Chocrates ,

Yeah but for software you want it to work and sometimes need help, when you steal that software you are often on your own. In open source, there is nearly always an open alternative that comes with community support!

Buddahriffic ,

I mean, the only time I’ve used official support for some software was when I was having a license issue with Windows. Everything else has been solvable using the open internet.

The reason why I don’t pirate software anymore is you have no idea if the people who cracked it added malware or not and it’s, IMO, a perfect way to deliver malware.

Chocrates ,

Fair point, that is my fear too. I run Ubuntu so nearly all my software is open source already and for the slim number of tools that aren’t in just pay for them because they are good enough to warrant it imo.

ColdWater ,
@ColdWater@lemmy.ca avatar

I abuse free trial and surprisingly it works really well

257m ,

Most of the time, the tools I use to pirate are open source themselves so that isn’t really a problem for me.

Buddahriffic ,

I don’t mean the distribution tools like bittorrent etc have malware. If you pirate games or software, you run binaries provided by the people that cracked it, which don’t tend to be open source. At least they weren’t back when I was consuming them.

257m ,

I mean I used tools like UltimMC to get around having to make a minecraft account. UltimMC doesn’t provide the games themselves, that is downloaded from mojang’s website, UltimMC simply provides a way to get around basic DRM.

Summary for those who don’t get the references:

  • In Futurama (a show about a young man who gets accidentally cryogenically frozen until the year 3000), Fry finds the fossilized remains of his pet dog from the year 2000. Ultimately he assumes his dog had a good and full life after his disapperance, but in the epilogue we see that his dog waited for him in front of his workplace (Panucci’s Pizza) throughout the seasons, regardless of the weather, until he aged and died.
  • In Full Metal Alchimist: Brotherhood, the Elric brothers visit an alchemist (Shou Tucker) who is known for having created a chimera capable of understanding human speech. While they study under him, they also spent time playing with his 4 year old daughter Nina and her dog Alexander. Upon returning one day they find Shou has created a new chimera capable of understanding human speech in order to satisfy his yearly alchemist assessment requirements; when the chimera indicates it knows who the Elric brothers are and wants to go out and play it becomes obvious that the chimera was made by combining Shou’s own daughter with the family dog. The resulting being is very sad and confused and doesn’t really understand what has happened to it, and just wants to be back to normal, but there is no way to undo . This chimera is the creature pictured here.

Ultimately, these are two of the most heart-wrenching scenes in animation.

(PS: Fuck Shou Tucker!)

I know Brotherhood tells a better overall story as it aligns more closely with the manga. BUT, the music and pacing of that scene in the original anime production of FMA hits a little harder, in my opinion.

Siegfried ,

They fucking broke that show because they needed to pump up the numbers and keep up delivering anime episodes while the plot was still being written. FMA is perfectly done till around ep 25, then it’s totally ruined. FMAB rushed the first arcs of the anime because it was already seen by 9/10 of japan and resumed the first 25 episodes in like 11… it’s the only show I know characters start flanderized and deflandreizeid slowly through the show.

Now I dont know how to recommend that show. It’s like you have to be a hard fan of it in the first place to watch it correctly…

FMA’s music and characters where excellently done…

There is still a better way of recommending it, which is recommending the manga

leave_it_blank ,

For me it was the other way around. FMA had the better story with a drift at the end into the twilight zone, while FMAB drifted into a generic action show. I never understood the hype.

cmbabul ,

So I only caught a few episodes of the original(including the one in the post) and then watched brotherhood, it’s definitely rushed to that point but I loved everything after that, it wouldn’t be that hard to cut together a playlist of the first 25 of FMA and then let FMAB take over around 11 like you said.

masterspace ,

That may have been the point of the original comic, but given the caption, I think OP’s point wasn’t that both sides are bad, but was that a two party system is inherently biased towards corporate capture.

go_go_gadget ,

And while that’s a choice between the lesser of two evils, it’s not a difficult one.

There’s other choices. Moderates and Biden could choose to compromise with leftists and progressives any time. But all signs point to them preferring to lose to fascists a second time.

tills13 ,

No, there are two choices. It sucks and nobody likes it but if you don’t vote for a Dem you are giving a vote to a Rep. Cut the crap.

go_go_gadget ,

nobody likes it

Moderates like it just fine. They’re happy continuing to elect awful pro-corporate, strike blocking, genocide supporting piece of shit candidates and then expecting leftists and progressives to support them in the general. If moderates didn’t like it they would have voted for one of the many alternatives in the 2020 primaries.

