The problem is that it’s easier to buy a gun than it is to go to a doctor.

runswithjedi ,

Please strike targets inside Russia… pretty please?

-Cameron, probably

runswithjedi ,

Planet Money has a great episode explaining this. They’re manipulating the value of the Argentinian Peso and no one’s buying it, quite literally.

City police, run by the government, arrested people. They could have ignored the request.

runswithjedi ,

Yeah, a women’s right to their body needs to be a constitutional amendment. Whether federal or state, would be great wherever possible.

runswithjedi ,

In Soviet Russia, Wikipedia forks you!

runswithjedi ,

He also urged Congress to take action on “the scourge of gun violence” by banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

I don’t see how this would help. What’s to stop someone from getting dozens of handguns and switching when they run out of ammo?

runswithjedi ,

Yes, I can see that. Your argument is correct. I should have clarified, I meant “how will this help politically?” Any gun owner will look at a ban on assault rifles and laugh because it’s just a sliver of all the kinds of guns. If you really want to make a gun shoot lots of bullets, you don’t need an assault rifle.

Source: me, I live in the South and I’ve shot guns my whole life, although I don’t own any myself. I know several people with guns that would laugh at an assault rifle ban.

runswithjedi ,

Who do they think will take care of them when they can’t function anymore? Do they really want a bunch of younger people who hate their guts?

runswithjedi ,

Hahaha, keep going until y’all bankrupt the company.

The cynic in me says this was just the long game for Trump to get Cohen paid for doing his dirty work.

A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting its shoes on.

How these endowments are used is totally disgusting. They could easily use the funds to make tuition free or at least dramatically subsidize the cost for all students. With tens of billions of dollars, just the interest on it would replenish the fund.

runswithjedi ,

That’s my thought too. How can they get away with the attitude of “autopilot doesn’t automatically pilot your car” (my words).

Alabama lawmakers advance bill that could lead to prosecution of librarians (apnews.com)

Alabama lawmakers on Thursday advanced legislation that could see librarians prosecuted under the state’s obscenity law for providing “harmful” materials to minors, the latest in a wave of bills in Republican-led states targeting library content and decisions....

runswithjedi ,

Wouldn’t this also include things like child beauty pageants and pop stars? Seems like a vastly overbroad law and violates all kinds of speech.

runswithjedi ,

Not so stealthy if we already know about. Checkmate China!

It’s more than just eating less. The drugs change people’s relationship with food and it helps them control their impulses. This new class of weight loss drugs really are revolutionary.

Weird, it loads fine for me using uBlock with Kiwi on my Android phone.

Gov. Reeves proclaims Confederate Heritage Month in Mississippi (www.mississippifreepress.org)

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves declared April 2024 as Confederate Heritage Month in Mississippi, keeping alive a 31-year-old tradition that began in 1993. Beauvoir, the Biloxi, Miss., the museum and historic home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, announced the proclamation in a Facebook post on Friday, April 12....

This is an excellent explainer of the mechanisms by which people have been limiting the 14th Amendment since it was passed right after the Civil War “ended”. It’s both a promising law and tragic how it’s been abused.

DC does have representation in Congress, just not voting power.

Check out this section: Does Washington, DC have representation in Congress? statehood.dc.gov/page/faq

runswithjedi ,

Technically yes, because they can sit on committees and introduce legislation. But with the inability to vote, I would argue that they don’t have real control over how the federal government impacts them. DC does still have local legislatures, but that of course doesn’t matter if a federal law overrules a local law.

runswithjedi ,

This is so stupid. The economics of paying people to go to college is super simple. People who go to college make more money and pay more taxes, those taxes can pay for a program that pays for people to go to college. There, done, please vote for my bill.

runswithjedi ,

Giving away food for free?! You have to pay for that!

runswithjedi ,

Here’s a non-clickbait article from Forbes. I like the style it’s written in with titled sections grouped by topic.

runswithjedi ,

Maybe the original bill was about “fetal personhood” but the current version sounds more like welfare for pregnancy. Being able to recoup costs of pregnancy after giving birth sounds like a great idea. Although we should have universal healthcare with no cost in the first place, but this is a step in the right direction.

I had to double check the source on this one. I thought for sure it was The Onion.

Maybe wear headphones when discussing confidential info? But also, the guy willingly put her job in jeopardy. What a jerk.

runswithjedi ,

Envelope based budgeting was the solution for me. First I used Simple’s goals and now I use You Need a Budget. I also use a spreadsheet to split my check so I know how much to put in each envelope when I get paid. I don’t always stick to the envelopes, but at least I have a specific thing I’m pulling the money from, rather than a large ambiguous amount in a bank account.

runswithjedi ,

I just listened to an episode of Planet Money that explains why these projects are so difficult and expensive. There are so many stakeholders who have the ability to delay or stop a project that it increases the cost and lowers the probability of completion compared to other countries.

And the same people are ok with stringing up cables everywhere for electricity and leveling forests for 10 lane highways that lead to giant shopping malls.

runswithjedi ,

Thanks!

runswithjedi ,

Isn’t that a major part of the Old Testament in the Bible? If I recall correctly, the Israelites fled slavery in Egypt and God commanded them to eradicate the inhabitants of Canaan, The Promised Land. There are whole books dedicated to successful military generals like Joshua. I’m not familiar with Jewish texts, though, just what I remember learning in Baptist churches as a kid.

runswithjedi ,

Why would Canada listen to Russia in the first place? Do they have a policy where they take input from foreign governments when considering citizenship?

runswithjedi ,

She was awesome in Killers of the Flower Moon. An absolutely spectacular performance and a well deserved award.

runswithjedi ,

It’s the faux populism movement. These politicians say they stand for the people and will “protect the state” when all they’re doing is assuring their personal power and benefits.

runswithjedi ,

The problem is that the US basically has 50 mini-countries who are all allowed to make their own rules. In fact those rules often take precedent over the federal rules. As long as the financial transactions all take place in the same state, the federal government is very limited about how it can regulate those transactions.

runswithjedi ,

Yeah, good point.

Tesla removes Disney+ from vehicles amid Elon Musk's Twitter beef with Bob Iger (electrek.co)

Tesla has removed Disney+ from some of its vehicles amid Elon Musk having an online fight with Disney CEO Bob Iger. The fight started when Disney halted its advertising on X after Musk agreed with and amplified antisemitic content, for which he eventually apologized....

They’re probably thinking, “I didn’t want to watch Disney+ anyway.” Such is the power of cognitive dissonance.

runswithjedi ,

Exactly my point. Cognitive dissonance is very powerful.

Right? Isn’t that the party that was worried about death panels with Obamacare? Now we have actual abortion panels deciding whether someone can get medical treatment. Ugh, this is disgusting.

For some reason, I heard this as Patchy the Pirate’s voice.

Teachers and students grapple with fears and confusion about new laws restricting pronoun use (apnews.com)

Indiana is among at least 10 states that have enacted laws prohibiting or restricting students from using pronouns or names that don’t match their sex assigned at birth, a restriction that opponents say further marginalizes transgender and nonbinary students. Most of the laws were enacted this year and are part of a historic...
