I work at a MSP, and we support a variety of customers, some with quite old hardware. I still on occasion have to assist in replacing 1.8TB SCSI 7200RPM drives in a RAID array. Finding compatible drives gets harder every time.

chatokun ,

My manager doesn’t really care about that, and hence, I’m currently only in office for our monthly company meeting, and thats mostly to help out the new CEO have a room of people instead of just a zoom call. I do enjoy when I go in, but once a month is enough for me. If I were closer, once a week would be fine too, but I really benefit in a ton of ways working from home, and in office I’m usually just helping others out and twidling my thumbs(helping people out is a major part of my job, but I can still do that remote as well).

chatokun ,

My father is nicknamed Shaggy, to this day, in his 70s. Why is his name Shaggy? Well, when he was quite young he kept sucking his finger. Being the little hellions kids were at that age, they stuck his thumb in the ass of a shaggy dog, but he still stuck it back in his mouth.

Even if god exists religion can't possibly be the way to god

So I thought about this in the shower amd it makes sense to me, like praying and stuff never worked for most people I know, so a direkt link to god gotta be unlikely. That made me conclude that religion is probably fake, no matter if there’s a god or not. Also people speaking to the same god being given a different set of...

chatokun ,

What about praying to not die of cancer or for jobs and/or places to live? Or praying for a child to live, or for no Genocide etc. Lots of nonselfish prayers out there.

chatokun ,

Lots of people. You enjoy people dying for no fault of their own? I don’t need planes crashing. I don’t have a personal need of guns, and if there were no unjust threats, why is a gun necessary? As for crime, crime is really a construct based on a created morality, so that’s up in the air.

My examples were about innocent people suffering, and it feels like your response is “Who would want to live in a world where innocent people don’t suffer?” I almost think you’re joking, because that’s a seriously messed up thing to admit about yourself, much less assume everyone else agrees.

chatokun ,

If you think dying only affects yourself, then that’s already selfish, or sad. You have no family or friends who would mourn you? What if you’re the breadwinner, or you have young children? A person dying doesn’t affect only themselves.

chatokun ,

Sure, for you. If a young single parent who is the only one who can support their child dies, at best they’re hoping for nontraumatic foster care, but in many places, including first world countries, it can mean far worse for them. Still, I’ll cede personal cancer for the sake of the overall point. That was hardly the worst issue in my comment.

chatokun ,

That’s just your myopic opinion. Plenty of people live fulfilling lives without random chance of an early death being their meaning of living. Perhaps you’re misunderstanding my original comment. I didn’t say immortality (though several religions do promise that as an afterlife), nor did I say unlimited wishes. I mostly said stuff like fatal diseases, daily needs, and unfair deaths like genocides, etc. You added in plane crashes, which also isn’t necessary for a fulfilling life.

It sounds a bit like you’re a zero sum person, like not everyone in the world can have basic needs. As a reminder, we’re discussing this under the assumption there is a loving omnipotent we can pray to. If the world is so messed up that people can’t even expect to not die horribly of stuff that just happens to them outside their own choices, or where not everyone had an equal opportunity to just live a simple life and have their needs met, then that suggests that an omnipotent God decided to make life that way, and such a being is not deserving of my worship, and hasn’t proved their existence.

Honestly my knowledge of ranked choice voting is that it works better for reps other than the president, and that our basically one guy wins it all form for presidential elections feels like ranked choice would work less. I’m willing to be wrong. I’m not sure if I actually like systems where the majority party picks the head of state, but it does feel like ra ked choice voting makes it matter more there.

chatokun ,

He’s been on this tip for a long while, supporting Ron Paul and being anti-vax. Last Week Tonight did an episode on Vaccines, and he shows up in a no longer valid comparison of RFK Jr on the left, Alex Jones wherever he fits in, and even this guy. I remember him also calling for Ron Paul 2012, but doesn’t seem to be from this one, so hopefully I’m remembering that right.

