Who is Matt and why did they turn him into paste for the attention of surfers?

AstralPath ,

Add Lutris to that list. If anything doesn’t work in WINE, try installing via Lutris. My AxeFX’s GUI now works flawlessly thanks to an older version of WINE running in Lutris.

AstralPath ,

Heart Machine rules. Hyper Light Drifter is my absolute favourite game. Would love to see them expand on HLD but I’m also looking forward to these new endeavours.

AstralPath ,

I 100% agree. Every element of the physics engine felt like it actually had weight to it. The driving physics were predictable, especially if you have any experience with sim driving/racing titles. It wasn’t a simulation, but the cause and effect aspects were as good as we’ll probably ever get in a game like GTA. Passenger cars drove like barges, sports cars were agile and snappy. It wasn’t some canned effect, it was actually down to approximations of a tire model and suspension dynamics.

GTA V feels like every car is the same baseline slot car with tweaked effects to try and provided some level of difference between vehicles. The inertia is bad. Accidents have minor consequences compared to GTA IV. The damage model in IV is vastly superior as well.

AstralPath ,

Gonna have to disagree with you on that one.

AstralPath ,

This is just even more justification to use alternatives. If a mass migration to alternatives occurs, those apps will flourish and more dev time can be arranged via new devs interested in volunteering or outright being employed to meet demand.

Adobe is only so big because of their userbase. Migrate that userbase to a less cancerous set of applications and the userbase stands to benefit greatly.

AstralPath ,

We’ll agree to disagree I suppose. The alternatives don’t necessarily have to be FOSS either. A perfect example of a viable alternative to a predatory “industry standard” exists in the audio production world; REAPER.

When I was in College, Pro Tools was the required software. Pro Tools at the time was a walled garden ecosystem, trapping anyone who sunk their hard earned cash into an environment rife with anti-consumer practices, hardware brand restrictions and invasive DRM.

It cost me over $600 CAD at the time for a bundle containing a feature-limited copy of Pro Tools and a Digidesign MBox.

Meanwhile, REAPER’s noncommercial license was $60. That $60 got you a full featured copy of the DAW with support for the next two full version upgrades (which turned out to be nearly a decade of updates). You could also use any hardware interfaces you desired without restriction.

REAPER also has a free trial that is full-featured. No restrictions at all, even the trial length is unlimited. Why? Because they respect the consumer and trust that if you find value in the software you’ll support their work by paying for a copy. That purchase is one of the best I’ve ever made.

In my experience, REAPER was equally as capable as Pro Tools or any other DAW on the market at the time. As of now I’d wager it’s the superior product.

A world where consumers are respected currently exists, its just not in the hands of the corporate world. The best way to make a better future for everyone in the software world is to not put up with anti-consumer practices and engage with companies and developers that respect our time and hard earned cash instead of treating us like cattle.

AstralPath ,

I’m running REAPER and some outboard gear GUIs on Nobara Linux with no issues so far. VSTs run thanks to yabridge and Lutris/WINE handles the GUI stuff. I bet you’ll be able to migrate without too much trouble.

AstralPath ,

In the modern era, that’s not exactly true. This number is only relevant if you’re outsourcing tracking, mixing and mastering which are all things that can be done in a bedroom nowadays. How do I know? Because I did so myself a number of years ago.

If you’re not learning how to do these things yourself, you’re simply wasting money or you’re rich enough/your band is supported enough to not give a fuck.

The only thing we paid for was album art and mastering simply because I wanted one specific engineer to do it just cause. All in all we paid less than $2k for a full release. We could have paid zero if we did our own artwork and I mastered the album myself which is not exactly impossible for the average person to do.

I get your sentiment, but money is not necessarily needed en masse to release music any more. If you already have your instruments and associated gear, a REAPER license is $60 and you can use the included plugins to create a full professional quality release.

I had a plethora of plugins a while back but I’ve wiped them from my drive in favor of REAPER’s stock plugins, the available JS plugin libraries and a few choice free plugins along with a single drum VST. That’s it. I have pro quality mixes and masters with just that.

The days of the studio as a necessity are over. Studio time is a luxury, not a necessity.

I want to end this comment with a big “fuck you” to Spotify anyway because streaming services are cancerous to the music creator scenes.

AstralPath ,

No it was not what many would consider a commercial success. My music is a bit niche, but it was a success in its own right. We had label support (non-financial, basically just printed CDs) for our debut release and more than recouped the cost and if we followed up with releases it likely would have had potential to snowball by re-investing the money into the band. We only released digital and CD digipaks of the album, no merch no extra anything and that gave us more than enough for a second release and then some. I just have no use for the music “industry” as it were. Music is not a means to an end for me, its an outlet and I do it on my terms. I don’t jive with the industrialization of art in general and I certainly don’t want to whittle my relationship with music down to how much money it can make for me. I get it if people wanna commoditize it though. That angle is just not for me.

Indie artists by and large self produce and a metric ton of them do so to an incredibly high caliber. Big tech Spotify man is not wrong, he’s just an asshole. A leech, if you will.

