+1 to this. I found myself wanting to watch them/hear them. I also found myself wanting to know what their favorite (fill in the blank) was. You know someone, but sometimes those specific tangible things about their preferences get forgotten.
Shouldn’t be necessary, as Google accounts have a setting for notifying addresses you provide after 3 months of no activity - support.google.com/accounts/answer/3036546?hl=en. The account deletion was for accounts not accessed for two years, and I think it excluded those with YouTube video channels.
I would say it’s probably the philosophy of the fediverse that limits them. There is a spectrum of opinions on every subject, including strong opinions and dangerous ones, sometimes both at the same time.
Having a safe space requires either control or exclusivity in my opinion. The fediverse affords you little control of instances outside your own besides outright defederation and banning of external users. Though arguably that lack of external control is one of the benefits of the fediverse as well. However, if their goal is a safe place for those they feel are disenfranchised and marginalized, they might be right that this isn’t the tool for the job. Though, adopting a different platform or strategy might limit their reach. I think that is their dilemma.
Aside from beehaw… The lack of a central control structure within the fediverse is fascinating to me. It’s reminiscent of the old internet, where everything was ran as its own little web island, and yet it has many of the benefits of the mainstream “mass market” internet of today. Over time, it will be an interesting experiment to study and be a part of.
I feel like I've given my answer to this question regarding Beehaw once before...
But as I see it, the main driving force and overall source of value for services like Lemmy, Kbin, Mastodon, etc., is federation. That is to say, federation among a wide variety of different users and servers across the fediverse using protocols like ActivityPub is what sets this entire thing apart from legacy centralized and corporate social media, like Reddit or "X".
I was initially on Beehaw myself and I liked the mature and kind atmosphere, but I ended up splitting for Kbin due to issues with defederation (on top of being curious and interested in Kbin as an alternative software to lemmy). But whether we're talking about "Beehaw.org" or "Kbin.social", in my view the federation is a huge part of the appeal, and I wouldn't see myself continuing to use a server if it cut itself off from the rest of the network, regardless of whether they did it for "good reasons" or not.
Like, if Beehaw wants to be just a significantly smaller and more highly moderated centralized alternative to Reddit, that feels like a pretty weak pitch which, at best, might end up with a community roughly the size of a classic forum. I'm not really interested in that. I want the Fediverse to succeed as a decentralized, open, scalable, and community-moderated alternative to legacy social media. Frankly, my interest in Beehaw as a community hinges completely on it being a part of that movement or not.
I can understand how federation may have posed significant challenges towards your goal of detailed moderation and creating a safe and friendly space, but only in the sense that you were possibly not fully prepared for the level of exposure to a large number of federated users. But even so, if Beehaw is ever to grow into something bigger (which, to be honest, is not a given, especially if you set out on your own as just another disconnected and insular social media website), you will eventually have to deal with the harsh reality that the kind of moderation that you're interested in doing is going to be a significant challenge as your community scales, federated or not. (For example, you may be prepared to moderate content in English, but are you prepared to moderate content in other languages? How will you know when someone starts spreading disinformation and hate speech in Burmese?)
Finally, I think you might want to consider the general movement towards federated social media. Between ActivityPub and the Fediverse, Meta's interest in federating Threads, BlueSky being developed around federation to some extent, federation support in things like WordPress, and a number of other social media platforms tip-toeing their way into the idea, I personally feel that there is a pretty interesting paradigm shift happening right now. Some of that has to do with moderation, responsibility and government pressure on big tech, I think.
But nevertheless, social media is gradually moving towards federation, and I think that's a good thing for the internet as a whole. You nice people at Beehaw will really have to search yourselves to determine whether you see the value in federation (both in terms of connecting people, but also in terms of allowing various communities to self-moderate to some extent) or not.
I do hope you'll stay, even though it means facing the growing pains of moderation challenges sooner rather than later, because the fediverse is better with us all connected and communicating together. I'll be sticking with the fediverse with or without Beehaw, but I do wish you all luck in your goals should you decide to set out on your own.
It’s over for beehaw already. Once they decided to ban everyone from the largest lemmy instance, it was over. They aren’t important to the fediverse, period, and never will be with their current leadership who have no idea what they actually want it to be, apart from their personal internet fiefdom.
The short amount of time I was there, it felt like a community built for the moderators and admins, not the users themselves. Frankly the fediverse is better off without them, so I hope they do leave.

