I always love how baffled podcasters and such are when they report about crimes in other countries where criminals have to be protected from the public (like Germany) and they cannot find mugshots or even a last name.

It's none of our business, people.

ki77erb ,

I agree unless we’re talking about sex crimes like rapists and pedophiles. In those cases, I think we absolutely should know exactly who’s been convicted and whether or not they live near my house.

Zorsith ,
@Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Reporting on something actively being investigated is how innocent people have their lives ruined by the public. There are registries and maps already for convicted rapists/pedophiles.

ki77erb ,

Yes I know. That’s what I’m referring to.

zaph ,

You’re talking about post conviction (or at least I hope you are). The discussion is about pre-conviction.

ki77erb ,

Yes, I am absolutely talking about post conviction.

Norgur ,
@Norgur@fedia.io avatar

I disagree even with post-conviction. I think that being "the sex offender" forever will drive people in corners they would otherwise have steered clear of. Most sex crimes are domestic violence cases and are not about evil men succumbing to their overbearing and perverse sex drive. They are about control and power. So forcing a sex offender who has committed such an act and then payed for his crime into the role of the pervert psychopath forever is actually not helping anybody.

Same goes for pedophiles. Should they be hardcore barred from every goddamn child on earth? Abso-fucking-lutely. But I don't think that exposure is the right tool here. They can be barred from working with children, they can be checked on by police, there is so much one can do to prevent people like them from doing horrible stuff to children. Pushing them onto a corner for what is ultimately a condition they didn't choose (they did choose to act.on it of course) will just make them the monster they are perceived as, even if they would have managed to get themselves under control had they not been made a pariah for their entire life.

But I get that this is pretty much a cultural thing. I for my part think that it is right that we do not expose people on maps here in Germany.

ki77erb ,

I can appreciate your point of view and I realize not every “sex crime” is a sicko pedophile. Even a teenager sending a nude photo to their boyfriend/girlfriend can be considered a sex crime in many places. So there are gray areas.

However, I stand by the fact that I would absolutely want to know if my next door neighbor was a rapist, pedophile or producer/collector of child porn. That’s just the father/husband in me being protective of my family.

Norgur ,
@Norgur@fedia.io avatar

The father in me also wants to know.... Kind of. I only want to know if there is someone that might actually do something. If they don't do anything to my kid, I don't think it's any of my business what this person has done or hasn't done. That's for the courts and police to deal with. Since "only tell me when you're up to no good" is not possible, I actually prefer to not know.

Too bad they didn’t go with the Polaris Tri-color. I agree with Grey that it was the best of the color variations.

LastYearsPumpkin ,

I liked this choice. The tri-color seemed a little busy to me.

hydrashok ,

I agree. I do like the tri color and would have been happy with it, but there’s a quote from whom I cannot remember that essentially is “flag design is finding the perfect flag and then dialing it down a notch”. And to that end, I think it succeeds wonderfully.

It’s modern but classic. Detailed but not busy. Inclusive but not all-encompassing. It’s pretty amazing.

I am glad they changed the star design; I think the new one is much better.

GlitterNinja ,

My only gripe with the alterations of the submitted design is the star shape change.

I loved the big points in the cardinal directions with smaller points in between. I dislike this eight-pointed star.

chitak166 ,

They were both good, but I think they made the more-refined “high-brow” decision by going with fewer colors.

I’m actually jealous of this flag. Only downside is it’s kind of hard to see against the blue sky, lol.

I thought the same thing. Here's the archived Texas Observer article on it, which is what this article's source seems to be.

Apparently the principal heard from another student that this kid was "making threats" against her. Sounds pretty thin to me.

AnneBonny ,

The whole thing is weird.

His ordeal began five days later. In the late morning of September 8, Timothy was pulled out of music class and ushered into a room where he found Garza, Assistant Principal Michelle Saucedo, a district police officer, and a counselor sent from the district’s central administrative office. He was told another student had just reported that Timothy said he was planning to kill the principal. Rincon said she was called and rushed to the school but was not allowed to be in the room while Timothy was being questioned.

“When the police officer had his body cam off, they were yelling and telling me, ‘We’re gonna go to the full extent. We’re gonna put you in a lockbox,’” Timothy said. “Then, when the body cam was finally on, they were so nice.”

Timothy told me he had explained to the school and district officials that the accusations were not true, that the only conversation he had that morning was with two other boys about wearing his sweater over his uniform.

Rincon has received only a school conduct referral form, on which administrators wrote that “Timothy told another student that his hair was messy because he was up all night to come up with a plan to kill Mrs. Garza (principal).” Underneath, Timothy wrote: “No I was not up all night I just forgot [to comb my hair].”

