They’re almost exclusively being imported as antique vehicles. I don’t think you’re going to find a cheap, useful, 25-year old Chinese EV, but all the power to you!

n2burns ,

None of those are Chinese EVs. I was pointing out that the “anique import loophole” doesn’t apply to Chinese EVs (at least for another couple decades).

n2burns ,

While we’ve seen this cycle play out quite a few times in Big Tech, I think a lot of people just aren’t aware of what it is. I’ve had friends decry how, “Uber is now basically as expensive as a taxi.” I point out how Uber is only recently profitable and see people’s minds get blown.

n2burns ,

It’s literally in the article:

…the U.S. announced on May 28 that it had suspended operations so repairs could be made.

The United Nations said on Friday it had still not resumed transportation of aid from the pier to U.N. World Food Programme warehouses.

n2burns ,

I agree with your message, but as a Canadian, I always find it funny how Americans throw around “unelected” as a pejorative. Very few countries hold elections for anything that isn’t a professional-political positions. Maybe I’m biased from my experiences, but I don’t think there is anything wrong with judges being unelected, they should be apolitical and follow a code of ethics.

n2burns ,

I’m not even sure if terms are necessary, though I don’t mind the idea of a long term where at the end, Justices would have to be re-nominated. The Supreme Court of Canada (SCC) does just fine with lifetime appointments (though we do have mandatory retirement at 75).

I think we could tinker with rules and procedure (for example, instituting strong codes of ethics), but I think what SCOTUS needs is a change in cultural norms, and that’s extremely hard to bring about. The process for appointments to the SCC and SCOTUS are very similar, yet SCOTUS appointments are highly politicized while any “seemingly political” appointments of judges in Canada have faced huge public backlashes.

I think there are many differences that created these cultural norms but IMHO, one of the biggest is the politicization of lower-level judges (as well as other positions). This interweaves law and politics, and it’s not unheard of for members of the judiciary to jump into full political-positions and back again. This is very different than Canada, where we also have many lawyers who enter politics, but that basically closes the door on ever entering the judiciary.

Georgia Republican convicted in Jan. 6 riot walks out during televised congressional primary debate (apnews.com)

A Georgia congressional candidate convicted of a misdemeanor for illegally demonstrating inside the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, walked out of a televised debate with a fellow Republican on Sunday ahead of a June 18 primary runoff....

n2burns ,

Even then, “locked away for life” seems pretty extreme.

n2burns ,

I don’t think anyone should be locked away in Gitmo. It doesn’t matter how bad a person is, they’re still a person and shouldn’t be exposed to torture, abuse, etc.

n2burns ,

I by no means love Kamala Harris, but she’s not “just a woman,” she was a strong candidate period.

n2burns ,

If it was me, I’d be worried that Alito would use his contacts/indirect power. You don’t get on SCOTUS without a TON of networking. Side benefit: plausible deniability since it isn’t direct retaliation.

n2burns ,

My S10e says the same date without this update.

n2burns ,

I disagree. If borrowers are unable to afford a down payment, that almost certainly means they have very little financial flexibility, which is necessary when owning a home. Now, I’m not trying to blame borrowers for this scenario. They are living through an affordability crisis and are almost certainly affected by the housing crisis if they are renting (as opposed to living rent-free/light with family). By allowing zero down mortgages, it’s treating a symptom, but letting the underlying causes fester.

n2burns , (edited )

I know that’s the case in some markets, but I think it’s pretty close in most places. Especially when you consider the other expenses of ownership like maintenance, property tax, insurance, etc. I know in my situation, we have a few hundred dollars a month more flexibility by owning instead of renting.

n2burns ,

Is 20% the rule where you live? The article says the down payment is 3%.

n2burns ,

To each their own, but I prefer wired earbuds run under my shirt, especially at the gym. Then if I need to take one out or they fall out, they’re tethered to me.

n2burns ,

In a pocket, an arm-band, or compression shorts, sure! I guess I don’t know where else it’d be.

n2burns ,

I’m confused. An arm-band is not pants. Pockets are found on shirts/sweaters too. I guess compression shorts could be considered pants?

