This is what I don’t get about people like Vance who criticize others for being childless. You don’t know what is going on in that person’s life. They may have chosen to not have kids for myriad reasons. They may not have had the choice due to health reasons. Maybe their partner had trauma in their childhood and they don’t want to continue generational trauma.

Judging them for not having kids is just idiotic.

motor_spirit ,

Idiots don’t care, they just get upset when others enjoy freedoms they do not or simply do not understand or share. Misery loves company and many people are cunts.

Pronell ,

It’s deeper and more dangerous than that.

The childless cat ladies are now the ‘others’, outsiders to the in group and free to be attacked.

That means disabled, gay, asexual, mentally unbalanced, liberal, and thoroughly un-American.

MagicShel ,

They need to be careful about how narrowly they define their one true Scotsman. The more people they attack, the more they risk “hurting the wrong people.”

dhork ,

It all comes down to a lack of empathy. These people made their own life choices that worked out for them personally, but can’t get their head around the notion that other people can make different life choices (or have the choice made for them due to circumstances beyond their control).

It’s like they perceive only one path to happiness - the path they took - and look with disdain on anyone who is doing it differently.

I’m sure Vance read Aniston’s story and was secretly thinking to himself “Hah! That’s what you get when you promote your career over your family”, while booking several campaign trips which will take him away from his kids for weeks at a time.

Wytch ,

It’s lack of empathy and lack of personal exposure. They live in bubbles where they only associate with people who think and act like themselves. It’s a fertile ground for disconnection with reality, and it breeds this withholding of empathy for those who live outside the bubble.

Rhaedas ,

And she has kids. Just not hers. So somehow her not birthing a kid makes her bad. That says right there where he thinks a woman's job is.

Today ,

This is the nature of all Republicans that i know. It’s not just a disrespect for people from different backgrounds, they don’t even see people who live a life different from their own. They’re anti-abortion because bad things don’t happen in their world - there’s no rape or child abuse or mental health issues or addiction. Well, there are those things but they don’t talk about it.

I work in a public school with kids with severe disabilities. A Republican friend was shocked that these kids attend school. I explained that the other option (the old way) was going to an institution where the rate of abuse was outrageously high and they’re not making babies only because the girls go on birth control to stop their periods for easier hygiene. He said, “Oh my God! That’s disgusting!” No shit dude - that’s the world we live in - step outside of your own before you start telling others how to live theirs.

ETA: I kind of got on an angry tangent there. Sorry about that.

MagicShel ,

Dude, let those angry tangents out. It helps people empathize but it’s also a heavy weight to be carrying around inside your gut. Don’t apologize for being outraged by outrageous things.

ZoopZeZoop ,

To add to this, a lot of people don’t see individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities (IDD) as people. To them, they’re something else.

A person with IDD has all the same rights, including voting, as any other person. To reinforce that, many (or maybe all) states have their rights specifically codified (e.g., Florida Statute 393.13). To remove those rights, it requires a court order, just like it does for you and me.

In Florida, the supports for individuals with IDD promotes and assists them with the voting process, especially with getting to the polls to cast their votes!

teamevil ,

I don’t disagree with the ability for IDD to vote, but after living in an apartment complex with a large portion of “intellectually challenged” (they were quiet fine neighbors…the complex was getting away with no maintenance a other scams) I worry that unscrupulous individuals would try to influence them to vote against their best interest (all im am saying is they might not get to vote their choice) which is a shitty thing to do

Mouselemming ,

They thought up lots of ways to not vote for the last woman because she was a woman without saying “I can’t vote for her, she’s a woman.” Sure she “wasn’t likeable,” you don’t like women who you don’t wanna sleep with, or who don’t wanna sleep with you, and she’s both. Sure she was tarred with Bill’s shady stuff, but Trump had way worse. And what successful male politician has nothing to regret, even Bernie? What person has been in charge of any aspect of the Middle East without being tangentially involved in bloodshed and chaos? It’s their specialty. Nothing was uniquely disqualifying about her except her vagina. (Not sure if she still had a uterus, hysterectomy is pretty common)

So Kamala will have to make that “weakness” her strength, in a post-Roe world she can defend the right to female bodily autonomy, and also point out the threat to mixed marriage that’s right in there along with the threats to everything LGBTQ+.

It is unbelievable to me how people just hand wave away the fact that Biden inherited the Covid economy.

Name one thing Biden has actually done to actually stop the slide into fascism? To uphold the constitution?

I’ll notice your not actually answering my question: are you okay with an administration that allows that self same fascist piece of shit to run around free as a bird without so much as an indictment for nearly three years- after inciting a bonafide insurrection?