Fair. Personally I prefer wireless, since my headphone wires break all the time due to heavy use, but I can understand, why you’d like to be able to use both.
A decent pair can charge enough for hours in minutes. When they about to die, pop one out and into the case, let it charge until the one in your ear is dead or dying, swap them out, 10 minutes and you’re back to stereo for a few hours.
I can get 2-3 days of use out of my wireless before they absolutely need to be charged. They’re not the best sound quality out there, but they have the features I need for my situation.
Last time I tried to use wired headphones for work, the connection snapped off in the port. I’m definitely good to stay away from wired headphones for everything other than my computer.
I’m not super versed on monitors outside of stage performances, and I didn’t do acquisitions. Don’t most people who use IEM’s for standard audio use a nice driver or prefer a device with a good audio out and lossless format compatibility? I guess I kinda assumed if you cared enough to distinguish using monitors instead of earbuds you care about other factors too.
IEM is easier to type than "in-ear headphones" and has become the defacto generic term for them, just like "monitor" has become to mean any stand mount/bookshelf speaker.
Anyway, over the past few years the market has flooded with cheap and very good "IEM-s" by manufacturers like Moondrop, Truthear and others. 30€ can get you a pair that follows Harman curve quite closely and has low enough distortion to allow EQ. Generally they use 10mm dynamic drivers instead of balanced armatures, but they also have more expensive multi-way BA and DD/BA options.
In short, high quality IEM style headphones have become a commodity and you don't need to be an audiophile or muso who's willing to pay hundreds for Shure SE535-s.

Not so true. I use a set of “wireless” where the two ears are connected around the back of my neck. (A pair of beatx). These have 12hr battery and I listen a lot. I only kill the batteries on long ski days (the cold probably bring the battery life down a bit).
All my complaints at this point are lack of options in this mostly perfect form factor.
(Better fit in my ears, better sound, etc). This isn’t a wired/wireless problem.
Are these detachable wires? Because I used to kill headphones all the time tripping over their wires but since I started getting ones with the 3.5 mm jack on the headphone side that hasn’t happened since.
I recently switched to wireless over-the-ear headphones and overall happy. However, when it comes to earbuds - they would only be wired. Unlike my large headphones, which can be unscrewed for that, most earbuds would have trouble wen replacing the battery. And - maybe more importantly - easier to lose since they’re separate and so small.

I very often forget to charge my wireless when I need it and when it’s dead, all I have to do is pull my wired out since my phone has the headphone jack. And when I work, I use my wired to listen to music, because in that situation, wired is simply superior. So I will always buy a phone with a headphone jack because I don’t want a perfectly workable, harmless feature that I need to be taken away from me.

If you are fortunate to have great employment (100k+, dual income preferred (so breaking 200+), depending on location), with good healthcare, your options are great, and you’ll access a higher level of service than most of the world can get. Great schools, great doctors, great home/car/vacations.
If you don’t have that raw income, and therefore don’t have that support, america is a much much different place.
I’m fortunate enough to have gone from very low class to a much higher strata and I never get comfortable. I’m constantly surprised by shit that just happens…easily.
An example: by having good insurance, I have a very good dermatologist. I have psoriasis and use a biologic injectable to handle it completely. Once, my specialty pharmacy had some sort of shipping issue and I called my doc to check in. They said come by.
They handed me 6 doses FOR FREE, so 6 months of medication, like it was nothing. Each dose is thousands of dollars cash. I pay 25$ with my insurance. I assume a vendor rep dropped a ton off.
Point being, I know there are millions of folks on very expensive meds, who don’t have a high quality doctor relationship, who could never access that perk I did. Literally paywalled customer service.

The long term solution is to improve infrastructure and zoning laws to reduce the car centrism of the majority of the USA, this is already being done in many cities, but for the time being most Americans need a car.

If you are using torrentio, you are downloading via torrent on your home network. Depending on what country you are in, it’s not safe to do that without a VPN. If you are trying to watch on a TV via Fire stick or Chromecast, setting up a VPN is not easy.

Newer codecs are more efficient. H.265 and AV1 are often 2/3 to 1/2 the size of an H.264 file for the same quality.
Of course there are also people uploading lower quality files as well.
It completely depends on the specific video file. HEVC and AV1 are more efficient in general, but most of their benefits become apparent with 4K video, which they were specifically designed to be better at handling than AVC. It also depends on your phone’s software and hardware, as it might not be fast enough to encode in real-time with higher compression settings (and you don’t get to use things like 2-pass encoding which can drastically lower bitrate without sacrificing visual quality).
I assume you mean H.265 recorded on your phone? That is live encoded in a single pass. It doesn’t compress as much in that scenario. When you give a system more time that the real time playback of the video it can encoded things more efficiently.
I really didn’t get it! When I got my GH5 I was pumped to do 10bit 422 h.265. Really wanted to see the latitude we could get at that compression. Premiere and FCPX in particular for like 5 years went “lol no.”

