db2 , to linux in Anyone else starting to favor Flatpak over native packages?

I don’t like flatpak or snap or any of them. System libraries exist for good reason, just because your computer is stupid fast and you have enough disk for the library of Congress a couple times over doesn’t mean you should run a veritable copy of your whole operating system for each program. IMO it’s lazy.

Sandboxing is a different thing though, if that’s the purpose then it’s doing it right.

ebits21 ,
@ebits21@lemmy.ca avatar

I have a ton of flatpaks which means packages are shared between them, so no it’s not lazy or a copy of the whole system. It makes a ton of sense for stability.

Updates are diff’s so downloading and updating is fast. Not entire packages.

Making every package work with only a certain version of a dependency and hoping it is stable doesn’t make a lot of sense.

db2 ,

You know you can have many versions of a library on your system at once, right?

ebits21 ,
@ebits21@lemmy.ca avatar

As long as they don’t cause conflicts. You know dependency hell is a thing right? The reason flatpaks were thought up in the first place? Right?

azvasKvklenko ,

Besides that it’s only partially true (unless we speak Nix systems) That’s also not the point of it. It’s more about having runtime environment that an app was built against and tested with.

stevecrox ,
@stevecrox@kbin.social avatar

You've just moved the packaging problem from distributions to app developers.

The reason you have issues is historically app developers weren't interested in packaging their application so distributions would figure it out.

If app developers want to package deb, rpm, etc.. packages it would also solve the problem.

ebits21 ,
@ebits21@lemmy.ca avatar

Sure. Except you gain universal compatibility for all distros that have flatpak and aren’t building all the different package formats. Makes it much more attractive for actual developers to package since it’s only done once.

There’s no right answer here, but there are definite benefits.

I’ve had many little issues since I moved to Linux years ago, most of which would never have been an issue if flatpaks were there at the time. My experience has been better with them.

manpacket ,

Makes it much more attractive for actual developers to package since it’s only done once.

I maintain a few apps that are included into some distributions with no participation from my side apart from tagging what I consider releases in my git repo. How is doing something only once is more attractive as not doing it at all?

true_blue , (edited )
@true_blue@lemmy.comfysnug.space avatar

Because you can make sure it was done right. You don’t have to worry about bugs or other issues being the result of faulty packaging if you’re the one doing the packaging. Plus It makes reproducing bugs easier when everyone’s using the same package, and declaring the flatpak as the official package makes it much more likely that people will use the flatpak.

zephyr ,

Yeah, that’s why Arch is almost the only distro that keeps everything installed natively. All other distros either have a troublesome workaround or only support flatpaks.

Rolling release just keeps everyone on the same pace. Yes, they break sometimes, but on the long run it just works.

onTerryO ,
@onTerryO@lemmy.ca avatar

As a long time Arch user, it’s not perfect, but it is perfect for me.

Tippon ,

I like them for the opposite reason. I’m still quite new to Linux, so I’m figuring out which software is best for me. I set up my server with Xubuntu and installed everything through Apt. I uninstalled a lot of software, but inevitably missed some things like libraries and config files.

Using Flatpak seems to keep track of everything, so uninstalling gets rid of everything that I would otherwise miss.

If it’s doing what it says on the tin, Flatpak is making my life much easier :)

DidacticDumbass OP ,

Trying to purge orphan dependencies is absolutely annoying. Talk about wasting space!

DidacticDumbass OP ,

I see your point, and I agree. No need to spend resources just because we have them.

Sandboxing is definitely a benefit, but alas as I am learning I have no control of it’s permissions, so that can potentially go wrong.

arirr ,

You can manage Flatpak permissions with Flatseal.

DidacticDumbass OP ,

Great! I knew it was possible. That is one less argument against it.

greybeard ,

Flatseal is super easy for anyone with a tech background to use. You can very quickly expand or reduce the access an app has to your system. Even below what the app comes with by default.

I do kinda wish the guis for installing flatpak apps were more forthcoming with the permissions, and possibly integrated some of the features of flatseal so you could modify the permission set before installing.

DidacticDumbass OP ,

It does seem pretty intuitive.

Honestly I just sometimes want the app to see a file outside of Downloads.

