For now… 🖕🏽 They worded that so weasely, they’re just waiting for the storm to pass and for Legal to come up with some compelling reason why they’re totally “obligated” to make it happen, “hands tied” “so sorry” and all that.
Fuck Sony. They made this SOP way back when, and there’s no way they let this stop them forever. It’s all about profit, not what “we” want.
Or, more rationally, you all invested so much of yourselves into your gamer outrage campaign and built yourselves up as the underdogs fighting the big, mean corporation. And when, to your own surprise, you actually won and got all of your demands met without compromise, you still can’t let it go because you managed to incorporate all that upset over a video game into your personal identities over just a few days time.
So now, instead of celebrating your win, you’ll limply cling to your hatred of Sony for a few more days or weeks until everyone finds something else to get upset about.
I talk like I have seen this exact same thing happen over and over and I’m sick of capital-G Gamers throwing tantrums over every inconvenience. You aren’t Union Men fighting for your rights. You’re gamers upset by a TOS change to your new toy even though Steam was going beyond their own policy to honor refunds.
Aw, the gamer is upset I forced some introspection into their life.
But no, I’m sorry. You’re totally a noble warrior who fought back the evil Sony and now must remain ever vigilant lest Kazuo Hirai leap from the shadows and scream “Riiiiidge Racer” at you and take away your toys while Gabe Newell gives you your money back and sheepishly shrugs like “I know, right? This guy, man.”
This is such a weird thing to be upset over, and a weird side to take so passionately that you do.
I don’t even play Helldivers, nor do I plan to after this, it’s just on the one side there’s random upset people, on the other side there is the corp that got infamous for distributing straight up malware in a weird effort to enforce DRM. Why would people go back to being happy with a company that tried to fuck them over, and then walked its position back to the status quo with no commitments of not trying this again later.
The “random upset people” on the former side were perfectly happy to give their money to the “corp” on the latter side before the TOS change. This has nothing to do with how untrustworthy Sony has been in the past and everything to do with upset Gamers wanting to keep their outrage party going even after they got what they wanted.
The problem is who can you give money to for entertainment if not to the same 3 corps who have bought everything, and how else can you protest them doing stuff that’s outrageous even by their standards?
The fuck clowns are buying up our culture. It’s hard to not participate in it. I don’t play these kinds of games, but I’ve nothing on people who do. We should beat up the fuck clowns until they serve society again.
And just to be clear, I am advocating violence in the form of stringent regulations binding corporations towards socially beneficial paths. I advocate for violent anti-trust measures to the point even the execs don’t know who is still working for them and who has been broken off to another company to compete freely. And I want worker protections that cause mind-bending fear in wage thieves.
How about we just not advocate violence at all? Regulations can be helpful but also the government needs to make sure it is not creating unconstitutional laws that violate people’s rights, and that includes their right to make bad choices. Otherwise the law will end up more authoritarian than free.
Sorry, I went too deep into sarcasm in there. I wasn’t advocating for violence, just laws protecting society and people that are strong enough to deter corps from breaking them.
I saw that post earlier, but it seems in the picture like the demon (or whatever, I don’t want to pigeonhole) is saying “Kevin” rather than being labeled such. I didn’t get it until you connected the dots, so thank you.
But props to the Columbia U staff for walking out. In other universities this was just par for the course, and the faculty stayed put as students were arrested
I was given a free ticket to an event last night. I did it all using their web page. Their page was very slow and when I finally got to the point where it was supposed to show the ticket, it kept blanking the page right when the bar code would load. Luckily the gentleman at the booth could see it was legitimate and that there was a technical issue, so he printed it out for me.
He literally wrote the name of the artist, and if you had taken 5 seconds to look him up instead of writing a dumb comment you’d have had your answer without making others do work for you.
Let me ask you, what is it about the internet that makes you think it’s ok to be a rude asshole?