AstralPath ,

When was the last time you tested this? My steam library runs great, not to mention everything else that runs on Lutris.

AstralPath ,

The thing is that it needs to be literally perfect polarization flipping to protect you. ANC as we know isn’t perfect; it doesn’t perfectly cancel sound and create absolute silence. You’re still potentially vulnerable to high SPL

AstralPath ,

Email.

Fax is not secure, never has been and most businesses are using e-fax which is email with extra steps.

This particular dinosaur actually deserves to be Chicxulub’ed.

Please for the love of god abandon fax. I’m tired of troubleshooting it.

AstralPath ,

Very likely lol I’ll whoosh myself on that one haha

AstralPath ,

This is a decent point. YouTube is cancer if you don’t police your algorithm. If you do (ie: vote on vids, use the “Not Interested” and “Don’t recommend channel” options) you get a very clean and personalized feed.

You’ll know when YouTube makes changes to their algorithm as you’ll suddenly get some unwanted stuff. For example, when any football videos show up in my feed I know YT is making changes so I flag the unwanted stuff when it comes up and within a few flaggings its back to normal.

If you open my YouTube home page its nothing but metal bands, production vids, guitar and drum vids as well as video games, racing, sim racing, science and some other long form content. Its hyper specific to my interests.

I helped pull my buddy out of a bit of a ragebait spiral during covid just by showing him my feed and comparing it to his. He never fathomed the depths that YT would drag him to if he didn’t curate his algorithm.

The algorithm can be cancer if you engage with cancer. If you pick your content like you pick your fruits at the grocery store you’ll have a much better time.

New FPS Built Using Doom Tech Is Better Than Most AAA Shooters (kotaku.com)

Things aren’t looking good for me. I’m a few levels into Selaco, a new FPS out now on Steam, and I’m stuck behind a bar as a group of sci-fi soldiers unload their rifles and shotguns into my hiding spot. I’m also low on health. So yeah, a bad spot to be in. I take a deep breath and try something....

AstralPath ,

Hyper Light Drifter is absolutely stunning and its a 2D pixel art game with amazing lighting.

AstralPath ,

Switch the word “meme” for “comment” and apply this sentiment to yourself and you might be onto something.

AstralPath ,

The only thing holding me back from Linux (Nobara) is that my AxeFX’s USB drivers don’t seem to work. Losing the UI and USB recording capability is a huge deterrent.

iPhones And Androids Can Now Warn You of 'Secret Trackers' (www.ibtimes.co.uk)

In a collaborative effort, Apple and Google have developed an industry-standard detection feature called “Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers” (DULT) for Bluetooth trackers. This standard allows users on iOS and Android devices to be alerted if an unknown Bluetooth tracker is monitoring their location.

AstralPath ,

If you have a Pixel try running GrapheneOS.

AstralPath ,

Bruh, I worked for laundry company in Ottawa. Many landlords were charging $4.50 CAD for a wash and $2.50 for a dry back in 2015. I shudder to think how high its gotten now.

Fucking shit ass garbage company. Boss was a smarmy cunt too. “Walked 10 miles up hill both ways to school” kind of prick.

Laundry is a basic service that should be easily affordable for everyone. Charging a premium for it is scummy.

Steal from landlord laundry every chance you get.

AstralPath ,

Dude, VoIP fax is so annoying. Consumer networks are rarely capable of handling the transmissions well. Its a nightmare.

AstralPath ,

A source link to what you’re referring to would be nice.

AstralPath ,

Qud is amazing. I also found Cogmind to be an absolute blast as well. Love these kinds of games.

AstralPath ,

That’s just how digital zoom works with modern phones. Optical zoom is typically very limited so you’re stuck with digital zoom.

AstralPath ,

I love pineapple on pizza, but the key to its greatness is using small pieces on top of the cheese and even giving them a little squeeze before cooking to prevent an over abundance of juice.

For kiwi on a pizza to be even mildly appetizing at face value IMO the pieces would need to be quite small. I don’t want a mouthful of sweet. A hint of sweet along with all the saltiness in the pizza is what makes sweet/salty pizzas amazing.

AstralPath ,

This is definitely scaffolding erected to facilitate repairs. Of all use cases for advertising, I cannot possibly complain about this one as it seems to be funding the repairs and the ugly scaffolding is being camouflaged by the dressing that mimics the underlying surface. Yeah, its always gonna suck to a certain degree to see ads plastered on a landmark like this, but if it’s only temporary during repairs and helps maintain the building then I’m all for it.

AstralPath ,

I did this for a while in anticipation of my 10,000 Days birthday. I took that day off work and did nothing but play games, chill on the deck, drink beer, smoked a bit of weed and spun Tool’s “10,000 Days” album after smashing a pizza down my gullet for supper.

It was a great day.

AstralPath ,

29ish? I can’t remember anymore.

AstralPath ,

Maybe I’m wrong but it sounds like you don’t enjoy life with your wife so I guess the question is why are you married?