Still, he’s been libertarian and antivax for a long time, and those communities have been heavily aimed at by fascists for recruitment.

chatokun ,

? Meaning of life is absolutely not what I heard about growing up. Mostly Holy Grail. Once I joined reddit years back I saw life of Brian stuff. I’m not sure I heard of Meaning of Life before you just mentioned it. I actually assumed you meant life of Brian until I googled it. I’m also in IT, and have been since '99.

chatokun ,

I like raw garlic in a number of dishes; gives a spicy sensation. Especially if Mediterranean style (as it was taught to me anyway).

chatokun ,

Nah, listen to the Behind the Bastards episode on him. He’s a piece of shit, and I’ll never feel sad on his behalf.

chatokun ,

Alright Nixon’s head, let’s get you to bed.

chatokun ,

I’ve heard dame used more often than bird myself. Honestly, not sure I’ve actually heard bird used… it’s like a vague sense of “I think I knew that… right?” and my brain shrugs back.

chatokun ,

Most survival builders that use natural resources. I’d see flowers I think I should gather, or trees I could chop down for wood, etc

chatokun ,

My brother and I (mostly him, just helped a small bit) used to distribute Anime this way. He’d buy laserdiscs of Anime like Rurouni Kenshin (OVA/Prequel)and Yu Yu Hakushou, then download translations for subtitles and time them on the computer, using a bluescreen pass through and onto some SVHS VCRs. From those two SVHS VCRs, he’d use 9 others to copy them onto VHS tapes for distribution via mail. He’d charge cost iirc, not making profit on it.

I’m 100% sure it would be considered piracy if the companies had a way to find out. Plus VHS tapes had piracy warnings on them back then anyway.

chatokun ,

He meant what he said. The plane is the hors d’oeuvre.

chatokun ,

Great, now I’m fighting metal dinosaurs.

chatokun ,

I mostly don’t ever answer calls I don’t recognize, and even the ones I do I don’t often answer if I’m at work etc. I’ve only answered calls when it’s for something important being delivered, fixed, or scheduled (recent examples in same order: TV, Internet, renting a place(less recent, but all I could think of)).

Xkcd did a what if on a black hole moon (getting it to collapse into one may be impossible, but a black hole the mass of the moon is theoretically stable), and it has the same conclusion, except just slightly colder instead of slightly frozen. And by slightly, I mean almost imperceptible.

I think it describes the person imo. Masons(profession), carpenters are useful jobs that help society, and honey is a food source so again a productive addition. Bumble is kinda cute but is dopey, so I’ll give them that. However the wasps are all “chad” in this person’s eyes as they are killers. Killers have a limited place, which is usually killing other killers. Still, a lot of the time killers add a whole ton of detriment as well. They really shouldn’t be idiolized.

chatokun ,

If I eat cilantro by itself and focus on the idea of it tasting like soap, I can kinds taste it. It still tastes good to me, just with a hint of soapiness. It’s not enough to ruin it for me, and I have to be looking for it.

chatokun ,

Nah, the way Microsoft and Edge work still enrages me. I just use both Chrome and Firefox atm, with Chrome behind my VPN and Firefox split tunneled. I’m still on 10, but when I have the freedom to do so I’m going to switch to Linux. I can’t just up and do it at the moment because I work through my computer and also game through it, so I need to have a ton of things ensured workable before I switch. That requires time and testing, and in an ideal environment a second system to run in parallel, which I cannot do atm.

