F that noise. I’m here and active because Sync came out, and I’ve become used to its interface over the years. I’ll eventually try the other FLOSS apps but I’m here learning and enjoying first.

OceanSoap ,

Yeah, op, don’t feel shamed about using sync, it’s a great app that’s worth using. I use it. Lots of us use it. The hate is a knee-jerk reflex to the sudden influx of excited reddit sync users who have migrated to lemmy and talked a lot about sync. I think FOSS users were expecting a FOSS-type option and were shocked when that wasn’t the case. Then you also had users who were just mad that it would cost more to be used here than it was on reddit.

No one hates you for using sync.

lol nuclear is really uneconommical, way too expensive and therefore really inefficient. You need 10-20 years to build a plant for energy 3 times more expensive than wind. For plants that still require mining. That produce waste we cannot store and still cannot reuse (except for one small test plant). For plants that no insurance company want to insure and energy companies dont like to build without huge government subsidies.

I know lemmy and reddit have a hard on for nuclear energy because people who dont know anything about it think its cool. But this post is ridiculous even for lemmy standards.

The Doolittle Raid launched longer-range bombers from US carriers to hit Japan and they were lightened up to the max (dumped their guns and anything else non-essential) and planned from the get-go to ditch over China because flying back would be impossible.

Being able to fly a bomber halfway across the World was beyond WW2 tech.

EmpathicVagrant ,

WAIT so I’ve heard about the goat in passing, but a SECOND DOG‽

bdonvr , (edited )

Yeah sometimes animals need to be put down out in the country.

But she just completely failed to raise that dog to do what she wanted, completely impatient, then decided the only recourse was to shoot it.

Then just decided while she was out killin’ to shoot a “mean” goat too? Like if she hadn’t decided to kill the dog she wouldn’t have killed the goat? Bloodlust is what it sounds like.

CucumberFetish ,

Yeah, putting down a dog that bites people is sometimes the only option, but the way it was worded sounded more like “it wasn’t a golden genius and I didn’t like it, so I shot it instead of putting any effort into training it”

InputZero ,

Someone with one brain cell and a shred of morality would re-home the dog first. At least try too. Growing up near farmers it wasn’t uncommon for them to give someone else a dog when that dog was a bad farm dog but could be a family dog. I’ve known farmers and they don’t act like Governor Noem.

SirSamuel ,

I have a friend that works with a rescue group in Colorado, almost exclusively for cattle dogs. They rescue and re-home the dogs for a variety of reasons. The most prevalent is the dog can’t work anymore and will be put down. That’s it. It got too old and is consuming resources without producing.

I’m not saying all farmers and ranchers are like this, but the mentality certainly exists. These people see certain life as a commodity only, and it often extends to cruelty to “lower life”. It’s even at the root of calling people who aren’t in their tribe “lower life”, and devaluing them accordingly

InputZero ,

Those same farmers I was talking about before have absolutely put down their own animals. They’ve shot their dogs when they’re old and it’s time. One family in particular let their cats “rejoin with nature” aka, just leaving it outside until a predator gets it. I think that’s crewl but I can accept those cats are farm cats, not house cats and had lived ‘in nature’ their whole lives. I’ve even heard about shooting day when they plan to shoot the less useful animals. They get the right ammo, carts, make plans for what they will do with the carcass.

What they don’t do is shoot a young dog because it’s not what they hate it, then follow up with shooting a goat too and are pleased with themselves. That’s a bright red flag for anti-social or psychopathic behavior, I can never remember which is which. The farmers I know see culling their livestock as a task or a burden, but I’ve never heard a farmer tell me they take pleasure from it like Governor Noem did in her book. Unprompted I must add.

PriorityMotif ,
@PriorityMotif@lemmy.world avatar

They’ve been doing that for a long time too. I worked at a Chevy dealership circa 2009 and did dealer installed backup cameras on Silverado and remote start systems on Camero. The Camero was just new key fob and reprograming. The Silverado was a new tailgate handle and wiring, if it didn’t have an infotainment system then it got a new rear view mirror.

On my Ford I was able to use a program called Forscan and activate remote entry that didn’t come from the factory even though the receiver was already included.

