Any password length (within reason) and any character should be allowed. It’s going to be hashed and only the hash will be stored right? Length and character limits make me suspect it’s being stored in plain text.

cmnybo ,

By any length I meant no maximum length. Obviously you don’t want to use a super short password.

cmnybo ,

If that’s the case, it’s probably not even a 5A cable. It will be the cheapest cable China can produce.

cmnybo ,

It’s very uncommon for them to last 100 years, but they do last a lot longer than any lithium or lead acid batteries. The charging efficiency is rather low, which is probably why you don’t see them used much.

Looking to have a common disk for my Linux / Windows dual boot pc. with BTRFS the way to go?

I’m running EndeavourOS and Windows 11. Each OS is on a separate disk, but I have a data disk that is currently NTFS that mount in both OSes. NTFS causes problems for some things in Linux, and I’m worried it’ll bork the drive for windows eventually, so I’m keen to find an alternative. I’ve read about the WinBTRFS...

cmnybo ,

I would use exFAT for a shared data drive. Just don’t use it for programs since it lacks unix file permission support.

cmnybo ,

I’m surprised more people aren’t using uBlock Origin. It’s an absolute necessity for browsing the web anymore.

cmnybo ,

Firefox on android supports addons, so you can install uBlock on it too. If you use an apple device, you are limited to DNS based ad blocking, which doesn’t help with youtube.

cmnybo ,

It’s not a WiFi model, a custom module was hidden inside the calculator to provide the WiFi connection.

cmnybo ,

That’s a terrible name for a remote desktop application.

YouTube will shove ads in your face even when you pause videos (www.pcworld.com)

The Verge reports that YouTube is rolling out advertisements that show up when you pause videos, continuing experiments that the company started a year ago. A YouTube representative confirmed that the practice will now become commonplace “as we’ve seen both strong advertiser and strong viewer response.”...

cmnybo ,

Might as well just download the video with yt-dlp then.

Because of something I did during an anthropology lecture, I learned the hard way to read the "The following packages will be REMOVED" list when upgrading a package to backports in Debian GNU + Linux.

I upgraded pipewire from stable to backports (I want to know if this is related to my problem why essential packages were removed)...

cmnybo ,

That’s why it’s a good idea to take a btrfs snapshot before updating or changing things. Snapshots are almost instant and sure save a lot of work if you break something.

The cylindrical lithium cells can go off like a rocket, but the pouch cells in a phone just burn and are very difficult to extinguish.

Apart from the Galaxy Note 7 which had a design flaw in the battery, it’s incredibly rare for a phone battery to catch fire without physical damage though.

cmnybo ,

Just buy a small, industrial CT scanner and scan your device. Compare the results to a device that you know hasn’t been tampered with.

cmnybo ,

You don’t even need a hacked camera to edit the metadata, you just need exiftool.

cmnybo ,

Cameras don’t cryptographically sign the images they take. Even if that was added, there are billions of cameras in use that don’t support signing the images. Also, any sort of editing, resizing, or reencoding would make that signature invalid. Almost no one is going to post pictures to the web without any sort of editing. Embedding 10+ MB images in a web page is not practical.

cmnybo ,

Firefox plus uBlock Origin is what you can do about it. I hardly ever see any ads. SponsorBlock is great if you watch youtube too.

cmnybo ,

You don’t need root access to steal all of the data that your user account has access to.

cmnybo ,

If you want rechargeable batteries, just put some eneloop batteries (or some of the cheaper, rebranded ones) in the remote. They are not like the old NiMH batteries, they hold a charge for a years.

I certainly don’t want a remote that I have to throw out in a few years because the non-replaceable lithium battery wore out.

cmnybo ,

The music can be copied to new hard drives without any loss in quality, so why are they leaving their only copy on 30 year old hard drives?

cmnybo ,

If you are just self hosting for your own use, just stick with letsencrypt or self signed certificates.

