They’re still a capitalist country like most, but worker rights are pretty strong there and they have much better social services and consumer regulations. I’m always blown away by how much higher quality French food is despite costing less, and I mean like from the grocery store not just nice restaurants.
The fun thing most of these games aren’t even truly capitalist. City builders like Cities Skylines, Tropico and Anno have little or no free market and you’re just in control of a centralized planned economy.
The only truly capitalist games I saw on that list are X4 and Offworld Trading Company since you play as a single private owner competing with others on the market.
Cities skylines is definitely a capitalist economy as you literally make your earnings by changing tax rate and the only thing you control insofar as unmodded goes is zoning and city services lmao
This just in: America not capitalist. You have exactly as much control as the average American town/city does in that game. Control of zoning and road development isn’t a “planned economy” lmaoo. The entire game is based in and around a capitalistic society and the demand created by said society in your town for it to grow that’s the whole reason for the demand bars.
You also don’t really have to worry about satisfying the demands of huge multinational corporations. So it’s pretty idealized, as though capital has no undue influence on state-level political decisions.
My friends who play PDX games with me and know my politics sometimes tease me about the game using currency or referencing profitability. And then I remind them that we’re all meticulously planning our economies with virtually nothing left for a privileged class to decide. And our decisions, though made in a context of imperialism, aren’t being made for personal wealth but state power.
Except when you’re playing Victoria and the capitalists decide it’s time to build the 34th arts academy with the building capacity it took you sweat and blood to build.

Am I missing something here or is OP not aware that winter isn’t everywhere at the same time, and that tropical regions don’t follow these “classical” (for lack of a better term) seasons at all?

An AAAA cell has 200-350 mohms internal resistance. A 9v battery has 6 of them in series (many of them are literally that, others have their cells as a stack of plastic buckets). The nose ring is a short run of wire, it’s idunno a 0.2 ohm heater?
I just tested this (for science!) with a 9V battery and an iron nail of roughly nose-ring diameter. Both the nail and the battery get unpleasantly hot after several seconds. I don’t think they’d get hot enough to burn you, though. (Don’t take my word, though, please!) I believe the internal resistance of the battery does also increase with the temperature, so it effectively somewhat self regulates itself.
Common nose ring materials like Titanium and Stainless Steel are 4× and 7× more resistant than iron, which means they should dissipate more power than the nail, and thus get hotter. I was calculating something around 3 milliohms for a titanium 16 gauge 10mm wire, and 0.7 milliohms for an iron wire.
Regardless of material, at 1000 milliohms internal resistance, i think the battery itself is doing most of the heat dissipation. (But also over a much bigger surface area!)
About 10-20s, I left it on until it didn’t seem to be getting much hotter. I also didn’t want the battery to overheat and fail catastrophically. I think because the “wire” is such a large gauge, there’s not enough current for it to get seriously hot. In a foam cutter, you’re passing all that current through a much smaller cross-sectional area.
Edit: just to confirm, I did a little math. A 10cm steel wire with a tenth of the diameter would have a resistance of 5 ohms. That means that instead of 1% of the total heat dissipating in the thick wire, 80% of the heat is dissipating in the wire in foam cutter’s case, and there’s more total resistance, so more heat dissipation as well.
This is because:
A = π r²
R = ρ × L / A
So resistance is proportional to the material resistivity (ρ), the length (L), and the inverse square of the radius (r⁻²). That is to say, decreasing the radius by a factor of 10 increases resistance by a factor of 100.
Why not get rid of First Past the Post voting, implement Ranked Choice / Alternative voting, and then we won’t have to fucking have this conversation at all?

I went to a food truck festival a few weeks ago, and holy shit the prices of stuff. I don’t think there was a single item you could get for less than $18, and that was like the price of three french fries.
Yeah that’s how it is here. Food trucks are only at events and event food costs a fortune for some reason. You’d think that having 1000s of hungry people in one place would allow the to drop the price a bit but nah gotta squeeze us for everything.
TBF food trucks are insanely expensive (like, $80K+ expensive) so I don’t really blame owners for charging whatever people will pay. I’m just amazed people pay that much.
Yeah classic food truck venue here is an event at a brewery where they’re legally required to serve food. So you buy tickets and then provide to the vendors, but if you work out the prices it ends up being insane with super small quantities. They always have to make the food weird too, sometimes it’s cool but sometimes you just want normal shitfood.
I wanna do one where it’s like simple lowbrow stoner food done just a little fancy. Like grilled PB&J, but the peanut butter is the good stuff and the jam has the full berries in it, sourdough bread that can really take a heavy fry in some salted butter. The kind of stuff that’s dirt simple to make but really shines with a bit of extra love.
In Colorado, that has been my experience for over a decade. Food truck food was never cheap here. In Portland, just this year, I managed a few great and cheap meals from their food carts.
In my city: there was two stoners who ran around making three types of ramen - vegan, non-vegan (their broth is a different), and regular (they crack an egg).
It was like $6-7.
I loved those guys and used to follow them around.
The point is to mock those that post this kind of thing seriously. It’s to make you realize there is sometimes merit in the “stop having fun” side of things.
I just want things to end. It's okay for things to be over. Star wars wasn't served by it's sequels, but here we are with a new WHATEVER every year. And marvel is worse, with a new show every month or two. Realistically, how long is anyone supposed to care?
The only thing I will say is that this can be a bridge behavior. If we at least get them to think with love and caring. If they believe I am going to hell, I at least want them to feel like they wouldn’t do the same if they were in charge
In the internet and isolated from people who have different beliefs, it’s easy to forget that compromise is the only way forward without violence. In this case, not compromising freedom nor equality, but what you’re willing to tolerate in someone else’s beliefs
Ok and we shouldn’t be willing to tolerate someone believing LGBT+ is dirty or sinful. That’s a belief that causes much harm. Imagine a trans child having to grow up in a home with parents who tell them it is a sin. LGBTphobia leads to abuse, all the time, so we should not tolerate it.
Saying we should simply compromise is some blind privilege if I’ve ever seen it.
In my experience the bigots tend to view it as a bridge the other way. It let’s them feel like they care whilst still pushing a destructive agenda. There is no compromise on the table, they just want you to submit.
I do not know how to explain to you that there can be no compromise between someone who wants to do or be a thing and a person who wants to make doing/being that thing illegal
Historians of the medieval era hate the term “dark ages”, even in relation to Europe. The whole notion that the Roman Empire went poof one day and then everything sucked for 1000 years is just cartoonishly wrong.
I once heard in some history tv show that it’s called “dark ages” not because of the bad living conditions, but because we know so few things about it, compared to other history periods.
They didn’t skip it, the enlightenment was a continuation of what they came up with. I’m pretty sure they didn’t deny the earth is round and the sun is the center of our galaxy.

Hmmm, the minions probably did think the earth was flat since that’s what the church told them. Definitely, most of the thinkers of that time knew it wasn’t and were told to keep it hush hush or there would be harsh punishment. It’s not a one size fits all kind of thing, and just like everything else, it’s complicated.
