Okay now do Microsoft, Apple, Nvidia, Blackrock, etc etc

time_fo_that ,

YouTube videos for some reason won’t load for me on Firefox. I switched to the Waterfox fork and it’s fine.

time_fo_that ,

It’s an anatomical diagram of an ear with ants crawling into it lol

time_fo_that ,

Firefox ftw.

I’ve actually been using Waterfox lately though because for some reason there’s a video codec issue on Firefox that makes YouTube videos not play correctly.

time_fo_that ,

I’m not sure why it happens. It happens on every PC I have Firefox installed on (three of them). I should probably try and reduce my extension count to see if it works lol.

time_fo_that ,

Did it help with battery life? My S24U has not been getting the greatest battery life lately and I wonder if this is why.

Mary Trump: Kamala Harris terrifies my 'flailing' uncle to the 'point of incoherence' (www.rawstory.com)

["]His childish nickname for her is 'laughing Kamala' because she feels joy, and joy is something he has never experienced and doesn’t understand. Faced with the reality that he is now running against a vibrant, intelligent, experienced woman who is fully two decades younger than he is, Donald spent Sunday and Monday flailing,...

time_fo_that ,

Unfortunately he’s stacked the courts in his favor so many times that it has mostly worked 😒

time_fo_that ,

I had the guide open on my laptop for so long but ADHD’d and never got it done lol

France votes to ban ‘forever chemicals,’ exempting frying pans (www.politico.eu)

The French National Assembly on Thursday unanimously adopted a bill aimed at restricting the manufacture and sale of products containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — also known as PFAS or “forever chemicals.” The MPs, backed by the government, voted to exclude kitchen utensils from the scope of the text....

time_fo_that ,

It was on Kickstarter which makes me a bit nervous, but I found a set of carbon steel clad pans from a new company called Strata Cookware. They’re the weight of something like an All-Clad but with a carbon steel top sheet. Pretty excited to try them out.

Google will start showing AI-powered search results to users who didn't opt in (www.engadget.com)

If you’re in the US, you might see a new shaded section at the top of your Google Search results with a summary answering your inquiry, along with links for more information. That section, generated by Google’s generative AI technology, used to appear only if you’ve opted into the Search Generative Experience(SGE) in the...

time_fo_that ,

I got a Google Gemini “text message” in Google messages today. I couldn’t find a way to turn it off, so I just blocked and reported it as spam lol

time_fo_that ,

I think this will be a major issue with AI. Just because it was trained on a huge wealth of knowledge doesn’t mean that it was trained on correct knowledge.

time_fo_that ,

Exactly!

time_fo_that ,

I saw this the other day and I’m like well fuck might as well go to trade school before it gets saturated like what happened with tech in the last couple years.

time_fo_that ,

My mom bought a cheap HP printer/scanner several years ago and subscribed to their “instant ink” subscription which was actually surprisingly cheap (like $3/mo) but once the printer stopped reliably connecting to the internet and nobody could print wirelessly anymore with it, she canceled the subscription and HP DISABLED ALL OF THE INK CARTRIDGES. The cartridges themselves have wifi connections so HP can automatically send you new ink when they get low. What a scam.

time_fo_that ,

This is just what HP told us.

time_fo_that ,

I get my dad’s name attached to a lot of them. He swears he didn’t use my number on a poll or form or something, but I don’t believe him

time_fo_that ,

It’s cheaper to put one screen and write software than spin up manufacturing operations for all sorts of differently shaped custom buttons and the control systems and wiring harnesses that are required to operate them all, so that’s why automakers are doing it. Not saying I like it lol.

time_fo_that ,

Currently Unraid, haven’t tried anything else lol

time_fo_that ,

Or George? Or genius? Or gelatin? Or gender? Or gigantic? Or ginger? Etc, etc, etc…

time_fo_that ,

About what my coworkers do but even worse with stuff like “save” and “fix”

time_fo_that ,

The only reason I used my range’s WiFi is to preheat it from downstairs or the store lol

time_fo_that ,

Not the new ones. They’re all touch screen and it’s soooo slow to start up and do anything, including HVAC and heated seats. My friend’s new Outback has it and it’s not good.

time_fo_that ,

I found it under “Third-party AI” on the web portal settings. It was enabled for me, I’m in the US.

time_fo_that , (edited )

Fuck. I have been using them for backup for years, I currently have everything on my NAS but still like having important stuff in an offsite backup.

