If they can’t get the headset to fit the size and weight of swimming goggles, I don’t think it can get mass adoption

TORFdot0 ,

CSS was designed by someone truly deranged. I hate front end so much

TORFdot0 ,

I don’t hate you Bobby

At first glance the rules seem to make sense and be straightforward until you start dabbling into screen size responsiveness and display and layout rules and then you get into questions like “what the hell is flex box and how is it different from flex. Why is this element randomly wrapping, selector specificity is joke and everything’s made up and the rules don’t matter.

TORFdot0 ,

It’s definitely the smaller viewports that give the most trouble, and as I am a stubborn mini phone user, I make sure that my projects are responsive to smaller screen sizes.

The other part is that I’m not a front end dev, so these are just my personal projects and I don’t know all the hacks to really optimize layouts on smaller screen sizes.

The half-price laptops have 1/4th the battery life of an m1 which is the other reason OP likes it

TORFdot0 ,

Apple TV is the only set top box that doesn’t show you ads and sell your watch data up and down a river. The battery life on Apple silicon laptops are unmatched and it’s a better OS than windows by far and the big desktop environment packages on Linux don’t match it either (It also doesn’t feel right not just using terminal/bash on Linux for me either, GUIs are overrated)

Lastly I feel better about my data privacy using the full Apple ecosystem compared to using Google’s full ecosystem. (But will admit using an open source rom focused on privacy and disconnect from any cloud service would be the most effective, I do want some level of convenience )

Microsoft in damage-control mode, says it will prioritize security over AI (arstechnica.com)

Microsoft is pivoting its company culture to make security a top priority, President Brad Smith testified to Congress on Thursday, promising that security will be “more important even than the company’s work on artificial intelligence.”...

I mean you can provide audit findings and results and it’s a pretty big part of vendor management and due diligence but at some point you have to accept risk in using open source software that can be susceptible to supply chain hacks, might be poorly maintained, etc or accept the risk of taking the closed source company’s documentation at face value (and that can also be poorly maintained and susceptible to supply chain attacks)

There’s got to be some level of risk tolerance to do business and open source doesn’t actually reduce risk. But it can at least reduce enshittification

TORFdot0 ,

The hype was for its star studded cast. The movie itself was also a chuckle but was really obvious for its critique and satire.

TORFdot0 ,

They all have ways to send screenshots to the mobile apps if I’m not mistaken and with Twitter jacking up API prices since Elon took over, it makes perfect sense just to discontinue support

An open source algorithm that the user base can see and understand how it works is different than a closed source algorithm that serves to benefit advertisers more than users

Dude, consider getting therapy. You need to learn to love yourself first

TORFdot0 ,

Discord has an absolute massive user base that they are going to cater too before considering edge cases.

In theory inconveniencing the edge cases by making them work through the support process is worth it to stop account takeover and further spam and fraud.

Sucks when the support process takes too long but I’d limit your account every time too.

TORFdot0 ,

NO, I’m also not from this instance for similar reasons

TORFdot0 ,

I just set up new PC for my grandparents that I imaged myself using the latest windows 11 iso from MS. It wouldn’t let me bypass the account require when I was offline. It just stalled at the “no network” screen and wouldn’t continue unless I connected the PC to a network.

I had to use the OOBE/BYPASSNRO or whatever the command was

TORFdot0 ,

If you self-host all the same services you have the same exposure level if root on your hosting machine is compromised. I suppose it depends on how confident you feel in how agile you can patch if a vulnerability becomes known in postfix for example. I wouldn’t consider self hosting something that reduces your cybersecurity risk typically

Linus Tech Tips (LTT) release investigation results on former accusations (x.com)

There were a series of accusations about our company last August from a former employee. Immediately following these accusations, LMG hired Roper Greyell - a large Vancouver-based law firm specializing in labor and employment law, to conduct a third-party investigation. Their website describes them as “one of the largest...

TORFdot0 ,

Who would be paying for an investigation if not LMG? Firms don’t hire auditors/investigators to give them a rosy report. They want the truth so they can adjust their processes so they don’t spend more money on regulatory actions/fines.

If the report is bad they just don’t release it to the public. But a third party audit lying to a firm to make them look good does not provide value. The company isn’t biased just because they are being paid by LMG, that’s just not how it works. LMG could just say they investigated themselves and found no wrong doing if that was their objective.

Saying that you don’t believe the report because the company investigating it was paid for by PMG shows that you are biased more than they are.

Edit: we have too many visions from the late 70s/early 80s

Has no one really done an RTA 70 star ABC before now?

I love the concept of this challenge, good on this lad for doing this, I thought most strats were TAS only.

Paying with credentials that can’t easily be spoofed means a meteoric amount of money saved for payment processors from fraud due to insecure payment methods

Depending on the implementation it can be unreliable. More modern methods use 3D scans which can’t be fooled by a photo.

Do we need to create increasingly more children for a stable economy?

So in the whole anti-natalism/pro-natalism conversation (which I’m mostly agnostic/undecided on, currently), my friend who is a pro-natalist, argued that the success/stability of our world economy is dependent on procreating more children each year than the previous year, so that we not only replace the numbers of the people...

TORFdot0 ,

We don’t need infinite population growth to support the economy but eventually we are going to hit a point where we have to support more retired people than workers. At that point the economy will slow down as there is less demand because people will lose their jobs because of the less demand. People will also be spending more of their time and incomes taking care of their older relatives.