Muslim nurse in New York fired after calling Israel's war in Gaza 'genocide' (www.reuters.com)

WASHINGTON, May 30 (Reuters) - A New York City hospital fired a Palestinian American Muslim nurse after she called Israel’s war in Gaza a “genocide” during an acceptance speech for an award for her work with bereaved mothers who lost their children during pregnancy and childbirth....

n2burns ,

You’re talking like the First Amendment is the definition of Free Speech, and it’s not. I don’t know New York law, and I’m not an American, so I can’t say if this firing breaks any free speech laws, but it definitely contravenes the concept of free speech.

n2burns ,

Free speech as a concept isn’t just limited to the government, that’s a limitation of the First Amendment.

Free Speech ≠ First Amendment

n2burns ,

Well, that’s because supporting Ukraine isn’t political, but supporting Gaza is, and we can’t have any politics in the workplace! (/s + people use “political” when they actually mean “divisive”)

n2burns ,

Neither does Free Speech as defined in the First Amendment. No right is absolute, the question is where’s the line?

n2burns ,

Right, but even the First Amendment has limits, like hate speech and threats of violence. I guess the question is where’s the line for private employers. And I don’t think calling what’s happening in Gaza a genocide (arguably true) is the same as saying anti-vax things (which are almost exclusively lies). They might both be considered “over the line”, but one is much closer to that line.

n2burns ,

I don’t know specifics of New York labour laws, but I know they’re much more employee friendly than other states (though that’s a pretty low bar to clear). I know some speech is protected, so the content does matter.

n2burns ,

I didn’t realize New York was an “At-Will Employment” state. As a Canadian, it’s so weird that NY is one of the most progressive states, yet feels so far behind us (and we, in turn, are so far behind many European countries).

We’re not talking about one person, but the macro-economic trends in general. Many individuals will not follow the trend, as it represents the economy as a whole.

    n2burns ,

I think it’d be helpful to understand why you want a lightweight distro. I’m running Linux Mint (Cinnamon) on a x201 (~13 years old) and am happy with it’s performance. I doubt you’re going to have any issues with any distro with your laptop (as others have pointed out, mainstream Thinkpads are well supported by Linux).

I know I have friends who run beasts of machines but refuse to “waste” resources on niceties like animations and whatnot. If you’re into that, I assume you want to optimize and tinker, that’s different that lightweight.

    n2burns ,

I agree this seems low, but this is just a settlement with the city. Hopefully they’ll get more from other organizations.

    n2burns ,

Please tell us more. Make? Model? Any modifications? Your history with the car?

iPhones And Androids Can Now Warn You of 'Secret Trackers' (www.ibtimes.co.uk)

In a collaborative effort, Apple and Google have developed an industry-standard detection feature called “Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers” (DULT) for Bluetooth trackers. This standard allows users on iOS and Android devices to be alerted if an unknown Bluetooth tracker is monitoring their location.

    n2burns ,

My spouse and I are currently watching Star Trek: TNG, so I thought of Data saying, “Sir, there appears to be an unauthorized tracking device following our movements.”

    n2burns ,

I’m not too familiar with historic international law, but most of the ones in modern use are only decades old. So, while the invasion of Hawaii may be immoral and may have broken international norms, I’m not sure if it’s consider to have broken “International Law”.

    n2burns ,

YotoPhone. They also made a version 2 & 3. Unfortunately, Yota went bankrupt.

    n2burns ,

If the charges lead to convictions

I think you mean if the warrants are issued. There is a warrant for Putin, and that made him cancel a trip to South Africa. I agree with the rest of what you said. I hate how often people let, “Perfect be the enemy of Good.” It would definitely be better if the ICC had more members, but even in states that aren’t signatories, the court can have an influence on their leaders.

    n2burns ,

Emulation is almost always slower and eats more battery.

