This is one of the possible results when medicine and hospital care is run but cutthroat corporations. All healthcare should be required, by law, to be non profit.

I ran the books for a law firm for I don’t know how many years. They had a profit larger than $500 one year, and that was by choice. We put all the profits in salaries every year. For smaller businesses it’s pretty easy. Larger companies it’s harder but doable, you just have to be right on top of your bookkeeping.

homesnatch ,

There’s no issue with this because it gets taxed either way… all of the employees pay tax on the additional income probably at about the same rate as the company would have.

For a hospital on the other hand, they’re just increasing costs of Healthcare.

I work for a nonprofit Healthcare system, unfortunately the companies we buy our materials from are definitely for profit, as are the insurance companies that do their damnest to not spend their money.

If you’re serious, there are two different uses of the term.

  1. (US, slang) A member of a violent gang; a violent person.
  2. (vulgar, sex) Someone who takes part in a gangbang.
velvetThunder ,

I am a member of a violent gangbang.

bradorsomething ,

Weird the US slang version comes before the actual definition. Someone needs to edit that Wikipedia article.

Every other dictionary (Including US ones)

gangbang /găng′băng″/

noun

  1. Sexual intercourse forced upon one person by several others in rapid succession.
  2. Sexual intercourse involving several people who select and change partners.
  3. Sexual intercourse involving more than two persons, especially with a high proportion of men.
  4. A street gang attacking random people on the streets and/or committing gang crimes.

intransitive verb

  1. To participate in a gangbang, either consensually or as an aggressor.
  2. To participate in violent gang-related activities.
  3. To subject (someone) to a gangbang.
force , (edited )

Whether a term is characteristic of a certain dialect or region isn’t generally considered all that much when it comes to order on Wiktionary, unless it’s an “obscure” dialect. I contribute a lot to Wiktionary (mainly for languages other than Modern English though) and there are few rules on the specific the order of definitions, it’s mostly just common definitions above uncommon definitions (but this isn’t even a hard rule).

Editing it to change the order for your reason specifically might be considered vandalism, as it’s typical and allowed for entries to be like this and it’s common for little disputes like that to cause editing wars (although that’s admittedly far more common on Wikipedia, since many Wiktionary contributors are actually linguists and are less controversial).

That being said, someone actually did intentionally move the “gang member” definition above the other one, so there’s clearly some sort of difference in opinion.

If you want it changed, the course of action you should take is starting a discussion about it. It’s a good way to get a community consensus.

set_secret ,

Was it changed recently? Lol

intensely_human ,

Obviously this asshole’s going to go with the strongest evidence he has, which implies that no, it wasn’t changed recently.

intensely_human ,

So let’s be clear here. You’re implying very heavily. Are you actually claiming that this person did this nefarious thing? What are you saying?

force , (edited )

No, not at all. You can easily view the edit history of all Wiktionary pages – 2 years ago, someone put the definitions in the order they are now for a specific reason. This person thinks it should be the other way around, so if they want to change it it’d be best to make a discussion about it. That’s the best way to get a community consensus on it. Wiktionary is a collaborative effort, people have different opinions on the specifics of a page, that’s why discussions exist and are the go-to for settling differences in views.

intensely_human ,

Your entire comment reads like a subtle lecture to set_secret about the pitfalls of editing Wiktionary to support his argument in this thread. I think you did that on purpose, because you figured people would interpret it as what it seems to imply.

One morning I was taking a bus to work. Two guys robbed me while I was standing at the bus stop. I had fifteen dollars, which I happily gave to them.

I went over to my neighbor that evening and told him what happened.

The next day, there was fifteen dollars in my mailbox.

I moved from there to high end HOA in Texas and holy hell it was miserable. I hated them all. They were the nosiest, most judgemental assholes imaginable. One lady would go walking down the alleys checking how many beer cans people had in their recycling and called the police on one house charging them with child neglect because of beer cans in their recycling bin. Fuck that neighborhood forever.

(There’s a funny coda to the robbery. I smoked a lot back then. When they were done shoving the gun in my ribs and walking away, I blurted out, “guys, I’m stressed. Do one of you have a light?” and I swear on a stack of books of your choice that one of them turned around and lit my cigarette)

Doesn’t sound like you’d need to if the cops are running around with that kind of fire power in their cars.

quindraco ,

To be clear in case I wasn’t, I was referring to semiautomatic firearms. In general, only the military will carry fully automatic weapons around as a matter of course. Similarly, I’m referring to (relatively) lower caliber than the military - I wouldn’t expect a cop to casually carry around a rifle chambered in .50, although I certainly would expect a shotgun for e.g. breaching a door when necessary.

