Is someone safe if they report income from illegal means to the IRS?

I have seen multiple times on Lemmy that the IRS wants people to report income from illegal means and that they don’t care to bust someone for it. For example, an illicit drug dealer is expected by the IRS to report their drug sale revenue without having to worry about being caught for drug dealing....

slazer2au ,

Why would the IRS need to know the source of the money? You generally don’t have to report the source of income, just the income itself to IRS.

Now no person is going to directly report the drug money, it will be reported via a front company where cash transactions are normal and expected.

slazer2au ,

Yes, they do have balls and that is why you should support them.

GN do these kinds of things without sponsors and generally paid with merch or member/Pateron revenue.

Never buy .xyz

I just wanted to post this here because I want to help you all and hurt gen.xyz as much as possible. I had a .xyz domain through njal.la which I used to host jellyfin, homeassistant, and other basic things for friends and family. My domain recently became inaccessible without any notice. After a while of troubleshooting, I found...

slazer2au ,

Yeah the cheaper the domain the more likely it is for abuse to occur and your own domain to be lumped into that category.

Why trust the one professional who went through a decade of training and has my multi decade history over a group of people who spoke with their professional who went through a decade of training and doesn’t have my multi decade history?

Well if I have a bad reaction to a medication, my doctor can work with manufacturers to also prescribe a medication to prevent the problem, or a more generic drug without those effects. where a group of random people will do the equivalent of throwing shit at the wall and hope it sticks.

Help for getting started with hardware

I dived into the selfhosting rabbit hole once again and again I am stuck at the hardware part. I’d like to start small-ish to make it realisable. I thought about a NAS (Openmediavault probably). First I wanted to do it on a Raspberry Pi with an external hard-drive but then I read USB connected drives are unreliable and so on....

slazer2au ,

It is 100% ok to break your homeland into 2 parts.

Get a dedicated nas and secondhand eBay PC. The windows licence doesn’t matter, no one is going to discount the price because you are not going to use the licence.

slazer2au ,

You can also build your own thing with something like a Jonbo N case.

slazer2au ,

Snacks and bribes won’t always work with those of us who are very antisocial.

Always ask the person you are trying to bribe what they like to be bribed with.

slazer2au ,

Brave of you to assume seeing one graph will change people’s minds.

slazer2au ,

What’s even worse is in some countries the file tone was a pretty good match for a guitar note so some musicians would use it as a starting point to tune their guitars.

Why is End of Life of an OS bad for an average user?

I get that there won’t be any security updates. So any problem found can be exploited. But how high is the chance for problems for an average user if you say, only browse some safe websites? If you have a pc you don’t really care much about, without any personal information? It feels like the danger is more theoretical than...

slazer2au ,

only browse some safe websites

Drive-by downloads exist. They can come from “safe sites” via an ad network and if you are running an EOL OS, chances are you are running an EOL web browser with some well known remote code exploit

General usage, Lemmy

Technical usage, Reddit.

slazer2au ,

Well yea, you turned off the windows search/Cortana/Bing bar, but now it’s called copilot/recall bar which you haven’t turned off yet.

/S

slazer2au ,

Where are you jumping to? I hear people going Hyper-V and nutanix(?)

slazer2au ,

Bit late, the path is already there with Azure Arc

slazer2au ,

MS is currently going through some legal battles in the EU about unfair pricing so it will be interesting how that turns out.

slazer2au ,

Sounds like a 100% effective unwanted interaction repellent.

slazer2au ,

Got to at least wrap it up in some python.

slazer2au ,

It be nice if the spent some of that time optimizing it for PC but I doubt they did.

According to the TOS, no steam accounts are not transferable.

Check your purchases page to see if there is any pii there as that is what steam uses for account recovery.

How come no true use for recent AI developments has been found yet?

I saw people complaining the companies are yet to find the next big thing with AI, but I am already seeing countless offer good solutions for almost every field imaginable. What is this thing the tech industry is waiting for and what are all these current products if not what they had in mind?...

slazer2au ,

Here’s a secret. It’s not true AI. All the hype is marketing shit.

Large language models like GPT, llama, and Gemini don’t create anything new. They just regurgitate existing data.

You can see this when chat bots keep giving the same 2 pieces incorrect information. They have no concept of they are wrong.

Until a llm can understand why it is wrong we won’t have true AI.

slazer2au ,

Until a product goes through marketing and they slap that ‘Using AI’ into the blurb when it doesn’t.

slazer2au ,

Ha, jokes on you. What gives you the slightest indication that I am going up after I di?

slazer2au ,

Yes, in an ideal world, you would learn all the tools the software offers so when a third party tool come along you know what problem it is trying to solve.

slazer2au ,

Looks sketchy enough. No word on a android port by the Dev so I would back away from it.

slazer2au ,

I’d say running the VPS as a proxy or nat64 setup would be the way to go. Cgnat kinda messes everything up.

slazer2au ,

Not to mention they have been hacked several times over the years.

slazer2au ,

Lord of the Rings. In cinema, but the extended cut.

As with everything it depends. The judge can file but unless they can show they suffered loss because of the comment another judge would throw the case out due to lack of standing.

slazer2au ,

Still believe they all are run by vampires and this is their long game to rid the world of garlic by slowly telling people to use less.

I have enough fun as a FortiNet admin. Please don’t add to my workload.

I love how Brooklyn 99 had an antagonist who tried this and he got frustrated each time it didn’t work.

slazer2au ,

Almost, I would guess OP is talking about places to post that doesn’t require accounts.

slazer2au ,

You would assume that AWS would run their own mirrors to prevent this but I guess something has gone wrong.

slazer2au ,

It depends on the who made it.

If your hard drives are encrypted then it doesn’t delete the data, it deletes the encryption key which makes the data effectively unrecoverable, while others will take the existing ones and zeros of data and turn them all into ones, then turn them all into zeros and repeat 3 or 4 times just to be sure.

slazer2au ,

Honestly don’t feel bad. Regex is fuckwit of a thing to learn. I hate when I have to use it and need to lookup the docs every time.

slazer2au ,

What do you mean children’s cartoon bond villain? Wasn’t taking over the water the plot in the second Daniel Craig Bond movie?

slazer2au ,

Directly no. How would Adguard know the request is for Vaultwerden and suppress the 404?

As others have said, you will need a reverse proxy to make this work. The proxy will listen on port 80/443 and direct the request to the correct application based on path or domain name. Adguard and VW will need to listen on other ports.

slazer2au ,

Na, but it is a guaranteed way to having your notifications permission revoked.
