Personally I love reading novels of worlds that have no basis in reality. I also love authors that repeat themselves over and over because I have memory issues and can’t remember the last sentence I’ve read.
Oh, and I also love reading novels of worlds that have no basis in reality.
I don’t know. She sucks you in with the atrocious writing and two dimensional characters who are all just stand-ins for an opinionated author, but she really seals the deal with the fetishization of rape culture and how it inexorably ties in with hyper-capitalist American culture. It’s really the whole package.
I can’t defend any of that, and I’m ashamed to say, that crap worked on me for a bit as a man barely a boy, in the 90s. What helped me was looking at other movements like scientology and Charles Manson.
Just trying to say, don’t throw someone in the trash just because they read trash.
There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs."
Fountainhead worked on me a bit. I still think integrity and innovation are important, but I bet I would have gotten that way even if I hadn’t read it.
I don’t make weapons, I don’t work for Twatter or Faceboot, I do make an effort to keep refining and upgrading designs instead of endlessly recycling the old, I do pull out dead useless code. I don’t win every battle and I don’t even fight every battle. And very generally speaking I do think if you do work you are proud of you will be happier.
At the same time you should not assume you are the smartest person and if everyone is doing X you need to at least consider that they are on to something.
See? You don’t need a 400 page novel. A paragraph works.
I struggle to see how anyone could have written the Turner Diaries and not have either been trolling or gotten some serious “Are we the baddies?” Energy in the process…
Yeah, honestly, I don’t mind reading novels that argue points I disagree with, but the repetitiveness is unbelievable. One of the reasons John Galt’s 60 page speech is so tedious is that all of the points he makes in it had already been made two or three times before by other characters.
Eva is fantastic now that the rebuilds actually have a somewhat uplifting ending that gives perfect closure. I detested Eva for many years but my mind was changed by the rebuilds
Just watch it through, or the way like from that pic. End of Evangelion is an alternate version of episodes 25 and 26, and the rebuild movies are meant to be watched afterwards
It doesn’t matter what order you watch it your first time around, you’re not going to understand what the fuck is going on unless you watch a five hour video essay anyway.
Evangelion is sorta important culturally and historically in anime, but honestly I wouldn’t call it good, even though it was one of the early ones I grew up on (along with Ranma 1/2 and Rurouni Kenshin).
I have the opposite experience, I only watched it a couple years ago and thought the hype would totally kill it for me, but I actually ended up really enjoying it and EoE in particular stuck with me. I loved the idea that love is born of the risk we take of truly being known by other people.
I will say that the quality of the Netflix dub probably helped a lot. I know they changed some translations which kinda sucks, but overall the voice acting is so much better. No hate to Spike Spencer, he’s obviously a very prolific voice actor, but I think his performance of Shinji is at least part of why people thought he was so whiny. We were originally going to watch through the rebuild movies dubbed, too, but it was so bad we decided to switch to sub.
Evangelion is an experience. As others have said, I wouldn’t even bother trying to find the best way to consume it, just watch, and revisit once you get over the initial “wtf was that” feeling.
I wouldn’t bother with anything weird, just watch the series through and then the movies in release order. It might not be “optimal” but I don’t think it needs to be. You can skip Death, though, since it’s just a recap (there was originally a year between the end of the series and EoE)
End of Evangelion (optional, but recommended. This happens chronologically at the same time as Ep 25 and 26)
Everything else (optional, not recommended)
The OG series is the story Anno wanted to show. Some fans wanted a more concrete ending, so Anno gave them a concrete ending in EoE. Then some fans wanted a happy ending where Shinji gets the girl so Anno said fuck it, sold out, and made a series with a happy ending where Shinji gets a girl. But now some fans want a happy ending where Shinji gets the right girl so Anno gave up on them as lost causes and went and directed Shin Godzilla.
I disagree. There’s a YouTube video essay series that breaks down the timelines and I really like their interpretation. Each Eva is the story Anno wanted to tell at each point in his life, as he grew and became a healthier person. Anno wanted the darkness when he was younger. Anno wanted the hope as he got older. I’ve watched all the Evas and I think I actually like the rebuilds more.
Each Eva is the story Anno wanted to tell at each point in his life, as he grew and became a healthier person.
Sounds like something someone who sold out would say! (/s)
Anno wanted the darkness when he was younger
I still like the OG ending. I think the ‘darkness’ of EoE was partially a reaction to the death threats he got, and the Rebuilds feel unnecessarily convoluted (but the animation was great). Anyway, to each their own.