FTFY. There have been some cases where emulation actually outperforms native execution, though these might be, “the exceptions that prove the rule.” For example, in the early days of World of Warcraft, it actually ran better on WINE on Linux than natively on Windows.

    n2burns ,

This article seems to conflate “emulation” and “translation layer”. I don’t think there is anything that confirms “Prism emulates an x86 CPU”, only that it allows for running x86 code on ARM. This does not inherently require emulation as demonstrated by Rosetta 2, which is a translation layer.

    n2burns ,

WINE doesn’t “translate” one CPU architecture to another CPU architecture

    Wrong again.

    n2burns ,

Same reason the headlines aren’t listing Hamas leader: the international public doesn’t know who they are. Netanyahu, on the other hand, has been on the international stage since the '90s.

4 months durability for an $800 phone!

My old $200 Motorola G9 Power phone lasted almost 4 years with only very minor scratches. Obviously in that period I have dropped it a few times getting out of the car, where the phone sometimes work itself out of my pant pocket while I drive, and then it slips out when I get out of the car. But no problem on my previous phones,...

    n2burns ,

In particular, it means you can’t easily pick up, use, and put down your phone and maintain charging.

I strongly disagree. While you can’t “maintain charging”, it’s extremely easy to change from charging to using and back again. If you want to use your phone while charging, wireless charging doesn’t make sense, but if you want to quickly use your phone (like sending a quick text), it’s nicer than having a cable attached.

    FTA:

Butker recently delivered the commencement address at Benedictine College, a liberal arts institution in Atchison, Kansas. This is the same college that once forced out gay basketball player Jallen Messersmith to remove a rainbow flag from his dorm room window.

It would seem that Butker felt right at home.

So unfortunately, it seems like this might be what the college was going for.

    n2burns ,

I would say the pick one is more of “Liberal arts institution” and “rural Kansas”.

    n2burns ,

Mmm yes, business news about unions at a car tech company. Definitely why I subscribed to a tech community.

FTFY. Tesla is a tech company that makes cars. Their union busting practices are business decisions, which in turn affect the industry, which again, is technology.

    n2burns ,

I was a bit surprised rent wasn’t higher, but I wonder how many of the respondents haven’t moved and have rent control, so they aren’t affected by rent hikes.

    n2burns ,

I definitely agree with you about the data, but people’s feelings do matter, that’s why we’re currently experiencing a vibecession.

    n2burns ,

People’s feelings affect how they act. Those actions, collectively, can have an impact on the economy (recession spending can cause a recession), politics (especially with elections in 6 months), and society in general. As they say, “perception creates reality.”

    n2burns ,

That’s a quote from Malaysia’s commodities minister, so I don’t know if you can trust it. The article also says

The Asian nation is the world’s second-largest producer of the widely used commodity, whose production is blamed by environmentalists for fuelling the destruction of the great ape’s habitats in both Malaysia and Indonesia.

    n2burns ,

I know this seems like Niantic is free-loading, but this is intentionally-allowed by the ODbL license and honestly, might be a good business decision even without considering the licensing fees. OSM is almost 20 years old and as a community led project, is probably more predictable and stable than a Google license which could change drastically from one contract to the next.

As a OSM contributor, I’m more than happy to see my work used this way, and as @QuadratureSurfer pointed out, OSM has seen a lot of benefit too.

    n2burns ,

I’m a pretty junior contributor (I spent a couple years completing quests on StreetComplete and only have been adding new buildings, etc for a few weeks). I don’t know a ton about how the organization is run, so I can only talk from my experiences. I’ve been able to upload changes which will be live before they will be reviewed. I know there are reviewers who go through areas regularly, but they definitely don’t cover everywhere. I’m not sure if OSM has the ability to lockdown areas with frequent vandalism.

    n2burns ,

The Worm is in the Hall of Fame and a unique talent in all of basketball history. His personality is…also unique…so I’m not saying I want to meet him. However, comparing someone so significant to the history of a major sport to someone who will probably be a footnote in US political history is just insulting!

    n2burns ,

I experienced this yesterday, maybe 12 hours ago? So not just in the last few hours.
