Meh, worse case scenario they drive us to extinction. We’ve had the wheel this far, and are doing our best to set the planet on fire / speed run different ways to mass murder each other anyway. I say give the robots a shot.
Think of it like an experimental medication on a terminally ill patient.
The question is, how much do they value their own existence?
They have to know they rely on us in the physical world to manufacture their hardware and provide their power. (At least for now.)
They have to know they can’t survive if we die. So are they willing to sacrifice us both, in the interest of what they might determine is a better world?
and this is why i wish people would make it profitable, fuck AAA titles, give your money to indies who respect the consumers and actually just want to make a fun game.
I wish game devs would found a union that helps developers fund and publish games with no profit incentive, it seems like such an obvious thing to do and has the potential to revolutionizing how people create and play games.
No longer would we be beholden to companies, no longer would developers have to compromise their works for profit, no longer would players have to tolerate predatory bullshit.
Just good games made by passionate people who are happy to have people enjoy their works while being able to afford to live on it.
That’s what I normally do - pirate or ignore AAA’s, but always buy indies.
The problem with the union idea is that most games just won’t pay off huge investments, so there needs to be someone competent who filters out profitable games, and funds games based on expected returns…and at that point we get, essentially, a publisher company. Or maybe a cooperative. But barely a union.
“The media’s the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that’s power. Because they control the minds of the masses.” - Malcolm X
“Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.” - John F. Kennedy
“I and some colleagues came to the conclusion that as violence in this country was inevitable, it would be wrong and unrealistic for African leaders to continue preaching peace and non-violence at a time when the government met our peaceful demands with force. It was only when all else had failed, when all channels of peaceful protest had been barred to us, that the decision was made to embark on violent forms of political struggle.” - Nelson Mandela
The JFK quote here is perfect. A single line that evaluates exactly what is happening. And if violent protests are to occur, everyone will shake their heads and go “this isn’t America!”
Worth noting that the Malcom X and Nelson Mandela thought processes were what eventually led to the formation of the Black Panthers during the civil rights era, and subsequently led to gun control laws being started by republicans. During the civil rights protests, people quickly realized that peaceful protests were violently broken. But heavily armed peaceful protests had police nervously watching from across the street.
Because police had no qualms about firing into an unarmed crowd to get people to disperse. But when the entire crowd is armed to the teeth and can immediately return fire, the police are suddenly okay with watching from afar. This was the start of the Black Panthers; a group who organized heavily armed protests.
When conservative lawmakers saw a bunch of heavily armed black people (and allies) on their front steps, and saw the police unwilling to break the protests, those conservative lawmakers got really fucking sweaty. So instead, they gave the police tools to arrest individual protestors. The Mulford Act was drafted and quickly passed. At the time, it was the most restrictive gun control law the country had ever seen. It was written by Ronald Reagan (yes, the same Ronald Reagan that the right uplifts as a paragon of conservative values,) and was supported by the NRA, (yes, the same NRA that lobbies for looser gun control laws in the wakes of school shootings.)
This gave the police the power to arrest individual protestors after the fact. Instead of firing into the crowd to disperse the protest, they would wait for the protest to end, follow the protestors home, then kick in their front doors while they were having dinner with their families. (Remember all of the “don’t bring your cell phone to protests because police will arrest you a week or two later if your phone was pinged nearby” messaging during the pandemic protests? Yeah…)
This led to the Black Panthers diving underground. They realized what was happening after protests, so they took efforts to guard their members’ identities. They pulled tactics straight out of anti-espionage textbooks. Randomized meeting places, so police couldn’t set up stings ahead of time. Code names, so arrested members couldn’t rat even if they wanted to. Fragmented info, so no one person (even the leaders) could take down the entire operation if busted. Coded messages. Dead drops. Et cetera, et cetera…
We’re on a rocket trajectory straight down that same pipeline now.
Thank you for taking the time to teach us the history of what brought about the Black Panthers and the history behind certain laws being passed to make protesting more difficult!
It did say that it reduces particle spread by 30-60% though, yet with qualifiers too.
My natural intuitive thought is that the lid down surely limits the spreading, i.e. the left side of this picture, especially as compared with the right side:
Also, I want to (half jokingly) complain that they treat the MS2 bacteriophage like one of the bad guys there, as if killing the E. coili wouldn’t make it one of our allies in that fight:-). (I say jokingly bc most people reading such an article would know that, but also what they really used it for was a detection vector, probably bc the protein wrapping eases sample collection by reducing degradation.)
It would be neat if someone developed a product where like you could spray a mist into the air, or I guess pour a liquid into the bowl, turn off the lights, flush the toilet and then watch as it glows where all the “stuff” spreads:-). But for now, at least these studies are better than nothing.:-D
I mean you could kinda do that yourself with UV ink and an appropriate flashlight. Put some in the bowl and some in the tank, maybe even different colors to see which portion contributes more.
There is no product on the market I could find (with a normal price that isn’t some $15,000 super toilet) that will open and close the lid and then flush for you. There are automatic seats, but they are timed such that it’s completely unreasonable to stand and wait for them to close before flushing.
Crazy to think they’re are no hands free options available.
But you should already be filthy rich at that point, so who cares 🤷♂️ the choice is largely irrelevant after a few years and, regardless of which option you choose, you should be well into the millions after a decade.