In my neighborhood, a police chase ended in three teenagers pancaking their car into a house at 60 mph. They perished. All the houses had ring cams. Somehow astonishingly none of those cams were ever used against the police. Curious. ACAB every day. Also fuck Amazon.
Yes, it was 3 AM. They went out of their way to say that out wasn’t their fault because it was not a high speed chase. Despite the police vehicle pursuing at the same speed but one tenth of a mile behind until about a quarter mile away. The kids plow into the house and the cop turns off the lights at that point and drove right past it. Stating they didnt see it. It was under a street light. The camera would have proven they slowed down to look at it. The cops didn’t do anything or report it. It wasn’t until people walked by and happened to see the car at 6:30 am and called 911 did anyone show up. Fuck police.
Same thing happened at my work place. Some kid was drunk, being chased by cops, and crashed his car into the building next to my work. Car crashed, flipped, and caught on fire, he burned alive. They claim he had gotten away from them and they saw nothing. It was reported by people driving past as in your case, but there were holes in police story and evidence of the contrary. My boss had disconnected the front cameras a bit prior and hadn’t gotten around to reconnecting them, unfortunately, so we’ll never know :(
It won’t. The kind of people who would offer themselves up to be killed for the good of humanity aren’t the kind of people who make a billion dollars unless they hit the lottery a few times in a row.
That’s what gets me when people defend billionaires. You could take 99 percent of that and they’d still have 10 million dollars which is still multiples of what the average worker makes in a lifetime. They could still live without a worry in the world.
Since when does wealth be shared when someone dies ?
No, the money will go to their descendants who will try to get even richer than their parents. A large part of that money will also be taken by the state because ?? and ??.
I want the same thing I just don’t think taking what is inherited is the way to do it.
I would much rather see the ultra-rich pay properly their taxes when they are alive.
It’s not like taking inheritance money is the only way to finance things. I don’t see the reasoning.
I can totally understand why someone with huge revenue would pay more taxes but I don’t see why someone who inherits has to pay taxes at that exact moment.
In any case, I think you are missing the point and answering the question “for what purpose?”. Instead of “why?”.
I want to know why it’s more logical to pay taxes when you die rather than paying them in the first place when you got the revenue.
Obviously, the money collected is useful I just don’t see why it has to be collected when it is a time of sorrow for a family.
Also where I live it’s like 50% of the inheritance that is taxed. It is not just significant, it is 50% of the work of a life that goes in one shot to the state when someone dies.
Edit: I was mistaken, I did some calculations and a practical example: If I inherited 200 000€ I would have to pay around 18 194€ (20%)for one taxation and some additional applies but it’s nowhere near what I was told. This rate goes from 5% to 45% for the largest inheritance. In reality, to get a 45% taxation in France I would have to inherit more than 1.5 million euros.
I still think this taxation is too high and I regret that my comment is not clear. I don’t want less taxation overall I just think it makes more sense to take the money over time on the revenues. Anyway, taxation for inheritance is still something people here are very much concerned about. Parents want their children to inherit as much as possible of their wealth obviously so seeing a good chunk going to taxation is not great. Again I’m ok to pay taxes. But we have 192 different taxes here (that’s the exact number calculated in 2014) so I would prefer a system where most of the taxation comes from revenues and what you own and that’s it.
I’m curious where you live? Because many places have laws like that. Almost NO WHERE do the ultra rich actually pay that. There’s always loop holes built in for them.
Yeah, then we would all have so much more money all of a sudden, that would mean we could all buy so much more stuff. That’s definitely how money works.
If you need to marinade it to get any flavor out of it, at that point why even bother? You’re just eating marinade. At least marinaded chicken tastes like chicken. Marinated jellyfish tastes like seasoned plastic bags.
This is the real kicker here. It’s all just theatre to keep attention on themselves while they gridlock the House from doing any meaningful work. Then they’ll use it as an excuse to say Dems can’t get anything done.
Sounds incredibly difficult to reign in a party that is only united in one thing. Opposing the democrats. Ideologically they have no unifying belief other than ‘democrats bad.’ Add to it each one of them is (not so) secretly vying for their own personal gain. It’s a wonder anything gets done with these nobs leaching off the system.
Exactly. They have no plan to fall on beside using Democrats as the boogie man. I found only one of them with a back boned and went on air saying that he would never vote for someone that has been saying the election was stolen. Sadly he will likely be voted out next year for being honest.
