I recall there is a federated search engine… somewhere. Anyone know what that was called.

mesamunefire ,

I self host with yunohost it’s a good way to not bog down the system.

mesamunefire ,

This latest debacle is making my department move from windows to Linux. We were already planning it very slowly but then everything crashed at the same time…and all our other services worked except the ones on windows boxes. We can’t afford downtime so it was decided.

mesamunefire ,

I personally get nervous when any software wants to mess with drivers unless it’s graphic drivers.

For work we don’t plan on using cloud strike. We needed to get everything up asap and the os allowed us to do so quickly. Seemingly unrelated systems and Azure was all down for quite some time.

mesamunefire ,

You could get a very very old ebook reader from a yard sale. You get something functional and a lot of them act like a USB drive.

Plus a very small solar panel can charge it.

mesamunefire ,

We have been looking at getting gravel to replace our lawn. In a place that gets over 110, having a lawn is just a burden. Im also taking a look at native species.

mesamunefire OP ,

Just found the site: jollyrogertelephone.com

I swear im not getting any money from this company, I just really like the idea. I wonder how it differentiates between a “good” number and a “bad” one? ATM I just use multiple phone numbers for services so the spammers cant hit my main line.

mesamunefire OP ,

Most “AI” is just a series of if/then statements and/or LLMs that try to predict the next word.

It was part of my research back in college so its crazy what companies actually say AI is. Im probably preaching to the choir around here but man it grinds my gears.

mesamunefire OP ,

Doug Doug did a funny cast where some LLMs were the players in a very simplified DND like game. It was very funny.

mesamunefire OP ,

Yeah im not sure what to call suno and some of the others. AI isnt a good way to describe them because theres no real “intelligence” happening.

mesamunefire OP ,

That does sound like fun.

I got a 6.0ish disk after giving them an email back in the day. I also remember the UI being easily modified. It was by far the easiest linux to get up and running with drivers for a couple of years.

mesamunefire ,

Yeah I went from Suse linux to Ubuntu. Those were the only ones I could get discs. Feels like a lifetime ago. Wish I would have kept them.

mesamunefire OP ,

I still have mine from when I was a kid. It’s great. The only issue is I can’t see it now haha. I don’t really want to mod it.

mesamunefire OP ,

Yes and his dish washer video was awesome as well. Agreed great channel.

mesamunefire ,

Personally I think that a tiny bit of it is the discovery of all the security issues in the chips, making the big companies want to use their chips less or develop their own. The MINIX revelation, the security vulns, backdoors, etc just made them a terrible company for anything secretive.

mesamunefire ,

No idea but don’t let your dreams be dreams. Make it and post lol

mesamunefire ,

Yep, I turn off my devices when I’m done with them. I’ll restart my phone from time to time.

Most software isn’t made for patchwork while running. Sometimes even if it’s on a server lol. The stuff that is gets tested quite a bit.

mesamunefire ,

Did you know they still sell dot matrix printers? Wild.

Everything since then has been a mistake.

mesamunefire ,

You have a very strange phone.

mesamunefire ,

I hear you I turn off Linux devices too. Zombie power is a thing as well as software being a house of cards.

mesamunefire ,

What’s everyone’s suggestion?

I want the dumbest smart car available. Like a Honda Civic but just electric. No smart features.

mesamunefire , (edited )

Budget is 20,000 or less. I can trickle charge pretty easy.

Ill probably be getting a used electric in the next 5 years, but if its not repairable or good for the next 10 years, ill just wait. With everyone else getting electric, It will be easier to find parts. Or go more on my bike. I did not have a car for a couple of years, its a good way to keep in shape. But it was very dangerous where I am at.

mesamunefire ,

I was thinking of the leaf. I hear some models are repairable.

mesamunefire ,

I hear some body shops in LA are starting to do it. Sounds cool if it can gain some traction.

mesamunefire ,

Yep, theres a lot of old/new sites for that:

yesterweb.org/community/

www.notechmagazine.com

goblin-heart.net/sadgrl/cyberspace/webrings

All kinds of stuff. melonking.net/melon

Most kinda look like the old geocities lol

mesamunefire ,

I get computer monitors as tvs now. While its a tiny bit more expensive (in some cases), you get a pi and your just as good. Everything is HDMI now anyways…

mesamunefire ,

Yeah developer tools have gotten easier and better. Never a better time to get into software. Even if its just to unlock your own devices. And repair things.

mesamunefire ,

Yep!

mesamunefire ,

To be fair, if you get a TV that has a “Hotel mode”, you can un-smartify your smart tv. I have one. As long as you never plug it in via ethernet, you should be good.

mesamunefire ,

Yep and with docker/other containers it’s easier to set up on new machines. Terraform and other like services also make provisioning potentially easier (depends on your setup).

mesamunefire ,

It’s taken years for devs to decompile Zelda let alone other projects. It’s crazy how much work goes into such projects.

Matrix on Raspberry Pi

Hi! I’ve done some research on self hosting Matrix for Matrix Bridges on a Raspberry Pi 5. Some people have said online that Matrix will be too beefy for an RPI due to large federated chatrooms and information. However, would it still be worthwhile installing just for my own bridges for social media, and maybe as a secure way...

mesamunefire , (edited )

If it was the pi 4, I would agree, but the Pi 5 would probably handle less than 20 people. I have a 4 that uses Yunohost that covers a LOT of services. I played around with matrix but it required too much out of the system. But that’s with a lot of other services running. Give it a shot and let the rest of us know.

BTW I had a lemmy/irc/bookwyrm/mastodon all running on the pi4 without any real issues. Mastodon is probably the beefiest/slowest app, and its been getting better as time goes on. So a PI can definitely work with fediverse apps.

Funkwhale is pretty cool.

mesamunefire ,

Loved that video back when I was contracting. I paid a lawyer to draft up a standard contract and that was the best thing I ever did. Great value for the $$s. Saved my butt a couple of times.

mesamunefire ,

I got a disk of suse Linux from a library book. I put it on my laptop and it worked-ish.

I didn’t know what partitions were so I messed up my laptop pretty bad. But I learned more in that little bit than my undergrad degree.
