Apple is bringing RCS to the iPhone in iOS 18 | The new standard will replace SMS as the default communication protocol between Android and iOS devices (www.theverge.com)

The long-awaited day is here: Apple has announced that its Messages app will support RCS in iOS 18. The move comes after years of taunting, cajoling, and finally, some regulatory scrutiny from the EU....

ForgotAboutDre ,

It would be inappropriate to not make it clear what messaging protocol is being used.

Most RCS chats will be going through googles servers. A user might want to know that.

ForgotAboutDre ,

What if you speak to someone on android, then it’ll most likely go through googles servers. Most carriers are using googles servers to service rcs. When you texting iPhone users you’ll be using iMessage so most of the time your going through googles servers.

So manufactured in China like the article says.

In Australia they’re all manufactured in China. So it’s a Chinese car.

Cars in high developed economies like Australia have until recently been mainly manufactured in highly developed economies like EU, Japan, US etc.

The placebo effect doesn’t help. It’s just noise in the data collection process. It’s particularly problematic with human trials that rely on subjective evidence. Humans have a bias that actions have effects, even when they don’t (gamblers blowing on dice, wishing on a star etc).

Any intervention will have people think that the outcome has changed because of the intervention. This doesn’t mean the placebo effect helped, it just altered the recorded outcome. If it was a device was used to make the measurement, rather than human opinion, we just call it noise/error.

It’s a common misconception that the placebo effect does something. It does nothing other than artificially increase subjective measurements. Placebo effect is stronger in very subjective medical conditions such as pain, shiny packaging and brand names are reported to provide greater pain relief. Such medicines are so tightly regulated the formulation and supply leaves very little opportunity for medicines to actually have an effect. You don’t see the same effect when it comes to reducing the size of cancer tumours or altering directly measurable quantities.

Doctors aren’t allowed to prescribe placebos in the UK. Because it’s dangerous and a source of corruption. Such as King Charles selling homeopathic services to the NHS. Doctors do recommend such services, they do this primarily to dismiss patients and their issues.

This study is absolutely terrible.

The study found no differences in the first four weeks. More than 10% dropped out during the study. The study was too small a sample to draw any serious conclusions from. The conclusions they did draw from were a subsample of people they declared treatment resistant. They even say in the paper their isn’t enough data to suggest their was any benefit, just not forcefully enough. Just enough to make low information readers think the study was successful.

This study was done in response to two other studies. One which showed no benefit another that suggested a benefit, but the study lacked a control group. So no meaningful conclusion could be drawn.

Finally the researchers were funded by ‘health supplement’ groups.

The evidence is much better for SSRI, and it isn’t great, but the referred paper even points out that the curriculum wasn’t as effective as an SSRI.

The meme remains true, no proper or valid studies exist. The existence of a paper doesn’t prove that, the paper is self addresses it wasn’t a proper study. They just did it in a dishonest way.

I didnt bother reading the second since the first was blatantly misleading.

The second looks like they’re trying to p hack hack their way to a result.

They also have more relapses in the curicumin group in the second 6 month period than the control group. They also have enough people leaving the control group to cause a shift in their p value to make their results insignificant.

The second papers findings are weak and they aren’t very robust.

The intro to the Wikipedia article on placebo is quite good. Lots of easily accessible sources often misrepresent the placebo effect. The Wikipedia article does suggest placebo effect improves pain response, but it does say perceived.

If someone says something uses the placebo effect it means it doesn’t work. They may not know that. But a placebo response is our measure for medical treatments that don’t work.

When people say the placebo effect works it’s like a microwave that doesn’t heat food. People hear the ding and tell you the food does feel warmer. The perception is that the broken microwave heats food, but the food isn’t any warmer. We avoid this issue in science by making measurements, but for fields like medicine we often rely on people saying how they feel. This is how the placebo effect corrupts medical studies. People are very unreliable. They also often want to be polite and say they had a positive effect from the treatment. This is doubly so for people that volunteer or buy these types of herbal treatments. They think only idiots would buy or take these things that don’t work, I’m not an idiot so the treatment must be working.

They aren’t enemies of the state. Groups are classed as terrorists when they are using violence and terror to attack a nation state government, or its interests. The KKK don’t challenge the state in this way, they terrorise people and they support violence. But they don’t define themselves or act as enemies to the state.

I think they should be classed as hate groups and possibly terrorists. They do use terror to try to enact social change. The social change they want is more of a regression than a revolution, so it can be easy for conservatives to sympathise with them. Conservatives make up half the political power in most countries so it’s hard to classify these types of groups as terrorists. These groups advocate for conservation of social norms, just the norms they want to preserve are oppression and lack of civil rights.

This doesn’t really help google, it only really improves their search results. Google wants these hyper SEO optimised results with lots of advertising. Additionally, the less relevant the result is the more searches a person does. Each search is an additional set of ad impressions.

Port forwarding means torrents. People using a VPN to torrent likely have much more traffic, especially those that seed (which is why they want port forwarding). Not enabling port forwarding means mullvlad can operate at a higher profit to cost ratio, and less risk.

ForgotAboutDre ,

That’s what mullvlad say. It’s not necessarily the reason why they don’t offer port forwarding.

It was always possible for them to continue allowing port forwarding. They could use separate servers for those that want port forwarding, stopping any impact port forwarding had on those customers.

ForgotAboutDre ,

There are plenty of other options in the market, including ones with port forwarding. It’s a very saturated market.

ForgotAboutDre ,

You need port forwarding to connect on torrents. Your able to torrent because everyone you torrent from has port forwarding enabled. If you want to access more seeders, and more commonly leechers you need port forwarding. This is useful for people using private trackers that want to maintain a ratio.

