I’m pretty be to it too, and it’s the first and only one I’ve used for more than a couple hours.

I dumped GNOME immediately, but haven’t really felt a need to change anything else and don’t really know what else I’d want to, at least not yet.

I got my stuff working, got colors and window decorations sorted out, and got gaming working.

Now I’m just vibing.

wheeldawg ,

I still need to finish that game. All these years later and I still haven’t been as far as that guy in white that can snack your sword around. I’ve seen the name but never remember it since I haven’t encountered him yet.

Do you use both a personal desktop and laptop?

I’m moreso curious if laptop functions have been offloaded to phones. If you have a full gaming desktop, do you see the use case for an additional laptop? or if most people here don’t see the need for the increased processing power of a desktop, do you just use your laptop and a phone?...

wheeldawg ,

I have never owned a laptop. I was given an old Chromebook to tinker with, but it’s so old and incredibly slow that it’s just not easy to deal with.

I was handed a laptop that has some issues including a "sometimes works, sometimes doesn’t"keyboard and mostly fried GPU to the point where there are tons of tiny pink artifacts all over the screen. It technically still works, but hurts to look at. I was told it was mine, but other than some prodding to see what the issue was, (pretty sure there’s a bunch of dust caked in the GPU fan) I haven’t used it. So I guess I do actually own one, but I’ve only touched one a very few times ever.

I finished high school before dial up was completely out of style, and have only been exposed to “broadband” since college. (All 768Kbit of it)

I went to an in town college and mostly did my work on the gaming rig I built as my first computer, using their lab to print papers.

Laptops were sort of common, but still somewhat luxury at the time. Kinda like iPhones were at first. Lots of people already had a phone, but the “fancy” one was the status symbol even more than it is now.

Since then I’ve been rebuilding desktops ever since. I’ve had I think about 4 different cases now, each being upgraded with different parts a few times before moving on to the next as it fell apart. Some of my old machine parts are still in my parents’ computer now. At least I think it is. That machine has changed a few times too and I haven’t kept track because who cares.

So I’m right in the sweet spot of when phones became capable of laptop-like stuff, just as always having a computer available became more and more necessary. So since most people do most of their laptop stuff during school, and I never had a job that handed out company computers, I’ve just never really needed one.

I kinda wanna get one at some point, if for no other reason than to see the day to day of owning one and taking it places. But it’s just a curiosity at the moment.

I’m totally anti Windows now (recently as of building my most recent rig a few months ago), so I would have to pay attention to which one I get because I know there can be compatibility issues with them. I know there’s stuff like the Tuxedo brand which are all Linux all the time machines, but I don’t want to limit my choices, so research would be necessary for all that.

I just moved my parents off Windows (their machine was really struggling as it was assembled when Win was new) because I knew they wouldn’t be paying for extended security patches.

I type too much and I’m already past answering this lmao

Shut em down. They deserve jail, suffering, and eternal torment.

I mean I’d rather have my entire yard and have no bugs live close to me and not have to worry about the grass. Would absolutely love getting rid of all plants near me except maybe having one little greenhouse to grow some weed in. Insects and bugs of any kind are not welcome anywhere I might encounter them.

What are some eras of gaming that you've stopped feeling nostalgic for? (kbin.social)

As I've gotten older as a player, I have found myself dropping some eras of gaming that I used to be nostalgic for. One of them is the 8-bit era, the NES days. I have played some of the best that system had to offer and I will never say that system didn't have any good games....

wheeldawg ,

Halo 1 was the first game I ever played online. I played a lot of it.

But I was a very different person then, and replaying it now reminds me of how stupid I was (because I got into a clan that was very based on that kind of person) and the internal ick just his a fever pitch and ruined the game for me.

I never played 2 since that was on Vista and I never went back to it after finally getting Win 7.

After that the series just felt tainted to me. When I first tried it on a console it was really weird with the control setup. I was very used to hundreds of hours on Perfect Dark with the default controls. Having a second stick and rearranging what hand controlled what bent my mind in knots for a while. But it ended up making more sense that way (as you can easily tell by how much it caught on- not saying Halo pioneered it, but it was my first experience with it).

wheeldawg ,

There’s probably about 6 to 10 words in a row somewhere in it that says something they like and wish was in a different context, so they will quote just that line.

wheeldawg ,

I’m really curious about the “without prejudice” part. I’ve never heard that part of their “lore” before.

Does it basically end up meaning “give me the rights of this paper/document, but I reserve the right to not meet my end of the bargain”? Because knowing them, this is exactly what it boils down to.

How much blind faith does it take for these morons to have their whole hope seated in claiming that judges dismissing them bring called a “victory”? To my knowledge none of them has ever succeeded in any way in a court setting, so they have no real examples to point to besides a judge just not seeming it worth the struggle of dealing with them.