If we were at a table across each other, in person and I asked “is that AI art?” Would you respond the way you just did? Is it the lack of human in front of you that makes you respond like a petulant asshole? I simply asked a question and you’re behaving like a dirt bag
A closer analogy would be if we were at a table across from each other, in person, and you asked “where can I find a table around here?” In that situation as in this one, you might get some justified razzing in response.
The table would already be right in front of you and you would be actively sitting at it when asking where the table is. There’s nothing wrong with asking a question, even a silly one - inquisitiveness is good! - but if you want the person also sitting at the table with you to actively refrain from noticing the clear absurdity of the situation, that’s probably not going to be the easier path for most folks.
The comment to which you were replying was not only the name of the artist, but the link to more of the exact info you were asking people to give you. If the level of “nice” you generally expect from folks requires that amount of hand-holding, you may be inviting frequent disappointment for yourself.
I bet the constraint here isn’t what’s serving the website but either an external dependency that they don’t have control over so that can’t scale or a relational database that they didn’t have the budget or expertise to scale
Edit: or just that humans have to actually look at it and you’re waiting to talk to one
My local government does it all async to avoid that issue
No thanks, I prefer my internet experience to be linear and iterative with no fail backs for any exceptions. C’mon dead process without an error report!
If it were the US, I’d guess the constraint was political meddling by somebody who wants everyone to hate the agency so they have an excuse to privatize it, but I don’t know if Ireland has that kind of problem.
Nah I’m sure the Raspberry Pi sitting in a manager’s desk drawer is a totally sufficient server. His nephew that’s “good at the computers” even said so!
Saaaame. Been using Mint almost exclusively for 5-10 yrs and i still feel like im playing in the wading pool of what u can do with it. I learn more as I need to, and generally enjoy that process. I always feel super satisfied with myself when i use the terminal, even if its sudo apt-get install Firefox.
Whenever I need to do something, I’ll figure it out. Sometimes it’s a pain, like getting VNC to work. But then I’ll write down the most important bits and duly forget the rest. I just want this stuff to work.
Steam before proton was okay for stuff like Fallout 3. Needed some hackery with Wine prefixes and getting the right DLLs in there but eventually worked. Older GoG games like Alpha Centauri were fine with DosBox.
he got famous by giving away money, now he’s giving away money with extra steps (those steps being various degrees of having to “earn it” through challenges) so he’s basically became a game show host
tbh despite how accurate this description it i understand why he does that. To give away money you need to have money, and he makes his money by creating videos on YouTube, a video where someone does a challenge and earns a million dollars is going to be much more popular than a video of him just walking around and giving people money (again)
Yup. It’s like an actor getting typecast as a tough guy who always kicks ass and never gets his ass kicked, makes tons of money from it, and then everyone complaining about him only ever playing a tough guy.
I’m sure a few names come to mind. But they’re rich and stuck in that role because most people subconsciously agreed they should be rich and stuck in that role (by liking those movies and going to see them).
I mean I just think of him as zoomer game show host. So that’s a bit harsh.
Most of his challenges either are straight rips or would feel right at home in survivor/fear factor, then some challenges are just big brother straight up.
But I suppose you can say the same thing about all game shows that have normal folks on it competing for life changing amounts of money.
Business owners are just guys who will give away money as long as the peasants work for them!
Ya. That’s kinda the standard, the problem comes from exploitation. “Perform on an international stage to potentially be paid a small percentage of profits” seems pretty remarkable.
Personally I think HP is missing the point focusing on putting drm on inkjet refills, it is only half committing to the business strategy.
The existence of a finished, printed paper begins at the moment of conception when the customer conceives of wanting to print a document. Really every step after that point (including the conception step itself) is monetizable by HP and more importantly rightfully owned as intellectual property of HP that you are technically stealing if you don’t follow through with actually printing the document on an HP printer.
HP is just leaving all of that money on the table, or maybe the printer market is just too heavily regulated for HP to innovate properly in a healthy free market.
Congratulations you are now subscribed to Business Facts.
As you’re friendly (and helpful!) algorithm how about I recommend you some similar content you might be interested in subscribing to such as unhinged rightwing political commentators outright calling for violence, batshit crazy conspiracy videos and vape pen reviews?