I bought tickets for a gig recently and the only way I can access them is by downloading an app (that I’m only going to use for this one gig). What if I didn’t have a smartphone? What if I didn’t want to take a smartphone to a gig? You aren’t allowed to go to this gig without one, and it’s a small thing, but I don’t like how the option is out of your hands.

Pretty much every supermarket in the UK now requires you to download an app so you can access their offers. I hate this so much.

amanneedsamaid ,

The most ridiculous part are services insisting you install an app when everything their app does could be in a progressive web app. PWAs are less work to develop as they can run on any device with a browser. lamprivate ,

My family got a new KitchenAid stove and I wanted to set a stop time for the oven while we went for a walk. I am able to do this on my shitty oven at our apartment.

I had to connect the stove to wifi, download an app, make an account, and link the stove. All to set a timer. Even then of course there was an error linking them.

Usually I wouldn’t have done that but I was really looking forward to the walk. I was one of the first adopters of Hue lights and used to be excited for smart home stuff. But this is so stupid.

Wondering if it’s some sort of data collection thing and also there’s no way a kitchen appliance company focuses on security and making their wifi connected devices secure.

So dumb.

d00phy , to youshouldknow in YSK: Flossing your teeth is only uncomfortable when your gums are unhealthy

“Take care of your teeth” is my go-to “old person’s advice to young people.” Once you realize that dentists can’t really “fix” (as in permanently fix) most problems with your teeth (that you get one set for your whole life), that 5-10 minutes a day to take care of them doesn’t seem like so much.

Seriously, once you have a cavity, there’s a pretty good chance that tooth will eventually become a crown or implant. Once a tooth cracks, it will eventually get worse and have to go. Dentistry is mostly preventative, and for the most part they can really only apply a band-aid to serious problems.

Thatoneguyyoulove ,

Seriously please go to the dentist and take care of your teeth. My parents stopped taking me to the dentist when I was 16 and I didn't return till I was 30. I had developed a massive anxiety over it and couldn't even look at myself in the mirror because I was terrified to look into my mouth. I got off relatively lucky but for the love of God go to the dentist

bento ,

This comment hit hard, I know that feeling of looking in the mirror and being afraid to open my mouth. I went yesterday for the first time in over 10 years. I felt so much shame and anxiety, I didn’t sleep well for 2 nights leading up to the visit, but boy do I feel better now. Considering it had been so long the news wasn’t as bad as I was expecting, and it was not as painful as i thought it would be (my last visit was not pleasant) Now that i’m over that hump, i’ll be going back much more frequently and will be more diligent with my oral hygene. I wish I had done it sooner. Seriously, for those in a similar situation, just go to the dentist and set things right before it’s too late.

i’m also impressed they called it “rapeseed oil” instead of canola oil. though maybe there are new rules about that

Canola is a North American thing. AFAIK the British are familiar with the term “rapeseed” and don’t need the rebranding.

canola is a specific cultivar of rapeseed, regular rapeseed contains more erucic acid. there is no good reason for this because erucic acid has no proven health impacts on humans but they did it anyway

Glowstick ,

Honestly, I think thats just nonsense.

Just the name itself makes it clear.

It’s as equally stupid, in my opinion, as the argument that we shouldn’t call a vegetarian or vegan burger a “burger” because people might think it has meat when it doesn’t.

It’s all a play by the dairy and meat industries to make vegan alternatives sound unappetising, and it’s very transparent.

Honestly not sure why people get so upset about American cheese. It’s just cheese with an emulsifier in it that softens it. Best burger cheese by far.

ForgotAboutDre ,

It’s less the emulsifier softens it, more it allows water to the added. Cheese is largely fat/oil which doesn’t mix easily with water.

The emulsifier allows you to melt and cast left over cheese, and add water to increase it’s volume. Its original invention was to make use of scrap cuts of cheese.

How can you possibly say such nonsense when swiss and muenster both exist

Angry_Autist ,

Swiss is an abomination of a cheese that should never have been made. It’s hard, dry, flavorless and is terrible at melting. Not even just for burgers there’s no need at all for swiss cheese in general. P.S. modern Swiss uses sawdust to make the holes. Enjoy eating your sawdust.

breadsmasher ,
@breadsmasher@lemmy.world avatar

Youre american. American cheese is barely cheese. Highly processed, plastic garbage.