Anyone know a reasonably priced cloud storage provider that has integration (either 3rd or 1st party) with Unraid?

Edit: Dropbox just renewed my annual subscription last night at midnight 🙃

Double edit: I went into my Dropbox web portal and found that the setting was enabled by default for me. I’m in the US.

time_fo_that , (edited )

Oh that’s not bad! Thanks I’ll look into it. What are you using to send the backups to Wasabi?

time_fo_that ,

I’m actually not backing up my NAS at the moment. It’s been on my to do list for a while to figure out a solution.

How much does Backblaze run you per month? I’ve got ~2tb stored currently.

time_fo_that ,

Cool I will look into that! What are you running on your NAS to facilitate the backups?

Tech CEO Forced Assistant to Sign 'Sex Slave' Contract, and Tormented Her With Sadomasochistic Bondage, Lawsuit Alleges (themessenger.com)

A former Bay Area tech CEO was fired earlier this year after allegedly enslaving, torturing, and sexually abusing his assistant. He claims the pair had a consensual relationship that people would “celebrate” if it were fictitious....

time_fo_that ,

I’ve seen a few studies on this, I’d have to dig up some sources but socio/psychopaths do tend to seek power… So CEO rates of socio/psychopathy are significantly higher.

time_fo_that ,

Good, this is going to be so annoying. If I send my roommate $1000 to cover my portion of rent (which I used to do every month at my last place) it’s not fucking “income” for them lol.

time_fo_that ,

Article made it sound like only front wheel drive exists now and that only front wheel drive cars use CV joints lol.

time_fo_that ,

I’m also in Seattle and it’s bad out here. I was looking at townhouses last year before the rates went up but couldn’t get a mortgage because of a limited amount of work experience since getting my second degree during the pandemic. I was actually surprised that I could have afforded a decent townhouse in like Edmonds or Shoreline until the rates shot up - going from 3.5% to 7% adds something like $1000 a month in interest on a $400k mortgage. Then I realized I have never lived alone before and wasn’t sure if buying a place was the best way to try that out lol. Average rent in Seattle right now though is like $2300-$2400 a month which is close to 50% of the take-home income of someone making $100,000 per year. It’s insane.

time_fo_that ,

I have a hitch exclusively for a bike rack, could just say that.

time_fo_that ,

I fold the seats down in my 12 year old BMW and have moved twice with that car! I even fit my mountain bike in the back many times (until I got a hitch rack because it was annoying lol).

time_fo_that ,

It’s rated at 22 city 26 hwy, do you really get that much?

The super short bed looks a little less than useful but I do like the idea of an actually small truck because every truck these days is monstrosly large.

time_fo_that ,

Fire. Fox.

time_fo_that ,

That’s the only reason why I have a Chrome install, sometimes some pages (it’s always store pages) don’t work correctly on Firefox, but that’s becoming more rare.

time_fo_that ,

I’m in Seattle, most of my friends have roommates or moved back in with their parents (which I did in 2020 when I lost my last job). I am making slightly more than my last job now with a second degree but after inflation I’m making quite a bit less and rent has gone up significantly since then. So I still can’t afford my own place.

Is it just me, or has the BS with OpenAI shown that nobody in the AI space actually cares about "safeguarding AGI?"

Money wins, every time. They’re not concerned with accidentally destroying humanity with an out-of-control and dangerous AI who has decided “humans are the problem.” (I mean, that’s a little sci-fi anyway, an AGI couldn’t “infect” the entire internet as it currently exists.)...

time_fo_that ,

My biggest concern with generative AI is all of the CEOs that will eagerly seize the opportunity (and some already have) to fire staff and offload their work onto their remaining employees so they can use ChatGPT to make up for lost productivity. Easy way for them to further line their pockets without increasing pay for anyone else, further dividing the worker/CEO wage disparity and class divide.

time_fo_that ,

Elon works his employees to death, I have several friends that got hired by SpaceX and Tesla after we all graduated and they told me they often work 60-80 hour weeks on salary but that “they build cool shit” so it’s “worth it” lol.
