We used to call em “demotivationals.” You’d say “post your best demotivational” while posting yours, which we all did. Those were the good old days.

flicker ,

Now we called them demotivationals because they were made in reaction to motivationals, which were all the rage in Shelbyville. And one demotivational was worth ten motivationals. 'Gimme one for the ten,' you'd say, and you would post your motivationals so the wizards of memes could photoshop them, or you might say "shop." Which was the style at the time.

You could always tell a shop from some of the pixels, or from seeing quite a few shops in your time. Whichever was easier.

(I put way more effort into this than it called for.)

The stupid idea went forward despite warning from people within the fucking company, no less. All because they wanted to get some of Hoyogames (Genshin and Honkai Impact)'s juicy profits

HiddenLayer5 ,

And god forbid you point out the fact that this attitude among consumers is exactly the reason these companies are brazen enough to pull this shit. People don’t want to hear how their attitudes around instant gratification and focus on convenience over absolutely all else just might have consequences.

c0mbatbag3l ,
@c0mbatbag3l@lemmy.world avatar

I literally debated someone yesterday over whether or not it’s the consumers willingness to buy that created the demand for a product.

Dude straight up tried to argue that it’s the company’s fault for making a product, as if they wouldn’t do it specifically because they’re going to make money on it.

This website is full of kids who can’t grasp basic economic principles. If everyone stopped buying, all these businesses would go under. They don’t care about the social media bitching, the only way to get the message across is the only thing they care about.

Stop giving them your money.

theneverfox ,
@theneverfox@pawb.social avatar

On one hand yes, if everyone stopped buying their product then the company would go under. Just like if you just eat less, you’d lose weight

But these such oversimplifications that they lead to the wrong conclusions. You want to lose weight? Learn about nutrition, avoid triggers, and learn to cook from single ingredients. Raw willpower can work… But it’s basically the worst strategy. Most people can’t do it, and most of them that do regain the weight within 18 months

You want companies to stop doing consumer hostile things that destroy companies? You need to look at the small number of people making profits on the process of destroying the company

The problem with economics is that it’s taught like a religion. You get nice, believable mechanisms, but not only are they not tested empirically when they’re adopted, it takes decades of being obviously false for the idea to lose steam.

Inflation is an example… Wage growth is empirically not tightly coupled to it - we have the numbers, they aren’t ambiguous. But you tell this to people and they’ll scoff, because the commonly used model of economics says so in a neatly packaged narrative.

Voting with your wallet is the same. Refusing to buy a product does not push a company in a desired direction, they’ll (accurately) see it as a pr and/or marketing problem. It’s cheaper to change the minds of consumers than the build better products, it’s cheaper to lobby governments than to clean up after yourself, and it’s easier, more reliable, and highly profitable to reposition yourself to win big by tanking a company than it is to making it better

buffaloboobs ,

I fuckin hate how right you are.

goddammit.

Regarding your last paragraph: asking for forgiveness is cheaper than asking for permission (when you’re rich)

theneverfox ,
@theneverfox@pawb.social avatar

Oh, I’m not talking about asking for forgiveness… What I’m saying is that you can straight up make enormous profit in tanking a company, and it’s not even illegal. You just have to do it right

Seems like the discourse has broken down to picking sides.

Hamas is a terrorist organization and does nothing to help the Palestinian people. Israel is indiscriminately leveling a city with absolutely zero regard for innocent lives.

Maybe this situation is full of nuance and grey areas that a single tweet or article or comic can’t fully encapsulate.

curiousaur ,

Hamas is the the elected ruling group of Palestine. Even referring to the current Israeli government and army as Israel, but then making a distinction between Hamas and Palestine is hypocritical.

ignotum ,

They “governed” in the gaza strip, yes, but when was the last election exactly? In 2006 they got in power, then they murdered their political opponents and have kept their power through force ever since

Saying that they’re elected by and represent the people would be a bit of a stretch

curiousaur ,

Same stretch as saying the ruling Israeli government represents the people of Israel after the election crises over the last few years.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

We have two ruling bodies who have a vested interest in continued conflict and not representative of their constituents.

curiousaur ,

Right, but folks say Israel is one, the whole nation, but Hamas is the other, they aren’t Palestine. The differenciation in one and not the other is hypocritical and problematic.

Say Palestine vs Israel, accepting that it’s assumed it their ruling body and army at war, and not the average people.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

While it's true that Hamas was elected, half of the people living in Gaza aren't old enough to vote and there hasn't been an election since 2006.

And Israel has their own electric crisis, neither ruling body represents the nations.

I’m terribly sorry to inform you that it seems that we will be getting an even more complete extra extended edition for the 25th anniversary, at least that’s what Peter Jackson seems to be indicating in the commentary of the old extended edition.

The book is a good read, though The Two Towers drags a bit. I do wonder for people that saw the movies first, if you’ll be as offended as a certain subsection of the fandom that just cannot understand why they didn’t do a line by line recreation of the book. (Spoiler, it wouldn’t have translated to film very well.)

VaultBoyNewVegas ,

“You’re going to still pay the other nine, right?”

“Why? I bought it to get more of the money to myself. Why would I pay for something and get nothing in return? Why would I just lose money for no reason?”

Seriously though, the dynamics are pretty clear, there’s no investment without the expectation for extra profit (even for a state. Invest in a new railroad with the expectation of higher economic activity and therefore more taxes). Otherwise it’s just charity

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

I hope for your sake that when the factory workers can't afford to feed their kids and they drag you from your home and try to beat you to death in front of your family they find that argument compelling.

Rinox ,

I’m one of the ten men, I’m just a worker like anyone else here, I can just use the little grey matter I have to try and understand the world and look at it with more objective eyes, instead of killing anyone who disagrees with me.

Fucking fascist pos. If you want to kill families go to Russia or Israel and look at how fun it is.

the_post_of_tom_joad ,

What if the teen men are the ones who own the machine?

Rinox ,

That’s called a cooperative, they exist. You share both the profits and the risks of the enterprise. Not all enterprises succeed. Also, some of the men need to be the managers, accountants, sales etc. It’s not just about the factory workers.

Otherwise, more indirectly, they could be the shareholders of the company. Some companies even use shares as payment for their managers and top employees in order to encourage them to improve the profits of the company.

Otherwise they could just be both the owners and the only people working at a company. If the machine ends up generating lots of profits, they could all ten decide to retire and live off those profits while hiring an eleventh person to operate the machine, or they could reinvest in the company, buy even more machines, hire more people and bring in even more profits, like a complex game of cookie clicker.

Choose the one you prefer and try making it a reality if you want that.

In a modern title designed to be played at 60+, definitely. I’ve been having a blast in dark souls 1 and GTA:SA recently, both of which are capped at 30. Older games are made to work at that FPS, and it takes remarkably little time to adjust and have it feel normal. If I tried to play armored core at 30fps, on the other hand, I think I’d rip my teeth out in frustration.