Angry_Autist ,

Then you need to try a few different brands of American cheese to find out that the most affordable options often use so much vegetable oil that it basically tastes like oil with some whey powder in it.

Yes there are good quality American cheese offerings, Land o Lakes and Boars Head both have an actual cultured American cheese.

But nearly all of the non-premium brands are frankly unpleasant.

Trainguyrom ,

You clearly haven’t had a burger with a good quality bun & patty grilled to medium rare with layers of cheddar, Colby, pepper jack and Swiss melted on top

Soggy ,

None of those cheeses melt well, they split and leak oil. Sure they get soft and gooey but a bit of sodium citrate would make it better.

Trainguyrom ,

What do you mean by it “splitting?” How does real cheese not “melt well” exactly? And oily cheese? Where do you even get oily cheese?

Soggy ,

Splitting, or breaking, is the separation of sauce, cheese, or other emulsion. As a milk product, cheese is a mixture of water, oil, and protein (and some sugars, fungus, coloring agents, details vary). Heat causes those elements to “split” and is the reason you can’t make a cheese sauce without some kind of emulsifier.

Premium American cheese, labeled “pasteurized process American cheese”, is mostly traditional cheese by weight (usually cheddar, often with Colby or others mixed in) with salt, color, emulsifier, citric acid, and up to 5% added dairy fat. That’s all the same stuff traditional cheese has except for the emulsifier (commonly sodium citrate or phosphate) which keeps it from separating as it melts.

Also all cheese is a “processed food” before anyone gets riled up about the terminology.

Angry_Autist ,

Actually Canola is a stupid Canadian thing thought up so they could sell it to stupid Americans.

Trainguyrom ,

"american cheese” that has “pasteurized processed cheese product” in fine print. or “ice cream” with “frozen dairy product” in fine print

Maybe this is just because I live in Wisconsin where the dairy and alcohol lobbies are both extremely strong, but most not-icecream is labeled as a “frozen desert” and those terrible plastic Impersonations of cheese also aren’t labeled as cheese at all.

Granted the graphic design does a ton of the heavy lifting. On the “frozen desert” it shows a scoop of ice cream in decidedly ice cream like packaging and says the flavor really huge, then in much smaller print below that “frozen desert” and I think Kraft Singles just shows a picture of cheese and the branding without actually specifying what the product is

starshipwinepineapple , to selfhosted in Forgot to pay my domain for a year and now I have to spend £2200 ($3000) if I want to get it back

tldr - lesson learned. buy a new domain and move over to it.

but for those who want to learn something new - you are only renting your domains. If you fail to pay by the registration date then you generally get a grace period to pay more money to renew it. If you fail to pay before that period expires then the domain will be released. Some companies like godaddy will automatically buy the domain for another year (or more). But even if Godaddy doesn’t then it still goes up on a list of expiring domains and there are backorder services that will try to buy the domain or auction them off.

So in the end it doesn’t really matter what registrar you use. If you do not pay, it goes back to a list where people can see it is expiring and then you’ll get some people who either want to legitimately use that domain or more likely they are wanting to try to sell it to you or someone else for more than they buy it for.

And I saw someone mention file a complaint. I’m sorry to say that if you did not have money to renew the domain then you aren’t going to be able to do that either. This is called Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) and the fee is between $1500-4000 for 1 to 5 domains.. Additionally, just because you file a complaint does not mean the issue will be resolved favorably or timely. These complaints can last years, and there is no guarantee you will get the domain back.

This is why you should always pay your domain rental fee. And if you don’t, then you need to either be willing to pay a ton of money to get it back or you will need to move on. Sorry its a tough lesson to learn but if you’re just a student then you probably weren’t using this to run a business or anything so in the end you are quite fortunate.

    How does one link a specific blocked comment in the mod log? I don’t see any way to do this?

    gedaliyah ,
    @gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

    I am not sure that you can link to an individual comment, but you can link to the community mod log or the user mod log depending on the circumstance. Or you can link to the individual comment in the thread, even if it has been removed.

