Or even $50 a year with like 5 GB included and pay-as-you-go afterward.

But yeah, $30/mo is more than I pay for my single line that also includes hotspot.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Yeah, it would make a beefy router for sure. Wouldn’t be very power-efficient, but would handle the job well.

Outside of that, you’re most limited by the 512 MB RAM. Adding a larger drive would be an easy/cheap upgrade (though it may be SATA II speeds or possibly SATA I).

If you use OpenWRT for your router OS, you can also install AdGuard and get a bit more use out of it.

If you can add an HBA for better SATA speeds, and have room in the case, it might make a halfway decent NAS (or backup NAS).

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Aside from being a little power hungry, then that should do the job. opnSense or OpenWRT should run really well.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

I read on OPNSense guide it needs 2gb ram

Good to know, thanks. I haven’t deployed it in years (have been using OpenWRT which will run on a potato). Getting ready to build a new router/firewall myself, but I don’t think the 2 GB is gonna be a problem. Have been debating sticking with OpenWRT or going to OPNSense.

Most of my devices I was able to flash it right to it (or TFTP boot the installer and go through the steps via console cable). On x86, you just flash a boot image with dd. The hardest “install” was to a batch of enterprise APs where I had to attach a programming clip to its flash chip and use a Rapberry Pi to burn the image. After that, though, I could update them normally

If you’ve reached this point in your OpenWRT install, turn around. lol. I only kept going because I thought I was bidding $12 on a single Aruba AP-105 and ended up getting a lot of 20 (for $12), so I had to figure out some use for them.

Usage is pretty straightforward through the web UI (LuCI). For some more complex configs, it’s sometimes challenging to figure out the UCI syntax to configure (when I was playing around with B.A.T.M.A.N for example) but otherwise is pretty nice.

The contraceptive pill has caused sex reversal in some fish populations – leading to a collapse in numbers and local extinction events as male fish reverted to female organs.

Great /s. I fully expect conservatives to suddenly start pretending to care about pollution and fish die-offs now that they can blame it on something they want to get rid of.

On a lighter note, the article did remind me of that episode of King of the Hill where Hank accidentally buys crack cocaine thinking it’s fishing bait.

Lemmy.ml tankie censorship problem

I feel like we need to talk about Lemmy’s massive tankie censorship problem. A lot of popular lemmy communities are hosted on lemmy.ml. It’s been well known for a while that the admins/mods of that instance have, let’s say, rather extremist and onesided political views. In short, they’re what’s colloquially referred to...

ptz , (edited )
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

I’m not sure if there’s a solution here, but I’d like to urge people to avoid lemmy.ml hosted communities in favor of communities on more reasonable instances.

Did that months ago; defederated completely when they turned into Lemmygrad-lite. At first I missed some more active FOSS communities, but since then, others on different instances have become more active. programming.dev has a lot of communities that overlap with some of the bigger FOSS ones on .ml so maybe check out what they’ve got.

If there’s a community that only exists there, be the change you want to see: create it somewhere else, nurture it, and give it time to grow. You’re not the only one making this complaint about .ml, and you probably won’t be the last.

Related: I genuinely feel that ml being the official or at least de-facto flagship instance is turning people away.

Edit: Oh yeah. Didn’t recognize your username at first, but I was looking at the modlog the other day from my LW account, and saw a bunch of individual community bans from Dessalines and wondered what was up. Figured it was something exactly like this, and it was. Thanks for sharing.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

TIL that community existed. thanks!

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

May have been my LW account? I mostly use it for my mod role, but I’ll switch to it sometimes and browse all there to look for new communities I might like. Perhaps it was that account and I only interacted from there? (My memory is terrible these days 😆)

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Did you ping in the post body or comments? I learned a month or two ago from someone that mentions only generate a notification if they’re in the comments.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

You can in Tesseract, but AFAIK, that’s the only UI that lets you browse remote instances. Otherwise, you gotta go to it directly, browse communities, and copy/paste the URL into your instance and search for it.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

There’s an instance level setting to hide moderator names from unauthenticated and/or non-mod users. They probably have that enabled. Those actions federate, though, so the mod names won’t be hidden if viewed from an instance that doesn’t hide the mod names.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Shit, so it is (depending on tiemzone) lol Thanks!

ptz , (edited )
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

I can’t see those, specifically, but a similar pattern of mass community bans after even remotely criticizing an authoritarian regime is completely on brand for Dessalines.

https://tesseract.dubvee.org/image_proxy/dubvee.org/pictrs/image/4b1d3476-a36a-4f1c-ba8b-1748c3a7af18.webp?fallback=true

I don’t have record of the comment that triggered these, but when it’s something like civility, it’s usually just a comment removal and maybe a single community ban.

More of Dessalines getting his stanky tankie tightie-whities in a bunch

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

I got the one you just sent, but it was after I had resolved the community locally (and subscribed). Perhaps the mentions don’t work if they’re to a community the other person’s instance doesn’t know about?