The paid certificates are for businesses where the users need to trust the certificate. They usually come with warranties and identity verification, which is important if you are accepting payments through your website, but it’s just a waste of money for personal use.

cmnybo ,

Sure, you can still own digital media, but you can’t sell or trade it like you can with a physical copy.

cmnybo ,

If they use a good, 12X bluray drive, it will be quicker to install from a disk than to download it unless you’re lucky enough to have a good fiber internet connection. Even then, the servers you download from will often be overloaded and slow on release day.

cmnybo ,

My GOG games run great on wine, it just takes a bit more work to install them. Wine has better support for early windows games than windows does now.

cmnybo ,

BSD works great on my firewall, but I’m certainly not going to run it on my desktop. The hardware and software support just isn’t there yet.

cmnybo ,

Used cars are going to get much more valuable with all the enshitified crap they keep putting in new cars.

cmnybo ,

The easiest way to get lossless music is to buy a CD and rip it. Of course you can always sail the high seas too. 🏴‍☠️

cmnybo ,

It’s impossible to get gigabit speeds on ULF. The datasheet says it uses 5.925 GHz to 7.125 GHz.

cmnybo ,

It’s emmitting radio signals that an enemy could use to help locate the ship.

Bots are running rampant. How do we stop them from ruining Lemmy?

Social media platforms like Twitter and Reddit are increasingly infested with bots and fake accounts, leading to significant manipulation of public discourse. These bots don’t just annoy users—they skew visibility through vote manipulation. Fake accounts and automated scripts systematically downvote posts opposing certain...

cmnybo ,

That sounds like a good way to get rid of most of the users too.

cmnybo ,

I’m surprised they didn’t put a time limit on the storage since they are not a file hosting platform.

Canva says its AI features are worth the 300 percent price increase (www.theverge.com)

The price of some Canva subscriptions are set to skyrocket next year following the company’s aggressive rollout of generative AI features. Global customers for Canva Teams — a business-orientated subscription that supports adding multiple users — can expect prices to increase by just over 300 percent in some instances....

cmnybo ,

They are probably failing to get enough users, so they will attempt to squeeze as much money from their existing users as they can before they go under.

cmnybo ,

For the price they charge, they should be made so that opening the case will destroy the contents. They could have at least potted them.

cmnybo ,

Encasing the circuit board in epoxy. It makes it very difficult to access components without destroying it. It’s also great for water proofing and increasing the mechanical robustness.

cmnybo ,

There is potting compound with high thermal conductivity for things that produce a lot of heat. A YubiKey hardly uses any power, so heat should not be an issue.

The main downsides of potting are that it makes repair practically impossible and it can add a lot of weight if there is a large volume to be filled.

Recent versions of Android make it much more difficult for a background app to access the microphone. There will be a notification if any background app is using the mic or camera.

cmnybo ,

They can shut down the ground stations in Brazil, but they can’t block the laser links. They could also try to jam the signals, but SpaceX now has years of experience working around jamming in a war zone.

cmnybo ,

Sure it can, you just uninstall the entire OS and replace it with Linux.

cmnybo ,

The windows uninstaller is in the Linux ISO.

cmnybo ,

The SD card probably crapped out because someone didn’t know how to make it read only.

cmnybo ,

What’s even worse is that Apple is not fully erasing the phones that they refurbish.

cmnybo ,

The thing that I wish would go away is oversized graphics cards that take up 3 or more slots. There needs to be more options for liquid cooling that doesn’t require modifying the card.

cmnybo ,

Most graphics cards have massive air coolers that block other PCIe slots. I want more water cooled options since they are low profile. I just don’t want to have to void the warranty on a brand new card to install a water block.

cmnybo ,

Modern games are not going to run well. Look for a Thinkpad with a Thunderbolt 3 port (make sure it actually has 4 PCIe lanes, some only have 2) and use an eGPU. Retro games will run fine on integrated graphics though.

cmnybo ,

Yes and there is also OneWeb and eventually Kuiper.

cmnybo ,

Considering that RAM is shared with the GPU, it’s still not enough.

cmnybo ,

It does make some things better, but there are a number of downsides too. The biggest downside is that it’s not practical to make the memory socketed because of the speed that’s required.

cmnybo ,

It doesn’t even matter if it’s a trusted seller. Amazon puts their returned items back with the new products and they stock the items from every seller together. You can have 10 sellers with a genuine item and 1 with a counterfeit item and have a chance of getting the counterfeit item from any of them because they all share the same stock.