I’ve heard our work may be purchasing work laptops for us, so I might be able to do my switch then.

chatokun ,

Wrong type of beeping, though I mistook it for that too. They mean an alert similar to the seat belt or door audible alerts. People who have some sort of device from their insurance ro monitor their driving get some types of beeps like this already (stuff like decelerating to hard).

chatokun ,

May I remind you Belle Delphine went all in on using weeb culture to get her success. Dunno if she has any actual affinity towards it. Also the amount of women showing off how “breedable” they are in some subreddits I’ve come across in the past.

chatokun ,

I dunno, why do you guys keep asking me?

chatokun ,

Sorta, it’s also a mental image thing and a visceral reaction. Like fear of clowns or trypophobia, there are valid reasons for the visceral reaction (being moist in certain situations can be quit4 uncomfortable and in some rare situations causes at least minor irritation or injury), but usually don’t apply for most circumstances. Clowns aren’t dead people, and most bunch of tiny holes aren’t insects or disease… well, maybe a lot of them are insects.

Visceral reactions are uncontrollable, so while it may be propped up a lot as a joke on the internet, I think it’s a bit condescending to assume something that doesn’t bother you doesn’t actually bother some people for real.

chatokun ,

Yeah, generally people like to take a small issue and blow it out of proportion. I’ve always liked Pineapple on Pizza, but I know some people who can’t stand any sweet and salty mix. Similarly, I don’t like coconut in sweet stuff, but I love it on its own and love it in savory foods.

I’ve definitely talked to women irl who dislike the word moist, from friends, coworkers, and family members. I don’t recall any men getting disgusted with it irl, (except from that one meme) though I can imagine some uncomfortable situations (moist socks, moist undergarments, etc).

chatokun ,

I had a coworker catholic who both said that statement, and also argued animals had no souls, so no one should ever get in trouble for animal abuse. Along with his ridiculously heated response to any government involvement in Healthcare, and the way he got close to yelling when discussing these topics while also claiming he was just being logical, not emotional. Why yes he did call women emotional, how did you know?

People like him scare me, because it sounds like if he could use some religious context to say I didn’t have a soul, he’d probably come to the same conclusion he did about dogs.

chatokun ,

She’s playing a collective of dumb antagonists, and Jeff may or may not be a collective of progressive thinking/experimenting people who were ignored throughout history despite their efforts.

chatokun ,

As doctor whatshisorherface said, the first percentage is just showing participant age group, as both lists add up to 100%.

chatokun ,

Would they have? Tesla, Toyota (prius brake issue), Samsung (battery fires and iirc dryer issues) Ford (exploding pinto iirc) Sacklers (opiates) all have blood/injuries on their hands from mistakes, willful negligence, or outright corruption and they’re all going strong.

Edit ah, I might be out of date on Perdue.

chatokun ,

Looks like maybe a “soft top” style roof? Convertibles and some jeep style vehicles have them.

Or maybe another damaged car, not sure.

chatokun ,

I pointed it out to someone in the car with me and my face probably had a smile, as I joked about how pictures don’t do it service how ugly/odd it looked in person. Then we switched back to whatever topic we were talking about.

Some people like odd shapes, some people make fun of it, some don’t care. There are plenty of things I’d never drive but might like to look at, some in appreciation, some in mockery.

My main issues with Teslas are company and owner issues. Issues with cutting corners, his involvement with manipulating governments for Lithium, and the wild way he hires and fires people due to ego (reportedly fired entire Supercharger group because lead wouldn’t do anymore layoffs, and is desperately trying to rehire talent).

I can discuss all that stuff with people without a scowl on my face, because I’m laughing at such dumb decisions. I don’t have any personal opinions about you really, other that you either don’t know that stuff or don’t care. I might make judgements if I confirmed you knew all that and still went for it, or if I knew you simped for him, but I couldn’t make that call just seeing one out on the street.

chatokun ,

Plus plenty of us Americans mock that stuff too. In the state I live in, a man was killed by people loving guns like this because he was black while jogging. At the time, I was living in a city called White, GA. Down the street was a lumberyard that flew Confederate and Trump flags. I’m a person who since I was young loved exploring places in woods etc, but I’m rather terrified to do it in this day and area, especially with my skin color. A lot of us are trapped by circumstances here, so that comment felt more like a

“You complain about America, yet you live there. Curious.” type of comment.

chatokun ,

You have so much to learn about people who feed into the Satanic panic. Cherry picking is by definition how they get there. One of Alex Jones biggest boggiemen for years was a subsection of a law that allowed medical testing on troops, and he always ignores the very next section that states that it all requires informed consent. Then lies and act like people would have no idea.

