I don’t have kids of my own, but through my time with my step-kids, I’ve learned I would’ve loved to have one or two. I totally understand people who don’t want kids. They can be a huge, expensive hassle. But I feel like I’ve gotten so much more back from them than it ever cost me. Can someone explain me USA obsession with prom and similar school rituals?

I just don’t get it… Why is that important, especially for kids now, that feel like they need to do a YouTube video asking for a date or doing some meme stuff. Some teens even hire the hottest celebrity or ask them to appear in their prom? This is so bizarre for me, all that just for a frivolous night....

While many in the US have one or more gun, I would argue most were unaware of bump stocks until the 2017 Las Vegas Shooting. TL;DR, a bump stock uses the recoil of the rifle as a “spring” to help pull the trigger over and over again - effectively behaving like a “machine gun.” As already stated, it does not meet the US legal definition of a machine gun because you’re still firing one round per trigger pull. The bump stock basically makes the trigger pull automatic.

As for why it’s a big debate, read the wiki article. One guy killed A LOT of people pretty quickly using this device to greatly increase his rate of fire. It was a public eye opener for much of the country. So much so, that even Donald f’ing Trump came to the realization that something should be don. He didn’t even really get much push back on it from the right or the NRA. That’s how sobering the massacre was. That said, it happened long enough ago that it’s memory probably isn’t powerful enough for anyone to change the law to ban them and similar mechanisms (see: the binary trigger elsewhere in the comments). If they tried banning them today, the NRA and conservatives would fight it tooth and nail.

Seriously, as an emotional being, the guy is just empty. From his comment about not understanding why soldiers would go to war when they get nothing out of it, to his never ending willingness (eagerness, even) to toss literally anyone under the bus to save his own ass. This guy really has no earthly concept of sacrifice, honor, duty, community… seriously pull out a fucking thesaurus.

I think he is the single most self-centered person I’ve ever seen, heard of, or read about. I’m not even being hyperbolic. The greatest writers in history wouldn’t put a character like him to paper because readers wouldn’t buy it!

You say that’s how he understands friendship, and I agree. I’d only add that he genuinely thinks everyone else is just wrong about it. It’s kind of sad, and also kind of amazing to watch.

I would only add that if someone calls out a specific behavior, really listen to them. Try to see their point of view. Often times, racism is about perspective, and it helps for both sides of that discussion to see and understand the other’s perspective. While their call out may just be a misunderstanding, it doesn’t lessen the hurt feelings and strong emotions that come with that.

A good example of this is the push for flat, or no, income tax; usually to being replaced by increased usage tax/sales tax/VAT. In the US, poor households tend to be minorities, and such a policy would disproportionately affect those people. Simply pushing for the policy isn’t necessarily racist. Not listening to economists who say the policy would disproportionately hurt minorities, would likely be seen by many as racist.

My wife was like this when we met. She also grew up more poor than me. I still see her washing a lot of stuff by hand that should be in the dishwasher. Old habits die hard. The unspoken agreement is when we run out of a utensil, or get down to one, we run the dishwasher.

I think this is the best answer. Think of it in terms of what would the boss (a good boss, that is) say? I can actually hear my managers say this. Many of the options here could be taken by the other person as you thinking you’re “better than” them. This is a fair and accurate response that doesn’t get personal.

You’ll find that folks can be gullible at any age. My step-kids, who live with their dad in Texas, are in their early 20s and get about 99% of their information from either YouTube or TikTok. For the youngest, church plays a big part. Generally speaking, they are good kids, but they are both gullible AF. I’m betting OP’s sibling has a similar diet of media consumption.

Adding to what others have said, Rogan often has, at best, a surface level understanding of the topics covered on his show. His guests often have an air of credibility because of their credentials, even when their views are often seen as outliers or plain wrong in their fields of expertise. Because Joe often doesn’t know enough to press them on questionable or disingenuous statements, his many many listeners are led to believe there’s something to the bullshit they’re hearing.

Huberman does something similar, but is worse because he often knows better.

I’m sure there’s something, and I try to remind myself when talking to the kids that they’re figuring out the world around them all the time just like i did when I was their age. It’s really hard getting them to look outside of YT and TikTok for information. Awhile back, the younger one got into the Atlantis mythology and started talking about it a lot. Theories of Atlantean origin are pretty common in white supremacist circles, so that was kind of stressful!

I would add that if you are securing loans above a certain total amount or used for certain purchase types to make a purchase, that purchase is subject to a sales tax that must come out of the purchaser’s pocket. The trouble with wealth taxes is that most of the “wealth” isn’t liquid, but it is often used, for example, as collateral to purchase Twitter. In this instance, the wealth used should be treated as liquid taxable assets. I think those taxes should come either from the purchaser divesting from some amount of assets or a straight cash, not from another loan, payment.

No sideloading? Sure iOS and iPadOS are pretty locked down, but homebrew? Most of the apps on my Mac didn’t come from the App Store.

As for the price, sure they’re expensive, but they last! I have a 2006 mini still kicking around, a 2013 iMac still chugging along… neither still receive updates, but that doesn’t stop me from running some flavor of Linux on them for one reason or another. On that front, Apple has pissed me off a bit, though. The first Mac I used was a G4 that got software updates for right around 10-years. The mini I have got about the same. The iMac got 8 years, IIRC. That made me mad.