Although at this point we should be seeking to take every one of these cases there are and summarily deciding to rule for their worst case scenario. Movement will likely die off when they spend the rest of their lives such in jail or under an impossible set of fees that they’ll never even make progress on, much less finish off.

Clearly I jest, but if we could stop ducking these cases and start prosecuting them more harshly, this would naturally go away.

wheeldawg ,

I disagree. I understand the draw to “secret legal meanings that let you off the hook of a bunch of fees, bills, and taxes”, but literally if you look at it at all without a severe confirmation bias then it becomes pretty obvious pretty quick.

So by the time they’re on board and posting on facebook about it then I would say they are mentally diseased. It’s not a very strong virus, so if it makes you sick then you’re already in really bad shape, so your sickness is more severe than most if this is your disease of choice.

wheeldawg ,

I used to know a guy on a gaming forum years ago that typed with all first letter capital. At least he did for a while, I think he snapped out of it.

But in general you can ignore whatever they’re saying. Nothing intelligent has ever been written like this.

wheeldawg OP , (edited )

That never even occurred to me and I used to do this for non steam stuff all the time. I mean without the added learning curve of Linux but still.

I’m gonna try that as soon as it finishes patching. If that works it would be so amazing. Almost too simple to actually work.

Edit- It’s already working better than Lutris. It would have chunks of the UI just turn black sometimes. All the interactable bits would come back if I pointed the mouse at them, but there would be black squares and rectangles all over the place with Lutris and I just chalked it up to a weird quirk that forcing cross compatibility just brought up inherently. Never even questioned it.

wheeldawg OP ,

Game is still having problems even when launched from Steam.

I cannot get Battle.net to launch with any regular Proton version or Experimental. I also can only get it running with GE after version 8-26. (only 3 versions, 8-26, 9-1, and 9-5)

But every version up to 9-5 has the gray screen for a couple seconds, then the game closes with no error message.

wheeldawg ,

You literally can’t, because you’ll be dead by then.

wheeldawg ,

The requirement was always listed on the page.

It not being enforced seemed to make people think that now they have a right to be mad about it.

I just don’t see a case for this upset. What am I missing? The requirement was spelled out the whole time.

All I see is people not reading the not-fine-at-all print and then being upset when the rule starts being enforced.

I honestly don’t understand the problem here.

Now why it was offered for sale in regions that can’t use PSN is a mystery. Those accounts should definitely be refunded beyond the “normal” refund window and Steam needs to pay attention to that kind of thing a lot better than this. They wouldn’t have necessarily known that the account wasn’t possible for them, so that’s totally understandable.

But for those who are in a country that can get the account, I just don’t see a leg for them to stand on here.

If I’m missing something here please tell me. I love using my pitchfork. But I just don’t see justification here specifically.

wheeldawg ,

I’m talking about the store page. Not everyone will see the FAQ, but they do see the store page.

wheeldawg ,

Who is dating these women anyway?

That’s cult shit, huge red flag to even casual friendship, much less relationship.

wheeldawg ,

I assumed this was leftover April fool stuff. Does he really look that good all the sudden? I swear he was just photographed for another story within the last couple months that he looked the same in.

Damn damn, good for him if real.

wheeldawg ,

I don’t know if it was created by the show, but if it is, by mentioning “Dink” you seem to be a fellow Doug enjoyer.

wheeldawg ,

I still blast it out every now and then. That and Banging on a Trash Can

wheeldawg ,

I’m confused. There is no assistant app as far as I can tell. It seems to just be part of the OS.

I don’t see a Gemini app either though.

wheeldawg ,

Interesting. I use it all the time but I don’t have a separate app installed for it.

Standalone Google Pay app in the U.S. is going to be shut down on June 4th, 2024

We are writing to inform you about changes to your Google Pay experience. As we continue to provide safe and seamless payments to users around the world, we are also simplifying the app experience in the U.S. For years, Google Wallet has been the primary place to securely store payment cards used for tap and pay in stores,...

wheeldawg ,

It’s not rebranding the service. That’s still called Pay. You merely process Pay payments with the Wallet app.

This is definitely a weird mix of nonsense and confusion, but that’s where we are now.

Personally I wish it never became it’s own app in the first place. Why didn’t they just rename it instead of making a separate but functionally almost identical app.

I can’t imagine what for.

He is already a footnote. Nothing will change that. It’s better than he deserves already. What will more attention give him? It’s there literally a single person that doesn’t hate him? I’ve never heard of anyone being a fan of him.

wheeldawg ,

If that’s what it takes for them to stop pretending that anyone wants to pay that much, then great. Alcohol prices are obscene.

And that’s coming from someone that absolutely hates alcohol’s mere existence as a beverage type. I won’t go into that here, but rest assured I’m not losing any sleep over anything that makes it more obvious it’s a bad choice.

