Taiwan is its own country. I will never understand why some people outside China insist that Taiwan is a part of China.

randint ,
@randint@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz avatar

just fyi, I live in Taiwan, and people never get into trouble for saying that. don’t lecture me on how to behave in my homeland. now I know you didn’t know I lived here, but just maybe, maybe you should refrain from saying stuff you don’t know well enough about

What does the world think of India?

I am an Indian and I have noticed that Indians are way too proud of their country for some reason and at the same time lack any civic sense towards it, they are extremely loud and extremely proud. We feel like the world revolves around India and our culture is superior to that of others. Also, a considerable chunk of the...

You should try out these so-called ear clip headphones (aka clip on buds). I got this pair at a thrift store for ~US$3 yesterday. They latch on to your ear on the outside and do not go deep into your ears. Great for tight earussies or for earussy periods.

Why are you being downvoted? Is it not obvious enough that your comment was sarcasm?

randint , (edited )
@randint@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz avatar

Dude, this is common fucking knowledge, and nobody cares

The 730 people who upvoted this post do care.

The problem is that lemmy.ml hosts too many popular communities. There are people who want them gone from their feeds but also don’t want their Lemmy experience to become empty and boring.

randint , (edited )
@randint@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz avatar

Usually I’d agree with this, but on this post, the upvote count is a direct representation of how many people care about this issue (out of the number of users who saw this post). That is meaningful.

randint , (edited )
@randint@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz avatar

The solution is to build up more attractive alternatives of those communities elsewhere, not endlessly campaign the existing users to just drop them.

Agreed. Maybe I should try creating and managing a community some day. (hopefully this didn’t come off as sarcastic)

The current fedidb stats, to me, state that 488 people is, colloquially speaking, nobody.

This is a wildly misleading and unfair comparison. Let’s take the Trump verdict as an example. The most upvoted post about this had ~2700 upvotes. But that’s only 6% of the MAU! Is that “nobody”? Obviously not. 2k upvotes is a huge deal on a rather small community like Lemmy. How often do you see posts with more than 3k upvotes?

~500 upvotes is already a moderately large number of upvotes. You need to compare this number with how many upvotes a post typically gets.

[…] is that most votes happen because of a title. People scroll past, see a title, and vote based on that.

Wow, now that I think of it, that is indeed how I vote most of the time.

Thanks, I will seriously consider opening a community.

randint ,
@randint@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz avatar

I kind of see your point. The information we have is not sufficient, and we cannot really know how much of the Lemmy userbase cares about this issue.

randint ,
@randint@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz avatar

I’d be interested in seeing, for example, from which instances the voters are distributed.

That would be interesting indeed! I heard that if one hosts their own Lemmy instance, they can see who voted on every post. Don’t have that for now though.

people in China absolutely cannot freely discuss the Tiananmen incident. Not even people in Hong Kong. Once-annual commemorations about this incident in Hong Kong have been canceled for a few years due to pressure from the government. People who ever dare mention this date - 4 June 1989 - on (the Chinese, walled version of) the Internet risk having their account banned and getting police visits at their door. Even the Tiananmen square closed down “for maintenance” on 4 June.

randint OP ,

Yes, I actually try to consciously cover it with my hands and never let it sit screen side down.

Thanks, I will try using IPA.

randint OP ,
@randint@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz avatar

Thanks, I’ll try out IPA on a less obvious spot to see if it damages the case and if it removes the text. If that doesn’t work maybe I’ll just live with covering it with my fingers. I agree, the “AI” is funny.

randint OP ,
@randint@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz avatar

A rotary tool seems a bit… extreme to me. Maybe I’ll try that out if the IPA treatment suggested by the other commenters fail. I don’t have a laser etcher but I might have some luck if I go ask the machines-go-whrrr-bzzzhhht-keeee-place at my school. Thanks!

randint OP ,
@randint@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz avatar

This exposes GrapheneOS to a few potential users, and I think this is worth the few hundred dollars that Google might get, lol

@randint@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz avatar

I am aware that I’m not advertising for them by asking a question about this here. I just thought it would be funny to censor Google and Pixel as if they were swear words. It’s fine if you don’t share my sense of humor though.

randint OP , (edited )
@randint@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz avatar

Yeah I’ll keep this in mind, thanks.

Edit: why tf does this comment have two downvotes? I understand why my other comments were controversial, but this one too? Really?

randint OP ,
@randint@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz avatar

Eh, I get you now. Maybe it was not such a good idea to censor words on a place like Lemmy where everyone (except lemmy.ml admins) is so against censoring words.

randint OP ,
@randint@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz avatar

Thanks! Will try this.

randint OP ,
@randint@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz avatar

Thanks. Will try this. Actually just an hour ago I removed the period (.) by scratching at it with my fingernails. (I know, fingernails after all these answers hah.) However I don’t think fingernails scale well. Sugar granules must work too.

Did you get a phone case with your pixel? I didn’t when I bought my pixel 6a.

The phone case was a complimentary gift from the e-commerce platform I bought the phone from. Not from Google themselves. My guess is that they wanted to get rid of these 2023 H2 Limited Edition Pixel × Rhinoshield Phone Case Pixel 8 - Black that no one wanted to buy, so they decided to just give it away. Pretty thoughtful gift actually.

The proverb you can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear means you can’t create a fine product from inferior materials.

I’d argue it’s closer to 朽木不可雕^. 巧婦難為無米之炊 (巧妇难为无米之炊) is more like you can’t make stuff without the necessary requirements.

^朽木不可雕: Lit. Rotten wood can’t be carved, metaphorically You can’t teach a student that is too dumb.

… Well actually no. Upon looking into these 3 idioms further while composing this comment, I leaned more and more towards that 巧婦難為無米之炊 is actually closer. Why? Because 朽木不可雕 applies only to humans and it puts more of a focus on the rotten wood (aka the dumb student).

I guess this comment was kind of useless lol but I decided to post it anyway because I put in way too much effort

Chinese police were allowed into Australia to speak with a woman. They breached protocol and escorted her back to China (www.abc.net.au)

Chinese police hunting international corruption targets were allowed into Australia by the federal police and subsequently escorted a woman back to China for trial, in a major breach of Chinese-Australian police protocols....

Kinda glad where I live there’s absolutely no way our government would allow CCP police to reach me. (unless the CCP police goes undercover and kidnaps me)

randint ,
@randint@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz avatar

Pretty sure there’s no way my government would allow it. Sure, secretly kidnapping me might not be too difficult, but my government would never officially give permission to the CCP police to have a talk with me (as the Australian govt. did in this article). I live in Taiwan btw.
