I understand completely. I believe my speed is 175/10, so although the download is great, the upload is rather pitiful. Even with PF, I still get maybe a total upload of anywhere from 500 KiB/s–1 MiB/s according to qBittorrent.

Something you shouldn’t use. UPnP means programs can open ports automatically without your input which is a big security risk.

EveryMuffinIsNowEncrypted ,
@EveryMuffinIsNowEncrypted@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I don’t know what that is. Sorry.

ayushnix ,
@ayushnix@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Not only is UPnP a security risk, it’ll work only if a user has an IP that can expose ports. IPv4 addresses are becoming rarer on home networks and CGNAT connections can’t expose ports even if one turns on UPnP.

PM_Your_Nudes_Please , (edited )

UPnP is widely considered to be a significant security risk, just FYI. Because it allows any random device on your network to poke holes in your firewall whenever they want. You should go disable it on your router.

Plus UPnP doesn’t work in a lot of configurations. CGNAT, for instance, blocks UPnP.

dhork , to nostupidquestions in How did people tell time at night before clocks?

The stars have a very predictable pattern to them, ancient people had nothing better to do at night than look up, and since there was no light pollution it was quite a show.

Depending on the time of year, some constellations would be visible all night and move across the sky. That’s where the original Zodiac signs came from.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

This past winter, I started using Orion as a clock while I was out walking the dogs in the evenings. Got pretty good and could guesstimate the time to within about 30 minutes.

That only works until about 3 am or so, but if I was out more often that late, I could probably just pick a different constellation.

frostysauce ,

How long do you spend walking your dogs!? Just look at the clock when you go out and won’t you still be accurate to within 30 minutes when you get back?

ptz , (edited )
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Ha, I phrased it poorly.

What I meant was that I started noticing Orion’s position in the sky at certain relatively fixed times. After a while, I could just look at where it was, relative to the horizon, and determine the current time within about 30 minutes (between about 5:30 PM and 3 AM when it’s above the horizon here)

kent_eh ,

could guesstimate the time to within about 30 minutes.

Which is more than precise enough for the people in the time OP is asking about.

AbouBenAdhem ,

It’s actually easier to tell the time using the stars rather than the sun, because the elevation of the sun is hard to estimate without using a device like a sundial; but there are always stars near enough to the horizon that their elevation can be estimated with the unaided eye.

Thief_of_Crows ,

Wouldn’t I have to know where stars usually are in order to know the time at night? With the sun all I need is to know which is west vs east.

dustyData ,

In theory, yes. In practice, you only have to watch the first night, pick a recognizable star pattern. Follow it across the sky during the night and from then on you can use that first read as your reference. Specific stars, their names or whatever is irrelevant as long as you can find the same group of stars every night. Without light pollution it is trivially easier as far more stars are visible and constellations are obvious.

snooggums ,
@snooggums@midwest.social avatar

Without light pollution most people can identify the stars with a few nights practice.

Flax_vert ,

Things like Orion and Ursa Major are dead easy. Cassiopeia isn’t hard either. And then with less light pollution you have Andromeda and such.

I just feel sorry for the child whose peers are getting practice in basic life skills that she won’t have the opportunity to because her dad thinks he knows better than her teachers and the curriculum. His own ego is so wrapped up in his child writing a good essay and showing ‘critical thinking’ that he’s not letting her do her own work. He admits to cheating. Snoopy , (edited ) to linux in Is there a downside to Flatpak?
@Snoopy@jlai.lu avatar

There is some drawback. The main one : app can’t communicate with each other.

Example firefox and his extension keepass. As keepass can’t communicate with firefox, you have to open both apps and switch their windows.

You can use flatseal to manage communication between apps but that’s not an easy process and may prove a security issue if you don’t understand the technical jargon.

Fal ,

There basically is. Your W2 gives you all the info about how much was withheld, and you can simply verify that it’s right or not.

HeartyBeast ,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

If you drive with Uber or something similar in Australia, I’m pretty sure you will be classified as self employed. I doubt Uber is your “employer”

Solemarc ,

Your completely correct but Google also tells me that, at least in the case of Uber, it will calculate the tax for the ride and you just have to report it to the government at the end of the month. Also there are some really cheap accountants you can use over here and I’m sure they exist overseas as well, but I suppose I don’t know OP’s financial situation and neither of these are free.