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Ah, gotcha. Without doing the math, I assumed it was basing it on UTC or something.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Interesting.

Still, site bans for criticizing China is just as bad, if not worse as mass community banning.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Lol, is that why they removed scores from the API? 😆

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

So I naturally assumed this was a teenager.

Thomas Humphrey, 47, was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty to second-degree murder and arson in the November death of Linda Tufts, 70, inside their Goffstown home.

Oh. Well, surely he’s not a stereotype…

…Humphrey, who lived in the basement, …

I mean, there’s nothing wrong with that (and in this economy, totally understandable), but geez, try not to tick all the boxes.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Or for a 70-year old to think it’s too loud.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

It’s not.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

I’ve thought this ever since Windows 8 (and when I went from dual-boot to Linux only). In retrospect, at least Ballmer treated Windows like a PC operating system.

Ever since Nadella took over, it seems like MS is trying to turn Windows into ChromeOS but for Microsoft’s cloud services. Pretty sure they want PCs to be thin clients tied to subscriptions. No fucking thanks.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Oh, absolutely lol. Definitely one of those cases where you didn’t know what you had until it’s gone.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Not sure in JF, but in Emby I can click the menu for the show in the library and choose “Identify”.

Usually setting the correct title there is enough, but if it keeps getting mis-identified, I’ll set the IMDB/TVDB/ etc IDs directly.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Not sure then. I think Emby, or at least the way mine’s setup, only uses tvdb and moviedb for metadata. Assuming JF is similar. So if the show doesn’t exist there, it may just pull the next closest match regardless?

AFAIK, you only need to set one of those. I usually set IMDB ID since tvdb and moviedb can pick up on that.

Maybe someone else has some tips.

Semi-related, but to this day I remain impressed they got Half Life 2 ported to the original Xbox.

ptz , (edited )
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Right, architecturally it was probably pretty simple. But the minimum system requirements for HL:2 versus the Xbox’s hardware is pretty stark:

Half-Life 2 minimum requirements for PC:

<span style="color:#323232;">CPU: Intel Pentium 4 2.00GHz
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Memory: 512 MB
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 6100
</span><span style="color:#323232;">
</span>

Xbox System Specs:

<span style="color:#323232;">CPU:  Intel Pentium III 733 MHz
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Memory:  64 MB (shared with GPU)
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Graphics: Custom NVidia based on Geforce 3
</span>

Edit: Definitely meaning the original Xbox and not the 360. Was one of the last games I bought for the original and still have it :)

Tesseract, maybe? (tesseract.dubvee.org for a demo; it defaulted to my instance but is unlocked to allow any).

It’s modeled mostly off of “new” Reddit as of last year (minus the parts I didn’t like).

</span><span style="color:#323232;">And if it did, it wasn't that bad.
</span><span style="color:#323232;">And if it was, that's not a big deal.
</span><span style="color:#323232;">And if it is, that's not my fault.
</span><span style="color:#323232;">And if it was, I didn't mean it.
</span><span style="color:#323232;">And if I did... You deserved it.

@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Very cool!

Tesseract just lets you put communities into groups and view those groups as feeds, but it doesn’t do any personalization. AFAIK, you’re the first :)

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

I addressed most of that in Tesseract. It lets you browse other instances directly and one-click load / subscribe to communities.

Would love to see other 3rd party UIs incorporate something like this.

I love that you added a dyslexic font option. I’m gonna have to add that to Tes. It already has font options, but just a few standard ones.

What font are you using for that option? OpenDyslexic?

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Thanks!

Yes, you can adjust the image size in card posts. It’s under App Settings -> Feed -> Image Size

The default may be either “extra large” or possibly “full-width” (don’t recall off the top of my head), but there are options for Small, Medium, and Large as well.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

One annoying thing is that it’s sorted by the original posting date, not the time you saved it,

Sadly, an API limitation. When fetching saved posts, you only have the same sorting options as when you fetch posts for a community or the main feed, and those are based on publish date.

Same reason you can’t search your saved items: saved_only isn’t a flag you can pass to the search endpoint :(

ptz , (edited )
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

If you can elaborate on that, I can probably add that as a feature. It already has that capability, but it’s not exposed as a “view post on X instance” in any menus.

Edit: Added buttons in the post and comment action menus to “View [Post | Comment] on Home Instance”. Thanks for the feature idea.

ptz ,

Web frontend but works well on mobile as a PWA

ptz , (edited )
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Technically yes but it’d take some re-engineering to track which account/instance each post came from, deduplicate the posts from each, and automagically select the account to use.

Not something ive considered though I can look into it. Most admins ive seen who run it lock it to their instance. I mainly use that feature to switch between my normal account and mod/admin account.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Basically, yeah. The app would have to basically fetch and store the posts and comments locally and search its own copy of them.

That’s something ive been looking into since I’m also looking to provide offline support. Just not quite there yet lol.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Ideally your home instance would offer it as an alternative frontend, but the one I run for my instance is unlocked so that any instance can use it. You can also self-host it and point it to any instance.