Yeah, I can related to that 😔. I work in a TV station in a country that had the PAL standard, and… well, every fucking shot is interlaced 🤦. Not only that, but the output from the station is as well 🤦. Why? Backwards compatibility… what in the actual fuck 🤦… it’s a stream, the decoder doesn’t care about that, it can decode any frame rate, any frame type, it’s all digital now 🤦. Tried explaining this, nope, we’re still doing interlaced.
And, of course, after the cable companies have their way with the signal, the output is shit… not to mention they also archive the material as interlaced 🤦… and then people from outside the station complain about the matrial being garbidge… they still don’t budge.

Actually, it doesn’t take 3 seconds (well, 3 seconds for the stream output, yeah), there are workstations that need to be adjusted as well, but in a course if a day or 2, yeah, you can change the whole thing 👍. You could do the cameras last, that’s not such a big problem, they can shoot interlaced for a few days, edit it that way, export it non-interlaced.
Nothing, the licenses are for content providers and equipment manufacturers, obviously in the end you pay the license when purchasing the goods but the amount is small.
They have licensed countless other codecs and tons of cameras adopted it before they supported it. These aren’t some FOSS hobbyist projects. These are professional NLE’s for Hollywood level work. There’s no excuse if you ask me. Hell Resolve had it like 2-3 years prior I believe.
The problem is the way we are told to treat adults as kids.

It’s not quite the same but this line of thinking reminds me of a couple of scenes from How I Met Your Mother. Marshall tells the story of when they were travelling as a family when he was a child and his dad was this beacon of heroics who could magically see through the heavy fog. Later we get the story from his dad’s perspective who tells that he couldn’t see a thing, was terrified out of his wits but just kept on going and hoped for the best while keeping a brave face for his family. I know it’s fiction but it’s such a good little story that pulls back that curtain.
Even then I wouldn’t do it. Installing games takes a while too, so it’s not much of a time-saver compared to automatically organizing movies/shows.
And the risk of getting a misleadingly named game with malware is too high. Remembering to sandbox isn’t easy either, after possessing them for a while. Untrusted files should never be on a computer, imo. But I don’t pirate games, so take my advice for what it is.

Not an expert, but I do have some insights on this. The reason that spelunking doesn’t usually allow fires, even at the entrance, is because the smoke can damage the cave environment. Smoke, especially from things manufactured in a different environment, can contain a lot of wild stuff that interferes wjth an ecosystem. Caves, especially ones big enough for tours, have incredibly unique ecosystems that are ripe for study by biologists.
Additionally, smoke contains unique particles that settle on surfaces. We can study the materials deep in some caves like Mammoth Cave and find evidence of smoke and ash. This is strong evidence for archeologists that ancient people were able to travel deep into this cave.
tl;dr: smoke damages ecosystems and makes archeology difficult. Don’t smoke in a cave.
It isn’t just the smoke though, it’s the heat, as I was explaining here when I got this reply. As an on-site out-observer, that much from all of this I do understand (which formed the basis for what I don’t).
It’s a matter of statistics. We know that it can cause a collapse, but depending on the cave it’s not often. We don’t want people to get hurt, so we’re going to warn people against generating heat like that. But with a ton of caves, it would have happened irregularly enough for people to be mostly fine.

A Kobo e-reader. I now read much more than before because of the convenience, and I also became a book pirate. It has paid itself multiple times on the money I’ve saved in physical books.
Tested it again just now. It says “uploaded image is too large”. Tried it again with a picture that was one pixel by one pixel. Still I get the same warning.
It’s been like this for a month (due to Lemmy disabling the feature to combat people posting risque material). They did this by reducing the maximum image size to zero.
The picture I tested it with was 49kb. I just tested it again to make sure, it still doesn’t work.
I know it plays a role though, and it kinda sucks too, Lemmy told me specifically to sign up for this instance because when I was making this account, the other instances were becoming overbooked with people trying to sign up and it was causing too much server stress. And it’s not like I can just transfer everything to a new account.

Have a very old book (with light!) Got it mainly because it handles epub, but getting books from my server to it is a pain. Can kobo connect to my calibre server and grab books automatically? Or does it need plugging in to sync up?
I have a kobo as well and I I did a lot of research before selecting it. Imho it’s the best on the market for my personal needs and that definitely changed how often I use it vs an alternative. Some of the things I like about it are direct integration with the library and the ability to do audiobooks. I also like that it is only an ereader and I can’t play games or surf the web on it. I think knowing what’s gonna help you as an individual is the most important thing. If you’re more likely to take a fully fledged tablet with you somewhere because of the versatility, and would otherwise leave a plain ereader at home, then a tablet is better because if you decide to read at least you have it with you. Like a lot of tech, I think it really depends on the user.
For me it’s the ability to read outside in bright days, so I can take care of kids in the beach/pool.
I went for a boox since it’s an Android and can run not only my favorite e reader app but also dictionary, browser for Wikipedia, and any apps for Android such as news Guardian, DW etc.
Obviously it also runs official apps such as Kobo, kindle etc, so I can try/ buy the book wherever and later I de DRM it and upload epub.
