Tlaib Slams Biden for Deploying Troops to Middle East as Israel Bombs Lebanon (truthout.org)

Outspoken advocates for Palestinian rights, including Representatives Rashida Tlaib (D-Michigan) and Cori Bush (D-Missouri), have said that bolstering the U.S.’s military presence in the region will only worsen an already catastrophic situation created by Israeli forces over the past year — and could increase the already...

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_jaw_shrinkage

The main contributing factor to the recent increase in malocclusion is widely considered to be due to a sharp reduction in chewing stress, especially during critical periods of craniofacial growth.[10][1] Experiments done on non-human subjects have shown that induced nasal blockages and/or dietary changes earlier in life lead to maladaptive morphological change in their jaws, intended to simulate what we are observing globally in human children.[4] Significant craniofacial changes due to diet have even been experimentally shown in pigs during development; researchers fed groups either a hard-consistency diet or a soft-consistency diet, for eight months in total.[11] Drastic differences in jaw and facial musculature, facial structure, and tooth-crowding were observed; researchers directly related the findings to what we are observing more in human populations.[11]

Battery upcycling is also becoming a thing. If an old battery is not fit for a car anymore it can still be useful in other contexts; like you could convert it into a battery for home or grid storage with minimal processing.

I’m skeptical that hybrids with ICEs and transmissions at their heart really do have more longevity than BEVs and electric motors. ICE and especially hybrids are inherently more complex than BEVs, and have many more moving mechanical parts to wear out over time. So while BEVs may technically be “harder to repair”, there’s actually much less to repair in the first place. not to mention less maintenance like dozens of oil changes over the life of the car.

it’s not just capitalism, the US is a very spread out place compared to most other countries. if you want everyone to use mass transit you’re asking them to either 1) move into the city for similar commute times, or 2) spend an inordinate amount of time riding busses around the suburbs for the same distance commute. Neither are good solutions.

And also we have solved the “getting to work” debate with teleconferencing. why should we need cars or an even bigger mass transit system when most people can simply work from home?

acosmichippo , (edited )
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

Most US metro areas are just too spread out for mass transit to be a worthwhile solution for most people. The only solution to significantly reducing cars in the US is telecommuting; unfortunately businesses generally don’t like it, so we need to find a way for this to be encouraged by the government with subsidies or something.

acosmichippo ,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

The US was not a '‘very spread out’ place before WW2

no kidding, the population was also like a third of what it is now.

in fact cities like San Francisco were world leaders in mass transit, and trains were the axis of transportation of both people and goods (even existing suburbs were connected to trains, in whatever shape and size they come). The us cities spent and spend an enormous amount of money and debt to pay for all the road infrastructure,

yeah, mass transit within cities is a great idea and should be used as much as possible. I am not shitting on the general idea of mass transit. what I’m saying is, in the context of a practical daily commute, mass transit only works to a point, and a LOT of people live beyond that point.

Most people do not work remote all the time, even flexible / hybrid workers need to transport themselves some trips per week.

again, I’m not saying mass transit should never be used. what is the cost:benefit for the infrastructure to cover out to the suburbs? how much time is added to very long trips, and are people willing to deal with that?

I have dozens of Philips Hue bulbs 6-10 years old and I honestly don’t think one of them has died. I’m sure they have lost some luminance over time, but they still get the job done no problem. I rarely run them at 100% anyway.

But yeah I have also had some cheaper LED bulbs die within a few years.

people need to buy single-use plastic garbage bags.

or maybe they really don’t? not every bit of trash needs to be contained in a tiny plastic bag.

edit: for example, instead of dedicated bag for cat litter I can usually fit it in a partially empty large trash bag from around the house (as I take it out to the toter). And for dog poop I buy corn-starch based biodegradable bags.

it just requires a minimal amount of effort and foresight. you can do it.

Overclockers attempting (often in vain) to use them for sub-ambient-temperature cooling for computer components have known this for a long time.

aren’t you still limited by ambient air temp because the hot side of the Peltier needs to be cooled by air anyway?

I have a Peltier based car cooler, and that’s basically the only use case for these things that makes sense:

I don’t really even see the point of that to be honest. if we’re talking short periods anyway, a nicely insulated cooler with ice packs (cooled by a heat-pump freezers) is way better imo.

“Where I now stand on the question is that Scripture, read as narrative, offers a vision of a God who is dynamic and personal, and can constantly surprise us by reshaping what we thought we knew as settled matters.”

what a meaningless word salad. God didn’t write a new book - you did. you redefined your personal beliefs, probably based on empathy found in the real world, and you’re now retconning your God to fit. It’s almost like your Bible actually means jack shit. fucking religion man.

@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not criticizing the man, I’m criticizing religion. if you can unilaterally change your moral values, what is the point? That’s exactly how the rest of the secular world works.

and i’m not really concerned with changing conservative christian minds here in the comments section of lemmy. if christians get a little butthurt from reading my comment, so be it.

Sony’s Concord reportedly cost $400M to develop | VGC (www.videogameschronicle.com)

$200M before the Sony acquisition and $200M after. It’s a little hard to believe. The story seems to only be coming from Colin Moriarty right now, but I trust Jordan Middler to consider it at least reasonably plausible if he wrote it up for VGC....

Sure, in the long run humanity will adapt and survive, but we will definitely have problems to address in the near-ish term like the next 100 years or so. the main problem will be an inverted age structure; there will be fewer people paying taxes, and fewer people around to take care of the older generations when they are elderly. Many developed nations are experiencing this and worried about it.

and ‘sex’ isn’t the issue; with modern education, contraception, etc you have to convince families to want to have kids. It doesn’t seem to be any one particular thing holding people back either, so it’s not as simple as subsidizing childcare or making families more financially secure. Countries in europe give lots of financial assistance to raise kids, but their birth rates are still much lower than replacement levels.

Deporting illegal immigrants who commit violent crimes, for example, would fall under that.

The actual phrasing in the poll was, “The mass deportation of undocumented immigrants”. I kind of doubt most people would think targeted deportation like for criminals would count as “mass deportation of undocumented immigrants”.

acosmichippo ,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

not to mention, as if any Americans actually want to do the jobs that undocumented immigrants are doing for us.

acosmichippo ,

I don’t think this has anything to do with covid. Trump’s entire 2016 campaign was about building a border wall, and Fox cranks up the border talk leading up to every single election cycle.

acosmichippo ,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

exactly, it would be a catastrophe. so many industries would grind to a halt without their trained laborers, and even if you did somehow manage to backfill all those with documented workers (yeah right), the cost to do so would be insane for less skilled, less efficient workers. the inflation would make post-covid look insignificant by comparison.

acosmichippo ,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

that’s not accurate. Title 42 was ended at the same time they ended the covid-19 emergency in May 2023.
