“I want to say, in all seriousness, that a great deal of harm is being done in the modern world by belief in the virtuousness of work, and that the road to happiness and prosperity lies in an organised diminution of work.” - Bertrand Russell, In Praise of Idleness

Why? Are people that lazy?

praise_idleness ,

I just don’t see this as a QoL update that’s all…

praise_idleness ,

annas archive is the only source for me atm

praise_idleness ,

I’d rather have to avoid malware than to live in Apple’s version of heaven where I can’t do shit with a $1000 computer that I own.

praise_idleness ,

f-droid, termux, new rom if you want that… not paying $100/y just to install an app you developed(I know you can do that without paying but it’s not without major hassle)

praise_idleness ,

Yeah and it sucks that they are how they are. iOS is a nice OS and iPhone is a damn good device. But these things are just deal breaker for me.

praise_idleness ,

Wonder what their parents were doing for an hour.

Spectre of communism has led a lot of innocent soul as well. Very fitting.

I wouldn’t mind sitting through an ad or possibly another one mid-video.

Small issue with that for me is that their ads are privacy nightmare but what isn’t these days…

Biggest issue is that their ads are ridiculously annoying and so inappropriate. They just don’t even try. They are sexist, fraudulent, and often times plain illegal.

So unless they fix these issues, I won’t watch them without ads blocked.

praise_idleness ,

Their ads not just suck. They are oftentimes sexist, fraudulent, disgusting and a huge privacy concern.

praise_idleness ,

Seriously. YouTube is at its current place because it actually didn’t suck ass.

Ridiculous market value news aside, I thought their AI thing was pretty underwhelming.

This Hacker Tool Extracts All the Data Collected by Windows’ New Recall AI (www.wired.com)

When Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed the new Windows AI tool that can answer questions about your web browsing and laptop use, he said one of the “magical” things about it was that the data doesn’t leave your laptop; the Windows Recall system takes screenshots of your activity every five seconds and saves them on the...

praise_idleness ,

Hacker tool. What a weird name for a software that shows you readily accessible data to the user.

praise_idleness ,

Seriously. I fail to understand how she would think otherwise.

praise_idleness ,

It’s Texan monster, not small pineapple.

praise_idleness ,

If this is a mistake that they made, they’re not smart. If anything, they super dumb.

They’re evil.

praise_idleness ,

Because that will definitely not make people be more against them!

praise_idleness ,

In Korean, answering call has a very specific phrase 여보세요. It means look here but the phrase is now only and solely used when answering call.

Car isn’t much safer if we count all the factors.

Acupuncture is amazing. I live in South Korea where acupuncture is a very common practice and it downright works. I don’t know well enough to say this but I seriously doubt that while there’s no doubt it plays a big role in its effectiveness but it’s definitely more than just placebo effect. It definitely does something.

praise_idleness , (edited )

There’s a very famous case of frostbite so bad that the doctors insisted that the patient needed amputation(severance? Not sure how you say cutting off toes) but a traditional Korean doctor cured it only with acupuncture and some herbal medicine. The patient recently made an interview about it as well. I was able to find this related paper as well.

Still not sure if this can be achieved only with some form of placebo. Guess I am too familiar with the idea of acupuncture being real?

edit: was just curious. Thanks for the input!

praise_idleness ,

It’s not only cost ineffetive but also less environmental option.

praise_idleness ,

Is this possible but humans? You know, by some weird conditions or something?

praise_idleness ,

People still use magnetic tapes to store stuff. New standards are being made. Just because something is clearly better in a way doesn’t mean that it will make everything well he obsolete, especially when we’re talking about soldered RAM…

praise_idleness ,

What would you consider not to be a shithole? You’re not helping anyone and totally ridiculous.

praise_idleness ,

I’d rather work than to be forced to post something on vacation.

praise_idleness ,

Apparently that’s what makes something legal/illegal. Whether it pleases corporate shitholes.

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek surprised by how much laying off 1,500 employees negatively affected the streaming giant’s operations (fortune.com)

When Spotify announced its largest-ever round of layoffs in December, CEO Daniel Ek hailed a new age of efficiency at the streaming giant. But four months on, it seems he and his executives weren’t prepared for how tough filling in for 1,500 axed workers would be....

praise_idleness ,

Well no shit. If you have zero problems after firing 1500 people at once, that means you were being a terrible manager this whole time.

praise_idleness ,

Ever seen this?

This is the reason why this ban is much needed. Tiktok is literally propaganda machine. If they can be this overt, what wouldn’t they do?

praise_idleness ,

I do not want to be slightest of a Meta/Reddit advocate but domestic companies making political statements/actions, although I persoanlly do not agree, is far different from foreign captial, especially considering where the originating country is.

I’m not even US citizen but what they did was really concerning.

Forcing the sale of one company doesn’t do much but get it out of China’s hands (which… okay fine, this is probably good. We wouldn’t be in this scenario in the first place if congress could do anything to put more control in consumer’s hands in regards to their privacy/content).

fully agree.

praise_idleness ,

Both can be wrong but something can be more wrong.

Windows 11 Start menu ads are now rolling out to everyone (www.theverge.com)

Microsoft is starting to enable ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11 for all users. After testing these briefly with Windows Insiders earlier this month, Microsoft has started to distribute update KB5036980 to Windows 11 users this week, which includes “recommendations” for apps from the Microsoft Store in the Start menu....

praise_idleness ,

That’s disgusting.

I think it’s safe to say that over 99% of custom built pc doesn’t run on proper windows license

praise_idleness ,

I came up with that figure knowing that there are much more 3rd world country people who can’t afford proper PC let alone windows license.

Honestly, considering China/India, I think my figure has to go higher than not.

praise_idleness ,

Which is why I specifically mentioned custom built pc

praise_idleness ,

37% is very hard to believe with custom built PC. I don’t think more than 90% of all PCs are pirated windows machine. That can’t be. Plently of OEMs and laptops alone will break that number.

praise_idleness ,

I meant in a way that most of the people who would actually care to know what an operating system is will be against paying for it.

praise_idleness ,

It’s as if they really did all what those conspiracy nutjobs are saying…

I wish I had the same brainless high hope for something.
