Alexstarfire , in A little-known law has forced over 120,000 veterans to return the money they got to leave the military, new data shows

That’s ridiculous. Guy gets separation pay in 1996. Goes on disability in 2012. Then in 2023 they’re like, yea, we need that money from 1996 back so you can get disability. Who the fucking hell would ever expect that? That’s on whoever approved it and they should eat the fucking loss.

It’d have been dumb if he was denied disability in 2012 too. Otherwise, who would ever take separation money if it meant they’d never be able to claim disability without paying it back.

andrewta ,

The real problem is the people in those jobs were trained in with mentality of if you were smart as me you’d have my job. But since you don’t have my job, I’m smarter than you. Therefore anything that I say is good. Anything that I do is good. Any rules that I create no one could’ve done a better job. Any system that I create is golden. If you can’t understand that, then you must not be very smart and therefore you shouldn’t have my job.

That is the essence of how they are trained. From the top level to the bottom level people.

It won’t be all that hard for somebody who’s actually pushing the papers to look at the rules, understand the rules, and figure out a way around the problem. Where there is a will there is a way. Just get creative.

For those few instances where literally the employee would have zero ability to do anything other than follow exact rule that is there. In those few instances, I blame the bosses for again and being stupid as hell. Because somebody in the chain of command has the ability to override. Somebody in the chain of command has the ability to use common sense. But again it’s how they are trained of, if I created it it’s golden.

I see this in way too many walks to life. People who refuse to use simple common sense.

To change this is going to take a concerted effort on society as a whole. But I guarantee you not enough people will stand up and actually say anything. Not enough people will look at a situation and say that isn’t right. The problem is I literally hear people saying well they joined the military. They were stupid, so therefore it’s their problem.

We are too happy to open a door for a vet or stand and applaud the vets, but how many people have actually called their senator or representative saying fix this freaking problem.? When politicians come to the door knocking saying, please vote for me how many of you have stepped out on your doorstep and said hey this is the issue that matters and if you don’t fix the damn problem come next election I won’t vote for you.?

If you have done that good for you if you haven’t congratulations you’re part of the problem.

Furbag , (edited ) in Donald Trump Claims Kamala Harris ‘Turned Black’ in Jaw-Dropping Slur

This interview was stunning. He whinged and moaned the whole time about being made to wait, technical issues, other news networks, and not having his ass kissed constantly by the hosts. He did not substantially answer even one single question, and used every opportunity to speak to go off the rails on immigrants and spew lies so blatantly false that the hosts could fact check him on the spot. No Donald, innocent people don’t need pardons. No Donald, there is no such thing as a post-birth abortion. Holy Christ I cannot believe how absolutely fucking retarded Trump really is.

My favorite part was when he talked about how Kamala Harris is the worst vice president of all time and did a terrible job, but then shoved JD Vance under the bus and said that VP picks are just ceremonial and that they do nothing. Like, bro, which is it?

Drunemeton ,
@Drunemeton@lemmy.world avatar

kerrypacker ,

us insurance sounds insane, you are forced do deal with corporations in a scammy as fuck way

explodicle ,

How does it work elsewhere? We require doctors get malpractice insurance, and there’s growing support for making the police get liability insurance too.

boonhet ,

I live in Estonia.

For one, car insurance depends on your basic demographics (car registration location, owner’s years of driving/insuring experience), the car’s power rating and make/model - and finally, accident history. For any type of insurance that covers your own vehicle as well, it also takes into account the age and value of the vehicle (for the mandatory liability insurance, that’s irrelevant).

For medical insurance, your prior medical history doesn’t matter, there are no premiums. Your options are (simplified, there are some others too):

  1. Work and have social tax paid for you by the employer (they don’t get to weasel out of this with a regular work contract)
  2. Be an entrepreneur and pay yourself at least the minimum monthly salary with social tax, the rest you can take out as dividends or invest into growing the company
  3. Be a student, including university
  4. Be underage (this also gives you dental! I do wish everyone got dental)
  5. Be registered as unemployed and at least act like you’re trying to find a job
  6. Have some sort of permanent disability that’s severely impacting your ability to work
  7. Have a child under 3 years old
  8. If nothing else applies to you, you can pay a certain sum which was either monthly or quarterly, to have the same health insurance (this is mostly for those entrepreneurs who don’t want to pay themselves even a minimum salary because they’re already loaded and would rather avoid paying payroll taxes on themselves and only pay income tax if/when taking out dividends). I suppose you could also do it if your income is entirely illegal and therefore untaxed.

