What the hell is the deal with the Book of Enoch? I get the alien thing because AM radio and the history channel went all in with that. But a noncanonical (except in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church I guess), apocalyptic, heretical book? Why?!?

I keep seeing even crazier offshoots of already crazy evangelicals referring to it (without mentioning whether they’re talking about 1, 2, or 3) and the Testament of Solomon.

Full disclosure, I’m not religious but I grew up in a bugnuts evangelical tradition and remember a bunch of it.

Fun fact: canonical scripture says that people do not become angels. The Book of Enoch said Enoch became a celestial being similar to an archangel.

More fun fact, even less related SPOILERS AHEAD: In Charles Stross’s Laundry Files book series, the Apocalypse of Enoch is included in the bible of a cult that thinks they’re worshipping Jesus but is accidentally trying to summon an otherworldly horror into the universe.

nightwatch_admin ,

It’s a nice read. Admit it.

On a more serious note, I wasn’t aware that there are people calling the book of Enoch heretical. Makes sense I guess, looking at evangelicals, but still.

TexasDrunk ,

I read all three a few years ago. They’re interesting, but dense like most of the stuff of that time.

They are literally heretical though, except in the Ethiopian tradition, because they teach things that aren’t in line with canonical teachings. It’s like the infancy gospel of Thomas (also kind of a fun read to hear about Jesus being a little shit).

NaibofTabr , (edited ) to meanwhileongrad in Two different tankies giving some wild takes in the same thread

For the sake of combating the narrative, this album shows the truth of what happened during the student protests in China in 1989, including the context of the “Tank Man” photo:

archive.ph/7Tdzh

Warning: blood, gore, visible injuries, death.

The lie that no one was killed by the CCP should be repudiated at every opportunity.

The CCP would prefer that you are only aware of the “Tank Man” photo, that you don’t fit it into its larger context. They would prefer that you not discuss the horrific brutality they created when they used their military to suppress the voices of their own citizens, or the absolute disaster that Maoism brought to China. They would prefer that you forget that they repeated that brutality in Hong Kong. They would prefer that you forget the whole thing.

Fuck them.

PugJesus OP ,

Even the CCP admits that some protesters were killed. Wild that Western tankies dial up the denialism even past that.

fuckingkangaroos ,

praise_idleness , (edited )

General consensus is that there wad no massacre on the square. Once had a tankie bringing all the sources that says “Nothing happened on Tienanmen square but PLA killed thousands of people outside of it”.

They’re delusional. There is little use in trying to engage with them. Convince other people who may unironically be convinced by them but don’t engage with them.

NaibofTabr ,

Yup. Spread the truth wherever you see the lies.

Socsa ,

I don’t think that’s a consensus at all. Most of the reports I have seen suggest that the violence started in the square when students were attacked minutes after they had agreed to leave, as soon as they had broke ranks, as it were. The violence then spread throughout the city afterwards as various groups attempted to reorganize in different places.

verity_kindle ,

I will remember the man in the white shirt, quietly standing in the path of a CCP tank, with grocery bags in his right hand. We don’t know what they did to him after that, but he matters. He will always matter.

QuantumSparkles ,

Honestly didn’t realize there were that many photos. I’ve only seen Tank man and photos of protestors. I had no idea the violence was so well documented

SkyezOpen ,

Tankies with a few more braincells than the others will know about these pictures and insist there were only a few hundred killed and most were not in the square. They flatly deny the massacre and instead paint it as a riot being put down or… Something to that effect. I forget the specifics.

wheeldawg ,

Wtf did they honestly expect from you in that situation anyway? Do they really think you would come back from vacation to deal with that? From what I can tell, fixing it is barely beyond a T1 hekpdesk amount of knowledge, just an annoying process. Unless there’s more to it, I haven’t looked heard at the details but that’s the gist I’m hearing.

But unless they’re going to triple my vacation length (in terms of paid days off in other words) and maxing out all my upgrade options for the next one I’ma have to say they can get bent.

Basically they gotta pay for the best version possible of that trip (assuming there was a trip) and give me enough time to take 2 more.

I ain’t taking a work call on vacation.

Bakkoda ,

Funny story. My boss vetoed work phones as a cost savings and at first there was a squawking fest but honestly he handled all communication to us and protected us from so much bullshit. Now he’s gone and no one could figure out how to get in contact with us aside from email/teams.