Maggoty ,

Eh, as a rideshare driver you have a code conduct, rules about how to give rides, a dress code, a vehicle requirement (age, cleanliness, paint color, etc), and an agreement to be exclusive. (Yes all of those multi app drivers are breaking the rules.)

Just having the ultimate flex schedule isn’t really enough to say you’re independent.

HeartyBeast ,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

Are you absolutely sure rage the Uber driver comtract requires exclusivity in Australia? That would five substantially different to the other countries it operates in - and I would expect that any such requirement would lead the tax authorities to put them squarely in the ‘employer’ category

Maggoty ,

Huh, TIL that there are countries that tech companies actually follow the laws in? In the US, they just do whatever they want.

I’m jealous.

HeartyBeast ,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

Seems like they follow the law as voted for https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-64947695#

Maggoty ,

The law that Uber voted for yes. Drivers were extremely against it but Uber and Lyft have marketing budgets that drivers don’t.

The thing is, just by existing law before that they should be employees. The only thing they actually get towards independence is the ultimate flex hours. Which isn’t enough to be an independent contractor in any other industry. By federal law gig workers should be employees. But the government is bought and paid for. So Uber and Lyft and Amazon and UPS and FEDEX and the trucking industry all get to pretend their drivers aren’t employees.

It could be worse, at least Uber and Lyft don’t require you to buy the vehicle from them and they largely look the other way if you take rides from the other one. Trucking is far worse.

Maggoty ,

Yup. Especially because the IRS knows how much most of us are making. (If you’re not completely in cash in the black market the IRS knows.) Your employer reports your earnings to the IRS.

Incredibly we have this system because the private tax preparation business has lobbied to make it hard to pay your taxes.

I know I could, but many of the communities I follow, are on lemmy.world. So that doesn’t mitigate the issue.

netburnr ,
@netburnr@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t think you understand how a federated system works based on that comment.

beetus ,

If the instance that hosts those communities goes down or struggles to stay afloat won’t it struggle to federate its content outside its own network?

If I join another instance and lemmy.world is down, it’s not like I can see the communities on lemmy.world.

Joining another instance as a user doesn’t solve the problem that lemmy.world has bad uptime outside of the scope of reducing the load on LW itself

netburnr ,
@netburnr@lemmy.world avatar

Federation takes almost no server load. It’d all the people loading images and comment threads that cause the server to slow down. Yes federation can break, especially due to unexpected code changes, but typically using a federated, lower user count site helps over all.

beetus ,

So what changed with Lemmy then? A few months back when I joined the ecosystem many instances including LW were unreachable for many hours a day. Joining up to a new instance didn’t make LW content appear (as they were offline).

The issues today feel largely the same as a user, though less frequent. Am I misunderstanding?

netburnr ,
@netburnr@lemmy.world avatar

0.19.1 has a problem that causes higher than expected server load, as illustrated in my first post showing their utilization graphs.

I told my manager I'd clean it if he'd still give me the employee discount after I was gone. "Done". That's when I knew it was really bad.

When I opened the door I discovered someone had ass-blasted the bathroom. I'm not talking about blowing up the toilet, they did that too, but they had dropped their drawers and point-blank diarhea shotgunned the pipes under the sink.

I had a manager try that shit on me when I was working food service, and I turned it around on him and made him get one of his toadies to clean it up after talking a bunch about "not being trained for biohazard cleanup" and "OSHA regs" which got him to back down, and I told all my coworkers the same so they'd tell him to fuck off too.

Sure, though it isn't super exciting. The assistant store manager, Lucio (fuck you Lucio, you fucking piece of shit) was an illegal immigrant who managed to fake his way through the verification steps, and INS showed up one day and vanned him while I was away going to college.

I wasn't sad to see that fucker go, because he had a number of Mexican kids that he let do whatever they wanted, including Edgar who sexually harassed multiple girls out of the store and Lucio wouldn't do shit because "why would I fire him when we're already losing one employee". Never mind that wed already lost 4 girls at that point and one of them was pregnant at the time. I'm honestly surprised he and I never came to blows because I didn't hide that I fucking hate him.