Some of our cops have shotguns usually, and in some towns, rifles in their car, and they are almost never used.

sylver_dragon , in Baltimore bridge collapses into river after being hit by cargo ship

The investigation report is going to be interesting. While bridges can only take so much punishment, they are usually designed to survive some collisions with their pylons. I wonder what the state of the bridge was, prior to the collapse. If it’s anything like the rest of the infrastructure in the US, it was probably not good. Though, this may also be a case that the designers in the 70’s planned for a collision with a cargo vessel of the times, which were tiny bath tub boats compared to the super container ships we have now. The Dali was built in 2015 she is a 300m ship capable of carrying 116851 tons. That’s a lot of mass for the pylon and it’s barriers to stop.

grue ,

I’m pretty sure no bridge is designed to survive a collision with a large cargo ship, even a brand new one. It would balloon the cost so much nobody would be willing to pay it.

You999 ,

New bridges are built with protections such as pylons to prevent ships from even getting close to bumping into the bridge after the sunshine skyway bridge collapse of 1980.

Dark_Arc ,
@Dark_Arc@lemmy.world avatar

This makes a lot of sense, thanks for the insight!

Socsa ,

In this case I’m not sure it would have mattered. This wasn’t a bump or a glancing blow. There’s not much which will deflect or absorb that much energy head on.

You999 , (edited )

I disagree, the geometry of protection dolphins use would deflect the ship enough to change its trajectory towards the walls of the channel bed where the ship would run aground before striking the bridge even from a head on collision.

Blumpkinhead ,

What is a geometry protection dolphin?

elfin8er ,

I believe it refers to this: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolphin_(structure)

You999 ,

They are concrete or wooden structures that are piled deep into the ground like fondation foundation pylons on skyscrapers. The geometry part I was just referring to how they are angled in such a way it ricochets the ship away from the structure it’s protecting or towards the channel. https://sh.itjust.works/pictrs/image/73ba5bec-c718-4f0d-b353-9fa66941bd2c.jpeg

kaboom36 ,

So why on earth didn’t the bridge have these?

You999 ,

If I had to speculate? Cost savings… The bridge already had a history of cost reductions such as originally being built with a shared approach way which vastly increased the risk of head on collisions.

While the Key Bridge was built as a four-lane bridge, its approaches were kept to two lanes to save money

kaboom36 ,

So in their effort to save money, they got 6 people killed and now have to spend presumably much more on a whole new bridge…

You999 ,

Possibly but you have to keep in mind this bridge was designed in the late 60s when a lot of the safety regulations that were written in blood hadn’t happened yet. The Florida state sunshine skyway bridge collapse wouldn’t happen for over a decade after the Francis Scott Key bridge opened.

drphungky ,

A. It did, just only a few and the investigation will probably reveal not enough based on giant ships these days.

B. It was built before the Sunshine bridge collapse in 1980 so before the standards were updated.

A bridge is quite different to a pylon though.

This is the absolute dumbest shit I’ve seen in a while. And it’s said so confidently, kind of amazing.

Blumpkinhead ,

Why do you say that?

Telodzrum ,

This structure was hit head on by a laden container ship. Container ships weigh between 50,000 and 200,000 tons depending on size and cargo. There is not a structure capable of being created by man which could sustain that amount of force, head on, and retain its structural integrity.

Buncha armchair idiots think they know more about bridge construction than civil engineers. Gods, this place is just more and more like Reddit by the minute.

drphungky ,

Kinda crazy how those same construction and civil engineers are going to be investigating if the normal means of protection for this very foreseeable event was done correctly, because we design things to avoid these head on collisions:

wjla.com/…/questions-investigators-will-be-asking…

Also, not for nothing but even if they find out the dolphins in place were sufficient based on prior standards…this event will likely update the standards, same as the sun bridge in the 80s. Regulations and best practices are written in blood.

AlexWIWA ,

People always forget that deflection exists. I don’t know why that guy is hung up on stopping the ship instead of just nudging it forcefully. If we can figure out a way to deflect explosions and sabot rounds, we can deflect a ship.

drphungky ,

Yeah also just the basic concept of sacrificial parts and things designed to wear. The derailleur hanger on your bike, crumple zones in cars, plastic gears in your KitchenAid mixer - lots of engineering practices are designed around shunting failure to a particular piece or in a particular way, to avoid otherwise catastrophic or very expensive damage.

Telodzrum ,

Oh my god! No way! They’re going to investigate and learn from a rare event! That’s shocking!

We study things all the time. Your extrapolation that an investigation means something was preventable is evidence that your higher brain function has been damaged.

drphungky ,

You: "There is not a structure capable of being created by man which could sustain that amount of force, head on, and retain its structural integrity.

drphungky ,

I know you stopped responding but I’m piling on because I’m apparently in an impish mood:

“I believe it would have survived,” El-Tawil said.

From: washingtonpost.com/…/how-key-bridge-collapsed-bal…

Syd ,

Because of a contradictory ass like yourself.

fine_sandy_bottom ,

It takes a pretty special kind of small mindedness to think that this accident will be uninteresting to engineers because container ships are simply too heavy to consider building against.

SorryQuick ,

The amount of force needed to deflect a large object is much smaller than to stop it. In fact, if done over a large enough distance, a tiny amount of force is sufficient.

Need an example? Imagine your big brother is skating down a slope. Could you block him, head on? Probably not. But what if your sister, who was skating next to him, were to slightly steer him out of the way so that he doesn’t hit you?