There is a HUGE portion of this country that would ABSOLUTELY bomb their neighbors if they could get away with it. A civil war might not destroy everything, but that’s only happening to the Palestinians. The US is too big to repeat that travesty.

Seriously though… It’s not REALLY the US that’s doing these things… It’s the global oligarchy… They just use American soldiers because we were the only ones left with any after WW2 and it stuck. The oligarchy has no allegiance to any country or people and would absolutely bomb the shit out of America if it profited them.

I still use single and twin blades. 3 and up are just sales gimmicks.

KnightontheSun ,

I don’t know…the commercial with the cartoon showing sixteen blades are needed for that baby smooth face seemed pretty convincing.

Sam_Bass ,

Well, buy what you think works best for you is all i can say. Anything more than a twin blade is just a waste of time to me as i can get baby smooth with a single properly weilded

KnightontheSun ,

T’was a joke. I haven’t shaved with a razor for a few years. Just knock em down with an electric trimmer. I then keep buzzing all around my head. I don’t have time for hair anymore. 😬

I do think I own the five-blade versions from Costco. They’ve lasted for a long time since I hate using a razor in the first place. My father used the single edge safety razor. Wish I’d thought to ask for it when he passed. I would try using it.

ICastFist ,
@ICastFist@programming.dev avatar
intensely_human ,

I only use single blades. All other arrangements are designed to fail by being gunked up with trapped hair.

I use single blade disposable bics and have no complaints.

Sam_Bass ,

My twin does that too a bit more than the single. So i keep a couple inches of water in the sink to swish them out for continued use. Hasnt failed me yet

intensely_human ,

The 2+ blade setups wouldn’t have to. But they are designed such that the blade spacing matches the thickness of a whisker, ensuring they catch hair. Space those blades out another millimeter, and the problem goes away.

I use one bic for about a year. So about once a decade, I spend $5 on razors

chiliedogg ,

I’ve always found the Mach 3 to be the best shave, but I think it had more to do with the open back that keeps it from getting clogged than is does with the third blade.

HornedMeatBeast ,
@HornedMeatBeast@lemmy.world avatar

When the Mach 3 launched, the women in my family were taking the mens’ razors and saying how crappie their own women’s razors were. The Mach 3 was a big hit.

I still use it myself. I shave my head and the 3 blades is much easier to clean out. I do use a safety razor on my head first to do most of the work because the blades are dirt cheap. About £11 for 100 and they are made by Gillette as well. I bought these blades years ago and still got about 15 left.

I use the Mach 3 to go over again to catch any hair I may have missed. I use it on my neck as well. Those multi-blades are a gimmick and I swear it’s to drive up prices.

I also use shaving oil instead of gel or cream. A single bottle lasts me months, a big saving there as well.

PsychedSy ,

Does Gillette still send razors to men randomly on their 18th bday?

HornedMeatBeast ,
@HornedMeatBeast@lemmy.world avatar

First I’ve heard of it.

But then again I grew up in South Africa, I doubt Gillette would send us anything for free.

It is a smart way to get young men hooked on their product so that they never try the competition. The blades I use are Astra which are made by the same company making Gillette blades, Procter & Gamble.

Hell, I actually did some work at their factory in Berlin many years ago and they were very specific about their name, it was drilled into me to use ‘&’ and not ‘and’.

SovCit insisted they weren’t the defendant, but was their representative; judge played along and refused to let this non-defendant represent the actual defendant as they are not an attorney.

Either agree you are actually the defendant, or come back as a licensed attorney. In the mean time, the court can assume the defendant hasn’t/wont appear and proceed accordingly. (default judgement, bench warrant, or whatever else is applicable to this case)

What needs to happen is they need to stop utilising the property owned, run, and regulated by the state if they don’t want the state seeking financial compensation and damages off them for illegally coming onto their property and using it without permission.

They’re lucky, if this was someone else’s property, they could get shot. Fortunately the state is very open with its property and allowing others to use it, however they obviously have some guidelines in place to respect.

Perhaps a car isn’t for this sovcit if they don’t want to use the state’s roads and don’t have their own to use either.

the_crotch ,

Adding to this, under normal (non-sovcit) law, you don’t need a license to drive. You need a license to drive on public roads. You can drive all you want on private property and no one except the property owner can say anything about it.