I’ve always said that I am ok with almost everything that makes cigarettes and/or alcohol less convenient/more expensive/less desirable.

I’m willing to admit part of it is a “stop looking what I don’t like”, but I REALLY hate both of these things, and will rejoice any time something “terrible” happens to those industries or the people who benefit from them.

I’m the monster that sees a smoker get lung cancer and just don’t feel bad for them. You literally chose that. Sorry but you did.

Suck it, SUV owners in Paris.

But really, suck it every SUV owner. They’re terrible in every single way and no one can change that.

wheeldawg ,

This comment wasn’t checked, too.

Yeah, we know. xD

wheeldawg ,

This is even dumber than the morons who think any plate that’s days “private” has any hope of passing any kind of check.

Someone is always going to be the worst in the nation.

I wanna see a massive dump of them. All of them. If you gonna smoke smoke weed. Fuck tobacco and anyone who thinks it’s cool. They have the freedom to choose for sure, but anyone that chooses that is 100% idiot until proven otherwise.

No ifs, ands, or buts. If you like it, you are part of the problem.

Quitters finally saw the light. People who start smoking in the 2020s are just outright stupid. It’s not all over TV anymore, it’s not the cool teenage rebellion thing. It’s not even hidden knowledge about how bad it is to start, and how hard quitting is. Wtf is making people start now?

wheeldawg ,

I don’t even understand why those 3 things are together in the first place. None of those things go together in any kind of way I can think of that there would be an organization dedicated to them.

wheeldawg ,

Man I remember that update. I did hear about it pretty quickly so I never actually downloaded it, but I saw screenshots afterwards of people reacting to seeing the ads and shit, and found qbit to be basically the same thing with a slightly different skin.

I still prefer the look of the old uTorrent (I’m assuming it’s very different now) though.

But I stopped using torrents probably within a month of that happening. Haven’t messed with piracy since, but things are looking… inevitable.

wheeldawg ,

I had this same question come up recently.

A friend of mine was out of town in a store that has a lot of entire series on BD or DVD (as well as movies of course), and he knew I was constantly referencing Star Trek, and he asked where he should start.

I didn’t have much time to think since he was already in the store and had limited time. All things considered, I went with TNG as the perfect spot to start.

He’s someone I used to work with a few years ago, and we play games together a lot. Knowing him (and just younger people in general), TOS would be so hard to watch with how dated it is. If not just the sexist and racist parts, then even for me it’s hard to look at given how LCARS showed up and instantly made all the technology look immediately centuries behind.

But ever since then, it’s looked mostly the same. At least until SNW and Disco. So I told him as much as I felt I could without boring him about where it’s set in relation to the original show. 6 movies and 3 and a half series in, if I counted correctly.

But if he ends up being interested, I’ll have him go through the other 2 golden era shows before going back for TOS.

Except I will have him watch the Tribble episode before he watches the DS9 episode about it.

He already had a small knowledge of it, the basic identity of who Kirk and Spock were, and the idea that it is a multi-show and many movie kinda franchise (I guess like a STU, which is MCU but for ST)

wheeldawg ,

Exactly. That’s why I wanna get him hooked on the show before bringing that up.

Although we just finished Code of Honor, which is a low point for this show. But it’s out of the way early, so it’s all uphill from here.

wheeldawg ,

I don’t see the downside to this in particular.

Over 50 per cent of users may shun social media by 2025 as misinformation, toxicity grow (www.newindianexpress.com)

Over 50 per cent of users may shun social media by 2025 as misinformation, toxicity grow::A Gartner survey found that 53 per cent of consumers believe the current state of social media has decayed compared to either the prior year or five years ago.

wheeldawg ,

I’m just now reviewing ancient comments and replies of mine. If you haven’t found out already, think of a site that’s similar to Facebook, but instead of making “friends” as the big draw, it’s all about your neighborhood and surrounding neighborhoods. So it’s filled with people asking about where to find “cheap reliable (insert service here like landscaping, drywalling, etc)”, suspicious people seen around the place which another commenter mentioned, so given the very white, very Karen-like audience is probably just a notice that some racial minority person was here. Like I mentioned, lost pets are a common post, there was recent 2 different companies going around digging fiber lines for Internet service, and then the predictable “has anyone switched, how do you like it?” type posts that follow.

A lot of these people don’t know each other, so their only common ground seems, at least where I am, to be mostly just where they physically live, and the fact that they all love Trump.

wheeldawg ,

I did like that movie. I saw it years ago, but every time I tried to describe it to someone I couldn’t think of the name. I can’t remember how it ended exactly, but I’ll probably throw it on when I go to my brother’s place.

We’ve been catching up with a lot of culture we missed out on due to being stuck in an overly religious household growing up. So we take time each (well most) Sundays to watch something we know Mom would hate. It’s therapeutic in a word kind of way.