You need to cut the crap. Stop lecturing leftists and progressives and giving moderates a free pass. Moderates are the majority voting bloc for Democrats and thus they take the lions share of the responsibility. Spend your effort lecturing them.

tills13 ,

I’m further left than you but anyone with a brain knows that it’s a two party system and any vote for any other party is just pissing in the ocean. Find change inside the party with progressives but at the end of the day you (unfortunately) either vote blue or red or you might as well not vote at all.

go_go_gadget ,

You can call yourself whatever you want but if at the end of the day you vote like a moderate your beliefs make no difference.

lolcatnip ,

But if you vote for a fringe party your beliefs matter more?

go_go_gadget ,

No. I’m fine with voting 3rd party or writing in knowing they’ll likely not be elected. Are moderates fine with Biden losing to Trump? If not then they need to find some policy to compromise on in order to encourage progressives and leftists to vote for Biden again. We compromised in 2020 and voted for Joe Biden in the general. We’ve gotten fuck all for it. It’s time for a compromise in the other direction. There’s no point for us to stand around a table when moderates refuse to give us a seat.

tills13 ,

I wish you luck with that

go_go_gadget ,

That’s the problem with this “both sides” take. Yes, there is no true leftist party in the US. They’re both corporatists. The Republicans are undeniably much worse, though. Anti-union, anti other labor rights, oppose every kind of social safety net, want to privatize (loot) and profit from public assets, are thoroughly in favor of racist classist policies of every type imaginable. Some democrats are too, but ALL republicans are like that.

nxdefiant ,

if they’re not neutral, they’re not journalists. A fascist journalist is just a fascist after all.

MacNCheezus ,
@MacNCheezus@lemmy.today avatar

The vast majority of journalists work for some sort of publication or news agency, in which they’re beholden to the company owners’ agenda and have to report to an editorial board, which decides what can and can not be published in accordance with their views.

You’re thinking of independent journalists, of which there are very few.

yamanii ,
@yamanii@lemmy.world avatar

And even them have their own biases, no such thing as unbiased journalism.

TheSanSabaSongbird ,

True, but not for the reasons that most people think.

TheSanSabaSongbird ,

Ok, the fact that you honestly believe this is how legitimate newsrooms work is both deeply disheartening and an indication of how little the average person knows about the news business.

Editors decide what gets published, not the editorial board which is an entirely different and unrelated body that traditionally has zero contact with the content side of things. In the business we say that there is a “firewall” between the editorial board and actual news content. The NYT or WaPo would have mass resignations of their reporters if either of their editorial boards tried to influence content.

Ownership is a bit different and obviously --as we know from the Murdoch empire-- can influence content, but in traditional operations they’ve always been very hands-off. It’s a fact, for example, that Jeff Bezos doesn’t care what the WaPo publishes and has no interest in it beyond as a business concern.

Editors do have control over content, but overwhelmingly they are concerned with doing a good job and furthering their careers and professional reputations. You’re completely misunderstanding the incentive structure in mainstream news media. Outside of the extremist advocacy journalism ecosystems --mostly but not only on the far right-- no one has any incentive to push an agenda and risk ruining their career by getting something important wrong.

MacNCheezus ,
@MacNCheezus@lemmy.today avatar

Ah yes, it’s only the evil right wing news outlets that have issues with transparency and corruption, but don’t worry, all the left wing ones are totally honest.

And all billionaires are evil exploiters… unless they own liberal newspapers, then they’re totally ethical and there is no grounds for concern.

nxdefiant ,

Everybody has some sort of bias towards something. It’s ultimately just an opinion.

Journalistic integrity isn’t about being non-biased, it’s about being upfront about bias and ideally the journalist actively trying to counter their own bias within their work.

Me: "Are you Christian?"

Her: "Yes."

I heard that song every day of December, 8 times a day, 40 times a week, 160 times that month in total.

I hate that song so much more than everyone else does.

When people make a big stink about Apple not implementing RCS I always bring this up. RCS has an open core sure - but it’s lacking plenty of features that people refer to when talking about RCS. Furthermore, the gateways used for Google’s RCS implementation are made by a company Google acquired. Would we be happy with Apple charging cell providers money to install iMessage gateways at whatever cost they wanted, because they hold the patents? No, so why would we give Google a pass?

If we want to fix this issue, force Google to relinquish their control of RCS and open the standard unencumbered with patents. Require telecoms to implement the standard in full and without deviation or be fined. Give phone manufacturers a few more years to comply and then it’s done.
