USBs nowadays are a dime a dozen basically for 16GB sticks

They can literally be bought in 10 packs for less than $30.

If they don’t give one back nowadays so be it.

Back in the day it was a terrible loss though

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I had to look into it because once you mentioned that I was curious.

So the saying originated sometime before 1930 when it first appeared in print and likely in the 1800s. (Source)

And when I went to an inflation calculator the earliest date I could select was January of 1913. Which I couldn’t help but share the results of.

About $3.20.

Source

So yeah, about a dime a dozen… 111 years ago lol.

Submarines, much like wolves, travel in packs.

And the one you see always has friends nearby that you don’t.

Just a tankie backing up another tankie there. (I checked their post history, and it checks out)

Thank you for the link it’s an enlightening read that I’m sure will get ignored.

Honestly kicking myself for not having this setup on my last Linux install

Good news is it’s setup on my current install

Sometimes I learn my lessons the hard way… Multiple times.

I only had a couple programs holding me: Fusion 360 and Windows 3D Builder.

Then I found out there’s a functional snap pack for Fusion 360. Now I just have to come up with a solution for Windows 3D Builder.

And the reason I use Windows 3D Builder is for 1 feature: it’s model repair function is far and away the best I’ve used for broken 3D models.

Gormadt OP ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Straight up it reminds of of being back on Windows 7 and it’s so goddamn cozy to be back there

Gormadt OP ,

With the new Apple silicon going on it’s killing Hackintosh by literally having non-Apple silicon going to be no longer supported.

So basically the EoL date for a Hackintosh is when Apple goes EoL on non-Apple silicon with their OS.

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

And sometimes the Windows only software is more “Windows only” and works with Wine

Windows 3D Builder though is firmly in the Windows Only category though. Which is a bummer because in my experience it’s the best at repairing 3D models for 3D printing that have errors like holes, redundant geometry, inverted faces, etc.

@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I didn’t know about the 16-bit support, which is really cool to say the least

I see myself as still somewhat of a noob to Linux

Lychee Slicer (slicer used for resin printing) is usually pretty good but sometimes it’ll still fail

Which basically means I’d have 2 choices, go in there manually with Blender or fire up Windows 3D Builder and let it work it’s magic

I haven’t fully given up on trying to find a way to get it to work on Linux but I’ve had to take a break from trying purely due to frustration

You forgot the best part

Silently turned on via “security” update

A PR disaster: Microsoft has lost trust with its users, and Windows Recall is the straw that broke the camel's back (www.windowscentral.com)

It’s a nightmare scenario for Microsoft. The headlining feature of its new Copilot+ PC initiative, which is supposed to drive millions of PC sales over the next couple of years, is under significant fire for being what many say is a major breach of privacy and security on Windows. That feature in question is Windows Recall, a...

It’s gotten a lot better over the years

When I first tried it (back in 2010) it was pretty rough all around but after trying it again recently due to the whole TPM requirement for Windows 11 I’ve found it to be really straight forward

Linux Mint is really user friendly and is what I’ve even put on my grandma’s pc

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

People in my family are straight forward and blunt with their opinions and how they feel about things. She did mention it was weird looking but she was willing to try it out because her system was going to be insecure before the end of next year.

She’s had no complaints so far in the last few months.

@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Exactly what I was thinking when I installed it for her

I was even able to give her Space Cadet Pinball back (she was a big fan back in the day and still kills it)

Short sighted LTT video?

Checks out

Seriously though transitioning your team to a new software suite will suck at first but it’s worth it in the long run. Long term gains vs short term gains and all that.

There’s GIMP and Krita as Photoshop alternatives

Dark Table as a Lightroom alternative

DaVinci Resolve as a video editor

Personally giving up Lightroom is the hardest IMO, the others were easy choices.

Fridge fridge hamburger truck truck… ??? What’s the blue thing? I thought hamburger would be the answer, but it isn’t? I just get the same captcha with the hamburger in a different place. How easy is it to switch back to windows?

I’m considering switching to linux but I’m not a computer savvy person, so I wanted to have the option to switch back to windows if unforeseen complications (I only have 1 pc). Is it just a download on usb and install? And what ways can I get the product key or “cleaner” debloated versions.

Looking at their current 10 day forecast doesn’t look very pleasant either

The coldest 2 days are going to be 42C (about 107F) with lows close to 30C (about 86F)

When I looked (about 10am for them) it was about 37C (about 100F) with a 31% humidity.

It’s a fuckin disaster over there with multiple days predicting 45C as the high.

Have you ever bough an external hardrive only to take the disk out of it?

Hiya, so am looking to buy more storage and while browsing am seeing some external harddisks, such as Western Digital My Book and Seagate Expansion Desktop for cheaper than the internal harddisks themselves. Have seen this one video from KTZ Systems where he bought up multiple of these external ones just to open them up and use...

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I’ve shucked a few drives in the past but when there was a big sale on hard drives awhile back I finished decking my NAS out with 8TB drives that weren’t shucked as they came out to be cheaper than the ones in enclosures at the time.

The main downside is warranty really and some of the drives from enclosures need to have the power blocked on one of the pins to work (can’t remember which sorry) due to the type of drive they are.

It’s fuckin annoying when it trips

Folders and files sorted skipping preceding underscores?

I’m in the process of switching my machines to Linux Mint from Windows and on my network drive I have a bunch of folders that are sorted with the help of preceding underscores (like this “__folder1” “___folder2”)) so that folders appear in a specific order....

Gormadt OP ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Honestly I think I’m just going to have to go through and rename the folders as faffing about with locales isn’t my idea of fun lol

I was going to install Dolphin file manager (which has a sort option that does it the way Windows does) until I saw a known bug of “sometimes crashes without error and just loses the files you were moving” which is an absolute deal breaker for me. I do photography as one of my hobbies and I’d lose my shit if I lost the pictures I took in the process of making backups.

Gormadt OP ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Plus I wouldn’t have to worry about the issue again on other distros

It’s just going to really really suck renaming all those folders

Gormadt OP ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

There’s definitely more than that lol

Any tips on where to start in that regard?

I heard that Nemo (the default file manager for Linux Mint) has bulk rename abilities baked in but that’s all I’ve heard about that