The UK never needed ID, there was no evidence of voter fraud happening at polling stations. So voter ID was introduced.

There has been evidence of voter fraud happening via postal votes where no id is required.

The UK doesn’t have any government ID, only ID by proxy like drivers license and passport. So poorer people and the elderly are less likely to have photo id. Only one group got an exception - the one that voted conservative.

The previous Scottish conservative leader committed electoral crimes live on TV. There was no consequences. But know people are further disincentivesed to vote, despite very little evidence of people fraudulent casting votes claiming to be someone else.

Not necessarily disloyal. But different loyalties.

Microsoft makes software used by governments all over the world. Any government that want to gather intelligence or blackmail another government could do it through inserted exploits in Microsoft’s code. The US could go straight to Microsoft to this in an official capacity. Other nations would influence the individuals working on the project to do it covertly. If your country asked you to do this, they are likely able to convince you it’s in the national interest and you would be harming your country if you didn’t.

It’s not that they wouldn’t be loyal, it’s who they would be loyal to.

In the UK pedestrian car collisions are falling, despite increased amounts of cars and distances walked. In the US pedestrian collisions are at high.

I don’t think it’s the safety features in cars that matter here. Similar features are going to be present in the UK as the US. People in the US are buying bigger and bigger trucks. They also have less walkable cities (this could also improve in the UK). They should be taxing larger vehicles more. Get them off the road, they have larger blind spots and greater injury on impact.

If it’s radar based it should be very reliable. The big issue is camera based stuff. Cameras can’t measure much, only colour and brightness. From this everything is inferred not measured. Inferring things isn’t inherently bad, but the errors need to be accurately known and considered. They probably are, it’s just they are not weighted correctly relative to cost.

ForgotAboutDre ,

That’s handy when the accelerators stuck to the bottom of the floor.

ForgotAboutDre ,

They still don’t measure distance, they only infer it by comparing two images. This still has the same issue. It’s just a more reliable way to infer distance than a single camera. It also requires less processing, hence it was popular for earlier computer vision applications.

ForgotAboutDre ,

You misunderstand. Two cameras can infer distance, they do not and cannot measure it.

Two cameras can produce more accurate and reliable distance results than one. But they still cannot measure distance only infer it.

For certain lighting conditions this can be very reliable like 3D scanners. But cars operate in a staggering range of lighting conditions, with a large variety of environments and materials.

ForgotAboutDre ,

You misunderstand. I never said they can calculate distance. They just don’t measure it, it’s inferred. Inferring results in unreliable estimates. The unreliability of which is not accounted for appropriately in camera based autonomy systems.

It’s not an issue in astronomy. Because people can examine the results further and discount any clearly incorrect distance calculations.

It’s not just about not seeing anything. Outdoors is one of the most variable and challenging lighting conditions for most systems. Too much light, shadows, etc.

You only need one frequency of light for camera based distance measurements. They require features rather than a specific light.

Your security camera does not operate in pitch black. It has infra red lights that illuminated the scene, you just can see it. Your security cameras are subject to problems in both high and low light conditions. It can make adjustments throughout the day to compensate for changing light. However it doesn’t make it measure distance.

I think this would need new legislation that would push software regulations further than they’ve been before.

Apple can allow apps to be installed outside their app store. The fee they are charging is likely related to accessing their APIs and tools for developing iOS apps. Apple would have to be forced to make these free.

Currently you could considerably make an iOS app without apple’s tools and APIs. But it would require significant effort to develope/reverse engineer these tools to make the app. Effort that is outside of the scope of most modern app development.

To force apple to make the APIs and tools open would likely require additional legislation. Saying not only must the device allow third party distribution of apps, but apple must support these activities for free. This is significantly different from making apple allow third party apps. It puts on them a real cost (not potential loss like allowing third party app stores).

This isn’t a problem for other systems because they actively invite people to develop and distribute their software for their system. But it would have implications for game consoles. Sony, MS and Nintendo would have to allow any potential developer access to their tools for free with little obligation.

ForgotAboutDre ,

Businesses would avoid this by making their apps certain device only or using different companies to publish their apps on each platform to stop them from needing to allow cross platform ownership.

ForgotAboutDre ,

Android replaced most of the OS that people would consider Linux normally. They only kept the kernal. The kerbal is Linux, but when people talk about Linux OS they usually mean Linux/GNU.

ForgotAboutDre ,

The legislation would probably be from start of sale rather than end. Otherwise it would have businesses binning old hardware that isn’t selling well to avoid the increased support time.

ForgotAboutDre ,

They do incur the cost of the tools and APIs. They would argue they eat the loss to support their market place.

I would argue apple making their APIs and tools open for everyone is in their best interests. It’s easier to control security issues if everyone uses the same tools and apis. But apple won’t care as much.

If a third party app store provides a tool or service to improve their app store, should apple expect to be able to use that for free? Negating any benefit that third party would get for developing such an improvement.

ForgotAboutDre ,

They are charging a development fee. Then a per user deployment fee for each copy of the software distributed. This is a normal structure for many commercial software.

You can still develop an iOS app and deploy it on a third party iOS store. It just can use any software that apple charges for.

The EU would need further legislation to stop apple from doing this. It would also have to be targeted very particularly at apple, else software licensing wouldn’t work.

To tell apple they couldn’t do this would require invalidating copyright licensing for all software generated by an OS provider that can be used on a application.

In all the examples you’ve suggested the software was given freely from the OS providers to apple. They didn’t ask for any money. Largely because they wanted people to make software for their systems. Video game consoles do exactly what apple is doing. Further they even have means to restrict the content that you can publish at all.
