RoquetteQueen , to asklemmy in People born on Leap Day, do you celebrate your birthday on February 28th, February 29th, or March 1st?
@RoquetteQueen@sh.itjust.works avatar

I feel like celebrating on March 1st when it’s not a leap year makes the most sense. If someone was born on February 29, then their birthday is the day after February 28.

Your 80% claim doesn’t account for people who live through a year divisible by 100 but not 400.

Children born today could feasibly turn 18 in 2096, but won’t celebrate their 19th birthday in 2100. They’ll turn 19 in 2104.

yads ,

Think about what your age is on Feb 28 and March 1 on non leap years.

SeabassDan ,

A year, basically, since you were born after the 28th but also before the 1st, so the next year before the first would already be a year again. Mar 1st would be a year and a day, technically.

Notyou ,

If you want to argue for celebrating on the 28th, I would argue that you are actually 1 year older the day before your birthday. That is why you can buy alcohol the day before you turn 21. At least where I live.

Which is fine of course! I’ll just wait 6 months or so, and come back to it then ^_^ If I’d paid money for it I’d have been upset, but as it stands I’m good.

If you make less than $30 in a week, you likely aren’t on lemmy. I won’t go into how much I make, but I probably make less than 99% of people on here. Difference being how I managed my money when I did have it so I set myself up to not have to pay rent, power, etc. Most things I do are pre-paid a year in advance to save money (for example, did you know you can get smartphone service for like $150 for the whole year?)

And THEN I forgot that Enshrouded was coming out this week, so like… I guess I won’t be playing that just yet 😅 did it turn out to be as good as the demo made it seem?

thantik ,

Enshrouded’s voxel terrain and build system is really amazing, tbh. I’m not so sure their storyline or gameplay loop is great just yet. I’ve got a couple of friends that play it, but I couldn’t afford it just yet. I’ll probably pick it up in a couple of days if I can manage to muster up the cash. So far Palworld has taken me off of ARK: Survival Ascended - which I got gifted to me. So I’ve been pretty happy not dealing with Wildcard’s bullshit. Other than that, my other entertainment is pirated switch games.

I think overall Enshrouded might end up holding more of my attention in the long run. Palworld’s max cap is like level 50 and it seems pretty linear of a grind. I expect in 2 weeks or so I’ll be done with it.

Kiosade ,

That sounds like my current trajectory as well. I’m almost level 30, with a friend who runs the server I’m playing on being late 30’s, and is starting to catch things well into the 40’s. I can almost see the endgame coming.

The comments he’s replying to suggest that racism is the answer, but the poster who made this joke has more relevant information than those who assume racism immediately: OP is white as fuck. Since OP is white as fuck, and the comments were suggesting that due to racism those horrid whites just want to “other” the “other white guy” by pointing out that his “skin color is different,” but seeing as they’re both white, the “skin color difference” is implied to come from going outside and getting a tan. And thus the crux of the joke, Newfoundland gets less sun so the people there are more pale than say, white people in Miami.

    @linearchaos@lemmy.world avatar

They’re definitely grabbing analytics and statistics. But so is AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Apple, Amazon, Samsung, Google, Microsoft.

If the Chinese government asked any of those other companies to give them all the data they have on you in particular, They probably tell them to get bent.

But if the US government told them to do it, they would comply and then have a gag order slapped against them to keep them from telling you it happened.

Huawei is beholden to the Chinese government. So it works kind of in the opposite way.

Haha what? You think there’s any chance in hell that China doesn’t get what they want from any US company? Check out this video, this is what happens when a random American says something China doesn’t like. John Cena is not a random American. You and I are closer to random than John Cena, a man who is internationally famous and a professional actor. That’s like saying Tom Cruise is a random American, when you know exactly who I’m talking about without googling.

That said, yes, China censors American media and actors, and it’s horrid. The fact that films get made in America and edited for China and America, is a crime to any artful visions the writers, actors, directors, editors and more may have had. But China itself doesn’t have the time and energy to stop you or I online all the time, it barely can do it within the Great Firewall, due to the sheer scope of the population and area the country covers.

In a comment you mentioned you're the team lead. Maybe you already are, but just in case: stop thinking about it in terms of the individual personal relationship and start thinking about it in terms of the team dynamic. It's unlikely this only affects you, so even if their individual work performance is fine, does their behavior affect other people's performance or happiness at work? If it's affecting others negatively it's your responsibility to protect them and their work output, even if that means finding a new team for this person or documenting a path to letting them go altogether.

I don't envy you. Good luck.

ElectroVagrant , to nostupidquestions in How do you get the dry boogers out if you don’t pick your nose?

Get a mirror that doubles as a sort of magnifier to view the area around your nose closely & carefully. You’re looking for seams around the nose with which to gain leverage to gently pry off the nose to get better access to the nostrils within & beneath. Once the nose has been popped off your face, you can rinse both it and the exposed nostrils out with some warm water, which should get rid of the dry, compacted mucus.

You may want to take a soft, thin brush while you’re at this for a more thorough clean. Once both the removed nose and exposed nostrils are cleared to your satisfaction, realign your nose with the seams you found at the start and gently squeeze & press your nose to reconnect it with your face. A light splash of warm water and scrub should help reseal the nose to your face and make the seams less noticeable.

    Hope this helps!

The funny thing is I wouldn’t mind watching their ads if they weren’t annoying with them. If the ads were only at the start of a video, not during, and no still image banner at the bottom I have to click X on on desktop. I don’t want to actively dismiss anything while I’m watching the video, I want to relax and watch it.

They don’t allow me to sit and enjoy the videos without babysitting them to skip after the timer, so that’s why I block their ads with absolutely no compromise anymore.

    atetulo ,

    Lucidlethargy ,

It’s more than that. Would you devote 1-5% of your PC resources to others while you watch a video, if you could watch a video without ads? Yes. I bet so.

We are able to easily shoulder the burdens of hosting, yet Google wants to dominate us and force us to use their hosting at the psychological cost of being their sponge for anyone’s paid information campaign. YouTube in 2016 was non-stop Trump ads. Non fucking stop.

    FUCK Google.

    atetulo ,

I totally agree. We need more peer-supported services.

    Auli ,

No no we are not. How are we going to distribute all the videos. I don’t think you realize how much storage youtube takes up.

    elrik ,

Storage is probably the easier aspect to address. Storage is cheap and decentralized storage systems have existed for decades.

The problem is bandwidth and latency. Most residential ISPs do not offer high bandwidth and low latency upstream connections, which means there’s no good way to serve the content you’re storing.

Residential fiber is becoming more common in some areas, but often those residential plans still limit upstream or specifically have terms in their acceptable use policy that forbid such activities. Here’s an example from my fiber provider, which couldn’t be clearer:

You may not use the Services to host any type of server.

It’s a little silly of course, because if you were playing a game and hosting, you’re probably hosting a server! But if I were serving videos to thousands of peers, I’m sure they would notice and take issue.

    Auli ,

Huh that doesn’t make anysense? Youtube is profitable because of ads. It’s not like it has a secrete revenue source and the ads are just gravy on top.

    atetulo ,

    Huh that doesn’t make anysense?

I mean, if you use your brain it makes perfect sense.

I don’t watch ads. Youtube is profitable. I shouldn’t have to watch ads on an already-profitable product.