Our current Ponzi scheme, robbing Peter to pay Paul, method of funding social security will break down at that point and we will have to decide whether we send mom and dad and grandpa and grandma to the poor house, increase taxes on the workers who still have their jobs, or redistribute wealth from the 1%.

People won’t vote for the first 2, so we might actually get socialism at that point but it will hurt a lot on the way there.

TORFdot0 ,

Facebook is 100% shitposts. Most of my friends on it have aged out of posting every little thing and so it’s mostly shitposts and soft core porn disguised as short form videos on the Facebook feed and not any of my friends that I actually wanted to follow when I made my account in the 00s.

I really want to delete my account but I still have to use it to organize class reunions and alumni events for my old high school. I’m going to try to float the idea that we move to a mailing list instead. I’d rather buy a domain and maintain a website for that than continue using Facebook for free

TORFdot0 ,

As an unpopular opinion on the other end, it’s ok to stop participating in pop culture. Pop music, Blockbuster movies, and TV are all meant to sell consumerism to young people with disposable incomes. Not to people who are bogged down by kids and mortgages.

New media isn’t made for your tastes, so unless you make an effort to change your tastes to those of the current generation of young people, new media will never be seen as good enough by you

Home gardening is an important element of individual food security. It’s not meant to replace industrial agriculture which maintains food security for the nation as a whole

TORFdot0 ,

I don’t have any love lost for mega corporate farms and agree that we need more family and cooperative owned farms that would be more concerned with sustainability and environmental impact.

Americans are choking on surging fast-food prices. "I can't justify the expense," one customer says (www.cbsnews.com)

Kevin Roberts remembers when he could get a bacon cheeseburger, fries and a drink from Five Guys for $10. But that was years ago. When the Virginia high school teacher recently visited the fast-food chain, the food alone without a beverage cost double that amount....

TORFdot0 ,

The corn subsidies are here for a purpose. To ensure that we maintain a surplus so that we can avoid mass food shortages if a natural disaster such as the dust bowl of the 1930s wipes out several years of harvests. Hemp can’t be used as a food source.

TORFdot0 ,

Corn is used in cereals, tortillas, chips, as a sugar substitute, and as animal feed. The one thing you won’t be eating is canned corn because that’s not the kind of corn that we subsidize.

Corn is actually probably one of the most effective crops we could use in a surplus

TORFdot0 ,

I’m not meaning to disparage the other uses of hemp.

I’m not an expert in the uses of hemp for food but we already have the cultural palate and infrastructure for cornmeal and cornflour products, not so much for hempseed right now. If we had that back in the depression, maybe we would have subsidized hemp instead. Maybe attitudes could change in the future and we could shift to subsidizing hemp in the future. I know of a couple big hemp farms that have popped up near me, it’s possible. But it’s not feasible right now.

Yes but now it will be useless and make stuff up instead of just saying “Something went wrong” or “I don’t understand” to every request

EA wants to place in-game ads in its full-price AAA games, again (www.techspot.com)

EA has tried this before, with predictable results. In 2020, EA Sports UFC 4 included full-screen ads for the Amazon Prime series The Boys that would appear during ‘Replay’ moments. These were absent from the game when it launched, with EA introducing the ads about a month later, thereby preventing them from being...

TORFdot0 ,

You can’t really sell ads on a per impression basis with just product placement. They want the ad sales to be recurring revenue.

TORFdot0 ,

I mean you can send your Mac snip to preview and mark it up that way

Because the rulers under communism are still the political class and not the working man. And instead of being able to uplift yourself via entrepreneurship you have the state controlling every aspect of your life, your career, and your ability to own property

TORFdot0 ,

I’ve never had issues with a return but I’ve had so many problems with items being damaged, having misleading listings, or being sent the wrong item that I refuse to order from Amazon anymore

TORFdot0 ,

The camera is too important for me to give up my smart phone, and I don’t want to carry a separate device just for taking photos/video.

Maybe if the came out with a feature phone that had a camera on par with a smartphone and supported syncing to google photos or immich or synology then I’d consider it.

[Serious] Why do so many people seem to hate veganism?

Seen a lot of posts on Lemmy with vegan-adjacent sentiments but the comments are typically very critical of vegan ideas, even when they don’t come from vegans themselves. Why is this topic in particular so polarising on the internet? Especially since unlike politics for example, it seems like people don’t really get upset by...

TORFdot0 ,

People don’t hate veganism as much as they don’t appreciate being judged for their choices and chastised by other adults for beliefs that they don’t share.

Personally I have no problem respecting the beliefs of people who are vegan due to their personal morals. Until they start disrespecting the beliefs of others who don’t agree with them with regards to meat, then they become annoying.

TORFdot0 ,

Don’t remember when /r/atheism was a default on the other site?

TORFdot0 ,

As an example of internet atheists being as obnoxious as internet vegans, yes that’s my example.

Edit: with regards to the content it was posting back when it was a default, not the fact that it was a default

TORFdot0 ,

You are absolutely free to believe that not all beliefs are good or correct according to your own morals, and plenty of people will agree with you. Similar to going to a middle eastern country and telling them that women should have rights and shouldn’t have to cover up, don’t expect to be well liked for telling people that their beliefs are deficient or immoral.

TORFdot0 ,

I’ve never posted to instagram as a millennial. I think that by the time something that wasn’t Facebook came around we learned that posting photos of ourselves online maybe wasn’t smart

TORFdot0 ,

I remember reruns on Nick at Night into the early 00s. The theme song and Gary Coleman were pretty iconic but different strokes isn’t a millenneal experience
