Microsoft Account to local account conversion guide erased from official Windows 11 guide — instructions redacted earlier this week (www.tomshardware.com)

Microsoft has been pushing hard for its users to sign into Windows with a Microsoft Account. The newest Windows 11 installer removed the easy bypass to the requirement that you make an account or login with your existing account. If you didn’t install Windows 11 without a Microsoft Account and now want to stop sending the...

[Poll] Majority of young voters say it’s harder to buy a house, raise a family, get a good job: Poll [Miranda Nazzaro | 06/23/24 | The Hill] (thehill.com)

The majority of voters under 30 said it has become harder to buy a house, raise a family and get a good job in comparison to the previous generations, according to a new poll.

For a lot of people I know, if they didn’t have their unskilled union job, they would be entirely screwed

Doesn’t stop them from voting regardedly to screw us all

This is my favorite bulkshit word lol. Ain’t nobody axxed but they it is

cheese_greater ,

Does this mean you love it and want to keep it all to yourself? Also how does it smell?

cheese_greater ,

Is it plausible for a Lemmy feature where it can automatically ReaderView post the content of the article i the content so we don’t have to deal with WildWest text rendering with every article?

Touché, yes, I see that in many but not all cases

I would be seriously motivated to counterlegislate the posting of what Jesus replaced all of them with:

Golden rule: treat others [at minimum, if not better than] how you would want to be treated. And help your neighbor to upgrade their standards if that seems to be a bottleneck even still

cheese_greater ,

That’s what I’m saying about upgrading their standards. If you want to be treated and treat others like shit, the person with higher standards should be deferred to as the default de minima of social decency. Like, people should be invited and introduced to being treated with respect and dignity and be able to experience that first-hand with grace but also assertiveness.

I know this wasn’t iMessage per se (altho its par for the course for that curs-ed app) but this serves as a good reminder for posterity.

Its actually one of the issues with iCloud and the signin process because if you do the normal thing trying to sign into your account anywhere outside of AppStore, it automaticaly opts you in to iCloud and its showtime for all your data in terms of transit and restoring it and activating all of the crappy, leaky things like iMessage and Backup in addition to all 500+ apps you have that automatically synced themself the moment you opened and all times you used them if you didn’t de-toggle and delete whatever it shared up to that point

cheese_greater ,

You are mistaken at least as of the present and even a while back. They reset all defaults everytime you log into iCloud, its likely an attempt to discourage logging out

cheese_greater ,

It does that for Mac too. They do it for all devices I believe altho I can’t speak to Watch or the glasses. Likely so for them to be consistent but can comment outside of conjecture

Anywhere outside of AppStore signin, you’re basically getting factory defaults which is

  • iMessage
  • Facetime
  • iCloud Backup
  • All your apps that onky have opt-out iCloud sync
cheese_greater ,

If you had deleted in Signal that would sync right away before it visually rendered all the contacts and message content. False equivalence

cheese_greater ,

Two things can be true lol. He should have insisted on disappearing messages and Signal use for the app but a lot of people are quite resistant to the notion that they don’t get to “keep” your conversations forever for whatever purpose they choose

cheese_greater ,

I don’t think that’s the case, I believe its either

  1. Delete for me
  2. Delete for everyone

Delete for me inherently deletes for your associated devices using that Signal account

cheese_greater ,

But yeah, companies don’t need oversight, the Free Market Sky Daddy covers it all in the blood of the lamb and makes it faultless

cheese_greater ,

Its kinda funny this happened with iCloud e2ee. Backlash, then much of it now is convergently encrypted but they still have the filenames and checksums/hashes for everything (which is emphatically not e2ee or at at least zero-trust as implied by the designation) and they never really needed the contents anyway. All the deets are in the metadata which is only “standard” (un)protected.

cheese_greater ,

Don’t get why they don’t just embed them in the middle like a few growing and actually good channels I watch do with their content.

I just fast-forward but they’re embedded in the content so there’s not really a way to “block” them but I don’t mind skipping if im not interested like 45-60 secs.

Ads are the worst at the start and more tolerable in the middle, altho that is reversed for music where the content needs to maintain continuity

cheese_greater ,

Oh, absolutely! I would never pay for YT+ because its paying for me to still be G’s product and I won’t do it. Just saying that its interesting that what I’ve seen is tolerable (not that it isn’t a thistle in the side) and they want to overengineer some grand final solution that will alienate a lot of people

The next decade or two are going to be interesting in that consumer habits by necessity and choice are shifting so radically that a lot of dumb legacy industries and models are gonna have serious existential difficulties and are dead corps walking.

cheese_greater ,

There’s lots of stuff like enforcing WebKit for browsers, iCloud for background cloud syncing, subscription disadvantages (end trial for competitor = end of period, end trial for Apple = now), giving their 1st party native apps advantageous functionality competitors can’t (yet), etc.

This is a working list, I’ll be back

cheese_greater , (edited )

Its gonna have to work its way up eventually and you gotta realize at some point they will wear out their very limited legitimacy if they haven’t already. They already basically have to ban birth control and any “loophole” to forced delivery/birth to be ideologically consistent as enforced by their political stakeholders so their time is already very limited. Hopefully Biden can get the House and Senate and Presidency and rebalance the Court to eliminate the undue influence of these theocrat/oligarch helpers + wannabes

cheese_greater ,

I can see how it might be seen as more facile to correct/critique than to produce the original work. This is actually true, same as how its easier to iterate on something than to wholesale create the thing.

Definitely find it easier to extend or elaborate on something “old” over crapping out a new thing, altho I can see how that is not always the case if its too “legacy”. ChatGPT is intriguing because it can arguably modularly generate many of the parts, you would just need to glue them together properly and ensure all the outputs are cohesive and coherent

For example: if you’re a lawyer and you generate anything, you must at the very least

  1. Read, not dictate
  2. Ensure all caselaw cited a) definitely exists and b) is relevant to the facts and arguments they are being used to support
cheese_greater ,

Im actually kinda low-key disappointed that Robert Evans has been joke-threatening us with Raytheon ads forever and not a single one yet on Behind the Bastards. I guess they’re a little bit out of our aggregate net worth
