ChemicalPilgrim , in ‘Make money by denying care’: new US rules aim to curb use of approval by private health insurances

They were outraged that the death panels wouldn’t be able to use profit motive any more.

lolola ,
@lolola@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Well it’s obviously better because if consumers get mad about the decisions from the death panel at company A, they can just go to company B. Like if you don’t like McDonald’s, you can just go to Burger King instead.

Except there might not be a Burger King restaurant (let’s say in Burger King’s “network”) anywhere near where you live. And your employer already decided that everyone on the payroll has to eat at McDonald’s, and trying to deviate from that is a gigantic expensive hassle for some reason. And you’re basically locked into a single burger chain for the year, except for a tiny window of time when you can elect to switch. And you’re on the verge of starvation.

evatronic ,

I want my death panels incentivized by … keeping me alive to keep paying taxes, instead of incentivized to reduce costs and increase short-term profits.

bluGill ,

Everyone does that. Unless you are filthy rich you cannot afford whatever medical costs you might have. Private insurance means you get to choose which death panel decides your case - except that the way insurance is setup in the US you don't get that choice.

maynarkh ,

Okay, stupid question, as an European I don’t know if that’s the case with our insurance. Sure there may be waiting times for organ donors or whatnot, but healthcare is not going to put me into debt. I’ve had one in a million illnesses in my family where one has to stay at a hospital for months before and after a complex surgery, but it never has been a money issue.

bluGill ,

Most beople have health insurance here and don't go into debt. it is a minority that run into problems.

you may not be allowed some expensive care, but your doctor won't tell you it is an option elsewhere as you can't get it. If you have such a condition you could go to a different country for care, but odds are you don't as such things are rare.

People here trying to make this about masking bad business decisions etc don’t live in Oakland. I live here, it’s really bad right now.

I was joking with a friend that a lot of Oakland feels like a bad 80s dystopia film…like you know those scenes with hobos warming themselves around a burning oil drum, stripped and burned out cars everywhere, piles of trash, drug addicts and prostitutes wandering around, etc? That’s literally real life in a large part of east Oakland. Like I’ve swear to god seen a half dozen girls at one intersection twerking in the middle of the street on the yellow lines, and one block over is a 5 block long encampment (16th and international/ 12th st).

Like this shit is on Google street view! It’s not hard to find. Follow this road all the way down to Fruitvale ave, it’s like a solid mile of a 3rd world refugee camp.

The crime stats and stories in this case are so bad they'd be comical if it didn't represent desperate people.

Since 2019, police have logged 1,335 incidents in the vicinity of the restaurant on Oakport Street — more than any other location in Oakland, the newspaper reported.

That number includes nine robberies, two commercial burglaries, four domestic violence incidents and 1,174 car break-ins, according to Oakland police data shared with the Chronicle.

I saw elsewhere that a guy got robbed there, came back to do a news interview, and got robbed again. The crime stats mean basically a crime a day at that location.

Zaktor ,

I like how they list a single-digit numbers for a few crimes and then 1,174 car break-ins. 9 robberies and 2 burglaries in 4 years is almost nothing, but sounds like car break-ins are basically constant.

I’ve had a couple friends who’ve had some mental health issues that came on very suddenly with no warning. They didn’t go out and hurt anyone, but from where they ended up it probably wasn’t that big of a leap if their friends and family weren’t on top of things trying to reel them in and get them help. I could definitely imagine them becoming a danger to themselves or others if they were left to their own devices for 2 months when it went down.

prole ,

This is a federal program. It costs them nothing

That’s really the most fucked up thing. These are always states that already take far more from the federal government than they provide in taxes, and they complain as if they’d be the ones paying for this shit.

As someone who’s in a state that gives far more to the US government in taxes than we take, I should have more of a say where that money goes, and I would prefer to continue giving aid to these children in Iowa. In fact, it should be more.

Goferking0 ,

Her only claim of accomplishment is that the state has a huge surplus, which is simply due to her cutting just about everything simply so she can trigger tax cuts for the rich.

Not even the first federal money she’s rejected, when not misappropriating the federal money she has taken

Boddhisatva ,

That’s actually not the case. Per the linked article…

States that participate in the federal program are required to cover half of the administrative costs, which would cost an estimated $2.2 million in Iowa, the news release says.

Of course, that’s no excuse to turn this program down. Particularly since she also just announced that the state will “end Fiscal Year 2023 with a balance of $1.83 billion in the General Fund, $902 million in reserve funds and $2.74 billion in the Taxpayer Relief Fund.” $2.2 million is a drop in the bucket when it would benefit so many needy children.

AeroLemming ,

So you mean any rich asshole could just feed every kid in Iowa for a fraction of a fraction of their wealth, but isn’t? Eat the fucking rich.

Vent ,

$40 is not enough to feed a kid for an entire month, and it’s only for low-income kids, not all kids. And it’s only for the summer, not year-round. It’s a good thing and a no-brainer, but it’s not feeding every kid in the state. It’s not even completely feeding the kids it benefits.

Obama literally passed the best we’ve gotten in a while, and that was with Republicans blocking every possible detail they could. Stop trying to imply both sides are the same.

skuzz ,

One party wants to take us back to the 1950s, the other party pretends to want change. Both parties want the status quo. They’re the ruling class and they want we peons to stay in our place and produce wealth for them. There’s not a Left and a Right anymore, there’s center-right and deep-right.

Time and again, Democrats claim to want to help, but even when they are a majority, they always find a way to blame Republicans for their bills not getting passed. This is by design. They keep receiving votes because, “obviously, we’re trying!” when in reality they don’t want to risk their wealth any more than anyone else in the ruling class. They all live in a bubble outside of reality where they don’t even have to think about or concern themselves with “tiny” problems like medical debt thanks to perks like their government health plan and voting for their own pay raises.

Every once in a blue, they dangle a carrot like the affordable care act, net neutrality, or the attempts to delete student loan debt, so they can keep voters coming back and voting D, but it’s all just a contrived farce.

Unfortunately, now it’s either voting for fascism or voting for the status quo, so for the preservation of the country, more will vote D, and the Democratic party will assume it is because We The People like their weak attempts at policy.

Perjury is more than just saying something factually wrong on the stand. Republicans spent years talking about how getting trump in a courtroom was a perjury trap because he would make a small mistake like recall the January 12 of 2011 was a Saturday and then they prosecution would be like, “no it wasn’t and now you go to jail because we hate America”. In reality, perjury basically takes someone knowingly and intentionally entering testimony that is false. Simply forgetting that he wasn’t president at the time would not qualify.
