At some point they are going to have ad channels with content breaks.

It’s actually fake, though. IP phones “play” that. Also, when on a call, they insert "comfort noise, that very low hiss you may hear, to augment the odd feeling most get with crystal clear VOIP audio.

Who would win: every human in the world vs. every animal in the world?

I’m thinking the animals would easily defeat us, since trying to get all 8 billion+ humans to agree on a plan of attack would be a near-impossible task. By the time we’d be done trying to coordinate a plan, I figure the lions and cheetahs would have already devoured us, not to mention the larger animals like the elephants....

Gardener here, I think it’s too late.

Cries in USA, paying $230/mWh. At least solar effectively zeroes out my usage via net metering, in the warmer months.

Irony is, a lot of larger office building thermostats are really only there for display purposes (thermometer), not for control purposes (actually functional).

Our profit margin demands you buy over-priced books from our shop

College material monopolies should be illegal, just like all other monopolies. Want to give students an education in the real world? Let the free market determine textbook prices.

It’s funny. Security folks say how insecure Windows XP is, and how it becomes compromised within seconds/minutes of having an internet connection. It’s like Microsoft took that as a playbook challenge to repeat as an OOTB feature, instead of waiting for malware to do it.

Doesn’t matter, diligence is still a must.

This is them smuggling onto foreign soil, no?

plz1 ,

Yeah, I made a similar but much less serious mistake doing that. Once.

They are replacing some of the sugar with it, not the fat. I’m a fan of both normal and the applesauce variants, but you need to understand the science behind the normal ingredients before you swap them out for others. Baking is science.

Teams is doing the same thing. I can’t go anywhere close to anything Microsoft without some Copilot I didn’t ask for getting jammed in.

Until you get hit by a card skimmer. Encrypted NFC is safer than a physical card.

So the weird part is it does reliably trigger a failure if you ask directly, but not if you ask as a follow-up.

I first asked

Tell me about Asimov’s 3 laws of robotics

And then I followed up with

Are you bound by them

It didn’t trigger-fail on that.

Or, we just want bigger vehicles. Pure supply and demand.

Or when playing a station, ans saying “Siri, I dislike this song”. Instead of disliking the song, it just restarts the station, and some times, it’ll even play the dame damned song again.

They are not deleting, they are editing. So the platform would have to undo those edits rather than just flipping the visibility flag.

It’s not enforcement if he can pay it with pocket change, it’s just a slight annoyance. Enforcement would be taking his means of breaking the gag order away (his access to social media).

plz1 ,

That’s likely the plan, but they have to start with known-working hardware configurations first.

Are there any NGO’s that are supporting / helping relocate impacted Floridian immigrant workers to more friendly agriculture states like California? Florida is increasingly proving that the cruelty is the point.

plz1 ,

Yeah, LOLing at this. He wouldn’t set foot in any country that participates in the ICC with an open international warrant out for his arrest. I think that whole thing is symbolic, though, since no host country is likely to risk open warfare with Russia by detaining their president, criminal charges notwithstanding.

There you go, giving us hope we don’t deserve.

That wouldn’t be reliable to trace gun ownership history without the GOP-contested national gun registry. I’d even be for a “states’ rights” solution similar to how vehicle ownership is tracked via the Title with the state’s DMV. It will never be perfect, but “not perfect” shouldn’t be the blocker of “any action at all”.

Yeah, Apple 2FA is infuriating, especially since you can do all factors from the same device. Kind of defeats the purpose of traditional 2FA/MFA. Also, companies that decide you 2FA experience has to use their app, instead of a standards-compliant TOTP app of your choosing…ugh.

plz1 ,

If I’m on my laptop, and the 2fa code shows on that same laptop, it defeats the purpose of it. The point is sortation of security privileges, ask this just adds more work while providing no less security to the device. It does protect you from remote compromise, though.

plz1 ,

Yeah my point is it does not protect the local device well. It does protect well from remote compromise though.

Cheaper to do bags than re-paint off-schedule. Usually cities have a schedule for maintenance, and the bag, in this case, is preventative for rust without being off-schedule for painting.

I’m more productive than anyone else on my team, and would argue more productive than the majority of people in my whole department. I use a single 28" monitor.

I don’t work any more productively with more screens. The distraction outweighs the benefits for me.

The optimist in me hopes this gets tossed out alongside hysterical laughter. The realist in me thinks the courts will cut it in half for them and give stern words, with no admission of guilt or liability for mismanagement. And I"m sure this paltry offering won’t even put a dent in just the cleanup, let alone cost to replace the bridge.

Good point

I’m honestly more impressed about that last line, running at 70 million for 17.5 minutes. Duration/stability being the key to this tech, that’s pretty impressive.

plz1 ,

Ad tech IS the tracking, so if you’re not blocking ads, you’re not actually refusing said tracking. I think you might be conflating cookies with being tracking (they are), but that’s only a part of it.

The only time I ever fell for a “lifetime” software purchase was back when Trillian (the IM client) was popular. That lasted less than 5 years. Then they released “Astas”, which was just a UI refresh, but they treated it like it was a whole new company and product. “Lifetime” is always a scam.

plz1 ,

Yeah, Plex lifetime was worth it.

That’s a twofold issue. Original dentist for sure, but also, that sliver of tooth should have been picked up over the years in routine x-rays you should have had during routine exams, as well.

I just listened to the Criminal podcast on that, recently. Fascinating cultural moment.

Wow, I can understand barring the prayer on campus, but kicking them out for the following year is pretty harsh.

I just went in and manually edited my display name to my previous asshole of a boss. Two can play this game. If they want to get rid of anonymous content, then let them deal with poisoned content.

Team Blind is decent, at least in the tech sector.

I wonder why all these news outlets are avoiding the use of the word mutilation, at least in headlines.

Biden backs Schumer after senator calls for new elections in Israel (apnews.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden expressed support Friday for Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer after the senator called for new elections in Israel, the latest sign that the U.S. relationship with its closest Middle East ally is careening toward fracture over the war in Gaza....

I didn’t know that either but I’d also never divulge that info on an inbound phone call.

Selective Service is “the draft”. It’s where the country can force you into military service.

Only for direct sales. Prisons could still just go buy through an intermediary, unless the first party sale contract also forbids that. Even then, it’s questionably not enforceable. It’d be like me selling my car, but doing so with a contract stipulating that the buyer can’t re-sell the car to someone that may use it for a particular (and legal) purpose.
