The simplest way, if you want high quality:

  1. Get a VPN (preferably one with port forwarding, like AirVPN)
  2. Get qBittorrent and set the listening port to that forwarded port from your VPN host
  3. Use the built-in search in qBit to find the stuff you want to watch
  4. Open it in VLC

I got a little server from them a few weeks ago for $17/yr ($1.42/mo) and it’s great. 1 core, 2 GB RAM, 35 GB storage.

I used rclone to mount a Backblaze bucket and transferred a couple services to it, including Immich.

Transgender swimmer Lia Thomas out of Olympics after losing legal battle (www.theguardian.com)

The US swimmer Lia Thomas, who rose to global prominence after becoming the first transgender athlete to win a NCAA college title in March 2022, has lost a legal case against World Aquatics at the court of arbitration for sport – and with it any hopes of making next month’s Paris Olympics....

A 150 lb male will almost always out-perform a 150 lb female. The genetic differences are still vast even in the same weight category.

jws_shadotak ,

It’s not a genetic difference, for one, it’s a hormonal one.

What influences hormones?

Best way to backup files

I have about 500GB of data (photos, documents, videos etc.) that I have accumulated over the years. Currently, I keep them on my computer and rsync all additions / changes once a month or so to an external hard drive. Do I need to be worried about data loss (sectors going bad, bit rot, bit flip, whatever it is called)?...

jws_shadotak ,

The 3 2 1 rule is always the gold standard.

I’d recommend at least adding an offsite backup. Set up rclone with a mounted folder (client side encryption is recommended) and sync the files to that as well.

I use Backblaze for about $6/TB/mo, pro-rated for whatever amount is actually used.

jws_shadotak ,

I absolutely despise the idea of “hidden” files. I don’t understand the purpose of not showing them.

I love this app.

jws_shadotak ,

I think Immich has grown out of the most difficult upgrades now. Most changes now are just removing lines from the stack.

a good starter distro but ideally you should make your own from scratch so you know what’s in it

What would be the consequences of a smallsword wound to the belly?

I’m 20, I practice fencing. My height is 192 cm, I usually fence against shorter opponents. They often manage to drive their smallsword into my belly. That’s why I’m curious: what would it be like to get wounded into the belly by a real smallsword? How lethal would it be? How painful? How would I react?

Beyond initial bleeding - extensive gastrointestinal issues, depending on where it hits. If it lacerates part of the intestine, it may leak feces into the abdominal cavity. It would require flushing and antibiotics to prevent going into sepsis from massive infection.

If it does enough damage, you could be looking at removing a portion of the intestines and possibly requiring a colostomy bag.

Abdominal wounds are no joke. The liver bleeds profusely if lacerated or punctured. All of the blood flow to the abdomen exits through the liver into the inferior vena cava.

An AI-controlled fighter jet took the Air Force leader for a historic ride (apnews.com)

With the midday sun blazing, an experimental orange and white F-16 fighter jet launched with a familiar roar that is a hallmark of U.S. airpower. But the aerial combat that followed was unlike any other: This F-16 was controlled by artificial intelligence, not a human pilot. And riding in the front seat was Air Force Secretary...

jws_shadotak ,

Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall told senators on Tuesday at a hearing on the service’s 2025 budget that he will enter the cockpit of one of the F-16s that the service has converted for drone flight to see for himself how the AI-controlled plane performs in the air.

“There will be a pilot with me who will just be watching, as I will be, as the autonomous technology works,” Kendall told the Senate Appropriations Committee defense panel members. “Hopefully neither he or I will be needed to fly the airplane.”

Doesn’t this defeat the purpose of the drone? I thought the big advantage for AI/drone fighter jets was that it isn’t limited by the humans inside (in regards to G forces and life supporting systems, not in regards to targets)

jws_shadotak ,

Ah yeah I guess that makes sense

I highly recommend using Docker/Podman, even though you say you don’t want to. It is trivial to start up a new service using docker-compose once you get the basics down.

host:container when specifying ports or directories in the compose YAML (e.g. 58333:8080 will route the container’s port 8080 to the host machine’s port 58333.

