I love the look and the idea of this, but this also exactly the type of thing I would drop and break.

TheGiantKorean ,
@TheGiantKorean@lemmy.world avatar

Yes definitely. I already worry about the container I’m pressing the coffee into.

My two cents having practiced several.

Almost all of them are useful in that they are a form of physical activity. They can keep you in good shape, and can also help you develop discipline.

Many are more art than practical. Arts like krav maga or kali are more geared towards practical use (self defense).

There is also a thing you can generally think of as “energy” that arts may have that often trend to make them not very practical against arts outside of themselves. For example, if a wing chun practitioner attempts to trap with you, and you’re a boxer, it just doesn’t work. It’s somewhat about range, but also the general “feel” of the art as well. JKD attempts to deal with this by teaching different arts that can be used within different ranges.

My one instructor also likened martial arts to technology, saying that they must evolve over time or just end up becoming ineffective for self defense.

The best thing to do in a situation, if you can, is to just escape. Your wallet is not worth your life.

Conservatives are already starting to claim that legit photos and videos are AI, like Harris’ crowds.

Lol, I just read that one.

Not that the MAGA crowd paid any attention to actual evidence anyway.

I did the opposite, kind of - from a Blackberry Pearl to my Cliq.

Texting was def easier on them. Plus it was fun to pop the keyboard out. The slider was very satisfying.

[DISCUSSION] Techniques That Changed Something For You

A lot of good cooking is in technique. What’s something that you discovered or was told that really changed something meaningful for you? For me, I had struggled a lot to make omelettes. They always wound up becoming scrambled eggs because I sucked at flipping them over to cook on the other side (I like my eggs cooked pretty...

The most recent one for me was learning how to backslice when cutting certain things, like green onions or herbs. You typically get a cleaner cut that way, even if your knife needs sharpening.

TheGiantKorean ,
@TheGiantKorean@lemmy.world avatar

Yes.

Also, chili crisp is even better. Def try it.

I think the reason people are saying that Fahrenheit “feels” right is because we use a base 10 number system. 1-10 and 0%-100% feel right to us because of this. If you somehow knew nothing about each temperature unit, but you did know base 10, I feel like Fahrenheit would be more intuitive. Obviously if you grew up with Celsius that would feel normal.

Disclaimer: I feel like the US needs to adopt metric already. It’s so much better.

TheGiantKorean ,

60mph/97kmh is not that fast, though. 90mph/157kmh is pretty fast.

I always thought it stood for user. I even say it that way.

[QUESTION] What are some of your favorite spicy/super flavorful dishes?

Looking for some inspiration, my wife’s out of town this week babysitting he grandmother with dementia, so she’s been eating a lot of very bland, old-white-lady-palate-approved meals (her grandmother once described some jarred vodka sauce as being “too spicy”)...

TheGiantKorean ,
@TheGiantKorean@lemmy.world avatar

Not a dish, but a condiment. I like to make a huge batch of this (like 3x the amount) and put it on damned near everything:

But if you don’t want to make it out, Fly By Jing is quite good.

I really love okra pickled in a sweet and sour brine with chipotle in it. Something about that particular combination is really good.

Trump Considers Dropping Out Of ‘FAKE NEWS’ ABC Debate After ‘Biased’ Sen. Tom Cotton Interview (www.mediaite.com)

I watched ABC FAKE NEWS this morning, both lightweight reporter Jonathan Carl’s(K?) ridiculous and biased interview of Tom Cotton (who was fantastic!), and their so-called Panel of Trump Haters, and I ask, why would I do the Debate against Kamala Harris on that network?...

TheGiantKorean OP ,

Probably more recognizable TBH.

TheGiantKorean OP ,
@TheGiantKorean@lemmy.world avatar

Maple leaves are pretty recognizable, but if I saw a silhouette of a marijuana leaf next to the silhouette of a maple leaf, I’d probably pick out the marijuana leaf first. I’m not really even a weed user. Might just be me, though.

I have been thinking about this a lot and I’ve been wanting to try it with various types of cuisine. The base would always be peppers, shallot, and garlic, but you could go in so many directions:

  • Italian: basil, oregano, parmesan, maybe some Calabrian chili oil
  • Indian: sour mango, garam masala, mustard oil
  • Korean: powdered kimchi
  • Mexican: like a riff on salsa macha

Really endless possibilities here.

Scientists find humans age dramatically in two bursts – at 44, then 60 (www.theguardian.com)

If you have noticed a sudden accumulation of wrinkles, aches and pains or a general sensation of having grown older almost overnight, there may be a scientific explanation. Research suggests that rather than being a slow and steady process, aging occurs in at least two accelerated bursts....

I def feel like I noticed this in my mid 40s. My face and hair all looked very different within a year.

Vietnamese-ish Meatball Noodle Bowl (lemmy.world)

Going for a bun cha kind of thing here. Chicken and pork meatballs with lemongrass, fish sauce, and garlic. Pickled carrot and radish (only had red radish so that’s what I used), wide rice noodles (again, what I had), and nuoc cham. Pretty tasty for something I threw together quickly!

TheGiantKorean OP ,

Cucumbers, and there’s some radish in there as well. I wanted something crunchy in there to contrast the potatoes.

Change grammar so that the plural of a word ending in an s followed by a hard consonant has -es added to the end instead of just -s - e.g. waspes instead of wasps.

100%. Really, just go do something other than what you’ve been focusing on, then come back to it. When I was coding, I would go take a walk when I’d get stuck. 9 times out of ten the answer would pop into my head when I’d stepped away. A few times I even dreamed of the answer while sleeping.