On the bottom of the form, administrators had written: “OSS [out-of-school suspension] 3 days 9/11-9/13.”

Not the point of this article/topic but why is law enforcement required to wear body cameras but they can turn them off whenever they want!? That’s asking for abuse! Unless they’re using the restroom (and even then I’d lean towards an independent reviewer deleting footage, if anyone). These are public servants on-the-clock! If there’s no enforcement, there’s no consequences to purposely deactivating the taxpayer-funded camera they’re supposed to be operating under…

Goferking0 ,

Witchhatswamp ,

Yes, and they are being bribed just like our politicians were

withabeard ,

Sadly, only somewhat true nowadays.

There are plenty of parts of healthcare that are privatised and pay only. Some of this paid for by the NHS and the current government are attacking the “costs” of that. Especially as the treatments are often more expensive when done privately than they were on the NHS. Dental and optical treatment are privatised now. Much of our ambulance and rescue service are now private or voluntary. We’re seeing ever increasing costs for the ambulance services, while watching wait times skyrocket. Given private ambulance firms are measured on a few KPIs, they are targeting those over general care. Many surgeries that used to be covered (such a cleft lip) by the NHS are now regarded as cosmetic and come with insurance deductibles or are not even covered by insurance.

Many industries, such as software development, are offering private cover as a workplace bonus. What that means in reality is when I come off my motorbike, the expensive emergency surgery I need will be covered by an NHS surgeon. The insurance company will then “elect” to pay for me to be moved to a comfortable hotel/hospital where I can stay in comfort. That comfort is what I’ll be paying my insurance for, not the actual surgery.

lol Trump is a career criminal and grifter, and you are the mark, and now he is finally facing legal consequences for years of crime.

I feel sorry that you can’t see this and Trump has somehow convinced you it’s political persecution. It’s hard to hear or accept, but you are being grifted and tricked to support and follow a mob boss scam artist.

    RagingRobot , (edited )

That criminal tried to say my vote didn’t count and tried to have it overruled. I don’t care who’s political opponent he is. He needs to be sent to a federal pound me in the ass prison.

    Atomic ,

    Context matters.

They’re not going after him BECAUSE he is an opponent.

They’re going after him because he committed crimes.

Being a political opponent does not grant you diplomatic immunity.

Don’t feel sorry for others, feel sorry for yourself.

givesomefucks , in Columbus police chief apologizes after a viral video showed officers blaming an 11-year-old girl for being groomed

He tells the officers his daughter is already asleep, and that he had hoped they could help talk to her about the seriousness of the situation. The female officer quickly tells him that his daughter could be charged with creating sexually explicit content.

The father protests and says that she is a child who was manipulated by an adult, according to the police report and the father’s TikTok video. The officer asks him if she was taking pictures, and the father ends the conversation.

In audio of the body camera footage, the female officer can be heard asserting again as she walks away from the house, “She’s taking pictures of herself naked. She’s creating child porn.”

This is the same fucking logic groomers use…

Once they get anything they shouldn’t have, they blame the victim and blackmail them into more and more stuff.

Even if they do t get anything more, the child would be less likely to tell anyone.

It’s fucking insane that the issue isn’t these cops, the actual law is set up like this, and there’s no way to know how often it prevents report.

Well you see tracking down sex offenders is difficult. But persecuting under aged girls is much easier, so the police took that route. (I wish I was joking. But police are unbelievably bad at catching criminals)

    ualr.edu/…/the-injustice-of-americas-rape-kit-bac…

The police can’t even be bothered to process rape kits so states just ban abortion to solve the rape problem in America.

    RaoulDook ,

Standard same old cop bullshit. They are too lazy to look for the actual bad guy so they try to make the victim (hey she’s right here already!) into a criminal they can charge with some crime, so they can pat themselves on the back as the great Heroes of the community.

    @Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

What specifically is she apologizing for?

Blowing a giant vape cloud in on someone’s head, smoking in front of a pregnant woman, jacking off a guy in public, dancing in a theater where everyone is sitting, flipping off the ushers, or lying about all of that stuff because she thought it wasn’t on camera?

Can we add the possibility of snorting a mile of coke acting like that? Surely coke was involved. I’m not covering for her actions but ALL THAT (gesturing widely) has definite coke energy.

My thought was ecstasy, especially with all the sexual contact. Coke needs maintenance to keep the high good, and a play would be too long for that. Ecstasy would have enough leg for the whole evening.

jacking off a guy in public

Most people would be getting prosecuted for this

She also had a boob out, so there ought to be an indecent exposure charge if nothing else.

Children there too. Put her on a list like her husband.