Even my 1998 car had wiring in place for features that it didn’t come with because it was cheaper to make one harness for all models instead of different harnesses for different options.

also an ESP32 could land a man on the moon

MrShankles , (edited )

So I’m not an IT professional by any means, it’s a hobby. But I’m curious if an ESP32 could land a man on the moon. I searched around a bit and am under the assumption that an ESP32 has a CPU or microprocessor of some sort.

What I’m trying to figure out is: Would a processor on an ESP32 have RAM and ROM built into the chip. I hope I’m asking the right questions.

It seems like a processor should have RAM for a cache. But I gave up trying to figure out if it would also have built-in ROM (specifically, an ESP32’s processor)

Do all CPU’s/microprocessors now have SRAM for a cache? Do all also contain ROM? Or is it separate? I guess an ESP32 does require ROM for it’s firmware, regardless? And (maybe?) SRAM in it’s processor?

I’m beinginng to think an ESP32 would have the “specs” to land a man on the moon?

Idk, “how true is your statement” is what I’m trying to figure out (but I lack a lot of the technical knowledge), and now I’m curious. If someone could ELI9, I’d appreciate it

Edit: I did flash the eeprom on some XBOX TSOP chips in the past. So maybe ROM isn’t part of the CPU, but very near-and-dear. Annnnd I’m in a rabbit hold about the anatomy of CPU’s because of a one sentence comment. Please help

bitfucker ,

ESP32 is a term that is often used very broadly. If you want to be accurate, ESP32 is a very specific integrated circuit that contains a lot of stuff needed for computation and packaged in a single chip made by Espressif. This chip, usually called SoC/MCU contains the CPU, RAM, ROM, and other peripherals, even wireless communication and encryption primitive.

ESP32 itself contains the following spec:

  • Dual core 32-bit CPU with clock speed up to 240MHz
  • 520KB of SRAM
  • 448KB of ROM

Now, for comparison, the Apollo programs consist of a lot of systems. But arguably, the computer that is responsible to make the landing possible is the guidance computer.

Let’s take a look at the spec from wikipedia:

  • 15-bit CPU with a clock of 2.048 MHz
  • 2048 words RAM (2048×15 = ~30KBit)
  • 36864 words ROM (~553KBit)

That alone should give you an idea of how powerful computers have come to. Not to mention the size difference (ESP32 only around 5mm×5mm), power consumption, and a lot of other factors.

MrShankles , (edited )

Thank you! I was reading the wiki about the “landing” and could “understand” how a current phone would be vastly more than sufficient. I got lost trying to find how an “ESP32” was designed… and then how processor’s were (normally) designed nowadays… and how it all worked together. I guess I was asking if a single “chip” could include all of those things (CPU, RAM, ROM), or if it was multiple “chips”. An integrated circuit is what I think I was trying to dissect. I’m still curious about the inter-workings, but you cleared a whole lot up for me.

I really appreciate the breakdown, because I didn’t have the terminology to properly search. I guess it still kinda blows my mind how far it’s all progressed

Edit: And now I’m learning the difference between “Integrated circuit” and “circuit board”… seems silly in hindsight, but the terminology had me a bit confused. Super cool, nonetheless.

That won’t help with asthma sadly :(

bobbytables ,

I don’t know what you already do and what your insurance would cover but here’s a list of things that helped me tremendously:

  1. I have two different inhalers. One for attacks and one prophylactic. Since I use the second one daily I haven’t had an attack in 10+ years.
  2. Have an asthma diary. Measure your breath a few times a week and take notes. After a while you will recognize patterns days ahead when the chances for an attack might be higher. Medicate accordingly! I up the dosage for the prophylactic inhaler slightly when I see changes (e.g. during allergy season).
  3. Breath out! That one sounds stupid, I know. Paraxoically the major problem with asthma often is breathing out, not in. So there are breathing exercises where you learn to focus on breathing out to make way for easier breathing in. It can be as simple as counting to 5 while breathing in and counting to 8 while breathing out with a 2 seconds break before again breathing in. Adjust the numbers for you. It calms your breathing and can even help with an attack (though I would still use an inhaler then).

I also have my lungs screened every two years. Ever since I follow the above list my measurements get better over time even though I am slowly past the “it will heal by itself” age.

Where I am from all the above steps are covered by insurance. I know for example in the US inhalers can be obscenely expensive so step 1 might be a problem. But steps 2+3 are low cost and are still very beneficial. So I hope you can find something in the list that eases your burden.