+1 for Overseerr/Jellyseerr

I have a website set up with dynamic DNS and Nginx to resolve request.mywebsite.com to Overseerr and it uses Plex to authenticate users who I’ve shared my library with. I’m not sure how Jellyseerr authenticates users though.

My friends and family that use my server regularly add stuff to my Plex server via Overseerr.

jws_shadotak ,

Yes, it’s my IP. I know I’ll probably get shamed on here for that lol.

Dynamic DNS updater keeps the subdomain request.mywebsite.com pointed to my IP. Nginx resolves that subdomain to the Overseerr host:port with SSL cert and everything.

I’m eventually going to set up a VPS but I just… haven’t.

Why is replacement for home device controls so complicated?

I recently learned about Home Assistant here on Lemmy. It looks like a replacement for Google Home, etc. However, it requires an entire hardware installation. Proprietary products just use a simple app to manage and control devices, so can someone explain why a pretty robust dedicated device is necessary as a replacement? The...

jws_shadotak ,

Home Assistant can be installed as a Docker container instead of going with the whole dedicated machine route.

Edit: original title was “USS Eisenhower flees Red Sea” or something like that

Dumbfuck OP doesn’t understand ship rotations.

The Ike was set to leave the red sea to return home. Even while in the Mediterranean, its aircraft can still conduct missions in the Red Sea.

Regular ship rotation

No. MeTube only loads correctly after clearing the cookies and forcing me to re-login to Authentik. Even if I manually log out and try MeTube again, it doesn’t work. Only clearing cookies fixes it temporarily.

The other apps authenticate and load correctly every time.

Composerize - online tool converts docker commands to compose yml (www.composerize.com)

I had an issue recently with getting FileBrowser to run and while researching that, I found this tool which creates a docker-compose.yml file from a docker run command. It worked well for me, so I am passing it along to you all. I hope someone else finds this helpful....

It’s not just that companies like to ignore it, it’s also that they have incentive to make shitty UI if it means they’ll make more money off it (e.g. intentionally showing things in searches that people weren’t looking for in the hopes that they might click/engage/purchase)

jws_shadotak ,

Venture capitalism?

jws_shadotak ,

Aside from the technical explanation that others have given, here’s how I use Docker:

MeTube to rip videos and stuff easily. Just plug in a link and most times it’ll work. Here’s a list of all the supported sites.

I use Sonarr/Radarr and qBittorrent with gluetun to search for and download TV and movies that I watch on Plex.

I host my own Immich server that will automatically back up my photos from my phone just like Google Photos, except I own it all and it’s all kept private. It has its own machine learning and facial recognition, so I can search for “dog” and get all the pictures of my dogs, or I can search by person.

I use Docker for all this because the images come in little prepackaged containers. It’s super easy to get into once you figure out some of the basics.

Another great benefit of these containers is that you can transfer it to another system if needed. Just copy the config and data over to the new system and point the container in the right direction and it’ll pick up where it left off.

jws_shadotak OP ,

I added a pastebin of the compose file

I tried adding depends_on to the qBit, but I got the same result. I think it’s already dependent on gluetun for the network_mode

jws_shadotak OP ,

This happens every time I start them together, though. This is just a temporary fix

jws_shadotak OP ,

I don’t see support for it in the Linuxserver documents

jws_shadotak OP ,

I added this to my qBit section:

    depends_on:
      gluetun:
        condition: service_healthy
        restart: true

It caused an error with gluetun somehow

jws_shadotak OP ,

Torrents are stalling and it’s only seeding about 600 KB/s. The icon at the bottom shows a little flame and the hover text says “firewalled”.

Restarting qBit through the Dockge web terminal turns that flame icon into a globe and it starts finding hundreds of DHT networks. Uploads nearly max out my upload bandwidth.

jws_shadotak OP ,

qBit starts second but Gluetun isn’t finished and doesn’t open the port for another few seconds, causing this problem