Are you okay with that self-same fascist piece of shit being allowed to hold- and probably sell- the most dangerous secrets this country has; to our enemies?

You’re the one not getting it.

If Biden were half the president he promised to be in 2020; and a quarter of the president he’s promising to be in 2024, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. Because Trump would be in jail.

The simple, blatant truth is that Biden is unwilling or incapable of stopping fascism. It doesn’t matter which. The longer it goes unchecked, the more likely Trump gains power.

The clock is running out, and seems Biden to think it’s okay to let it. It’s. Not.

Grandwolf319 ,

I don’t know too much about him and idk if he wants it, but I’ve heard people mention Gavin Newsom.

My personal pick would be AOC, I actually like her politics but I’m sure she would get loads of opposition.

bolexforsoup ,

AOC and the progressive wing hitched their cart to Biden and expressed zero interest in the presidency so that’s out. They were the single group keeping him in the race when it comes to party support.

Newsom has clearly tested the waters (both 2020 and 2024) and both times backed off for whatever reason, so he’s not interested in putting himself forward this time it seems.

All of this is to say this illustrates my larger point. We can’t say “they are keeping someone from running“ when no one is willing to come forward. Early in the primary sure that was a valid claim, but now? When the voice for him to step down is so loud? If somebody wants it, now is the time. So if they’re not stepping forward, that’s not the establishment. That’s their choice.

Grandwolf319 ,

expressed zero interest in the presidency so that’s out.

I’m pretty sure they don’t want to divide the vote by getting leftist thinking about others than the DNC candidate. That formula changes when said candidate steps down.

when no one is willing to come forward.

You have a point here, it’s like the opposite of 2020, no one wants to step into this mess this late.

bolexforsoup ,

Sure I definitely think that is their strategy, plus there have been a lot of reputable reports saying that they likely extracted a lot of support/concessions from the party by sticking behind Biden over the last few months. My point isn’t what the reasoning is necessarily, but more that they are all electing not to run for various reasons.

Grandwolf319 ,

Imo it’s not a “fair” shot for whoever takes the spot. You have less time and overall it won’t look good as compared to have been there from the get go.

That’s what’s so frustrating about this, Joe staying in the race might be the best way forward… because he has doubled down all this time.

xmunk ,

Nobody. Because it’s political suicide to run against a sitting president.

We did not have a legitimate robust primary.

I’ve seen this argument so many times and it’s getting hard to read it as being given in good faith.

bolexforsoup ,

They could’ve run. Period.

ShepherdPie ,

It’s 100% a bad faith argument. We’re dealing with the mess that the party leadership created and these people are just posturing for why it’s our fault that party leaders continue to push such terrible candidates in the face of Trump. They did it in 2016, they did it again in 2020, and now once more in 2024. The blame lies squarely with them.

bolexforsoup ,

It’s not bad faith. We just disagree. Not everyone who disagrees with you is arguing in bad faith.

ShepherdPie , (edited )

It is a bad faith argument when you’re only asking people to list potential candidates so you can nitpick them away and claim that “they could have run against Biden” when we all know that’s not how things work with an incumbent especially if that person needs party funding and support later down the road.

Edit: look at your comment here:

Don’t bother trying to reason with people who don’t lift a finger for anything socially or politically important for 3.5 years then just show up in the final inning for the general election to complain about how they aren’t represented at all and don’t like any candidates. They’re children going “it’s my money and I want it NOW!” with whatever nebulous political outcomes they want.

The people who’ve been sounding the alarm for 8 years after Clinton lost and Biden nearly lost are “children” to you. Meanwhile, you have complete faith in the party leadership who keeps fumbling the ball again and again by picking the absolute worst candidates to back. People can’t even win running against a guy like Trump.

This shows your true intentions and why your argument here is in bad faith. You have blind loyalty to whomever the party picks for you and are now throwing a tantrum because they decided your guy wasn’t going to cut it.

kautau ,

There are hardline Democrats and Republicans who aren’t going to change their positions over anything. There’s also many people who don’t pay close attention to politics and only pick up on big news like this. Those are the people that are going to be influenced unfortunately. These people exist. They are uninformed, easily influenced and they can swing the outcome unfortunately.

If there are swing voters it’s likely a really small number. At the end of the day the Democrats are dug in on Not Trump, and they have the numbers. It’s a simple problem to identify, but not an easy one to solve.

mozz ,
@mozz@mbin.grits.dev avatar

Read the username again, it's much worse than that

Be that as it may, Britain in the 1970s and before actually had a really good answer to this: The government just buys enough property and rents it out to people at reasonable rates, to puncture the bubble and make it unprofitable to be a landlord in the first place as a "job." People have affordable places to live, we don't have to have a fight about declaring it "illegal" to own or rent out property, and people with spare cash are motivated to invest it in businesses instead of in properties. Literally everyone wins. Which of course, means America will see it as communism and fight to the death to stop it from happening.