As an alternative, you can also slow him down over a long distance, requiring the same(?) force but applied in a smaller amount, longer.

hips_and_nips ,

silicone

It’s silicon. Silicon is a naturally occurring chemical element, whereas silicone is a synthetic substance.

Silicon is for computer chips, silicone is for boobies.

now I’m thinking about jet shaped boobies

bamboo ,

Silicone is also really nice for cooking utensils!

dezmd , in Black man was holding sandwiches and keys when an Ohio deputy fatally shot him, prosecutor says
@dezmd@lemmy.world avatar

Meade was not wearing a body camera at the time, so there is no video evidence of the shooting.

Straight. To. Jail.

cmhickman358 ,

The law needs to be if they don’t have their bodycam on and operating, they aren’t a cop at that moment. Anything they do without it recording is their actions as an individual citizen and therefore not protected as the actions of a law enforcement official. Of course there is a litany of other reforms which need to happen as well, but I feel like this would be a simple but major one.

Zombiepirate , in Proud Boys member gets six years in prison for Capitol riot after insulting judge
@Zombiepirate@lemmy.world avatar

Bru has been representing himself with an attorney on standby. He has spewed anti-government rhetoric that appears to be inspired by the sovereign citizen movement. At the start of the hearing, Bru demanded that the judge and a prosecutor turn over five years of their financial records.

Just to make it perfectly clear that this guy is an imbecile.

I mean if the last decade hasn’t proven it yet, I just want to reiterate. You don’t need to be smart to destroy America.

agent_flounder ,
@agent_flounder@lemmy.world avatar

Maybe you need to be dumb and ignorant to destroy America.

newthrowaway20 ,

It certainly helps…

@FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world avatar

Yep.

Just make promises and you can get 49% of the voting population to pull that lever no matter how you vote.

You don’t need to be smart to destroy America.

Its a lot easier to break stuff than it is to build it or fix it.

And yet he still only got six years.

Buffaloaf , in SpaceX executives worried Elon Musk was on drugs during 'cringeworthy' all-hands meeting, WSJ reports

At SpaceX, where illicit drug use could jeopardize the billions of dollars of government contracts enjoyed by the defense contractor due to federal regulations, The Journal’s reports of Musk’s drug use put at risk nearly $1 trillion in assets held by investors, about 13,000 jobs, and the future of the US space program.

And I thought Twitter was going to be his biggest fuck up.

derphurr ,

I don’t think Twitter was a fuck up. It’s likely he had $20B or something insane in cap gains (maybe from selling Tesla shares or other investments).

He took Twitter private sold it on paper to same private shareholders, now can claim $17B or whatever it is in losses. Now he pays nothing in taxes, has one of the largest Internet mouthpieces he can use to sway elections, etc. The only people who took losses are banks he used to swing purchase and the twitter landlord he is refusing to pay.

Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In ,

Musk tried everything possible not to buy twitter, and now it’s worth 20bn less.

I wouldn’t call a planned success.

homesweethomeMrL ,

I mean, it single-handedly ruined everyone’s understanding of who he is and what he can do in the most humiliating ways imaginable. But if you want to spin it as a tax write off supermove, okay. It can be two things I guess.

Jimmyeatsausage ,

And of course, businessinsider doesn’t blame the rich guy… they blame the ‘snitch’

protist ,

Did we read the same article? Can you point out where you think they’re “blaming the snitch?”

Buffaloaf ,

They actually are referencing a different article, this one I believe :

Uglyhead ,

Fuck Them! They can’t blackmail me to stop taking drugs!

—Musk, probably

bitwaba ,

Really though, what’s the point of having “fuck you” money if you don’t tell people “I don’t care. Fuck you” every once in a while? (Or… daily)

friend_of_satan ,

I always thought of “fuck you” money as a statement being made up the chain. Saying “fuck you” to all the employees below him is not cool.

bitwaba ,

the point of having “fuck you” money is that you can say “fuck you” to anyone and it won’t impact you. If you would like to say it to the people up the chain, that’s fine. If you’d like say it to someone else, that’s fine too. Who gives a shit? You certainly don’t. You’ve got “fuck you” money.

sukhmel ,

NOT_RICK , in John Schneider (Dukes of Hazard, Smallville) calls for Joe Biden to be executed
@NOT_RICK@lemmy.world avatar

I always enjoy the nebulous “treason” accusation. At least when I call Donnie a traitor I have a concrete list of grievances instead of a dozen inferences and leaps in logic.

Yeah. Trump and his direct supporters engaged and were filmed engaging in actual insurrection. They made a gallows and had people with ziptie cuffs in masks roaming around the capital.

These asshats are just trying to water down the word because they know they fit the description too well.

CalicoJack ,

They’re trying to water down the word so they can invoke the 14th Amendment against Democrats who hurt their feelings. Texas threatening to remove Biden from the ballots is only the beginning of that particular shitshow.

Besides federation issues this happened to me when I deleted my comment and it was always shown as one more reply fold. But maybe on newer version this displays as a comment was deleted