AstralPath ,

Consider getting a Pixel as your next phone, immediately flash GrapheneOS onto it and never look back. Its very easy to do.

AstralPath ,

I’m enjoying watching you dig this massive pit for yourself. Lol

AstralPath ,

Ultimate-Guitar has a massive library of free tabs. You don’t need their Pro subscription.

AstralPath ,

You can download PowerTab or TuxGuitar for free. You can also sail the high seas and get the GOAT, Guitar Pro 5. With those programs you can download the Guitar Pro/PowerTab versions of the songs on UG and have all the full featured playback that you want.

AstralPath ,

Gotta choose the Guitar Pro version of the tab in the search results then scroll aaaaalll the way to the bottom of the page to find that button.

AstralPath ,

Awesome. Glad you found it! Enjoy!

AstralPath ,

Bootstrapping See the Application section specifically.

FOSS = Free/Open Source Software TCP = Transmission Control Protocol VPN = Virtual Private Network

These words mean a lot actually. Pretty basic terms when it comes to the internet.

AstralPath ,

Naïveté. Its not devs that set the price. Publishers do not have your best interests in mind. They will always choose to make more money. They don’t give a fuck about literally anything else.

The prices will never be lower. Purchasing no longer grants ownership. This is why piracy is justified in a lot of cases.

Support devs that respect the community. Steal from those that don’t. Or even better, don’t play games whose publishers treat the community like shit.

AstralPath ,

I’d say that in my experience, retro games or games with a retro design philosophy tend to be more enjoyable and replayable. The nostalgia helps with that, but I think a big part of it is never having to tinker with graphics settings or anything technical. You just boot it up and play.

I’d personally consider anything older than 2005 to be a retro game (or at least retro-adjacent) in my library. It feels like around that time there was a major shift in how games were made; some really benefiting from the new design philosophies but many falling very short of their hype and ultimate goals.

For me the biggest problem with modern games is the obsession with high fidelity graphics. The dev teams that create games without a focus on photo-realism or jaw dropping visuals are often the teams creating the best games in my eyes. See Heart Machine, ConcernedApe, Polytron, Ludeon Studios, Maddy Makes Games, etc…

Don’t get me wrong, there’s plenty of good modern games. The retro design philosophy just resonates much stronger with me when I just wanna sit down and enjoy something. Shoutout to Maxis for making SimCity 4, that game is sucking up the hours lately. lol

AstralPath ,

See Hyper Light Drifter for a retro-style game with an unbelievably deep soundtrack. Fez also has an amazing soundtrack. Both are nods to chiptune but with incredibly modern production techniques.

AstralPath ,

I think the security is adequately managed by the need for a massive transmitter as well as the question “what is there to gain via a hostile takeover and re-programming the probe?”

I bet there’s actual security of some kind going on, but those two points seem like a massive hurdle to clear just to mess with a deep space probe.

AstralPath ,

Thirty 30 second ads? Am I reading that wrong?

AstralPath ,

If this annoys you, try QKSMS instead. Go another step further and flash GrapheneOS onto your Pixel. It’s worth it for the peace of mind.

What are these "bass" and "treble" that I see in an equalizer ?

I am not an audio person, so do not have much idea about technical terms - but I hear the words “bass” and “treble” almost everywhere now, especially in the equalizer app that came with a new bluetooth earbuds that I bought (yes, I am still very much a wired-earbud guy, just dipping my toes in the wireless earbud ocean)....

AstralPath ,

Bass is the low pitched sound content of what you’re listening to. Treble is the high pitched content. Literally if its something that sounds high pitched to you, that’s treble. Anything in between the low pitched and high pitched content is called ‘midrange’.

A bass drum goes “boom”. A bass guitar goes “bump, bump, bump”. Those all sound like low pitched descriptions, right? A cymbal goes “crashhhhhhhhh” and a wind chime goes “twinkle, twinkle”. Both high pitched sounds. When you adjust bass or treble, you’re adjusting how loud the elements in those ranges of the audio spectrum are in the overall mix of the sounds you’re hearing in your music/media.

If the “crashhhhhhhh” is too loud and hurts your ears, turn the treble down. Similarly if the “boom” is overwhelming, turn the bass down. Just adjust them to your tastes and that’s all you need to know.

Good video on this subject: www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6ZF_NHvqzU

If all you care about is money, then yeah sure. If you actually give a shit about humanity the return would be absolutely immense for society.

AstralPath ,

How anyone could think that going so far as to invoke thoughtcrime is relevant in this discussion is beyond me. It should be self evident to anyone that fantasies are a thing. They’ve been a thing for the entire history of the human race. In no way do fantasies compare to creating reproducible and sharable media of someone in a pornographic situation without their consent.

You can’t transplant your fantasies into someone else’s head. Your fantasies literally cannot hurt anyone. On the other hand, imagine if you found out that someone was distributing pornographic material depicting one of your loved ones. It can quite literally ruin someone’s reputation to be seen in a pornographic situation.

Your argument is some slippery slope fallacy shit.