Not saying you're wrong in your solution either, just saying one other way which has a proven track record.

disguy_ovahea ,

Supply and demand. Corporate interests will only buy homes when theres a profit incentive. A housing shortage makes great profit opportunities.

If there are too many airbnbs so they don’t get rented, there’s no longer a profit. If there are enough houses that you can’t buy to flip at guaranteed markup, there goes the profit. If there’s enough houses that you’re not guaranteed a quick sale on your investment, there goes the profit. The point is there are limits on those ownership patterns so you can build your way out of it

Everyone should be incredibly concerned when their political representatives demand 100% loyalty and attack anyone that disagrees with their actions and labels them an enemy.

A government that refuses to accept criticism from its own members is either facist or walking down that path

hydroptic ,

It’s the same with that one rabbi who’s been labeled antisemitic because he’s against the genocide of Palestinians.

Edit: this dude:

https://sopuli.xyz/pictrs/image/5268c030-c1ed-4253-ac12-14cd1d160314.webp

Eg. the Canary Mission has labeled him as an antisemite who trivializes the Holocaust because he thinks that in Canada the genocide of First Nations people would be important to teach more about instead of focusing on the Holocaust

undergroundoverground ,

That reminds me of two orthodox Jewish guys who were arrested on charges of antisemitic hate, by the metropolitan police, for burning an Israeli flag.

  1. Equating Israel with wider Jewish-ness is actaully antisemitic, unlike burning a flag. So, the only antisemitism there was conducted by the police. The met keeping up its proud tradition of institutional racism there.
  2. These boys are going to get hauled up in front of a judge on antisemitism charges, only to be asked swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth

On the fucking Torah

Never heard of Canary Mission before, but they’re quite an interesting covert Israeli operation.

Our country’s government is an absolute sham that only benefits the wealthy, and needs to be torn down and rebuilt for the people…

Maggoty ,

I just want to be clear we mean being a member of the core group fascists identify with, not that the group is all fascists.

givesomefucks ,

Here’s an example because changing context might help:

I’m a white guy

But I’m not a white supremacist.

That doesn’t stop me from being in their “core group” which is white people.

That doesn’t mean every white person is a white supremacist. But if a white person speaks out against white supremacy, they’ll hate you even though you’re white.

Often they take that really hard. The KKK killed a lot of white people, in some areas all they killed was white people who disagreed with them, because no Black people could live there in the first place.

Its why people always need to speak out against that shit, even if you’re not in a targeted group, if they ever cross your personal moral line and you speak out, you’re immediately one of “them” and not “us”.

And fascists always need a “them” so they’ll keep moving people out of “us”.

Maggoty ,

Yup. I’m just trying to provide context because accusing someone of associating all Jews with Israel has become a favorite argument of conservatives in their attempt to make us all look like anti-semites.

The only Justice to be impeached in US history was Associate Justice Samuel Chase in 1805. The House of Representatives passed Articles of Impeachment against him; however, he was acquitted by the Senate.

The Mullahs of Iran cannot be replaced no matter what they do. They are also the final arbiters on all matters.

Gotcha. That’s a fair comparison.

That’s exactly how I read that title. Oh, I can see there was no need to be sneaky. Apologies.

I’m not going to Google it. If it’s fake, he wants that. Fuck em.

njm1314 , (edited ) in Samuel Alito’s wife claimed upside-down flag was ‘international sign of distress’

Except as Alito said himself and she’s repeating here it was in response to a political sign. Therefore the flag is by definition political statement and not a sign of distress. They’ve backed themselves into a corner. They’re claiming they saw Democrat sign so they wanted to show their sign. They chose this one, a traitors flag. Believe people when they show you who they are.

There’s one way to hold them accountable, and they’re pretty fucking aware of it:

reuters.com/…/us-supreme-court-seeks-security-fun…

You don’t decide to ramp up security because people are happy with you. You do it when you know you’re doing something incredibly unpopular and so you want protection from the target you put on your own back with your incredibly unpopular decision.

They know exactly what they’re doing.

Edit: To be clear this is in no way an endorsement or suggestion regarding “holding them accountable.” “Beware that, when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become a monster… for when you gaze long into the abyss. The abyss gazes also into you.”

Lemming6969 ,

That quote is trash. There are no limits when fighting true evil. At worst it’s zero sum and every other outcome is preferable.