Ah sir, you ommm, made it so that every page of paper we use while working is deducted from our time off by HR (1 piece of paper = 10 minutes vacation time).
The problem is that they can’t control open source drivers. They could, however, release a printer that ran on proprietary closed source drivers. But they’d have to spend money on developers to maintain that code whereas right now, drivers are more or less stable and developed for free.
What they could do is require the use of HP printer paper, with embedded RFID or watermarks that would be readable by HP printers. I’m honestly surprised they haven’t gone down this road.
See this is exactly what I am talking about when I say HP is leaving money on the table here, when thinking about these topics you just utilized the intellectual property of the following products for self improvement, recreation and social benefit:
Economically Recoverable Use Of Products By Thought (ER-UOPBT)HP EcoPrecision Advanced Document Rendering Suite™ (HP EDARS™) For the simple act of translating your document into printer-readable format. HP SmartCartridge Alignment Pro+ System™ (HP SCAPS™) Ensures your ink cartridges are perfectly aligned for each print, for the low price of continued subscription. HP QuantumInk Subscription Service™ (HP QISS™) Provides monthly ink deliveries while monitoring your ink levels remotely through quantum encryption. HP PrintAssure Secure Environment Technology™ (HP PASET™) An exclusive service that creates a secure printing tunnel to protect your documents from prying eyes. HP PaperLoad Ultimate Feed Mechanism™ (HP PLUFM™) A premium paper tray enhancement that promises to handle even the thinnest paper without a single jam. HP ColorSync Precision Match™ (HP CSPM™) A color management system that requires regular calibration via an online service to maintain color accuracy. HP PageSense Automated Counting Service™ (HP PACS™) A cloud-based page counting solution to ensure you’re billed for each dot of ink on the paper. HP IntelliConnect Wi-Fi Booster Pack™ (HP IWBP™) A proprietary Wi-Fi extension service designed to maintain a robust connection between your devices and the printer. HP ClearText Font Rendering Optimization™ (HP CFRO™) A patented font enhancement service that sharpens the text on your prints, available in 12-month access packages. HP OneTouch Print Harmony Experience™ (HP OTPHE™) A personalized one-button printing interface that’s locked behind a bi-monthly membership fee. HP Printalytics Predictive Maintenance Hub™ (HP PPMH™) An AI-driven analysis tool that predicts printer issues and schedules interventions, all reportable to your HP Premium Support Account Manager. HP UltraPrint Resolution Enhancement Layer™ (HP UREL™) A downloadable print resolution enhancement that requires a special code from your HP Print Quality Loyalty Program. HP FirstSheet FastTrack Technology™ (HP FFST™) Speeds up the printing of the first page of any document after a minor upgrade to your printer firmware. HP WhisperMode Acoustic Dampening Service™ (HP WMADS™) A subscription-based service to reduce printer noise with each cycle, for a more serene office environment. ___
Thus you are clearly already a customer of HP, and the exchange of HP giving your mind the imaginative capacity (Thought-As-A-Service) to visualize a printed document it is only reasonable to bundle with a subscription you pay to HP.
Are you going to tell me the US Supreme Court isn’t dumb enough to make this federal law? Also, if you think my joke was wayyy too much of a logical stretch to make any sense you should see what these people think about women and their bodies.
I mean, hypothetically couldn’t they mix some proprietary chemical formula into the ink and incorporates some device that analyses the ink chemistry and doesn’t print if that proprietary mixture is not present?
Even better, each and every particle of ink can be a network connected nano-machine, the usage of which, is available as a subscription.
If and when your subscription expires, all ink connected to your account will stop working. Ink previously used for printing, will fall off the paper.
This can be prevented, on using special HP papers, with an ink-capturing coating of nano-machines which can be separately subscribed by the owner of the product of printing.
Meaning, now you can print books with HP printers and the customers can pay you a subscription fees to keep the book alive. Alternatively, they can print on HP paper and you can pay subscription fees to HP yourself.