    It is preferred to reach out to a moderator(s) by direct message, in which case you could include a screen image of the mod log along with your question.

    I understand why one may have an interest in asking questions publicly, although it makes is very difficult for mods to respond (unless you tag us). If you are interesting in getting a response, this is perhaps the least efficient way. We are assured to see report, and likely to see a DM in a much more reasonable time.

    whoreticulture ,

    Also, I am not really seeing a personal insult? Criticism of personal dissonance, yeah, but is that an insult?

    You are not psychic.

    My analysis isn’t based on extra-sensory perception. I am able to look at the facts as they are presented from a rational, unemotional perspective. It is how I knew Hillary was going to lose in 2016, and it is how I know Biden is going to lose in 2024.

    Lol…it sounds like you’re saying that you know all of the answers because you don’t use your emotions when you think…haha

    There are no facts presented to you now that can tell you definitively what will happen in November.

    You being correct one time does not make you correct this time.

    We shall see.

    No we won’t, because all you are doing is calling heads or tails. You have a 1:2 chance of being right regardless of why you are making your prediction.

    Look honestly at the historical context and externalities of the moment you are in, and tell me you think it is a coin toss.

    FlyingSquid ,

    I think your prediction is a coin toss. It’s based on your emotions, not on evidence.

    I can appreciate where !Riccosuave is coming from.

    I personally feel that 2008 was the tipping point for a lot of people and we’ve been reeling from it ever since.

    While things may have been bad before, it really does feel like the intensity has increased dramatically ever since Trump was first elected. These people have become emboldened, and no longer keeping themselves in check. Any sense of decorum and decency are things of the past.

    You are welcome to dismiss me as nothing more than an over dramatic doomer, but I have a feeling I’m not the only one who feels this way. It’s not about being right or wrong. It’s about being overwhelmed and mentally drained about being able to do anything positive about it.

    Anecdotally, I would guess this is part of their motivation for the attempted assassination. They were likely so overwhelmed that they felt the only solution was to try to kill Trump.

    And if that’s even remotely true, that’s a fault of society as a whole as much as it is the shooter’s fault.

    One way or the other, we are at a pivotal moment in American history; and I’m not just being dramatic. There is a lot on the line for both sides no matter who wins in November.

    TheFrirish ,

    You’re being down voted but you’re right. This is the absolute nail in the coffin to seal his win. his culties are going to be mobilised more than ever now.

    The downvotes are a direct consequence of their fear and denial, which I absolutely understand. However, I feel it is my duty to speak the truth so that people can begin the process of accepting what is coming.

    GiddyGap ,

    This event just shows that anything can happen at any moment. Nothing is a sure thing. Not a Trump win, not a Biden win, and not a win for any other candidate who may run.

    xmunk , to nostupidquestions in Is it normal to be disgruntled?

    Totally sane. Most layoffs are an effort to boost stock prices because some executives made a dumb fucking decision.

    Being laid off is absolutely not a comment on your worth as an employee or a human being. You should give companies as much of your blood sweat and tears as they’d give you - none. With some extremely rare exceptions being an employee is just a transaction.

    Thorny_Insight ,

    Most layoffs are an effort to boost stock prices because some executives made a dumb fucking decision.

    …what? You want to elaborate on that a bit?

    adespoton ,

    Executives need to present company forecasts to shareholders at annual business meetings. If they mess up the forecast so the business plan doesn’t match the reality, they scramble to make the books balance somehow — the easiest place to do this is by cutting staff so that expenditures line up with earnings. Modern accounting means that even though they still have payouts to employees, they can count this in a separate loss bucket so that the bottom line item that investors watch still comes out where they “predicted” it would, which props up the stock price, making investors happy and preventing them from replacing the executives.

    xmunk ,

    That is one part - the other half is just simply that the market expects a response to any perceived failure. If a publicly traded company has a bad quarter the market wants to see some corrective action and it wants it now (long term plans don’t mesh with the constant news cycle of the market). Layoffs are a way to lower your expenses and cause a sudden shift in profit numbers… even though they nearly always result in long term damage to the company.