During covid he found an exercise that tried to assume 4 different future scenarios that may come into play, and ignored the positive leaning ones or nuetralish ones and went straight for the heavily authoritarian exercise because it used a possible pandemic as a background setting, then claimed it was all planned out and proof Covid was a bioweapon attack.

People like this willfully ignore things that give context, and will often repackage it without the context anytime they can.

chatokun ,

Part of the whole panic and cherry picking thing is also an important next step: refusal to do proper research. A simple web search would correctly show you that it’s harmless. One might also find sources that claim it’s actually satanic, but they’d find those in blogs, social media, or message boards, while legitimate and official sites would show the correct info.

It’s up to the person to determine which one is correct. Most logical people would go with the simplest and least sensational definition being the correct one, while those with a conspiratorial mind view would ignore such common sense and choose to panic.

chatokun ,

Well, we don’t really care about a natural emotion reaction in yout head. Once you start spreading it around and claiming something about it, then its a problem. If you just spread it as a “look at this weird thing I found, isn’t it funny?” That’s also fine. However, if you start spreading it like “can you believe this?” without checking into it, then you’re either gullible to the point of the internet being dangerous for you, or you’re complicit.

chatokun ,

When you aren’t an expert, then you try to find answers by looking it up, as I explained. It isn’t hard, and this one in particular is a common joke. On some subjects a simple search won’t work as well, I’ll grant you that. However you seemed hellbent on defending people jumping to conclusions without som3 due diligence. That’s on the person. Misinformation spreads because lazy people want to go off of gut reactions and not even make sure the stuff they spread is true or a misunderstanding.

Why are you so invested in not even trying to fact check? Apologies if that isn’t your point, because it sure feels like it.

chatokun ,

Yeah, they probably were. I might be a bit more sensitive because I’ve seen people ruined by simple stuff like this, and algorithms that encorage going further down the shock, anger, and fear pipeline. I’m pretty adamant that people fact check instead of being shocked, as those moms and aunties might become future Ashli Babbitts. That of course could be just me paying more attention to that side of indoctrination, because I worry what harm it could cause.

Still, I was mostly engaging in an discussion that cherry picked stuff is dangerous even if people don’t think it is. Plenty of people have been radicalized starting with jokes and minor misunderstandings that never got corrected. I try to at least steer people towards looking into things even occasionally on joke posts. It may be overreacting, but I remember a time where I was dumb enough to accept “Nice guys finish last” as a somewhat true joke.

chatokun ,

My younger sister has (in the past, quite a while ago, but still) gotten me a cease and desist during a visit and torrenting without a VPN, so I wouldn’t say no way.

chatokun ,

Being a support person, if I was rich enough to frivolously buy systems, I’d have at least one of each as a reference system. Yes, I know, vms, but that’s for saving money/space. Especially MAC I’d have some hardware too. Definitely not a main system though. I currently have a broken Mac and a cheap chromebook for that reason, though due to being broken the Mac is rather useless now. When it worked I often used it to help test/troubleshooting customer stuff.

chatokun ,

I don’t follow archeology directly, but every couple months I listen to the Unearthed! episodes of Stuff You Missed in History class, which goes over the prior quarter’s archeological news. A whole section is dedicated to reciprocations, because there are tons of complaints. UK museums still refusing to send back stuff stolen from other lands, items found to have been illegally taken, etc.

So it’s more if nobody the people who run the place cares about complains.

chatokun ,

Testicles make more sense because it’s easy to acquire, you just butcher the animal. Same with blood. Milk is also produced regularly with a little more work. Semen requires ejaculation AFAIK, which feels both much harder and much weirder to perform.

Sync and I was already used to it when I abandoned Reddit.