I wonder how true that is. Does it come down to effective insulation? I also thought the old refrigerants were more efficient but really bad for the environment. The only other factor is motor/pump.
Compressors are variable and much more efficient. More efficient and variable speed fan motors along with more efficient blade design. Insulation now is drastically better than glass wool of the past. Electronics are able to be integrated in order to provide more fine grain control and overall design has been improved just due to efficiency standards being placed on a bright yellow sticker. In the past design and component choices never really considered efficiency, while efficiency doesn’t always win out it’s a weighted factor and influences the overall engineering and design in ways that just didn’t happen before efficiency regulations came about.
Here’s a good article. From 1970-s to 2014 power use of refrigerators decreased by 4 times. My modern European fridge only uses 270kWh per year, which is even further decrease.
You really do not want to still use a fridge from 1970-s.
Nooo, thats a couple of mW, no way. Maybe its a typo and you neant daily with a bit more than 10W power, even that is fairly low. The last time I measured ours it was about 30W average… (also europe, about 10yo)
🙄 this is why I only date bisexual women. If I said this to any women I’m in a relationship with she would probably say something like, “fuck you” then peg me while annoying asking if I got the pun.
Nah, if consent is given that means you get a horse not a payout
Although apparently horse semen is the single most valuable fluid on the market, so if you get a stallion you could probably get a nice payday out of it!
I myself had this problem with my monitor when I first bought it. It has weird touch buttons instead of normal buttons, I plugged it into the computer and kept hitting the power button and it wouldn’t come on. I was getting annoyed that it was broken… Then I realized I only plugged it into the computer and forgot the freakin’ power cable when I was about to pack it back up and take it back to the store. 🤦♂️
My Monitor used to turn off randomly for no reason. Until I noticed it turned off every time my mini fridge kicked in, move mini fridge plug to a different wall port and issue resolved.
Make sure you aren’t overloading your wall sockets people!
My cheap electric razor throws a ton of noise onto whatever electrical circuit it’s plugged into
How to sort out ZFS filesystem errors
That the bathroom socket I plug my razor into and the plug across the house that the main desktop is plugged into happen to be on the same electrical circuit
I was running hackintosh along side others OSes. Keep in mind it was working fine until it wasn’t. So this hackintosh one day started having a problem. After some time of inactivity, the monitor would sleep. Once it did, it wouldn’t come back up. Only a reboot would help. Eventually I thought it was incompatible with the DVI output since I saw similar hackintosh issues online. I bought a new monitor that would support display port. When I was disconnecting everything I notice that the DVI port wasn’t fully plugged in. 🤦♂️
This reminds me. At work, I’ve had to help during rapid consultation procedures for surgeons while they are performing a surgery. It involves you cutting tissue microscopically thin with a very sharp blade within this specialized machine.
Well one day I am cutting and cutting and I just can’t get anything to work. It’s making a mess and fucking everything up.
I look down and realize I didn’t even have the blade in the machine lmaooo. I was trying to cut with blunt metal. What a goober move.
Never ask them if it's plugged in. Ask them to unplug it and plug it back in. Make something up about contact patches on the cables getting corrosion. That way they can see that it's not plugged in without feeling ashamed for not checking it.
You should reach out to power supply companies and ask them to put some bogus number on the plastic by the prongs so end users never think something is up when you do this trick
I’ve used the, unplug it, touch the ends of the plug with your fingers to release the static on the line ans plug it back in line more times than I care to count.
That is a good one too, I’ve had the same result using that one but also they will occasionally state that their different sockets from the same circuit.
I have a deep fear that the power supply won’t have a discharge capacitor and they’ll get a shock from it. Completely irrational but its deep seated enough that couldn’t use this one
If you ask them to unplug it and plug it back in, they’ll lie and say they already did that, though.
And if they were ashamed at all, they’d have remembered the last time the exact same thing happened.
This sounds like I hate end users which I really don’t. Their expertise lies elsewhere and I respect that. Still, sometimes it makes for funny/exhausting situations.
A buddy of mine used to like telling the users that sometimes fat electrons get stuck in the prongs, so you have to occasionally unplug it and shake it out.
I had this with a person who said their screen stayed blank no matter what they did. I came down, saw the power light on the monitor was off, saw the plug was not plugged in, and fixed it. She was very embarrassed.
