The catch is its time consuming since it doesn’t support Playlist. There are similar tools that also support up to 100nsong Playlist.

I love voice control specifically for telling the house to warm up before I get out of bed. I don’t even have to grab my phone. I also use it almost daily to have music start playing from spotify.

There mission must be copying Google killing perfectly good products.

If you really want to quit, I used Chantix and it took away the wanting a smoke really well, finally was able to stop completely. Still can’t breath for shit 4 years later :(

I did have the lucid dreams, which as a person who never remembers dreams, was very unsettling. But no other side effects.

netburnr ,
@netburnr@lemmy.world avatar

So you can’t. There are cert stores, new protocols and ciphers, and eventually u patched zero days.

I know this because I’ve been playing with a g3 powerboat and all the browsers at this point are no longer maintained to support the above things as of last year. The last person working on it gave up

@netburnr@lemmy.world avatar

Exposing your internal devices to the internet is not suggested unless you know how to secure it behind a reverse proxy.

Most people want the question free returns, that’s really the thing keeping amazon afloat compared to say eBay or aliexpress. Sure you can get the stuff directly from China in most cases, but you have to wait for a month for it to arrive and hope you don’t need to return it.

As for local stores, they always cost more because of the cost of doing business, which is why Amazon is cheaper and faster to deliver.

All that said, as long as you can wait a few days, there is no need to pay for Prime, you can still get all the stuff shipped for free if you just wait until you have 45 bucks of stuff to buy.

netburnr ,
@netburnr@lemmy.world avatar

There are some others, bhphoto being a good one, but many of the online retailers do not have free shipping and many also have return fees. That’s where Amazon saw a way to steal customers away.

netburnr ,
@netburnr@lemmy.world avatar

Yup. I tried selling on Amazon and ended up back on ebay because perfectly working stuff was being returned and I had to eat the cost of shipping both ways.

bad battery? (lemmy.world)

I opened my laptop for unrelated reasons and was greeted by a slightly bloated battery. Idk if the picture makes it clear, but the individual segments of the battery have slightly raised above the solid structure pieces in between. Laptop is just over a year old. I have already contacted the manufacturer, but with the holidays...

@netburnr@lemmy.world avatar

I’m going to go against what you just said, even though you might be a firefighter.

Take that battery OUTSIDE AWAY FROM ANY TREES OR YOUR HOME and put it in salt water to kill it completely. The water should have so much salt in it that the salt refuses to stir in and you can see the salt at the bottom after heavy stirring meaning the water cant dilute the salt anymore. .

The salt water bath over the next two days will completely drain the battery to 0 volts at which point it is no longer dangerous.

The salt water method is the only fully safe way to handle that battery.

netburnr ,
@netburnr@lemmy.world avatar

You are welcome to disagree, but putting a lipo in salt water is the only safe way to discharge it. Obviously this should be done outside away from any trees or the home.

netburnr ,
@netburnr@lemmy.world avatar

Done. Won’t matter the downvote brigade already sided with the self proclaimed firefighter.

I learned this from R/C cars many years ago when Lipo came put. It’s a tried and true method that many people in the hobby use to make the battery safe for transport to the recycling facilities.

They do a lot to be transparent and monitor availability.

There is an big usage jump before Xmas, I assume because of the recent lemmy version upgrade that many admins are saying uses more resources.

Give em some time, I’m sure there will be a patch soon.

Best part of the fediverse is you can just use a less popular server until things calm down.

netburnr ,
@netburnr@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t think you understand how a federated system works based on that comment.

netburnr ,
@netburnr@lemmy.world avatar

Federation takes almost no server load. It’d all the people loading images and comment threads that cause the server to slow down. Yes federation can break, especially due to unexpected code changes, but typically using a federated, lower user count site helps over all.

netburnr ,
@netburnr@lemmy.world avatar

0.19.1 has a problem that causes higher than expected server load, as illustrated in my first post showing their utilization graphs.

As for a few months ago, “someone” was DDoSing lemmy.world almost constantly but i guess they ran out of money or got bored.

I would venture a guess it’s people’s phone backups, all those fireworks and concert videos filmed and uploaded to cloud to never be watched again.

Veeam backup and recovery, setup application aware backups.

netburnr ,
@netburnr@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, it’s a struggle with there are a dozen zero days a year for multiple brands/applications. I have at least 4 people always doing some sort of upgrade or patch being reported by infosec.

What's a word you've spent a long time not using right?

Just recently I was in a conversation with a number of UK mainlanders and we had a debate over what “tories” meant, apparently disproportionately ordinarily it refers to a political party and it’s not usual to use it as short for “territories” as I’ve used it (according to how the debate ended, it was half and half...

[For Terrapin to be viable, the connection it interferes with also must be secured by either “ChaCha20-Poly1305” or “CBC with Encrypt-then-MAC,” both of which are cipher modes added to the SSH protocol (in 2013 and 2012, respectively

Have you tried turning off and on again?

netburnr ,
@netburnr@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah the people pushing this agenda don’t seem to grasp that whatever you post goes to threads. They still get your data no matter what. And so does Google and every other web scraping technology.

netburnr ,

A mirror array is not a backup. So therefor I would use at least one of those extra drives for a weekly backup of your data. You want some sort of not real-time backup in case you get cryptoed for example

netburnr ,
@netburnr@lemmy.world avatar

If you’ve got cloud backup you’re good, keep the drives in a drawer as spares or have another use?

netburnr ,

I’m not super happy with the lack of supporting data, just colorful graphs and a lot of emotional anecdotes but there is a clear disparity that I think warrants greater investigation. Very specific media like rare or modified Rips gave an extra copy on an archive folder. All my cloud storage and personal backups also go to the archive folder. That folder then gets backed up to local raid 6 NAS, and then the qnap software syncs that up to backblaze once a week.

what is a skill you wish you had, and why?

Ok, I might as well go first: I wish I could draw. Not at the level where I could make photorealistic portraits, but I’ve always been envious of those who are able to scetch something together in a few minutes that perfectly captures what they want to convey. Sometimes words aren’t enough to express what I want to say, and...

Have you tried reading in bed? It’s not just a few minutes but it definitely helps me make the eyes tired and heavy which makes me know when I can close the book and fall asleep in a matter of minutes.

On the end of Discovery

I have mixed feelings about Disco ending. I really dug the first season’s look at a Federation at war, and following the person who arguably set that war in motion dealing with her culpability. Add to that a ship that is part weird science lab, part haunted house. And yeah, I could live with the Klingon redesign....
