying as something absurd. Those people are usually mocking gender non-conformity so fuck that.

theherk ,

You asked why do they care? I’m saying, if it were true, people might care because categorization depends on some degree of truth. So it is reasonable to care if people are categorizing truthfully. Conflating flippant categorization and actual identity I don’t think is helpful.

Again, this case is bullshit, but it smacks of the “attack helicopter” garbage where the implication is that trans individuals are just claiming to be something they aren’t, which isn’t true. And when somebody says “who cares if somebody identifies as a park bench” or similar, it doesn’t help. We care because one situation isn’t the truth, and the other is an honest telling of one’s identity.

theherk ,

I am concerned I’m getting wrapped into a discussion not in good faith, but this can’t be a serious question. If your friend tells you to come over. “It’s the blue 2 story house on the corner. Come on in.” But they really live in the brownstone next door… do you see the value of speaking the truth to one another?

Upon entering a hospital to see a loved one with very little time remaining you recall the text from your brother said “you need to talk to the tall doctor with brown spiky hair. I can’t recall his name.”

Can it be harmless, like me claiming to be slim and handsome? Yeah, but that doesn’t change that it would be better, in my view, to be candid and clear.

And also I’ll add, not to imply that claiming one is a season is somehow on equal footing as somebody correctly identifying their own gender.

theherk ,

Then they are mistaken, and I am a caring companion letting them know they should reevaluate their assessment and maybe see somebody. It really undercuts the message of the trans community to imply that identify ones gender is the same as stating something categorically false.

Self identity doesn’t make truth, it only asserts it.

theherk ,

Absolutely taking the opposite of my meaning. It seems to me you are saying a claim of one’s gender and a claim of one being a season are the same? Please state yes or no if you believe that to be true. If yes, I believe this is the scummy position with which I take issue. If no, then you have simply missed the precise point I’m making. That they aren’t the same. For one is a statement of the fact of one’s gender, and the other a false statement.

That is why somebody should care if somebody were to state, even if in earnest that they are a season or helicopter or similar. Because in the best case they are mistaken and in the worst case making a mockery of gender identity which I fear, though am not certain, you are doing here.

theherk ,

Periodically a conversation ends with my confidence that I agree with a person but a difference in perspective makes that unclear.

Rabbit R1 is Just an Android App (lemmy.world)

See, it turns out that the Rabbit R1 seems to run Android under the hood and the entire interface users interact with is powered by a single Android app. A tipster shared the Rabbit R1’s launcher APK with us, and with a bit of tinkering, we managed to install it on an Android phone, specifically a Pixel 6a....

I completely agree. If they take another swing, I hope they’ll make it much more open for development. Or just update these.
