I assume SSH is not exposed to the internet by default on openSUSE? I have not used SSH on my install so should I be safe if I just update?

raptir ,

The best part is that this was added in response to people complaining about it not generating diverse enough people, so they made it randomly add different races to person requests that don’t specify race.

I haven’t watched that movie in years and watched it the other day with my son.

It’s from Star Wars Episode 1.

Google apologizes for ‘missing the mark’ after Gemini generated racially diverse Nazis::Google says it’s aware of historically inaccurate results for its Gemini AI image generator, following criticism that it depicted historically white groups as people of color.

Planning on hopping on as soon as the kid’s in bed!

Just wanted to report back that this worked perfectly.

For any one who finds it in the future - I just set a Steam launch with gamescope set to half my native resolution, fullscreen and enabled fsr. Games run at the weird 1128x752 and FSR makes it look even better but I get great performance.

raptir ,

This but I don’t have time or knowledge.

raptir ,

Why does a game cost that much to make? I’m not saying every game should be an indie, but given what indies can accomplish it’s a little ridiculous to spend $125 million.

raptir ,

Mortal Kombat. I know it’s technically inferior but I find the style and characters a lot of fun.

They’re also doing the same thing with Google Play - arguing that collecting user emails for osm login doesn’t count as collecting data.

The article specifically says he did not get to try ape sperm on human women. I know it takes away some of the shock value of your post.

Ha fair point. I’d argue though that if you never, say, took the steps of getting to the NFL then you didn’t make an “attempt.”

But yeah, in your analogy it’s more like his team didn’t make it to the playoffs.

Albino is only used as a term when it’s a deviation from the species norm usually. There are all white cave bugs.

Is anyone else worried about the apple vision pro?

i wouldn’t normally be concerned since any company releasing a VR product with this price tag is obviously going to fail… but it’s apple and somehow through exquisite branding and sleek design they have managed to create something that resonated with “tech reviewers” and rich folk who can afford it....

raptir ,

Eh, you’re talking what, $1500 for a headset and rig? Even if you have 4 setups at one of those kiosks the cost to have someone running it is going to quickly outpace the cost of the hardware.

raptir ,

I didn’t even think about the software costs. Makes sense. The whole “you don’t really own your games.”

Voice control for activities will no longer be available on Fitbit Sense and Versa 3 devices. You’ll need to use the buttons on your device to start, stop, pause, and resume activities. You can still voice control activities on Pixel Watches.

Wow. Removing an existing feature from an older and cheaper device and leaving it only on the newer, more expensive device?

It looks like she’s wearing underwear that is painted over. Would they have yelled at her were she not painted?

Has anyone tried the stadia controller via Bluetooth on PC?

I use a dual shock 4 via Bluetooth on my PC (Windows) and I’m tired about the workarounds required to have it working all the time. Sometimes it needs steam open, sometimes instead having steam open will confuse the game, and so on. And by default the light is off when connected so I never know if it’s o, off, low battery. I...

I’m not sure about Windows, but it works out of the box on Linux.

I honestly would have considered the Blazer EV were it not for this.

Eh, it’s nice to be able to reliably control my music from the screen with Android Auto.

raptir ,

Sure you can change songs, but with Android Auto I can have it play a different album or playlist with voice commands. I can fast forward through ads in a podcast either by tapping the skip button or talking to it.

Honestly the bigger thing for me is the superior GPS without a separate unit though.

You can’t just install an arbitrary Linux distro on an Android tablet.

If you want to run Linux, buy something like the Juno or Librem tablets.

    raptir ,

Maybe I’m old but I’m really getting annoyed with apps becoming so bloated with features. The podcast integration was part of why I left Spotify. I was tired of having podcasts pop up on my home screen. Tidal luckily is free from this for the moment.

“Do one thing and do it well.”

    raptir ,

Ha yeah I run openSUSE on my laptop and Debian on my server.

    raptir ,

I moved to Tidal + Plex. Loving it so far.

    raptir ,

Pandora didn’t replace buying music. They did not add the “on demand streaming” option until after Spotify was prevalent.

Do we need to go through what autopilot in a plane or boat actually does again?

There’s plenty of boobs on the internet. It’s this weird thing where people want to see as much as possible of the boobs they can’t see.

The person you’re replying to doesn’t seem to be implying anything you’re arguing against in your response.

    raptir ,

They’re saying chromosomes are a good measure for “transness” or “cisness”.

No, they’re not. They’re saying that because a person’s chromosomes don’t change based on whether they are trans or cis that a clear biological answer to the question being posed is impossible.

Like… did you read the rest of the person’s comment? It’s pretty clear they are not anti-trans if you read the entire context and don’t just cherry pick a random sentence .

    raptir ,

You would need to look at the terms of service with your provider.

    raptir ,

You can’t just put your music on Spotify unfortunately. Google Play Music had the option to pay a small one-time fee to get your music up there, but they did away with that when they moved to YouTube Music.

If you’re unsigned you need to go through a service like TuneCore to get your music on any of the streaming services.

    raptir ,

Looking at your Spotify page you will be an artist who gets nothing in this new plan. You have 14 average monthly listeners right now - each song needs 1000 unique listeners per year to get any sort of payout.

    raptir ,

So if Google sold its phones at a loss then Epic would have no problem paying the fee? Sure.

The more interesting part of the argument is saying that people will contact Microsoft/Nintendo/Sony for technical support with a game and expect them to help while Apple or Google would send you to the developer.

How did Lemmy World become the default instance?

World was already the biggest by far when I first started lurking back in July, and it’s just getting more dominant. Before, there was quite some diversity in the distribution of generic communities, but nowadays the vast majority of posts that reach the top are from over there....

    raptir ,

I think there are two big reasons…

    • During the big Reddit exodus, a lot of people were recommending lemmy.world.
    • It’s a general purpose instance. People tend to flock to those rather than more specific topical instances.
    raptir ,

Not really, they set a “minimum threshold” of unique annual listeners to get a payout. If a song has at least 1000 unique listeners per year it gets the same payout it did before. If it gets 999 it gets zero.

    raptir ,

No, they spun it that way by deceptively going on a rant about how many “songs get fewer than 1000 plays ever” and doing the math based on that in the “article,” but that’s not what the change actually was. If you read the details of the change below that, it is that they will no longer pay out at all for songs that get fewer than 1000 unique listeners per year.

You still aren’t talking a ton of money, but if each of 999 listeners streamed a song once per month, the artist could be losing close to $40 per song per year.

    raptir ,

It makes it so that I know some of my listens are just going to line Spotify’s coffers. I have a number of bands I listen to who are under even 500 monthly listeners. Even if they’re only getting a couple cents, I know they’re at least getting something from my listens on Tidal.

Did you know that mastodons were relatively short? Despite being nearly 40% more massive than modern African elephants, the American Mastodon was 25% shorter on average!

    raptir ,

Don’t be afraid to customize your install with YaST. You can add/remove packages before you do the installation.

You’ll need packman if you need restricted codecs for video.

Update with zypper dup as a general rule.

    raptir ,

    Two main reasons…

    • As a backup in case your home instance goes down.
    • If there are instances your home instance is defederated from and the other instance is not.

    That’s about it.

    raptir ,

For the first point… kind of but not really. Having an account on a second small instance still gives you the backup, and if one of the two goes down you can create an account on another instance as a new backup.

For the defederation, nah. I like lemdro.id because they haven’t really defederated from anyone except for spam instances, and they’re small enough that no one has targeted them for defederation.
