saxysammyp , in AP: Utah man suspected of threatening President Joe Biden shot and killed as FBI served warrant

Honestly this blood is on the hands of places like Fox News and OAN. They cater to and mermen’s mental illness until it manifests like this. And they know it. Fox News was making fun of its viewers off camera. The way that the skillfully manipulate the minds of the vulnerable is nothing short of intentional. If a therapist were to do this they would see jail time for sure. But when the media does it, we all just shrug.

Sigh, “ferment” is what I was going for… not sure what my auto correct was thinking when I fat fingered that. I won’t change it as the responses to it are funny and deserve context.

negativeyoda ,

I legit was on board calling these chuds mermen before reading your response

saxysammyp ,

Lol live your dream! I’m not saying you shouldn’t!

Alwaysfallingupyup ,

Im sure the people that shot him had nothing to do with it

saxysammyp ,

Obviously they are the ones who have to deal with the end result. But that is very myopic and unhelpful.

Redditiscancer789 ,

Considering they didn’t go to his house to shoot him, yeah it didn’t. But all bets are off when you shoot at people let alone law enforcement. Especially after posting the equivalent of “come get me you pussies!”

CodingCarpenter , in American woman, child freed after being kidnapped in Haiti last month

Fuck me the title made me think they like pulled out her uterus. Like saying somebody’s been child freed is a really fucked up way to describe that

Sightline ,

If you’re misreading that bad it may be time to take a break from the news.

elbarto777 ,

That would be the mother of euphemisms.

I’ve seen headlines saying “woman robbed pregnant woman’s unborn baby,” and that’s already sanitized (as opposed to “woman cut open pregnant woman and stole phoetus.”

Tedesche , in AP: US Navy sailor's mom encouraged him to pass military details to China, prosecutor says

Prosecutors have said Wei, who was born in China, was first approached by a Chinese intelligence officer in February 2022 while he was applying to become a naturalized U.S. citizen, and admitted to the officer that he knew the arrangement could affect his application. Even so, prosecutors say he provided the officer detailed information on the weapons systems and aircraft aboard the Essex and other amphibious assault ships that act as small aircraft carriers.

I don’t understand. This passage makes it sound like the guy was already allowed to serve in the armed forces, even though he wasn’t yet a U.S. citizen. AFAIK, that’s not allowed. Am I wrong or what’s going on here?

fubo ,
Tedesche ,

Wow. That’s stunning. I do not approve.

partial_accumen ,

To my knowledge, US Citizenship is not required for service in the US Military. I’m remembering some controversy when Trump deported US veterans that were not yet citizens. Here’s some effort working to undo that Trump damage

Tedesche ,

That’s just sad. And very Trumpy.

andrewta ,

They are allowed to serve.

What is really wrong is that after they complete their contract (3 or 4 or 5 year contract) , they don’t become citizens. To me if they served honorably then they should get their citizenship. To me throughout their time in service they should be told “ go to that office and do certain paperwork to continue the process of getting you citizenship, if you don’t want your citizenship then you will have to fill out a form that states that you don’t want it “.

To me the process should literally be part of their time in service. So that the day their contract is done, or the day they re enlist they become citizens. They earned it. If they can be trusted to launch jets off an aircraft carrier, then they should be trusted to be citizens.

Tedesche ,

It does seem to be a better test of National loyalty than a written/verbal exam.

MagnumDovetails , in Robbie Robertson, Leader of The Band, Dies at 80

I highly suggest watching “The Last Waltz” directed by Scorsese. It has a serious list of guest appearances and is obviously a well done film documenting the last performance by The Band

While I don't celebrate the man's death, I am thankful that the FBI acted to stop him before he hurt anyone else.

I fully believe in free speech and open political discourse, but deadly threats of violence need to be taken seriously and acted upon quickly.

If you threaten to kill someone, you're denying their right to free speech. There's no free speech when you're dead. It's my belief that a person should not be protected under the same rights that they deny to others.

Me too, but it sounds like a pipe dream at this point. 😢

Arotrios , (edited )
@Arotrios@kbin.social avatar

It's not. Remember that's what all oppressors want you to think. All that evil requires to exist is for good people to do nothing, which is why those who would do evil do all they can to convince you that your efforts against them mean naught.

    Why are they such a big deal? I like a few of the songs from them but don’t understand the hype. Sad to hear of his passing nonetheless.

    I wonder how many MAGA Republicans come to his defense saying, “The police did not need to kill him, he wasn’t a threat. He was in his own home,” while they never gave two shits about Breonna Taylor, and possibly even said that she deserved it because she was possibly involved in crime. Well, here we are, you feel part of what the Black population felt, and so what can we change? Is it the guns, is it the law enforcement? Or is it the people at the top (same people, for both sides), who made this happen?

    LibertyLizard ,

    Was there any indication Breonna Taylor was involved in crime?

    resurrexia ,

    Pandantic ,
    @Pandantic@midwest.social avatar

    She used to date a person involved in crime, and went to his house a number of times, but she was not with him at the time. That’s all, but she was being followed in relation to him.

    LibertyLizard ,

    So basically not at all.

    Pandantic ,
    @Pandantic@midwest.social avatar

    Correct.

    And just to be clear, I’m not saying she was involved in crime, I’m saying these things are why the police were watching her and why they might say she was “possibly involved in crime”. I do not believe she was at all, and from all accounts, she had already distanced herself from that person quite some time before her murder.

    Arotrios , in Teen sent 'hobo hunting' text before killing homeless woman with pellet gun: prosecutors
    @Arotrios@kbin.social avatar

    Having done a fair amount of homeless outreach in my time, this is the reason why folks who have been on the streets for a while are so vulnerable to paranoia. If you don't have a place to live in America, you're under threats of assault like this all the time, from both everyday citizens and the cops. That constant fear and need to always be looking over your shoulder eats people up from the inside out.

    I wish folks would realize this when discussing the homeless problem and the associated behavioral issues. Even if you're not crazy when you hit the streets, a couple of months out there will either make you paranoid or make you dead.

    ArugulaZ ,

    They think you're expendable when you're homeless; an easy target that nobody will miss. I heard about some farmer jerk who would recruit drifters to buy cows at auctions, then plug them to absolve himself of guilt. After law enforcement found the bodies, they gave the dude the death penalty, but it took a long, long time before he was charged with anything. Can't say the motherfucker is missed.

    fidodo ,
