He lost me when he called Biden the “ethical candidate”. He is the less disgusting choice, but he is in no way an “ethical choice”.

This is comparable to a loud family feud carried out on the streets with yelling and throwing stuff at one another and then yelling at the shocked onlookers to move away.

They don’t need to be exclusive. Power generation should be diverse. Otherwise prices will go through the roof on times without wind (happens in Germany). This can lead to higher energy prices in combination with high energy exports.

True, it wouldn’t be enough, This is why Germany still has a lot of coal-fired power station and natural gas power stations, despite huge investments into renewables, and is also investing a lot into wood-fired power stations (imo a really terrible idea). The nuclear plants could still ease the situation by giving a stable basic load that has some planable variability (wind models are getting also better every year and aren’t that bad as it is). For now renewables cannot really provide a very stable basic load (at least not here, might be different for other areas).

There are great concepts to improve all of this with stuff like pumped-storage hydroelectricity, but those cannot be build everywhere and take up a lot of space. It is going forward and I think nuclear power will come to an end eventually. For now, I think they still have their place (and imo Germany acted irrationally by shutting them all down).

I mean, we’ve been lucky that France completly fucked their energy sector up (hints towards that nuclear plants probably also won’t be the ultimate solution), otherwise we’d have lost a loooot of money and would have had energy prices even worse.

Here an imo interesting read: …substack.com/…/capture-price-of-importsexports-i…

I also liked Paris and I’ve been there twice in summer. People weren’t actively going out of their way to be unfriendly to us, so this was great compared to the rest of france.

Everyone we asked for help did their best to help us, though we have 0 french knowledge. I had very different experiences elsewhere in France (we quickly learned to only speak to arab people outside Paris, if we needed help, worked fine).

We skipped most touristy places and just had a few relaxing days there both times. So that might also be, why we had a pleasant time in Paris.

I could imagine MIT might be interesting for Software released by public institutions, that are meant to be used by the industry in any way they want. Sometimes earning money with your product might even be impossible due to restrictions. So, not really Software released with the FOSS philosophy.

Otherwise I also never really understood why anyone would use the MIT license.

Yeah, maybe under special circumstances that might also make sense.

Then you are pretty much the archetype of what I thought about. :)

With the recent issues of transgender people in sports, why don’t we move some sports over to a weight-class system?

Obviously this won’t work for all sports, but things like football, track, soccer, it would allow for de-gendered team, even allowing athletes with the skills but not the genetically-endowed physical attributes to have a place to play....

You sure? I cannot find records adjusted to weight, but the male record is ~2:01h and the female 2:17h

Edit: Why is there a cake next to my name? It cannot be that I am on lemmy for a whole year already? Fuck.

No. There are still a lot of serious journalists on it. It is still a very important media for journalists to quickly share information.

But the porn&hate bots and the uncontrolled trolls make it unbearable. It has always been rough on twitter, but it has become an utter shitshow.

menemen ,

Linux on old School Machines?

Hi all, the private school I work at has a tonne of old windows 7/8 era desktops in a student library. The place really needs upgrades but they never seem to prioritise replacing these machines. Ive installed Linux on some older laptops of mine and was wondering if you all think it would be worth throwing a light Linux distro on...

My son is using my 12 year old Asus 1215 netbook, that cost 300€ back then with Xubuntu to learn programming. Works fine. He can even run Minecraft on it. It glitches a lot though. It has an Intel Atom cpu…

We first tried Linux MX, but Xubuntu runs better.

Some of them are really succesful. Many people care. Others don’t.

Here the current Steam charts. Many indie games, some few with really low specs. Banana only needs 30MB RAM. Seems to be a great game. Hostly now, why are 50k people playing that “game” currently?

But back on topic: Yes, AAA games are more succesfull and earn much more money, but claiming “no one cares about indie” is stupid, when so many people play games like Rust, Stardew Valley, Prison Architect, Terraria, RimWorld, Valheim, The Forest, …

There is tons of porn on twitter since a long time. They somehow managed to keep it away from “normal” twitter. That is why it worked. That has been eroding for a couple of month now with the “invasion of the porn-bots”. If they don’t manage to continue to separate the porn-twitter from the non-porn twitter I don’t think that will end well for them.

You kinda do, though. I’ve been smoking for 13 years. And I’ve been smoking quite heavily about, 1.5 pack per day on average.

I tried to stop several times and it didn’t work out. Then one day 10 years ago, I realized how crazily much money I spend on that “hobby” and how I’ll need that money for my wedding a year later. And then I just stopped.

I used nicotine free cigarettes as a crutch for a while, but that was it. It was surprisingly easy, when before I was almost shaking during a 2 hour flight because of nicotine withdrawal…

What this boils down to imo is, when you really want to stop, you can just stop. Try to find out why you want to stop and don’t miss the opportunity window. If I hadn’t stopped that day, I’d probably still be smoking.

I once was in the restroom when my (then) boss (plus later doctor father) came to the toilet and farted as loudly as humanly possible. It was very satisfying. Happy that guy is not my boss anymore, he thought his scientific staff are his personal slaves.