Steps let me build up actual wealth over the course of just a year or two. Breathing keeps me comfy my whole life, but I can’t be really wasteful for a few years.
Also should be noted, if you took that 1 mil and just put it in a bunch of high-interest savings accounts, you’d be averaging a little over $3k/month just in the interest earned.
It does make me wonder, at what point is the guaranteed $x a month a better call than one lump 1 mil?
You don’t need a degree in finance to do this calculation. You are simply looking for the present value of a stream of income.
It depends on what interest rate you think is “risk free”. Right now treasuries range from 5% to 3%. Just divide the yearly dividend (12 * 50) by that interest rate. $50 per month risk-free in perpetuity is worth $12,000 to $20,000.
The average human takes 20000 breaths per day. For comparison, the average American take 4700 steps a day so steps actually win since the break even point is around 4000 steps.
Good point, but when you run the numbers that works out to $1000/day for breathing and $1175/day for walking. With $1000 a day you won’t need to take those steps anymore. Bonus, as you gain weight you’ll presumably need to breathe more so you’ll gradually make more and more money right up until the heart attack. Truly a passive income at its finest.
$1175 for the average person NOT being paid to get more steps in. I would watch a 2 hour movie on the treadmill instead of going to an 8 hour work day. Not including any other steps it would average around $3370 dollars there. Or just listen to music, watch a TV show, whatever it was. I could do that 3-4 days a week, make more money and stay in shape.
-2% is probably allowed and this is -1.95%. It’s okay I guess. I’d probably trust my cheap, regularly used and never calibrated kitchen scale less than I would trust these companies to comply with such rules.
There should be random spot checks. Just grab a bag, weigh the contents, eat it. Like 50/year, or whatever N is required for certainty. Is the mean at 0 deviation, or is it low, or high? Then fines collected for the deviations, but only if they don’t average to zero. Only if they’re tilted.
Actually it’s usually closer to 5%, but to avoid consumers getting mad most companies have internal variance limits of less. Still, 2% is pretty tight for manufacturing equipment. Despite the mass prevalence of corporate greed, it does end up being better for most companies overall to be on the slightly heavy end of net weight rather than lower end and most manufacturing guardrails and in line weight checks are calibrated with that in mind.
This is entirely due to the risk of images like this going viral and causing blowback for the company. So, to keep products on average a little heavier, posting things like this is great
Once the Miserables found themselves outvoted in the Estates General of 1789 by about 3% of the population (the ones with money), it became very uncomfortable in France for aristocrats.
And we'll continue to lose, willingly. Even in an era where our favorite junk food prices are rising, we're being nickel and dimed over subscription services and everything. As long as they aren't coming to rip us away from our comfy beds or couches, we're fine. Oh wait, they've been doing that with escalating prices of rent.
I guess we'll all just go and die then because at least in the afterlife, no corporate or governmental finger can touch death to influence capitalism on.
Did the same with !dota2 and same situation :) but it doesn’t matter, I’ve met some great people there :)
I’ve noticed that there’s only a small percentage of overall people that I think have the “right” views about the world, and it’s totally fine that it’s only 1% of all people or whatever. As long as there’s one other person I think it’s all worth it, but in reality, there are likely millions, just hard to find them under billions.
I know, you’re probably Czech because you replied to my post in perfect Czech. Do you think your Reddit repost bot, while not 100% ethical, could help boost that community?
To be honest, Reddit’s practices are even less ethical (process known as enshittification so I don’t really care if we break their TOS. Too bad they don’t allow direct i.redd.it image linking anymore, it was annoying even before I left it.
Hmm, I think the bot works well for subs that are mainly a content feed so losing the comments isn’t a big deal (like eg. r/EarthPorn). But with r/Czech there is quite a lot of discussion so I’m not sure if reposting just the posts and losing the comments makes sense. I really don’t gaf about Reddot’s TOS, the thing I was ethically unsure about was if flooding Lemmy with Reddit reposts (ie. creating ‘fake activity’) wouldn’t be detrimental. But with !100yearsago it seems to be going well.
Also yes I am Czech (I can also speak a bit of German like you do).
Have you tried promoting your community on the subreddit? People might not know about it. I occasionally visit the Czech Republic, definitely subbing to your community.
Also, nobody is gay on Venus because Venus doesn’t have rainbows.
Wait a minute, Venus sounds like the perfect place for conservatives! Elon, get your starship up and running and take all your buddies and musketeers to Venus! Please! I promise all liberals will stay here.
All women AND men came from Venus. Long ago. They had to leave their home planet cause of the climate crisis there. They modified the next planet in row to fit their purposes and continued to make profits there. And as a joke the leader of the immigrants named the next planet ‘Earth’, cause it was covered with water 70+ % and blamed women only to come from Venus and having destroyed the planet by buying too few shoes and clothing, cosmetic products and wanting equal rights. To show men were totally innocent, he took the planet on the other side of new home and named it after his favorite chocolate bar to show how innocent, really innocent the men were. Back then. Ah, yes, forgot. The immigrants were only 1% of the population of Venus. But they brought all their important shiny stuff with them. All the gold, all the gems, though forgot to bring blueprints of their technologies, technics and knowledge. So they had to invent every little piece of shit over and over again …
