Some Mastodon apps are build different than others - seeing everything in the fediverse

So I know that there are some limitations for federation, especially if you are on a smaller instance. On Mastodon I stumble upon this problem on a daily basis. Here is an example. My account is on a smaller local instance (social.cologne) and in the following picture is a post of Eugen Rochko (which I follow):...

According to Gargron that is the expected behaviour.

In the git page there are countless PRs to solve this, but he refuses. For him it will make mastodon hurt people feelings.

Having everything on LW isn’t the same problem?

The definition of propaganda is subjective.

There is a lot westerns do not perceive as propaganda. As someone from the global south I can tell you.

Time for an ICQ for the Fediverse?

Looks like ICQ is finally shutting down, just as interest in retro internet tools is growing.

People are actually on BlueSky

There's now a decent measurement of user numbers (https://bskycharts.edavis.dev/edavis.dev/bskycharts.edavis.dev/bsky_users_total.html) ...

They've got about 1.6M MAUs ...
& 0.8M Weekly unique users & 0.340M Daily.

That's not nothing!

Roughly double mastodon and 60% more than the whole fediverse (by MAUs, see fedidb.org).

Bluesky is quite "international" with large Japanese and Brazilian popltns, and there's real attrition happening IMO.

Still, let the protocol wars begin I suppose?

@fediverse

ademir ,
@ademir@lemmy.eco.br avatar

Bluesky is twitter. All the issues we have with X now are bound to happen with bluesky when it gets relevant.

The fediverse is the only viable alternative.

VPNs are not illegal in China. And one can use it to circumvent any restrictions.

ademir ,
@ademir@lemmy.eco.br avatar

Given that the CCP monitors all of this stuff it wouldn’t surprise me to learn that if you run a VPN long or often enough without providing stating why that it’ll either end up blocked or you’ll end up in trouble.

How do you know this? I have friends living in China that states otherwise.

@rimu You might wanna update your comment with the info brought by @rglullis. Lemmy devs already receive a lot of hate around here and any little thing end up becoming another reason to attack them.

FEP-61cf: The OpenWebAuth Protocol (socialhub.activitypub.rocks)

This is the proposed FEP-61cf: The OpenWebAuth Protocol. OpenWebAuth is the “single sign-on” mechanism used by Hubzilla, (streams) and other related projects. It allows a browser-based user to log in to services across the Fediverse using a single identity. Once logged in, they can be recognised by other...

I agree, and .well-known/webfinger is already largely adopted, we should build upon what we already have, not creating even more standards.

What can we do to improve this situation?

The main feature i would like to see on Lemmy

Im pretty satisfied with Lemmy, but one thing i wish you could do is browse instances. Like i wish there was a way i could almost emulate being on my programming.dev account and see all that instances communities while im logged into this account. Afaik theres no easy way to do that without visiting some aggregator website. It...