I call it IaaS (Information-Retention as a Service)
I thought the joke here was that even when they’re not locked your average inkjet printer is a hot pile of garbage machinery that works only when the planets align and you’ve sacrificed 3 goats and a your firstborn.
Meanwhile laster jet printers work most of the time except when they don’t.
Edit: one time I wanted to buy more ink for my inkjet and there was a brand new inkjet printer that came with ink that was less expensive than a new cartridge. (Of the same size)
The new printer was $30 and worked just as poorly as my $150 inkjet.
I’ve done printer maintenance for years among other things and inkjets are literally designed and manufactured in the deepest layer of hell.
I was looking for a new printer and I also wanted to print photos. Problem with inkjets is that you have to use them regularly or the ink dries out so that was no option either.
I eventually settled on a black and white laserprinter, which is cheap to buy and run (a new 3000 page toner is like €40) and a Canon Selphy CP1500 for photos, which uses dye sublimation so no issues with ink drying out. It only prints 15x10 photos which covers the majority of my needs, for anything larger I want to use a good photo printing service anyway.
I mean… Young people don’t know things yet… Isn’t that normal?
I get feeling existential about the passage of time, but… Sad? Laughing? Maybe I’m imagining it wrong, but I dunno. Maybe I’m just the young person in this occasion.
I mean… Young people don’t know things yet… Isn’t that normal?
Depends on the context I guess. If this is a professional IT context in which the 25yo is expected to be proficient enough on a Linux system to edit a text file, not knowing that vim exists is kinda sad.
… I don’t know if I’d call it sad, as much as kinda baffling. Vim was on every package manager list I’ve seen, under text editors… Big stylised letters, how does one miss that?
I feel like it’s someone who only uses Linux specifically for (and because of) their work, and has probably never tinkered and casually browsed around in it.
Yeah, I can see how that can be sad, like a person who doesn’tactuallyshare your culture/hobby after all.
He really has been! I know the comment is based on a joke, but when I learned who Bernie Sanders was when he was running for president I had a “oh shit it’s that guy!” moment.
Pretty much any documentary I had watched about any random topic where there was a segment about US government involvement he was always on the right side of whatever was being discussed.
It’s when I gave up on US politics. If only it was such that Hillary won… and not that DNC actively conspired to make that happen.
As messed up and anti-democratic so many things are in the US leading to “pick one of two things”. The whole system is fundamentally broken when the selection of those two things is corrupt.
But… when a person I wouldn’t trust to be mentally suited to pack a bag of groceries* or park a car*, is elected president, and gets to pick several supreme court justices… The world isn’t laughing at the US. They were laughing at the thought of Trump being in he primaries. They’re deeply concern that a complete fuckwit ended up in charge, and what that might lead to.
Democracy (i.e. the system of governance) requires informed voters. GOP (the political party) requires uninformed voters.
The only way you can vote Republican or think that the orange baboon can be entrusted with anything more important than throw feces, is one of two thing (or both): 1) you are an idiot / uninformed 2) you are morally corrupt
*: this isn’t a put down directed at people who do these things, but that it requires some mental function in order to not crash the car, or steal some groceries… and I would be equally comfortable with Trump in that regard, as with a 6 year old. Which is to say: not at all. Which puts in perspective what I think of him being president.
Honestly, it probably wouldn’t have made a difference. The ‘Bernie Bros’ that voted for Trump were largely a myth, not really enough to swing the election, and he’s far enough left (as far as American politics go) that it probably would have ended up with Trump winning more votes from Dems that claims to be centrists.
Aside from that, he’s far enough to the left of most Dems that he probably wouldn’t have been able to get the Speaker to introduce any legislation he favored, so it would have been the same kind of compromise bullshit that Dems always fall for.
Now, Gore? If SCOTUS had let the count proceed instead of calling it for Bush prematurely? Yeah, the world would be a very, very different place.
Ah, I didn’t know that. Where I live, they kind of always do (or did, when I was a child and still ate meat) but Wikipedia days the Italian salami typically doesn’t have it.