If you hit any of these, you pay €5 per doctor’s appointment, with some exceptions. Private care is more expensive. If you don’t in any way qualify for the national medical insurance, you’ll have to pay for your procedures and stuff, but the prices are reasonable usually.

As for liability insurance for medical malpractice and the police - I’m not 100% sure, but I do believe that victims get compensated by either the hospital, or the government in the case of the police. In any case, it’s very rare for anything like this to happen luckily.

I do believe life insurance that pays out if you die prematurely or get a major injury or disease, will still depend on your medical history - or at least whether you smoke and drink alcohol.

SatansMaggotyCumFart , in Even wealthy Americans are struggling to make ends meet

sunzu ,

SatansMaggotyCumFart ,

Most places is what I meant.

sunzu ,

median household US income is under 80K.

even most major metros are still under 100k.

SatansMaggotyCumFart ,

Do you think making $100k to $150k yearly makes you wealthy?

sunzu ,

it puts you into about 60-80% of the american households.

middle class by default would be 40-60%

"It's barely middle class for most places now." is hyperbolic

SatansMaggotyCumFart ,

What’s the definition of middle class in the US?

sunzu ,

whatever a person thinks it is haha

however, if we rely on something about more concrete than feelz like stats, it would be the middle of the population

SatansMaggotyCumFart ,

If you relied on stats you’d see it’s $50-$150k a year so what I’m saying isn’t even hyperbole.

sunzu ,

between $100k to $150k a year wealthy.

It's barely middle class for most places now.

This was the original statement....

50-100k covers about 38% to 63%

this is the middle.

100-150k: 63%-79%

See Distribution of household income in 2022 according to US Census data

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Household_income_in_the_United_States

Expanding lower bound to 50k does indeed appear to cover the "middle class" but income above 100k is hardly "barely middle class" from statistical point of view.

SatansMaggotyCumFart ,

The definition of middle class in the US is $50k - $150k based on the last census.

Hence why I said and continue to repeat that $100k - $150k is not wealthy but barely middle class.

I’m not sure what or why you are arguing here.

Xaphanos ,

That assumes a normal distribution. Wealth/income is not. An excellent resource is: Social Stratification in the United States: The American Profile Poster of Who Owns What, Who Makes How Much, and Who Works Where a.co/d/09LVTyYi

sunzu ,

"middle class" then has no meaning...

there are wage slaves and owners. i don't need a book to see that, i live it.

CaptainSpaceman ,

100% accurate

orcrist ,

I don’t think your definition of middle class is what most people use when they talk about it.

This is really obvious if you think about people remarking on the death of the middle class. They’re not saying that the mean or the median doesn’t exist. They are saying that families like the Simpsons are much less common than they used to be.

sunzu ,

They are saying that families like the Simpsons are much less common than they used to be

The fact that you are using a reference to corporate media to make your point gave me a chuckle lol

This shit is weaved so deep into social fabric, we are fucked.

givesomefucks ,

Yeah, but like, isn’t that where the majority of people live?

So when talking about “most places” it makes sense for it to be “places most likely for people to live”. If it was literally “most places” America is pretty fucking empty.

I googled it, the average price for an acre in Kansas is like 3.5k.

In “most places” it’s cheap as hell. But no one lives there so why talk about it?

sunzu ,

100k in Phoenix or Atlanta =/= 100k NYC or SF

givesomefucks ,

And “flyover” states 100k a year is like a millionaire…

So if going by “most places” you’d be using like 25k or even lower.

I get what you’re saying semantically, it’s just that if we’re being that semantic it’s meaningless, so clearly the other interpretation is what was meant.

Like, when someone uses “literally” you can tell what was intended.

You didn’t notice the forrest because all the trees were in the way homie.

sunzu ,

my point is that the term "middle class" is corpo propaganda...

Pacattack57 ,

That’s the talking point and semantics the rich want us to believe. That there’s plenty of places to live that are cheap.

They don’t tell the real truth that the majority of the US is desolate country and wilderness that no one wants to live or work.

Turns out the vast majority of people like deep fried meat. Were southern elites just lying their asses off like "fried chicken? Yeah, disgusting. Totally hate it"?

Such a dumb fucking stereotype

tburkhol ,

Chickens were often the only animals enslaved people were allowed to raise for themselves. Like many racist stereotypes, it’s more rooted in the 20th Century than slavery or early American history. There used to be some chain restaurants - notably Coon Chicken Inn - that used racist caricatures to sell their fried chicken, so it’s basically an advertising meme.

Pretty much the same thing for watermelon. It was an easy to grow fruit that freed slaves used as a source of income and they caricatured it in racist media.
